The “ritual” was foreshadowed multiple times I believe in the second episode that you mentioned I believe when megumi fought 3 finger sukuna after yuji let him take over for that finger bearer ( unsure of the episode ) And when Todo was beating megumi up before the exchange exam Pretty much when megumi is inconvenienced 😂
@@mattchumoore4214additionally, Megumi also considered using it in his last battle in season 1 fighting the special grade cursed spirit, right before he decided to instead use an incomplete domain so that he doesnt savrifice his own life. I think that's all the moments but i could be wrong :D
Where you remember him saying that was when the trio went to go confirm the deaths at the juvenile center, and then it turned out to be a special grade curse born of sukuna's finger. Then Sukuna came out because they needed him to defeat the special grade. He did that, then went outside, ripped out yuji's heart and then beat up Megumi to the point where he was ready to give up. That's when he said that Sacred swing ring line, but before he could use it, Yuji took over the body again and then 'died'.
11:40 to explain that situation, Mahoragas ability is to adapt to things, he does this gradually as his wheel turns. Sukuna so far had been hitting Maho with one of his slashing techniques "dismantle", so he thought Maho had only adapted to "dismantle" alone. So Sukuna decided to bring out his domain, which would pelt Maho with both "dismantle" and a new type of slash "cleave" and figured it would kill Maho before a new adaption, however he misunderstood, Maho didnt just adapt to "dismantle" but the concept of "slashes" as a whole. This finally prompted Sukuna to use his fire arrow to finish Maho off with something he knew 100% had not been adapted to. Hope that wasnt too long...
Good explanation. I was a little disappointed the anime didn’t explain it better, but I knew it was going to be difficult to convey given what would be happening in the scene. Man I really wish we had gotten the shot of the arrow before impact, one of my favorite panels from the series.
@@TheViv06 I think the biggest ordeal plp had is just how absurdly crazy the visuals were that it was sorta hard to compare it to the expo at the time. Needed time to process them both individually.
And his walk was animated on 1. Meaning that he moves every frame, and we have 24 frames per second. So for around 5 seconds it required 24 drawings for 1 second. 24*5=220 frames were drawn.
Also fun fact: The OP is written from the perspective of the villain, its basically Sukuna taunting Yuji. Playing it here is essentially listening to Sukuna dance and sing on Yujis mental grave

Good catch about Megumi. He was about to summon this beast MULTIPLE times throughout Season 1, actually. Basically, every time he felt like he was going to lose, he tried to cast this. It's why his domain expansion moment and the flashback with gojo was so important, so you should maybe give his domain expansion episode (I think it was 23) a rewatch. The fact that Megumi always had this shikigami in the back of his mind, and viewed it as a guaranteed win card via suicide, meant that he was limiting his own growth because he knew he can't technically LOSE a fight. He didn't view death as a loss, and that's what Gojo corrected him on. The exact quote was something along the lines of "Risking death to win and dying to win are two different things." Some (I'm not sure if it's all, since this is just off the top of my head) of the times he was about to summon this beast in season 1 are: -The second episode, as you pointed out. Gojo stops him. -Again against Sukuna in episode... 5, I believe. This time he gets stopped by Yuji, who sacrifices himself to stop Sukuna. This is where Sukuna became interested in Megumi, and is the time he was referring to in this episode when he said that Megumi could have beaten him if he had summoned it "back then." -Against Hanami, but Inumaki stops him. -Again against Hanami, but Todo stops him. -Lastly, the aforementioned Megumi domain expansion episode (23 I think), where he for the first time is the one to stop himself. He decides to take Gojo's advice and give winning a shot himself instead of relying on his suicide trump card, and pulls off domain expansion for the first time. As for the line he says before casting it, it was used in the fight against Sukuna and in the domain expansion episode.
A little addition: He was going to summon Mahoraga against Todo when he was getting beat into a pulp. At this point I´ll just say Megumi just wanted to fcking die 💀💀💀

At that point, Megumi simply wanted to take the fight more seriously and perhaps just wanted to summon stronger shikigami. So far he has only used frogs and not attacked. Summoning Mahoragi would kill him and everyone around him, so it wouldn't make much sense considering Todo was more having fun than wanting to seriously hurt him/ kill him

Alright, here's the paragraph to explain Sukuna's domain expansion, Malevolent -Kitchen- Shrine. From what we see from different type of domain before, it's a separate space with it's own landscape within an enclosed barrier. We see how the barrier/domain look on the outside when Gojo is fighting Jogo the first time, and when Mahito firstly activate it. They're usually just a black circle. But Sukuna's domain do not have that same enclosed space. Just like how they explained it, "painting into the air without canvas", the full effect of the domain with it's sure-hit guaranteed are effective right throughout the surrounding without forming a domain as the rest did. So there's no space ambience that Gojo has, no arms hell of Mahito, and no Dagon's beach landscape. And now you would think that if Sukuna didn't enclosed his domain, surely the enemy can easily escape his domain right? Unfortunately my friend, the binding vow made that allow the enemy to escape make Sukuna able to expand the range of his domain up until 200 meter/656 feet. Imagine yourself sprinting through that distance. How far will you make until you're hit by one of Sukuna's slashing technique that are guaranteed to hit you.
In simple terms: sukuna is the chef, his domain the kitchen, and his opponents are the ingredients to be cut and burn . you free to run for your life if you can.

