- For fans of LARAMIE, the mystery of Bobby Crawford leaving the series has long been a topic of conversation. The older of the two acting Crawford boys joined Rob Word at The Autry Dec 2022 to recall his departure from the series and his amazing life and career, including a fencing match against Robert Redford while on location for BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID.
In 1955, Robert Crawford, Jr and his younger brother Johnny, ages 11 and 9, were asked to appear on a new afternoon network kid show to demonstrate their youthful fencing abilities. The series was "The Mickey Mouse Club" and marked the beginning of two successful careers. The Crawford boys both ended up in hit western series. Johnny, of course, was Mark McCain on "The Rifleman" with Chuck Connors.
Bobby was cast as Andy Sherman, John Smith's brother on LARAMIE with Robert Fuller and Hoagy Carmichael. Ironically, both young actors received Emmy nominations the same year, 1959, along with their father, Robert, who was nominated for editing THE BOB CUMMINGS SHOW. Bobby received a Best Actor nomination for his performance on live television’s Golden Age classic, PLAYHOUSE 90. Johnny for Best Supporting Actor on THE RIFLEMAN.
Following LARAMIE, Bobby recalls his lucky break in reuniting with his PLAYHOUSE 90 director, George Roy Hill, to film one of the earliest behind-the-scenes documentaries on what was to become a box office smash, BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID. The result was a one hour Prime Time network special that won an Emmy. More excitement with Hill followed as Robert's journey took him to the Academy Awards as Associate Producer of THE STING, which took home an Oscar for Best Picture.
This episode is premiering on March 26th, brother Johnny’s birthday. (March 26, 1946-April 29, 2021).

I only recently discovered Laramie and was drawn into it by the infectious nature of Bobby’s character. He and Johnny are always captivating to watch from those early years. Such vibrant and engaging characters with infectious smiles and expressive eyes.

I was about 2 to 3 minutes into the interview when it dawned on me dummy that I am that Bobby and Johnny are brothers learned so much from this interview Thanks Rob.
ROBERT CRAWFORD JR. looking good at 78, gives another great and humble interview on his career...
For me, his work on producing The Making Of BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KID documentary, was one of his most iconic accomplishments. Director George Roy Hill initiated the project, but Robert really did the work in making a definitive "how a movie is made" for both western fans and students of film.
Working at 20th Century-Fox, I was so delighted to see it on the Special Edition DVD release, having secured the rights from George Roy Hill's estate and the university he left it to. This really was the first in-depth 1hr. documentary on the making of the highest grossing western of all-time.
Ironically, another 1969 western got that treatment called THE WILD BUNCH, but it was put together years later and was told subjectively.
I always enjoy your interviews with Western stars of yesteryear. Thank you again Rob.

Judging from that photo, Bobby and Johnny were the very image of their dad. With a beautiful sister, and their mom was totally gorgeous.
Great insider stories on Butch and Sundance. Much as I like McQueen, the film would not have been as good without Redford or if Newman had not played Butch, who was indeed *very* funny in the part.

Wonderful to see Bobby again. Wish I could thank him for being so kind to me when we were so young. He and Johnny were wonderful down to earth people. Great interview as always. I also enjoyed seeing Johnny's horse "Two Bit" . I remember that horse well.

Thanks Rob for such an informative interview w/Bobby Crawford. An outstanding family in the filming business. Still watch The Rifleman w/Johnny and always looking for those few episodes where both Bobby and Johnny acted. Oh the “fights” they’d have on the North Fork schoolyard.
This really was a story of positively in a business that can often be depressing due to its itinerant nature. Luck plays a part in every successful life, but it's only a small part. Preparation plays a large role, but even more so a willing attitude can carry one far. Talent helps, but it's the attitude that makes the biggest difference. Robert Crawford Jr. has that great attitude which is why he is an engaging and entertaining guest.
Well Rob that was a fantastic interview with Bobby ! Love Laramie loved Slim and Jess and all the cast of Laramie . Was sad and disappointed when i realised they had let Bobby go. He fit so well in that series and its a mystery why he didnt continue in the role !But its great he went on to other great things. Thanks Rob for another great interview .

I have ridden the Steam Train from Durango to Silverton, CO. I have also driven that 60 miles of 15 mph winding curves hugging the cliff face with no guard rails. It was absolutely white-knuckle, and harrowing.

I was a fencer at Arcadia High School in Scottsdale, the only left handed fencer on the team. I had to reverse my moves. It gave everyone else a chance to practice against a leftiy.

Been away for a while, Rob, and playing at catch up. Another tremendous video, Rob. I always loved Laramie, especially the black & white years. Robert has had a tremendous career with Butch Cassidy, and other films. Great fencing story and Robert has such a great outlook on life, one that we all could learn from. “ Happy Horses**t”; I love it ! Thank you for such a great video, Rob; take care, amigo.

Robert Fuller said he can't play Slim because he's not slim and they said "no no" and.....? He didn't play Slim but John Smith wasn't slim either. That said, Robert Fuller played the right role. Jess Harper, Brett Maverick, and Bart Maverick were my favorite "cowboys" when I was a little boy.
Did Hogei Carmichael get let go from the tv show Laramie the same time as Bobby Crawford ?
Hi, Hank. I heard that Hoagy left because the hours for doing a series are very very long and he could make more money performing in clubs and recording. The camera sure like him, though.
I loved the character that Hoagy Carmichael played in Laramie! We are so blessed nowadays that we can watch those episodes all day long if we want!🥰

As a kid when Laramie came out ,I loved Robert in that part. It wasn’t the same when they replaced him with the sappy ,cutesy replacement . I didn’t watch it every week after Robert left.
My only complaint is this is much too brief. I could listen to this guy for hoursw.

It was a real fight in post to boost it as much as possible without distorting the audio. RJ worked and worked to get it to this level.

Does anyone know why the 1st episode of Laramie was in color but then the season 1 & 2 episodes are in black and white before going back to color for seasons 3 &4? 😅
Mai, Dennis Holmes just texted me his thoughts: “The answer in Hollywood is almost always money.” He’s probably correct. I think the pilot was filmed in color so that, if the series didn’t sell, they might be able to add more running time and sell it internationally as a short feature.

@@AWordonWesterns Thanks. Appreciate it. I'm 40 and haven't gotten into tv westerns as much as I have with Laramie. I knew of the rifleman, Bonza, etc. Then I started to see Laramie on Grit tv in 2016 I believe and was blown away by the score, production, acting, writing, direction, cinematography, characterizations, the tone, themes pretty much everything but some of the stock footage in some episodes. It made an impression and I've been through the complete series a couple of times now. This word on westerns really gave me the insight to the show. A terrific companion piece for the series. So thanks guys. I really hold this show in high regard. It's consistently good. Up there with Nypd Blue, The Wire and any other great character and ensemble shows.
