I'm not drinking from the KoolAid anymore. The MIDI spec was supposed to make this easy and I have lost hours trying to get this to work with Novation's flagship controller. Steinberg has failed us for years on MIDI Remotes; that it was a huge selling point of Cubase 12 burns me more. You seem like a decent guy Dom, this isn't about you personally, I love your videos and energy.
Dom you have a very clear speech. I understand every word you say even when you talk fast. When I watch films in english (i.e. Monty Python - Life of Brian) i often have to look at the script :).
Dom, my friend, i've been following your content for a long time. Once again, you explain things with efficiency, joy and simplicity. Much much love from France ❤
Hey, Dom. Awesome video presentation as always. I just got my AKAI MIDImix CUBASE DAW controller this week and I really liked it. It took me a while to set it up since I had to find all the documentation to follow. AKAI doesn't really have a good thorough step by step process in setting it up for CUBASE but only for LIVE 11 and other DAWs in the market. This seems like a product bias which is not a good marketing tool for AKAI. I've already seen some users who purchased it and returned it back to the seller due to inadequate documentation. I had to do a lot of research to find good written documentation online and I found M-Audio had one for CUBASE DAW setup for the MIDImx. However, I was able to setup it up by following M-Audio's instructions and finally got my AKAI MIDImx USB hardware to work but not completely until I watched this video of yours which you added more steps to its functionality. Thanks for sharing your video and take good care.
Hey Dom, great video, but I have a few questions that I'm hoping you can answer. In Cubase 12, can you assign project horizontal zoom, vertical zoom, and waveform zoom to faders/knobs? This is something that isn't possible in Cubase 11 with the Generic Remote Editor, there are only separate parameters for zooming out and zooming in instead of a general zoom parameter, due to which you can't get a fader to function as a control for it. I know I could map these features to buttons, but I'd much prefer a fader/knob. If you could check if this is possible I would really appreciate it.
Dom I appreciate your content, keep making awesome videos! I been producing for 18 years and each time I watch one of your videos I Iearn something New
I agree, that MIDI Control is an excellent feature. However, there is one important thing you fail to mention. That is how to get Cubase feedback with the contoller. Let me give you an example. I have a Behringer X-Touch One (which I use strictly as a transport controller). This has lit buttons. When I press the "Cycle" button on the X-Touch, it lights up and "Cycle" is activated in Cubase. If I press the button again, the light goes out on the controller and "Cycle" is deactivated in Cubase. If "Cycle" is activated in Cubase and I click the "Cycle" icon on screen," Cycle" is deactivated and the light (on the button) goes out on the X-Touch. This is how it supposed to work and it does, just fine, under Mackie Control. However I can't get it to work with MIDI Control. I can activate and deactivate "Cycle" in Cubase, but I can turn off the button's light, once it's lit. I get the feeling that this is a communication issue, with feedback from Cubase to the controller. Don't get me started with the transport controls (play, rec, stop, etc.) If you decide to do a follow-up video, it would be appreciated if you looked into this. Perhaps you'll come across a solution when you make profiles for your other controllers.
Hi Sven, I see exactly what you’re talking about. The reason why I didn’t touch on this is because the controllers I use just meant to transmit, not receive from Cubase. I didn’t touch on that in this video- I mainly focus on CC controllers. For something like the X-Touch I would use it’s proprietary protocol (MC) like I do with the CC121. I don’t know why you would want to use this as a generic controller since it already supports Cubase with Mackie Control. Is there a specific reason?