If anyone deserves the credit for not just this episode but JJK as a whole, it's the animators. For those who don't know, shortly before this episode aired quite a few animators of MAAPA, the studio behind this show, basically had mental breakdowns due to just how horrible it is to work for the studio and how critical fans have been of their JJK work. It's gotten to a point where the continuation of JJK after Season 2 has been called into question because of how overworked these people have been.
Why not give credit to the animators of every other show then? When it comes to mappa shows, its credit to animators but when its other shows, u show credit to the studio? Double standards lmao

that 30% was exaggeration. The animator who said that deleted that tweet. No anime can achieve 100% of their intended vision, even KyoAni can't do that. What they can do is try to get as close to 100% as possible. This episode was most likely 50-60%.
@@Arjun-ub5bh demon slayer's fights always stays "on model", you won't see much creatively in terms of unique artstyle or complex storyboards. JJK s2's director gave animators 100% freedom so every fight looks different, they have different artstyles and insanely creative storyboards, and they go "off model" and become less detail to give us more movements. Something Naruto used to do back in the day. So this ds-jjk comparison is not fair.
NON SPOILER EXPLANATION Megumi has crazy potential. We learned that someone with his technique tied with someone with gojos technique in the past. Meaning megumi can at least be equal to Gojo one day. Also we learn that mahoraga can adapt to any attack no matter what. Mahoraga was even adapting to sukuna domain which is why he had to switch to the fire arrow. If mahoraga adapts to all of your attacks you will loose. Megumi has the most potential and Gojo and Sukuna know it.
Sukuna just wanted Megumi's body to use Mahoraga as a blueprint to bypass Gojo's Infinity without having to resort to fully reincarnated to his true form, because Sukuna (and Gojo) knew that after beating Gojo, he still had to contest with the big 3 (Yuta, Maki and Hikari). Sukuna and Gojo even knew a simple Red would one-shot a buffed Maho pre-adaptation.

Megumi's technique works like this: you summon a shikigami, you defeat it, and now it's under your control. Since Mahoraga has never actually been subjugated, he can still summon it as many times as he wants in an "attempt" to subjugate it. This time, he summoned it in front of blonde dude to make him a part of the subjugation ritual. As such, even if Mahoraga was defeated, he wouldn't be under Megumi's control, but the blonde guy was still obligated to fight him.

That was most likely hyperbolic. That said, plenty of animators said multiple times over the past week that this episode wasn't even finished, and wouldn't be. The rest of the season is gonna be bad, because production has all but thrown itself off a cliff at this point with how hard the MAPPA execs have been working their animators into the ground. Here's hoping none of the animators die trying to make the rest of the season look anything more than half decent.

Sukuna doesn't give a damn, and can unleash his domain in the real world, "painting on air". Because there is no barrier, technically you could run away, but because of that his range is much greater. I don't think anyone has done that before, except for Megumi, but he used enclosed spaces in which he used Chimera Shadow Garden, his domain. (end of S1, fight with Dagon, and REDACTED)
A simple explanation into Sukuna's abilities in this ep His main CT involves slashing in general and comprises of 2 types (his fire arrow is still a mystery today) 1)Dismantle- A normal but powerful slash 2)Cleave-A slash that can adjust to the target's cursed energy levels so as to cut them down in one fell swoop Now his domain, Malevolent Shrine, is considered a divine feat in JJK. The reason why is because his domain does not have a barrier whatsoever, which means he can't trap his opponent inside his domain. Its basically the same as using a software but without any hardware. However in return for allowing an escape route for his opponent, his domain's range is greatly increased to a 200 meter radius. This is the pact that was formed. And in his domain, Dismantle will destroy any inanimate object while Cleave destroys anything with cursed energy. This will continue endlessly until his opponent is completely annihilated. Hope you guys can understand this!! (Love you guys btw)
@@y4hiko543 thats a pretty spoilery message to type out. But yes sukunas domain isnt a different technique to normal shrines, its just a more refined version. Nothing is stopping him from creating a "normal" enclosed domain.
This moment was foreshadowed many times in season 1: - first time for sure was when megumi fought sukuna (that made sukuna actually get interested in megumi - second time was during megumi-maki fight against Hanami - third time was during the fight against the special grade, just before deciding to try to use the domani expansion Basically, Mahoraga has been Megumi’s trump card since the beginning. He was ready to sacrifice himself using it and destroying whatever the enemy was.

