I look at and treat my apartment much the same and I am a black woman who’s lived here for almost 30 years, understanding that whomever they hired to build the place - was likely the lowest bidder.😆 Work that I’ve done here over the course of time, knowing I’ll not likely get my security deposit back anyway: Hung many shelves and ledges. Painted Unclogged the tub myself Replaced the stem for cold water on the bathroom faucet Replaced the wood beam support and bracket under my main kitchen drawer so it no longer leans and falls out Replaced the singular handle on the kitchen sink Replaced the Masonite in the lower kitchen cabinets after a pipe fail as the superintendent didn’t seem interested Retiled, caulked, insulated, sealed, and painted my pantry Replaced the defrost timer and thermostat in my refrigerator. Retiled the kitchen floor Repaired loose tiles in the bathroom as, I don’t think they used cement board to support it Installed a cabinet from Target under the sink in my bathroom, cutting out the pipe hole myself, installing semi-opaque decorative film in the glass door and replacing the knob with a frosted glass pink knob to match other bathroom accessories Repaired openings in drywall joints And, yes, most people would ask why. I do so because I don’t like management here and I know they don’t care about doing a decent job - that I would be stuck living with.
I've also lived in the same place for a long time and I think we SHOULD get our deposit back no matter what we did because they would have to do that work anyway. For example, I paint my walls whatever color I want. I've been here over 10 years, so they would have to put a fresh coat on when I move out, even if I kept it boring. :)
M K I agree but, it’s a game. If/when I move out, unless I make it look as if I never lived here, they’re going to tell me that I’ve forfeited my security deposit. Then, they’re going to do like they did to the apartment downstairs a few years ago. The guy that lived there left the place looking like a crime scene, it was so filthy. He probably didn’t care about getting his security deposit back, because his ex-wife bought another house and give him their old one back. But, the landlord updated the apartment. Brand new appliances, fixtures, cabinets, paint, carpeting. I know because I snuck down there to see the the progress and updates, before the new tenant moved in. I think she pays about $200 more than I do for lesser space as, my front and back staircases impinge upon her closet and pantry space. Originally, I believe 1st floor apartments here cost less, but someone has to pay for all of that new stuff and the modernization of everything. So, the landlord likely kept the old tenant’s security deposit, and is making extra on the new tenant, although they may have paid next to nothing for the contracted work. I’m not completely knocking it. I’m just saying that, to the tenant, it is often considered their home. To the landlord, it is simply an occupied unit. I also understand this because I’ve realized that, while the smoke detectors are hardwired and connected every few apartments, the carbon monoxide detectors are not. Why? Because the life of a tenant is nothing in comparison to the cost of the apartment. Fire can take out an apartment. Carbon monoxide only leaves your red, bloated body. In addition to that, we have Pacific circuit breaker boxes. That there is a fire hazard and a no no. But, they’re probably just hoping for the best, than concern themselves with the cost of replacing all of them in this complex.
You have inspired me to engineer my rented apartment with all sorts of hacks. Under and over cabinet lighting pluged into a wireless foax wall switch, foax wall coverings to hide yucky tile, foax fireplace with built in look shelves, expanded window sills (plywood attached with velcro command strips), lots of temp wallpaper, diy wall sconce with upcycled construction lights, inexpensive drum lampshades and yes the pie plate threading trick!, ikea hacked privacy 'glass' for my balcony and just this last weekend, a 100% non-attached pull down screen and 'hanging' projector system. You've inspired me to saw, hammer and life hack my appartment to make it mine. I hope you continue to inspire others!
Oh, I am so glad to see the pull out drawers. I not only plan to do them in my kitchen, I plan to use them in my motorhome. I have a very narrow closet, I want it to be a pantry. Now, watching you, I know how to do it. I already purchased the drawer glides, I am ready! Thank you and blessings!
Just discovered your videos today. And I've been bingewatching them for a couple of hours now. I have the exact philosophy of life where I find the biggest join creating or fixing" things in my household to even just make things slightly more convenient regardless where i live and what type of property i live in. Can't wait to finish watching all of your videos!!!! Now to answer your question, I'm most intrigued by the trash can slider (which is something I've wanted in my home for years), except with one twist - (say if i had a kitchen just like yours) i'd take down the cabinet door first and somehow hook it onto the slider system. That way, I can easily access the trash can even if I'm standing right next to the fridge instead of walking 2 extra steps and opening cabinet door first. Again, love love your videos!! I've learned some much already!

Pull out trash, definitely! I have one. So much nicer than garbage can sitting out. I replaced my faucet and kept the old one to reinstall when I move. I am now evaluating under cabinet lights....

My favorite is the slide out. I live in rental housing and, due to a medical condition, this would make life so much better for me. Then I like the new faucet because, as you stated, most rental don't have the convenience of a high arched style nor the sprayer. Thanks for the video, I really like your style!

So ill head to home depot in the new week or two and get that red handy tool. New and proper caulking also. Ive put xmas lights under our cabinets. lol. The guy roommates like it.
I discovered those drawer slide outs a few years ago, and gradually installed them in my kitchen. They are one of my favorite things. My favorite idea was the under the Sink pull out shelf I've been wanting to do this for quite a while now. and this shows me the solution of how to do it. Mine will probably turn out somewhat different, but you helped so much to do what I want to do easier. Thank you . All of your ideas are great. I will probably use some of the other ideas too.
The LED lights seem the quickest, easiest improvement, and one I will be thinking about when I move soon. But I really like the faucet improvement! I see that as an excellent way to improve the sink area look. The tension rod idea was just brilliant! 👍
Thought I was an adult. But modding your rental apartment is a whole new level of tasking. Until now, I’ve only used solutions that don’t involve drilling into walls and replacing appliances. Especially if the landlord requires them to be removed upon move-out.

Hi, i always wanted to do something like this in my kitchen. I have a modern mini ktchen where everything is tiny. The bottom cabinets are so hard to put things in it and get them out without getting on my knees. I am physically challenged which makes it worse. These pull out drawer is a game changer. I can always take them with me wherever I go next. I will look at all your kitchen videos you have on the list. However, if you havent made things for physically challenged people, here is a challenge for you. Hope to see videos to help me in my situation. Thank you.
I used to rent and move every couple years. Did upgrades in every place. Like you, plumbing, shelving, closets especially. Not one landlord ever complained. I left what I did too, and I suspect they either didn't even realize there were small but nicer updates, or they knew it was an upgrade and made their place more likely to rent, next time around. Bold blue paint was not something I ever tried, LoL! Looks great in your kitchen tho!

We bought a major fixer upper last year & the kitchen is a nightmare. I loved the slide out garbage can. I’m definitely going to do it once we repaint the cupboards! Absolutely love your DIY’s, they’re absolutely genius haha

Loved how you did your makeover for your rented kitchen. the underlights to the cupboards were awesome and I the kitchen faucets. Those are the two things I will change. Aso the backsplach to the cooker is an excellent idea which again I will be doing. Thanks for the video and information.

I like everything you have done to this kitchen even the backsplash. You are so good. Please invest in buying your own space. You can do it. I don't know if you have a boyfriend but you are perfectly sufficient on your own. Of course if you have one I support you. I have done my balcony makeover thanks to you.
