China July 6 1986 Opera Great Luciano Pavarotti comes to Beijing

From 1965 to 1978, Western Opera was banned in China. Today China is one of the great repositories of interest in Western Classical music. China's modern passion for the classics picked up momentum in the 1980's. Luciano Pavarotti sang to packed houses. A few years earlier Isaac Stern brought his violin inspirations to Shanghai a process chronicled in the Academy Award winning film 'From Mao to Mozart".