The OST when Sukuna opened his domain is absolutely stellar. It's so eerie and has this mythical sound to it, like in some traditional south east asian music it fits the theme of Sukuna being this almost demonic evil entity.
Megumi did understand the power of this creature, and he knows it has never been subjugated, he has not subjugated it himself. He summoned it not because Shigemo is wuch a tough oponent, but since he thought he was dying and he was going to bleed out. He was sacrificing himself by bringing Shigemo into the subjugation ritual. The moment both of them died the creature disappeared, so he wasn't unleashing it on the town. The main problem was that Sukuna saved him, so the ritual didn't close and the whole chunk of the city got destroyed in a lot of people died.
From a pacing perspective, they really should go on a hiatus right now, as the point this episode ended on is the perfect place to put it on break. They won't have another better place to put it on a hiatus until the end of the season.
I'm not sure if anyone already explained this but about Megumi's intention when he summoned Mahoraga: since Megumi included another person in the subjugulation ritual - as he was about to do in previous situations in S1 - the ritual would have been ended - meaning Mahoraga will go back to where it came from - once two of them involved in the ritual are dead. That is why Sukuna decided to get involved, keep the pony tail guy alive, and fight Mahoraga as an outsider of the ritual. (He actually explain this before step into the fight.) Yes, Megumi knew he was about to summon the powerful beast that he can't control but he would have thought the situation will be solved quickly as he dragged Haruta(ponytail) into the ritual which is why he kept walked while bleeding, so that they can move to the empty and big space that would bring minimum destruction I imagine. He would have never imagined Sukuna will come and fight that thing.
They probably played the opening when Yuji was vomiting as a symbol to the start of his suffering. It's a way of saying "this is just the beginning". Pretty cool if you ask me.
Megumi try to use this in ep 1 against Sukuna, ep 5 against Sukuna 3 fingers ( that time he said "Sacred Treasure" lines), against Hanami but Inumaki stopped he, against Hanami (in the same ep) but Todo and Yuji stopped he and in ep 23 but he changed he change his mind and give up to sacrifice himself to risks death( when he go crazy and make his first domain expansion)( that time he said the "Sacred Treasure" lines again)
At the beginning, Megumi only summoned Mahoraga to fight Haruta (since he was about to die either way), afterwards it would have disappeared since the subjugation ritual would have failed (btw Megumi's VA is saying Makora which is another reading for it's name, so either works). The only reason the fight kept going is because Sukuna intervened and attacked it as an outsider. Also the reason they played the OP at the end during Yuji's breakdown is because the lyrics of the song are sung from the Villains PoV (in this case Sukuna's PoV) thus mocking Yuji for his way of life and his current state (similar to how he mocked Yuji after Junpei died). It's a shame the translators couldn't include a translation for English speakers but it's easy enough to find if you're interested.
Sukunas domain expansion doesn't trap the opponent, it leaves the domain open for up to 200 meters and it sends every single one of his attacks millions of times within those 200 m, so the entire city, the people, and the shikigami are getting sliced and diced, but since it recovers from the cuts before it can recover, Sukuna attacks it with his fire arrow. I love how this episode makes some of the scenes look almost dream-like and that just enhances how horrible and terrifying it is
MAPPA Animator is the real MVP. Giving justice to the Manga, hope they will have a Better situation in the near Future. All credit the the animators.👏👏👏
It's the fact that this episode wasn't up to par with what the animators wanted this ep to be, baffles me because of how stunning it was! I wouldn't mind if jjk gets delayed if it means we could get top notch eps and the animators don't have to compromise with their vision. Let those poor people take all the break they want.
We saw multiple times in S1 that Megumi was about to unleash something powerful and throw his life away. But it's so funny that when it FINALLY gets used, it's against Haruta of all people. Mahoraga. Sukuna shows up and has fun for a bit but unlike with Jogo, he realizes that having fun won't be enough for this thing. If it adapts to all of his moves, there won't be a path to victory. So he has to take it out in one blow. Then he demolishes most of the city, annihilates SO MANY PEOPLE(including Haruta who's luck had ran out) and then makes Yuji see and experience it all so he can laugh at his misery. Once again, Sukuna is not Yuji's friend. He is not on his side at all. Yuji's suffering and despair brings Sukuna entertainment. Just like how he laughed with Mahito when Junpei was killed in front of Yuji. He is diabolical. And now, Nanami is back. Nearly burnt to a crisp but still walking. Where does his path lead to, I wonder?