@@DomSigalas Why don't I use the X-Touch with with MC like you do with your CC121? Actually I do, but it's a total mess to set-up. One big issue with MC is that every manufacturer has it's own idea on what note#/CC should reference what parameter. And the manufacturers are louse on sharing this info! It's a detective work worthy of Sherlock Holmes to track down the correct information. Cubase and your CC121 is made by the same company, so there probably is some parameter correlation. Cubase and X-Touch One isn't, so there is none. The great strength with Cubase's MIDI Control feature is that I don't have to worry about what MIDI messages the controller sends. It's all "connected" in Cubase. That's why it so easy and fast to program. I could probably write and record an album of songs in the time saved, by not having to mess with MC programming. Another thing is that, with MIDI Control, I can program Pages. And thereby multiply the cababilities of the controller. Something that can't be done with MC. As far as the feedback is concerned. It imortant for ANY controller that has lit buttons. Including your Monogram controller. At approximately 19:40 you show how you've programmed three push-knobs to turn on/off the FX sends *. However, to see whether they are on or off, you need to have the Track Settings (or Mixer) window open. That is an extra distraction. If you have the on/off status feed back to the Monogram, you'll be able to see if an FX send is on or off by just glancing at the controller. As this a basic funtionality of any controller controller (!?) feature, I'm sure it's possible with MIDI Control. I just havn't been able to figure out how (yet). * This is actually a great idea. If you don't mind, I think I will "steal" it from you. ;)
Hi Dom, since I have discovered this channel I have learned a ton of info from you. I have recently bought a cheap controller: EZ-Creator Fade (Devine) and I was not sure of how to configure this in Cubase. With this video a new world has opened to me. I will be starting to assign the controller to all my things. I can even put it on my keyboard and start recording with the press of a key. Thank you for this. I have a suggestion: make a course or training online for sale...
Please make a video about how to upgrade from elicenser based product to steinberg new licensing system or please share the link if any video has been made already. Please 🙏
thanks! next step steinberg please let us map vst parameter (without using quick control) and dedicated page dynamically load per vst (take a look at studio one)
Would love to see you tackle the Komplete Kontrol - it's listed under Legacy in the Remote MIDI devices so maybe we have to delete it from there and rebuild it in Cubase using this new method? Cant find much on what we can do with the KK since this feature came out.
It works exactly the same way with KK :) You just need to set it to midi generic mode (not NKS) and then it should appear in the list of midi controllers. Then you can start mapping away. I think the device name should appear like Komplet Kontrol Midi or something ;)
Dom, like the video. I’m using Cubase 12 Artist. I’ve just bought an M-Audio Oxygen Pro 61 interactive Keyboard. Yes it does the basic function mapped. Knobs are used as Panners. Sliders work as you’d expect. Pads are very basic. Saw some reviews that say the Pads aren’t great. Do you do any videos using Cubase 12 along with the M-Audio Oxygen Pro 61. There must be other things I can add…even to assign pads for selecting Instruments. As you know, the instrument page shows lots of onscreen knobs, that I’d lobe to be able to adjust via the keyboard. I should say, I’m a retired Haematologist..not a sound engineer. I’m current playing. Thank you, Donald Easton.
I had some problems with the transport panel of the Arturia KeyLab 61 sending SysEx-/MMC-Commands. I had to change the transport field knobs in the Arturia Midi Control Center not to send MMC/SysEx-Commands but CC Commands.
I LOVE CUBASE!!!!! I was strugling with the mapping of my Oxygen Pro 61... I just made a template for the Mixer, I gonna spend a lot of time making templates on Cubase 13 :)
Hey I got the same controller. M-audio's "how to setup for Cubase" guide is useless, I ended up making a custom preset in the oxygen pro preset editor instead. I know how to make the Oxygen Pro's LEDs work for proper LED feedback as well but am yet to implement this as a Cubase MIDI Remote Script.
Dom, thank you very much! My suggestion to Steinberg for developing this direction is to make LED feedback in MIDI remote for devices like Launchpad, Akai APC / Akai Fire.
I have watched this tutorial a dozen times. I have my LaunchControlXL doing amazing tricks for me now. But I need CC11 and CC1 on two faders for expression and modulation. I can't find how to do this. Can anyone jump in and give me a hand with this? Dom? I am a convert from Logic and I love Cubase for Orchestral composing. Dom, you are an inspiration and have helped me climb way up the learning ladder! Thank You!!
WOW, thanks Dom!! I´m also use the Monogram CC with Cubase. It´s really nice and, thanks to your explanation, now I know how I can set it up. I´m really happy!!! I also interested in a video about Quick Controls.
