DCS F/A-18 No Nonsense Beginner's Tutorial - Startup, Basic Air Weapons, & Landing

  • PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION - Timestamps below! This is a bare essentials tutorial for anyone who may have interest in DCS and their more complicated modules like the F-18, but is a bit intimidated or put off by the seemingly complicated controls and steep learning curve. THIS IS NOT IN ANY WAY MEANT TO BE AN ACCURATE WAY TO USE THE F/A-18. My goal in this video is to show you the absolute minimum (which is quite low IMO) that you need to know to jump in the plane and start doing fun things.
    Section Timestamps:
    Controls: 00:50
    Startup: 05:16
    Taxi & Takeoff: 11:58
Air to Air Weapons Employment: 15:51
    Landing: 30:09
For anyone who wants to download the mission file with the target drones already set up, I've made that download available here: mega.nz/file/s0kRERTB#i4EJ5Mn...
Just add it to your DCS Saved Games folder (usually found in C:\Users\YOUR_USER\Saved Games\DCS\Missions

Hey everyone! Glad this video has been helpful to so many people! Just as an FYI: I've got an F-16 no nonsense beginner's guide in the works, now that ED had got the module mostly working as intended. After that if you're into these kind of tutorials, I can probably do a part 2 followup advanced tutorial for the planes to help out for those who want to move past the basics of the plane, adding things like ground attack and more advanced systems, but feel intimidated by the 300+ page or whatever it is manual for these planes by ED. Look for those in the future

      Hi mate, very interesting video.
I have been debating wether or not to try this game, is there a setting where you select the aircraft so that it's just ready to fly??

    • @AedynWolf
      @AedynWolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@maydaygoingdown5602 There is actually. In the main menu, there should be an option called "Instant Action", which offers you different scenarios in a plane that is ready to fly with a mostly appropriate load out from the start. Cuts out all the prep work you normally have to do in case that's not really your thing

Just picked up DCS and this module and I have watched over 100+ other tutorials/channels before coming across your channel. This is hands down the most beginner friendly/under-rated dcs tutorial I have ever seen.
You somehow managed to cover essential binds, basic startup procedure, taxiing, takeoff, basic radar + target acquisition/locking, weapon modes/selection/firing, and landing in less time than 99% of every other "beginner" video took to cover just ONE MAYBE TWO of the 9+ topics you covered.
I'm gonna watch all your tutorials. Forever a new subscriber and I will make it my life's duty to send every noob I know/come across to your channel.

I think on the startup, radar switch should be set to standby until ready for takeoff. Radar on the ground is a severe hazard to personnel and electronic equipment. Full power radar can kill, it's basically like the gun of a microwave pointed at you. It doesn't really matter in a sim, but if you want to spare your simulated ground crew... :D

Apparently the radar on the Hornet doesn't transmit with weight on wheels, so the correct procedure is to switch it to operate.

Hands down the best tutorial for DCS F/A-18 that I've seen, and I've watched a lot of them! I really like the way you explain things simply, but thoroughly. Hopefully, you will continue to do this series. I'd like to see more in-depth advanced systems tutorials from you also, because the way you describe things is very clear. It seems that tutorials by other people are done in a way that sort of assumes we know what we're doing, and so they tend to gloss over important details. A+

Much appreciated. Came back to DCS after a 7 year break. So much has improved. So way back to learner status again for me. After watching literally scores of videos on TH-cam your tutorial brought me into a sense of being in DCS again. Your video is one of the most simple and easy to understand videos I have watched over the past few weeks. You helped me to program my joystick, which is the VKB Gladiator NXT EVO, and also to get into the air for some fun. Of course it would be helpful to move past the basics. Please make a part 2 !. Still lots to learn.

Just the tutorial I was looking for lot of tutorials out there but they don’t say and show what keys to use. With this one you can program a stick better and I also was confused why the radar cues wouldn’t move until I saw this one. I think the designers made a great sim but for people that work and have families. You don’t have the time to spend learning and figuring out what to program. I spend about an hour a week on flight sims. Thats all I have but now with this tutorial I can go configure my sticks and get some valuable seat time. Thanks look forward to your next video

Just got this module last night. Tried it out. I actually landed the plane with zero tutorial on the first training mission (which starts you in the air). So I'm liking it so far and I'm learning it a lot faster than the A-10C which I've nearly mastered. One thing I will say about the F-18 is making sure the cockpit is FULLY closed. I made the mistake last night of thinking that I closed it, and then watching it fly off as I left the runway.....LOL