Just for you to know, this is an unfinished animation. Mappa’s animators where willing to do something WAYYY better. This is just like 40% of the final product, but for the reasons we all know, they couldn’t.
Yeah, I get people are happy and you can still feel the passion but it's clearly unfinished. Could've been the most historic anime fight of the decade. And you can tell in the reactions people having clear readability issues that effected their hype
Is more like 80% of the animation, bc you have all key frames and almos every inbetween (except for the part where Sukuna is using Fuga, there are missing some in betweens) so, all the big deal is done, they only need some extra time to polish the outlines and the color, but the animation is already there, if only Mappa give their animators human time... and still those animators delivered such amazing animation. Sorry if I have mistakes, I'm still learning the language ;)
Sukuna’s domain basically keeps slashing everything in a 200 meter radius for as long as the domain is active, he has 2 types of slashes: “cleave”, which can be adjusted in proportion to the target’s strength, and he uses it inside of the domain to slash everything with cursed energy (curses, sorcerers, shikigami, humans), the other one is called “dismantle”, its strength is set to an unadjustedable value and he uses it to cut every object with no cursed energy in his domain, so if Gojo or Mei Mei was in the domain they would get hit with cleave, but if a chair or someone like Toji was in it, they would get hit with dismantle. Throughout the fight, Sukuna never used cleave on Makora/Mahoraga, he only used dismantle to cut him up, so he thought that when he opens his domain, Mahoraga will be hit with cleave, an attack that it has not seen yet, and therefore had no chance to adapt to. But Mahoraga was a step ahead, instead of adapting to just dismantle, he adapted to all types of slashes in general, that meant that no slashing attack of any sorts could hurt him, so Sukuna immediately switched tactics and hit Mahoraga with a huge fire arrow (fuga) which is a new attack for Mahoraga, and that killed him. The only way to kill this shikigami is to one shot him with an attack that you haven’t used on him before, because if he survives, the wheel on its head turns and the attack no longer works on him.
And just as a heads up, the narrator said that you can summon the shikigami as many times as you want to subjugate it, this means that Mahoraga isn’t permanently dead. Megumi can still summon him in a subjugation ritual, but if he manages to kill it on his own, it becomes his to control, like he controls Nue or the dogs, and if it dies then, then it’s permanently gone.
In case you missed it. Sukunas "slashes" can target both living things and inanimate objects (its not really there to destroy rocks and the surroundings necessarily, but for people like Toji and maki 1 variant of sukunas slices in his domain can target only humans with some level of CE - not completely 0 like toji and maki. So the 2nd slash variant serves to eliminate them. One is called "Cleave" and the other "dismantle" sadly i cant remember which one is which)

The timing of the OP I think its perfect. The lyrics of the song kinda fits the theme of this arc as well as it kinda like serves as the villains theme here, so basically its like them saying that the villains won here, while showing the MC in devastated state.

Also, in the flash back of ep23, Gojo mentioned it as Megumi's "trump card" 11:28 To put it simple, Others' Domain can only sure-hit objects with cursed energy(ex: human), but Sukuna's Domain can sure-hit(slice) EVERYTHING within it. Sukuna's Domain isn't close unlike others' Domain, so its range is even bigger. 16:15 Yeah!! Season 1 is full of foreshadowings !!

Explaining what the narrator was trying to say in a more simpler way: Sukuna's Domain Expansion: Malovent Shrine Unlike other domain expansions, Sukuna has a barrierless one, meaning "trapped" people can actually just escape from his domain. However this in turn boosts Sukuna's power in the domain expansion as by allowing the person to run away, he can increase the size of his domain up to 200 meters (In this episode, he reduced it to 140 so that Megumi wouldnt be affected). Sukuna's Technique: Cleave = Slices anything with cursed energy Dismantle = Slices anything without cursed energy In his domain expansion, these two are operating at full capacity at the same time Fuga: Open (His fire ability) We dont know too much about it even in the manga so..yeah. (ppl in the comments lmk if ive got anything wrong or missed anything)
Yeah, this comment has everything needed. A domain would usually need a barrier so that the sorcerer can manifest their technique within the barrier space for a guaranteed hit. It really shows how talented Sukuna is to essentially create a barrierless domain. The "escape route" is honestly just technique jargon, as the technique will immediately decimate anyone in the area.
Dismantle (Dissect) can still slash things with cursed energy, but Cleave (Fillet) is more adjustable. It's only during Malevolent Shrine's activation that Dismantle only attacks inanimate objects. Sort of like its auto-targeting. Otherwise I think this is spot on. Sukuna essentially activated a 140-m radius bomb on top of Shibuya.
Sukuna has such deep knowledge of CT and CE he can use other techniques like Jogo fire 🔥by seeing it once....He has many such techniques in his arsenal....he is not restrained to one Technique....although he can't copy some techniques like Limitless or 10 Shadow since they are extremely inclusive to their clans
To add: The narrator mentioned it wasn’t clear if Mahoraga/Makora had adapted to slicing techniques in general or Cleave specifically, but either way it was adapting to Sukunas domain and could only be killed off with a one shot powerful technique
I have two theories about Sukuna's Fire ability: 1. The fire is from a friction caused by his slice curse technique. Somehow when you rubbing your hand it becomes heat right? Some of the reactor also point out this theory. I forgot what channel but I'll edit later. (Edited: the channel is Ragged Pack) 2. Spoiler Warning . . . . The fire is curse energy traits, just like Hakari's CE who feel like sandpaper and edge. Or Kashimo's CE with electricity.
Megumi did know the ramifications of summoning Mahoraga, it's a shikigami (his trump card) that he can use to take his opponent down with him, since he can force them to participate in the ritual to defeat it. He attempted to summon it against Sukuna twice and the finger bearer
10:00 Megumi understands that thing. That's why so many people talk to him about suicide. It would literally come at the cost of his life to use it because he's not strong enough to beat it alone. So his strat was to tie him and an enemy to the curse rule that he can use help to try and beat the Mahoraj. So everytime he made those fists, the enemy would jump back because the could sense the impending death for both them and Megumi. But the rule is when the people trying to subjugate the shinigami die, the shinigami instantly dissipates. So even in season one if Megumi used it, it'd kill two targets, one being Megmui, and then dissipate.
Also megumi knew exactly what it could do that’s why he almost used it on yuji in s1 because he knew Sukuna was that much of a threat. In my opinion, why they played the OP, right at the end was because from what I have heard, the OP was written from the villains perspective, so it was almost like the villains were saying we won while Yuji was mourning. Also from what I’ve heard and seen explained by jogo because it’s based on the fingers yuji consumes, if he does it one at a time yuji can adapt quicker but if he ingests multiple at once it takes him longer to regain control . Remember it’s yujis body but Sukuna is a passenger at the moment until he gets all 20 fingers and can manifest is my understanding.