Hi Dom! thanks again for everything, I am truly grateful for all your very useful content. I have a question about controlling the Cubase zoom function: I have a midi controller and Im trying to make one turning knob into a zoom in and zoom out function. It look like I can only assign on knob to zoom in and one knob to zoom out. how can I make it so that when i turn it clockwise I can get zoom in and the other way the zoom out? If you know please share. Thanks a lot
Hey Dom thanks for another informative video. I wrote to Cubase support but maybe you can tell them if we can adjust font size to the buttons, it would be great. I have Akai mpk 261 and 16 pads and 4 layer so you can set 64 commands but on screen font size which is written on button is not clear to read because of too small. Thanks
@@DomSigalas Shot in the dark ... but maybe this is a 4K monitor DPI issue? On windows anyway it is easy to set custom DPI adjustment in the host program for the plugin GUIs, etc.
Thanks alot for the awesome tutorial Dom! I'm a big fun!hope you can make a tutorial about the cubase quick control.thanks again! have a goood day Dom!
Quick question : does that mean that I could build a profile to any old midi control, such as a Behringer BCF or BCF, a Tascam US2400, etc. ? Looks like it!
Excellent tutorial, was able to set up an Akai APC40 which has not been getting used much at all. It is fantastic having 8+1 well built channel faders and able to arm record, solo, mute, and monitor at the press of a button, per channel. Top 8 dials are setup using your Quick Control idea. Also setup individual monitor/phones on/off switches for click audio, and 2 of the remaining 8 dials for click volume. That is super useful! This and your control room setup video have been incredibly helpful. so thanks 😁
Can you please do a video of CC Monogram and Logic. I bought CC Monogram and Spitfire BBC Professional (after watching your videos!). I have Cuebase, Ableton and Logic Studio….and am most familiar with Logic. When I try to use Logic, the CC Monogram, BBC professional in Logic I get block cords crashing and then piano metronome…neither of which I want….I have tried setting up the CC according to the Spitfire recommendations…. I’m just a hobbyist trying to learn to eventually compose ….I have a Yamaha Montage 88 and Ableton Push 2 for other controllers. Any direction would be appreciated!!!
Informative video Dom. Now how can I use my MIDI Remote creation for my hardware to control all the functions I want to on a virtual instrument? I just upgraded yesterday, and I'm legit confused how to get that working. Cheers !
unbelievably cool video. exactly this video is once again the reason why i'm getting a controller with many knobs, so i can control e.g. the channel EQ or various vst plugins. after this video i'm not too worried about not being able to do it :D
Dom' awesome as always, but how about a way to quickly zoom through our hundreds of plugins? Would save time and usage for us plugin junkies. Maybe that feature is in Nuendo 12 hopefully?
Just for those who want to use the Orbit wheel to control the project cursor. Set the Orbit to 'Keyboard Mode', not Midi Mode. Here you set a different keyboard shortcut to the left and right turn operations. Now set your left and right 'Nudge' keyboard shortuts to these in Cubase and it will now scroll the cursor for you.
Once again, another brilliant tutorial, Dom. Thank you. Quick question: Can I use a controller (like Monogram) alongside an already connected DAW controller (like my Pro G2)? Is that what you're doing?
Unfortunately, this doesn't work with motorised faders (for example on mixing consoles) - The faders lock up as Cubase receives and sends the midi messages, and end up fighting themselves. In 12.10, Steinberg introduced a check box that can disable sending messages back to the hardware, but who'd want a bunch of faders that don't return to where they should be when you rewind, or follow fader moves etc. Will be good when it works though! Looking forward to it.
yes Im checking this video just for this feature, seem no video is mentioning motorized fader, steinberg is really at a lost on how to handle this feature
@@tinpanalleyoldstuff6209 just use mackie protocol, in midi page add a mackie control device and all is good. it took cubase up to 12 to implement a half cooked midi remote, only fader and dial work, no motor no x/y pad or joystick or mod wheel or rotary dial
Hey Dom please show us this on your average bog standard midi controller keyboard . I have tried on mine and little is being recognised. I have noticed that the general run of the mill midi controllers that most of us have there is NO actualt demonstration. I mean your videos are a1 but how many have the Monogram cc controllers?
