In 1986, opera star Luciano Pavarotti was invited to Beijing to present La Bohème, conduct master classes and perform concerts for more than 150 million people. Academy Award-winning filmmaker DeWitt Sage captures every moment of Pavarotti's travels, from the tenor's famously cheerful exchanges with local singers to the inevitable clash of cultures. Produced by Sage, John Goberman, founding producer of Live from Lincoln Center, and Dan Wigutow.

Giant Pictures will be re-releasing the film as a 30th Anniversary edition on digital platforms worldwide & DVD on September 10, 2019. Luciano Pavarotti was of course, and still is, the most famous opera singer in the world. The film contains unique footage from the great tenor’s tour of China in 1986 and is a must-see for any opera lover.” said Nick Savva, of Giant Pictures.
The 30th Anniversary Edition of Distant Harmony: Pavarotti in China is a time capsule of that brief period in time when Pavarotti visited China, just after it had begun to open a door to the West, and right before it slammed that door shut. The documentary preserves a period in Pavarotti’s life when he was still at the top of his game, and at the peak of his worldwide fame. His voice and performances in the documentary are brilliant. He was an ambassador for opera, and he brought opera to the masses, in places other than opera houses. Pavarotti was one of the few opera singers to become a worldwide household name, even in China.