He know one of the gun in the set is big so he will used it when his life is REALLY REALLY in danger but he didn't know how to used it because he didn't google the instruction.

Feels so bad for every staff members working on this project. The fact that countless freelancer animators or from other big stuidos that consider as real big names on the industry physically and mentally breaking down, some of them basically saying that they might not gonna work with Mappa anymore unless they fix the work environment and scheduling issues. At this point, I just want them to delay the rest of the season until they finish the episodes properly😢
The director of mappa said that the episode was only 30% complete and that they weren’t satisfied with the episode. If that’s 30% and we were all amazed by it I can’t even imagine how it would look completed. Justice for mappa man they can’t keep overworking them like this. I hope they find a resolution soon

Some animators for mappa have said that the episode was only about 30-50% fully finished, the rest wasnt polished, which is incredible with how good the episode was. imagine it completely finished.
Sukuna has two different slashing techniques, cleave and dismantle. One is for things with cursed energy, one is for things without. But mahoraga didnt just adapt to cleave or dismantle, it adapted to *all* forms of slashing attacks. This is why it was able to just walk through malevolent shrine, and why sukuna has to use fire to kill it.
11:31 basically mahoraga’s technique is to adapt a technique of a sorcerer if they are unable to one shot him since sukuna technique is basically just slicing he needs another technique that is not involved in slicing which is fuga but then again fighting mahoraga is very difficult if you don’t have any one shot techniques
So Ange is remembering when Sukuna took over Yujis body the first time when he ripped his heart out. Megumi does start to say the chant to summon Mahoraga
Megumi's 10 shadows technique requires that he "subjugate" each shadow before he is allowed to summon it regularly, so he must beat it in a fight. He explains that he can have other people help him but it is generally pointless since it will not count for subjugating it. As Gojo explained, a previous zenin clan head killed both someone with Gojo's powers and themselves by summoning Makora for subjugation. As Ange pointed out, Megumi has attempted to summon this several times as a suicide attack, notably in the fight where he first used his domain expansion before changing his mind. This was also brought up after the baseball episode, Gojo when training Megumi says that he is handicapping himself because he believes he can solve everything with that suicide attack, instead of trying become stronger (and potentially subjugating it himself).

Sukuna was not involved in the ritual, it was ponytail bitch and megumi. The only way for mahagora/ the ritual to end would be for mahagora to be exorcised or for both megumi and ponytail bitch to die.
Absolutely stunning episode! Props to the animators who can pull smth like this off under such strict conditions, truly talanted people! Also, to explain what the narrator said about Sukunas domain, basically most of the domains need to be enclosed in a barrier, even Gojos domain firstly creates an enclosed barrier which is imbued with his cursed technique. But in Sukunas case, he does it differently, and simply creates his domain in an open space without a barrier, to make it more simple it's like he draws a picture in the air without a canvas. And also because of the pact that allows others to technically "escape" his domain as it's not entrapping others in a barrier, it vastly increases it's guaranteed hit effect up to 200 meters. Sukuna is just built different what can i say😂

Megumi ALSO almost used it in episode 23 (or 24). Vs the special grade in the cave. He started to recite the sacred treasure line. (And the special grade curse freaked out) Then he remembered a talk with Gojo about not sacriricing yourself, and instead swinging for the fences. So he did his domain instead.

Where you remember him saying that was when the trio went to go confirm the deaths at the juvenile center, and then it turned out to be a special grade curse born of sukuna's finger. Then Sukuna came out because they needed him to defeat the special grade. He did that, then went outside, ripped out yuji's heart and then beat up Megumi to the point where he was ready to give up. That's when he said that Sacred swing ring line, but before he could use it, Yuji took over the body again and then 'died'.
Nah, Sukuna won.
11:40 to explain that situation, Mahoragas ability is to adapt to things, he does this gradually as his wheel turns. Sukuna so far had been hitting Maho with one of his slashing techniques "dismantle", so he thought Maho had only adapted to "dismantle" alone. So Sukuna decided to bring out his domain, which would pelt Maho with both "dismantle" and a new type of slash "cleave" and figured it would kill Maho before a new adaption, however he misunderstood, Maho didnt just adapt to "dismantle" but the concept of "slashes" as a whole. This finally prompted Sukuna to use his fire arrow to finish Maho off with something he knew 100% had not been adapted to. Hope that wasnt too long...

