Saint Seiya (Cavaleiros do Zodiaco) is basically the most influent anime who opened the doors for Dragon Ball and others to grow! So, yours findings (Guardians and Star) were awesome for us! Here in Panama, Saint Seiya was known as "Caballeros del Zodiaco", and it was huge! We came from school straight to watch it on tv, and then on weekends, we had maratons of Caballeros for like 3 hours on tv.
This anime is the one that made me realize I could draw and hold a special place in my heart.

Yes. And it’s amazing in a Xena kind of way. Kinda interesting how this feels reminiscent.
Which brings up another question. Why not just make Saint Seiya into a Xena clone instead? I’ve been watching that and it feels like the right tone. Just make the armors less bulky.

I find it so funny that in the original anime and manga Shiryu is known for being blind in several fights and occasions, while in this version his whole thing is shooting people with heat vision lol
His blindness would have been an interesting development taking that into account.
would be funny if the show went on and the cause of his blindness ended up him overusing his eye lasers and getting cataracts of something in that overly dramatic soap opera kind of drama where everyone is beside him on the hospital bed and all
In all fairness he wasn’t blind at the start. Also he regained his vision after fighting Death Mask AKA Cancer or Klaw? Klar? Whatever they call him in this show. I don’t know, this is all over the place.

I'm not even into Saint Seiya all that much, but I've gotta say, this is an important artifact in the popularization of anime in North America. I also find a bit of odd charm in how they tried to Power Rangers-ify the series. All in all, thank you for preserving this!
This was because Americans couldn't import the original 1986 anime due to strict guidelines of importing animes Stateside, that anime was too violent for kids and it's very hard to find a way to censor anything without cutting it out. It got relaxed in the 2000s when Cartoon Network released Toonami block that aired animes with less to none censorship. This is why Cartoon Network aired the DiC dub of Saint Seiya than on local networks like Fox Kids and ABC Kids.
That makes sense
For 5 dollars and a dream, this pilot honestly looks pretty great...
American adaptations really like making Shun a girl.

Americans don't get the whole Japanese trope "gentle guys have inner strength".
@@MattiaBulgarelli I’m calling nonsense on that, though. Especially since the original anime and its spinoffs (and the movie I seen) didn’t quite get it either. Shun was basically as useless as Saori in the story because making him do anything crucial with his armor, it’ll quickly go into Rated R territory. Think of Hellraiser. I kinda lost interest watching the series once I realized he pretty much was a punching bag to show how awful the threat is. And while I like the character concept? Kurumada wrote them into a corner with a double whammy of a graphic weapon and being based on the eponymously chained woman from Greek myth. One that basically does…nothing and is not alluded as to why besides his moral qualms. They shown his brother being tortured by his mentor and even kill his own daughter, but Shun got nothing like that.
It’s hard to honestly take the inner strength teope execution seriously when it doesn’t surface in any meaningful manner and only serves to undermine it.
Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho is a far better example of this character done right because he’s not useless and can hold his own.
As for America? Samurai Jack is a gentle character, but he’s proactive. Same as Iroh and Richie from Static Shock. And Gabrielle from Xena. The latter is a woman but it still applies.
In terms of villains in both counterparts of Shaider, Priest Poe was androgynous but in VR Troopers, they made into a female character.

also it's kind of hilarious for a show that's changing so much about its inspiration to KEEP the og armor, something the original didn't do for most of its run, but also to care so little for production so as to make it super impractical and give 3 of the 5 of them the fucking wings their cloths have
seriously, this looks less of a cheesy cash grab adaptation and more of a big time saint seiya fan having his chance to write his fan fiction

Discovering lost media is such an interesting hobbie that I love to see. I really love how you are dedicated to finding lost media like this Saint Seiya is one of my favourite anime’s period I wish we could find an English audience for this series and this anime hitting the UK/US someday like fist of the North Star did.
At the early 90's it was The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Era. Saint Seiya wouldn't had an opportunity for a live action TV show. But, there it is, the TV pilot itself! 1st time in my Life to witness! Thank you TH-cam!

This is a very good day. Two Lost Media TH-camrs (both from Canada) uploaded a lost media-related video at about the same time. The other one is Jett McPlane, a TH-camr who uploads videos discussing every and any obscure and/or lost puppet media that she can find. Highly recommend

On my country at least, there was a small buffer of time between the airing of the Saint Seiya anime and Power Rangers (and shows styled like it, like this one) if this show had existed and broadcasted during that time, it might have been received positively.

It was due to violence concerns. Many of the fights in Saint Seiya were hand-to-hand combats but they used some magic attacks when they're fighting enemies from a ranged distance.

What was the need to change the names of the constellations and the knights of the zodiac... As far as I know, the names of the zodiac signs and the constellations are not copyrighted?
I’d guess at first because winged horses are perceived as girly, but the changes make far too little sense besides maybe Andromeda. Maybe they thought connecting a female character to a constellation based on a chained woman wasn’t exactly a great idea.
American Ikki’s probably because of a similar reason to Kintaurus, because birds in kids media aren’t typically associated with being cool like a dragon.
@@ByTheStormPhoenix was an Asian bird, this was something that Americans couldn't get it at that time. This is why Mythical Chi Beast Star Houou was changed into a Firebird Thunderzord.

Spare me that anti American garbage. You’re acting as if phoenixes are this foreign concept when they’re in Western cultures since Ancient Greece.
The name is literally from Greek myth. I just looked it up and there’s parallels in countless different cultures. Phoenixes are also called firebirds so it doesn’t exactly matter about the semantics. And there’s even a car named after a firebird.
It was already a stretch to smooth over transitioning since Saban didn’t want to pay for more footage. And given how the Ninjetti powers were treated, I feel like a bullet was dodged.
It’s not like they could really use the Dairanger suit footage due to the violence after how Zedd was apparently treated. And trying to replicate that with whatever word salad they wanted to call it wouldn’t really go over that well instead of just saying they’re an upgrade.