Hi Paul, the procedure I showed here is exactly the same like with any basic midi controller. There’s not much more to show to be honest :) if a controller is not recognised, this means that it doesn’t transmit a cc message- you certainly don’t need an expensive controller (or Monogram) to program Midi Remote but the controller *does* need to transmit CC :)
@@DomSigalas Thanks Dom. I actually sold an old keyboard and for same price purchased the same one you were using in another video launchkey mk3 49. But i am not as all techi and i dont seem to be able to control plugins ..the other basic controls are ok. So with past failures in mind (!) i was going to ship it back this week
Fantastic vid! Now if you have 8 faders on your controller, and you like to layer 8 separate VST synth sounds on top of each other (piano, strings, voices, pads, etc), can you use your controller as a VST synth mixer where each of the 8 faders are assigned to just the VOLUME of each of the 8 individual VST synths you are layering? I cant seem to work out how to do this reliably.
Very cool Dom! Not sure if anyone else has experienced this but Cubase 12 effects panel becomes useless as soon as you use a couple of effects so I'm back on Cubase 11 until the first update happens in a few months.
I share your concerns re Cubase 12. I've just integrated the new Streamdeck Cubase Pro in to 12 and after first use it was awesome. It has an Halion Sonic SE section which controls all the instrument rotary controls. Looked fantastic until 30 mins after use my computer decided it was rebooting - when I stopped it, behind Cubase were 3 general exception errors for Halion!! All too flaky at the moment.
@@mattsynth I'm using the templates created by SideshowFX and they use LoopMidi as the interface between Cubase & Streamdeck. The latest version takes advantage of Midi Remote by controlling individual apps - they have used Halion first but I am sure there is more to come!?
Incredible Dom thank you so much, this feature will give life to my Dj controller full of cc bottons and knob! I'm waiting the QC video too. Big thanks God bless you❤️
I just got the Djtechtools Midi Fighter Twister (midi controller) and Im aseptically interested in using it for plugins so hope you'll make one about quick control. Thanks so much and keep doing great things!
Fantastic video Dom. For me, the new MIDI Mapping feature in Cubase 12 is just sensational and the best thing about this version. The sad thing now though is that my beloved CC121 and maybe yours too, has now taken "back stage" to my other controllers, those that I always wanted to integrate with Cubase and couldn't then but now can! Having said that though, my CC121 is not for sale and surprisingly, I still find myself using it even for example, after MIDI mapping my Impulse 61. You can never get enough controllers!😃
Hi, congratulations for the tutorials. I carefully followed the programming for a new midi control system for automations in Cubase 13. I can't pair CC 11- 7 - 21 with Icon PlatformM+. Could you help me out or post more relevant videos? Thank you Ugo
Dear Dom, I am a new Cubase AND new MODX user. I love your content. I feel overwhelmed by all there is to learn of the tech, to get a first project started through to done. Can you please advise on a learning path? Ex: Learn x then y then a, b, c then z? I would pay a fee for just a startup guide on which of your key videos (and any others you recommend) to get going. Or is there a class or program you recommend? Thanks!
Hello Dom, I have a Novation Launchkey mini II . I found your tutorial super usefull and I almost got everything to work but one function. I would like to recreate the function of the F3 where you can toggle between the mixer and the project window , I can get the mixer but I could not find how to go back to the project window. I would not mind using two bottoms on my launchkey. Thanks !!
A critical thing I think Dom forgot to mention is that you can also map a control to an AI Knob function... much like what the CC121 has. Also like The Knob... though, of course, The Knob can work across all apps and Cubase MIDI Remote AI knob functionality only works inside Cubase.
@@DomSigalas That'd be awesome. I want to know how close to the AI knob we can get, since it is more than just a mouse hover control. The jog functionality is unrivaled so far.

Also setup individual monitor/phones on/off switches for click audio, and 2 of the remaining 8 dials for click volume. That is super useful! This and your control room setup video have been incredibly helpful. so thanks 😁
Please do quick control vst video.
Aha! it makes so much sense now! Thanks Dom.
Always helpful and a pleasure to view - keep on doing this Dom ,-) thx
Informative video Dom. Now how can I use my MIDI Remote creation for my hardware to control all the functions I want to on a virtual instrument? I just upgraded yesterday, and I'm legit confused how to get that working. Cheers !
Wow. Such a game changer. Thanks Dom!!
That's good Dom THX
unbelievably cool video. exactly this video is once again the reason why i'm getting a controller with many knobs, so i can control e.g. the channel EQ or various vst plugins. after this video i'm not too worried about not being able to do it :D
Me Too
Great explanation Dom!