Mahoraga was just walking inside Sukuna’s domain. Proves how much of a monster that divine general is. Animators did an amazing job.
And his walk was animated on 1. Meaning that he moves every frame, and we have 24 frames per second. So for around 5 seconds it required 24 drawings for 1 second. 24*5=220 frames were drawn.
well he was already (almost) adapted the slash technique in general thats why mahoraga was able to tank that onslaught

Sure you can agree that the beat is a bit too upbringing, and I agree on that, but it just fits so perfectly in with what just happened.
You can also make the argument that they could've played it after Yuji's breakdown so we could hear Junya Enoki's voice acting at full swing, but maybe we'll get a reanimation of it next ep (If it manages to come out on time.) [God rest the animator's souls] To this point, I also agree, but I still love it non-the-less, and it doesn't take anything away from the episode, it was still amazing.
Good catch about Megumi. He was about to summon this beast MULTIPLE times throughout Season 1, actually. Basically, every time he felt like he was going to lose, he tried to cast this. It's why his domain expansion moment and the flashback with gojo was so important, so you should maybe give his domain expansion episode (I think it was 23) a rewatch. The fact that Megumi always had this shikigami in the back of his mind, and viewed it as a guaranteed win card via suicide, meant that he was limiting his own growth because he knew he can't technically LOSE a fight. He didn't view death as a loss, and that's what Gojo corrected him on. The exact quote was something along the lines of "Risking death to win and dying to win are two different things."
Some (I'm not sure if it's all, since this is just off the top of my head) of the times he was about to summon this beast in season 1 are:
-The second episode, as you pointed out. Gojo stops him.
-Again against Sukuna in episode... 5, I believe. This time he gets stopped by Yuji, who sacrifices himself to stop Sukuna. This is where Sukuna became interested in Megumi, and is the time he was referring to in this episode when he said that Megumi could have beaten him if he had summoned it "back then."
-Against Hanami, but Inumaki stops him.
-Again against Hanami, but Todo stops him.
-Lastly, the aforementioned Megumi domain expansion episode (23 I think), where he for the first time is the one to stop himself. He decides to take Gojo's advice and give winning a shot himself instead of relying on his suicide trump card, and pulls off domain expansion for the first time.
As for the line he says before casting it, it was used in the fight against Sukuna and in the domain expansion episode.

Summoning Mahoragi would kill him and everyone around him, so it wouldn't make much sense considering Todo was more having fun than wanting to seriously hurt him/ kill him

Alright, here's the paragraph to explain Sukuna's domain expansion, Malevolent -Kitchen- Shrine. From what we see from different type of domain before, it's a separate space with it's own landscape within an enclosed barrier. We see how the barrier/domain look on the outside when Gojo is fighting Jogo the first time, and when Mahito firstly activate it. They're usually just a black circle.
But Sukuna's domain do not have that same enclosed space. Just like how they explained it, "painting into the air without canvas", the full effect of the domain with it's sure-hit guaranteed are effective right throughout the surrounding without forming a domain as the rest did. So there's no space ambience that Gojo has, no arms hell of Mahito, and no Dagon's beach landscape.
And now you would think that if Sukuna didn't enclosed his domain, surely the enemy can easily escape his domain right? Unfortunately my friend, the binding vow made that allow the enemy to escape make Sukuna able to expand the range of his domain up until 200 meter/656 feet. Imagine yourself sprinting through that distance. How far will you make until you're hit by one of Sukuna's slashing technique that are guaranteed to hit you.
In simple terms: sukuna is the chef, his domain the kitchen, and his opponents are the ingredients to be cut and burn . you free to run for your life if you can.

If anyone deserves the credit for not just this episode but JJK as a whole, it's the animators. For those who don't know, shortly before this episode aired quite a few animators of MAAPA, the studio behind this show, basically had mental breakdowns due to just how horrible it is to work for the studio and how critical fans have been of their JJK work. It's gotten to a point where the continuation of JJK after Season 2 has been called into question because of how overworked these people have been.
Why not give credit to the animators of every other show then? When it comes to mappa shows, its credit to animators but when its other shows, u show credit to the studio? Double standards lmao

JJK s2's director gave animators 100% freedom so every fight looks different, they have different artstyles and insanely creative storyboards, and they go "off model" and become less detail to give us more movements. Something Naruto used to do back in the day. So this ds-jjk comparison is not fair.

NON SPOILER EXPLANATION Megumi has crazy potential. We learned that someone with his technique tied with someone with gojos technique in the past. Meaning megumi can at least be equal to Gojo one day. Also we learn that mahoraga can adapt to any attack no matter what. Mahoraga was even adapting to sukuna domain which is why he had to switch to the fire arrow. If mahoraga adapts to all of your attacks you will loose. Megumi has the most potential and Gojo and Sukuna know it.

