    I was born/raised in Galion, OH and my dad worked at Galion Iron Works, where these graders were made. I still have memories of going to his office on the weekends, taking home some treasured GALION stickers (the ones applied to these once-mighty machines). I also remember the saying "all roads lead to Galion" because you would see these graders and rollers building roads across America and even in foreign countries (like Saudi Arabia). I'd call/write to my dad whenever I saw one while I was in the Army. They were also used to plow snow. Imagine hearing these iron beasts rolling down your street at o-dark-thirty after a snow storm! I'm not sure if my dad (who's 80 now) has seen this and other videos like it, but I'd like to thank those of you who painstakingly restore these wonderful machines, which are part of our American history.

      Nice memories, the first grader I ever ran was a Galion. I've also run Galion rollers. I worked for the Virginia DOT and pushed snow with a grade too. With a V- plow on the front I could move a lot of snow.i never thought about where they were built or the people who built them.

    One thing to point out with the starter. That solenoid has a magnetic coil in it that engages the gear to the flywheel. If you just jump the high current relay, without giving the coil power, it won't engage. You need to short out the small lead, not the two large ones.

    Hammering on a starter that spins is a good way to break it. Never hit the center of the end plate, it covers the bearing.

    That starter is a pre-engaged type, crossing the solenoid will only ever spin the motor, you need to find the third (small) terminal and cross the power to that and it'll engage properly then... Edit- haha you got her in the end then.

    The last T-400 I operated had a 250hp Cummins, the one before had a 4-71 Detroit. The Cummins had so much power for the size the company put a scraper push block on the front, it worked too. If the starter Spins why beat on it? The solenoids stuck (tap) on it while turning the starter. The two end controls are the left/right blade lift. Second from the right is wheel lean to load the machine wheels need to be verticals. DO NOT run with no water & water pump that head Gasket WILL blow IH was famous for it. ChiefD

    Yall come up with the neatest stuff. IH made Galion for YEARS! The outside levers are for the blade sides, right outside lever to work the right side and the outside left for the left. I ran one like that YEARS ago but it had a Cummins in it but the automatic was different. Seems like it had a manual hi/lo and an automatic hi/lo and fwd and rev. 3 levers instead of 2. It'll do you proud when the rust gets fixed and'll make a smooth road! I had to subscribe to see how all this is going. THANKS from an old worn out driver and operator!

      @@HamiltonvilleFarm About all your graders are set up the same way with the blade controls but A/C had both the blade lift levers right together on the right hand. Maybe the old Deers too. It's been a long time.

      @@HamiltonvilleFarm I ran an OLD Gallion that had an IH- UD engine (started on gas and the switched to diesel) that was swapped out for a 4-71 Detroit/GM. It had 6 forward gears and 2 reverses on one stick. You had to go all the way out of high range and up into lo and then back across BUT the stick would fall out of the socket and lock the brake pedal so you couldn't get the brakes on. It was blamed sure interesting! And many gray hairs later..............

      Galion Iron Works made Galion graders. Probably used a lot of IH engines.

    • @lewiemcneely9143
      @lewiemcneely9143 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ohgary All the old diesels were UD power plants but the later ones could be Cummins or Detroit/GM's. Probably some gas jobs but I never saw one.

    We have an old grader that judging bu the technology is older than that thing. It has even taken care of and looks nicer though. There is a leak in the brake line so we have no brakes and you can’t kill the engine from thei cab throttle like your supposed to but it still runs and we use it a lot. When we first got it, we couldn’t find the switch for the throttle on the engine so to shut it off you dug the blade down, throttled down, put it in 4h, and popped the clutch. It has a Detroit engine in it and I believe it is from some sort of Adams company or something like that. It is all PTO’s running from the lever to the thing it runs. Fun machine that we love.

      And more than likely I will guarantee you'll will have fuel pump issues with the engine dying and either you'll have to send the rosa master pump out to be rebuilt or get the updated part yourself it's a one piece and make your own timing mark and put all new seals in

    There is no bendix on that starter motor, the solenoid engages the starter sprocket as well as supplying the power to the motor so needs to be energised. “We are not mechanics.” You’re right there.