Not for me, but here you have a comment and a like ! Your content is Gold 💚
Legend!
@@DomSigalas 😘
This is a game changer for Cubase 12. Just upgraded and looking forward to digging into this.
"Game changer" has become a cliche, but I agree, this is a game changer.
Can u make a tutorial to assign the console 1 MK2 to the cubase channelstrip? I don't know how to set console 1 in midi mode
Dom' awesome as always, but how about a way to quickly zoom through our hundreds of plugins? Would save time and usage for us plugin junkies. Maybe that feature is in Nuendo 12 hopefully?
Hmm how about MPC X in standalone for Qlinks.. I might need to have nerd day and find out 😆
I've been waiting for this, thank you!
dom!!!! excellent!!!!! please make a video explaning deep vst cc and track cc
Is there a control template set-up 4 the Novation Launch Pad Pro Mk3? If not no worry your video r great. Thanks
Thanks Dom
Any time!
Hi Dom, thank you for such a great video! As you asked re: doing a video on QC? I say yes please, that would be really helpful, thanks!
Man, you make Cubase fun for me. Thank you Dom. I mean it. You are just great!
Happy to hear that!
Thanks Dom.
Once again, another brilliant tutorial, Dom. Thank you.
Quick question: Can I use a controller (like Monogram) alongside an already connected DAW controller (like my Pro G2)? Is that what you're doing?
I'm just glad that we can finally assign a midi controller to pregain easily now lol
wow. id like to see more about QC
@@etact8888 Still doesnt work, all these months later 😞
@@tinpanalleyoldstuff6209 just use mackie protocol, in midi page add a mackie control device and all is good. it took cubase up to 12 to implement a half cooked midi remote, only fader and dial work, no motor no x/y pad or joystick or mod wheel or rotary dial
Scaled takeover mode! When was scaled introduced? It's amazing because even a really cheap MIDI controller will work OK in that mode.
Exactly!!!
Very useful info'. Thank you Dom.
Hey Dom nice video.
i like your cubase display on your desk in the background.
where/how can i get it?
I have a link in the description ;)
@@alain_de_frothcorn Does Cubase MIDI Remote see Streamdeck? I was thinking of getting one.
@@mattsynth I'm using the templates created by SideshowFX and they use LoopMidi as the interface between Cubase & Streamdeck. The latest version takes advantage of Midi Remote by controlling individual apps - they have used Halion first but I am sure there is more to come!?
"When you do this, you're going to be way, way faster, I promise you!" LMAO
Incredible Dom thank you so much, this feature will give life to my Dj controller full of cc bottons and knob! I'm waiting the QC video too. Big thanks God bless you❤️
Boom, that was great Dom, Thanks. BTW the encoder jitter problem is a NI Maschine only problem.
Thank you Dom. BTW the encoder jitter only comes from NI Maschine when using it as a controller. All other controllers work great.
This is strange- maybe an issue with the Maschine? Have you set it in midi generic mode?
I just got the Djtechtools Midi Fighter Twister (midi controller) and Im aseptically interested in using it for plugins so hope you'll make one about quick control. Thanks so much and keep doing great things!
Hi Dom, how is the workflow with Komplete Kontrol S49/61/88 mk2 with this? Any key limitations or bottlenecks? Any amazing findings?
Hi Dom, I'm a fan of your tutorials.
Can you use more controllers at the same time? Thnx.
Yes of course you can!
Thanks Dom! But if when I touch one of my buttons and cubase treat it as piano note. I deal with M-Audio Keystation 61
Thank you Dom, Is there a way you can create a macro that inserts a specific plugin in a selected channel?
Awesome Dom👍 would love a video on the quick controllers. Also did i read that bluetooth midi was a thing in v12? That would be cool too.
Hi, congratulations for the tutorials.
I carefully followed the programming for a new midi control system for automations in Cubase 13.
I can't pair CC 11- 7 - 21 with Icon PlatformM+.
Could you help me out or post more relevant videos?
Thank you
Ugo
Absolutely- I am actually planning to make a dedicated video about this to be honest- I want to get all the potential right ;)
@@DomSigalas That'd be awesome. I want to know how close to the AI knob we can get, since it is more than just a mouse hover control. The jog functionality is unrivaled so far.