Megumi's technique works like this: you summon a shikigami, you defeat it, and now it's under your control. Since Mahoraga has never actually been subjugated, he can still summon it as many times as he wants in an "attempt" to subjugate it. This time, he summoned it in front of blonde dude to make him a part of the subjugation ritual. As such, even if Mahoraga was defeated, he wouldn't be under Megumi's control, but the blonde guy was still obligated to fight him.
Animators said this episode was only 30% finished. Don't wanna know what it would look like if it was 100% finished.

That was most likely hyperbolic. That said, plenty of animators said multiple times over the past week that this episode wasn't even finished, and wouldn't be. The rest of the season is gonna be bad, because production has all but thrown itself off a cliff at this point with how hard the MAPPA execs have been working their animators into the ground.
Here's hoping none of the animators die trying to make the rest of the season look anything more than half decent.

About the domains, remember how each time anyone used one, from outside it looked like a sphere with the domain being inside that spherical barrier? Sukuna doesn't give a damn, and can unleash his domain in the real world, "painting on air". Because there is no barrier, technically you could run away, but because of that his range is much greater.
I don't think anyone has done that before, except for Megumi, but he used enclosed spaces in which he used Chimera Shadow Garden, his domain. (end of S1, fight with Dagon, and REDACTED)

The end of S1 when Megumi used DE was also technically inside of the 1 finger curse’s domain, he’s basically only used CSG inside of other domains.

A simple explanation into Sukuna's abilities in this ep
His main CT involves slashing in general and comprises of 2 types (his fire arrow is still a mystery today)
1)Dismantle- A normal but powerful slash
2)Cleave-A slash that can adjust to the target's cursed energy levels so as to cut them down in one fell swoop
Now his domain, Malevolent Shrine, is considered a divine feat in JJK. The reason why is because his domain does not have a barrier whatsoever, which means he can't trap his opponent inside his domain. Its basically the same as using a software but without any hardware. However in return for allowing an escape route for his opponent, his domain's range is greatly increased to a 200 meter radius. This is the pact that was formed. And in his domain, Dismantle will destroy any inanimate object while Cleave destroys anything with cursed energy. This will continue endlessly until his opponent is completely annihilated.

This moment was foreshadowed many times in season 1:
- first time for sure was when megumi fought sukuna (that made sukuna actually get interested in megumi
- second time was during megumi-maki fight against Hanami
- third time was during the fight against the special grade, just before deciding to try to use the domani expansion
Basically, Mahoraga has been Megumi’s trump card since the beginning. He was ready to sacrifice himself using it and destroying whatever the enemy was.

The OST when Sukuna opened his domain is absolutely stellar. It's so eerie and has this mythical sound to it, like in some traditional south east asian music it fits the theme of Sukuna being this almost demonic evil entity.
Megumi did understand the power of this creature, and he knows it has never been subjugated, he has not subjugated it himself. He summoned it not because Shigemo is wuch a tough oponent, but since he thought he was dying and he was going to bleed out. He was sacrificing himself by bringing Shigemo into the subjugation ritual. The moment both of them died the creature disappeared, so he wasn't unleashing it on the town. The main problem was that Sukuna saved him, so the ritual didn't close and the whole chunk of the city got destroyed in a lot of people died.
Respect to the animators. I really hope the anime goes on hiatus from the next ep cos the animators need time and rest.

I'm not sure if anyone already explained this but about Megumi's intention when he summoned Mahoraga: since Megumi included another person in the subjugulation ritual - as he was about to do in previous situations in S1 - the ritual would have been ended - meaning Mahoraga will go back to where it came from - once two of them involved in the ritual are dead. That is why Sukuna decided to get involved, keep the pony tail guy alive, and fight Mahoraga as an outsider of the ritual. (He actually explain this before step into the fight.) Yes, Megumi knew he was about to summon the powerful beast that he can't control but he would have thought the situation will be solved quickly as he dragged Haruta(ponytail) into the ritual which is why he kept walked while bleeding, so that they can move to the empty and big space that would bring minimum destruction I imagine. He would have never imagined Sukuna will come and fight that thing.

Megumi try to use this in ep 1 against Sukuna, ep 5 against Sukuna 3 fingers ( that time he said "Sacred Treasure" lines), against Hanami but Inumaki stopped he, against Hanami (in the same ep) but Todo and Yuji stopped he and in ep 23 but he changed he change his mind and give up to sacrifice himself to risks death( when he go crazy and make his first domain expansion)( that time he said the "Sacred Treasure" lines again)
At the beginning, Megumi only summoned Mahoraga to fight Haruta (since he was about to die either way), afterwards it would have disappeared since the subjugation ritual would have failed (btw Megumi's VA is saying Makora which is another reading for it's name, so either works).
The only reason the fight kept going is because Sukuna intervened and attacked it as an outsider.
Also the reason they played the OP at the end during Yuji's breakdown is because the lyrics of the song are sung from the Villains PoV (in this case Sukuna's PoV) thus mocking Yuji for his way of life and his current state (similar to how he mocked Yuji after Junpei died).
It's a shame the translators couldn't include a translation for English speakers but it's easy enough to find if you're interested.
Sukunas domain expansion doesn't trap the opponent, it leaves the domain open for up to 200 meters and it sends every single one of his attacks millions of times within those 200 m, so the entire city, the people, and the shikigami are getting sliced and diced, but since it recovers from the cuts before it can recover, Sukuna attacks it with his fire arrow.
I love how this episode makes some of the scenes look almost dream-like and that just enhances how horrible and terrifying it is
MAPPA Animator is the real MVP. Giving justice to the Manga, hope they will have a Better situation in the near Future.

We saw multiple times in S1 that Megumi was about to unleash something powerful and throw his life away. But it's so funny that when it FINALLY gets used, it's against Haruta of all people. Mahoraga. Sukuna shows up and has fun for a bit but unlike with Jogo, he realizes that having fun won't be enough for this thing. If it adapts to all of his moves, there won't be a path to victory. So he has to take it out in one blow. Then he demolishes most of the city, annihilates SO MANY PEOPLE(including Haruta who's luck had ran out) and then makes Yuji see and experience it all so he can laugh at his misery. Once again, Sukuna is not Yuji's friend. He is not on his side at all. Yuji's suffering and despair brings Sukuna entertainment. Just like how he laughed with Mahito when Junpei was killed in front of Yuji. He is diabolical. And now, Nanami is back. Nearly burnt to a crisp but still walking. Where does his path lead to, I wonder?

Is more like 80% of the animation, bc you have all key frames and almos every inbetween (except for the part where Sukuna is using Fuga, there are missing some in betweens) so, all the big deal is done, they only need some extra time to polish the outlines and the color, but the animation is already there, if only Mappa give their animators human time... and still those animators delivered such amazing animation. Sorry if I have mistakes, I'm still learning the language ;)
They played the opening because that song celebrates chaos and Sukuna is happy seeing Itadori like that
Sukuna’s domain basically keeps slashing everything in a 200 meter radius for as long as the domain is active, he has 2 types of slashes: “cleave”, which can be adjusted in proportion to the target’s strength, and he uses it inside of the domain to slash everything with cursed energy (curses, sorcerers, shikigami, humans), the other one is called “dismantle”, its strength is set to an unadjustedable value and he uses it to cut every object with no cursed energy in his domain, so if Gojo or Mei Mei was in the domain they would get hit with cleave, but if a chair or someone like Toji was in it, they would get hit with dismantle. Throughout the fight, Sukuna never used cleave on Makora/Mahoraga, he only used dismantle to cut him up, so he thought that when he opens his domain, Mahoraga will be hit with cleave, an attack that it has not seen yet, and therefore had no chance to adapt to. But Mahoraga was a step ahead, instead of adapting to just dismantle, he adapted to all types of slashes in general, that meant that no slashing attack of any sorts could hurt him, so Sukuna immediately switched tactics and hit Mahoraga with a huge fire arrow (fuga) which is a new attack for Mahoraga, and that killed him. The only way to kill this shikigami is to one shot him with an attack that you haven’t used on him before, because if he survives, the wheel on its head turns and the attack no longer works on him.

And just as a heads up, the narrator said that you can summon the shikigami as many times as you want to subjugate it, this means that Mahoraga isn’t permanently dead. Megumi can still summon him in a subjugation ritual, but if he manages to kill it on his own, it becomes his to control, like he controls Nue or the dogs, and if it dies then, then it’s permanently gone.

Sukunas "slashes" can target both living things and inanimate objects (its not really there to destroy rocks and the surroundings necessarily, but for people like Toji and maki 1 variant of sukunas slices in his domain can target only humans with some level of CE - not completely 0 like toji and maki. So the 2nd slash variant serves to eliminate them. One is called "Cleave" and the other "dismantle" sadly i cant remember which one is which)

Sukuna's Domain Expansion: Malovent Shrine
Unlike other domain expansions, Sukuna has a barrierless one, meaning "trapped" people can actually just escape from his domain. However this in turn boosts Sukuna's power in the domain expansion as by allowing the person to run away, he can increase the size of his domain up to 200 meters (In this episode, he reduced it to 140 so that Megumi wouldnt be affected).
Sukuna's Technique:
Cleave = Slices anything with cursed energy
Dismantle = Slices anything without cursed energy
In his domain expansion, these two are operating at full capacity at the same time
Fuga: Open (His fire ability)
We dont know too much about it even in the manga so..yeah.

Yeah, this comment has everything needed. A domain would usually need a barrier so that the sorcerer can manifest their technique within the barrier space for a guaranteed hit. It really shows how talented Sukuna is to essentially create a barrierless domain. The "escape route" is honestly just technique jargon, as the technique will immediately decimate anyone in the area.
Dismantle (Dissect) can still slash things with cursed energy, but Cleave (Fillet) is more adjustable. It's only during Malevolent Shrine's activation that Dismantle only attacks inanimate objects. Sort of like its auto-targeting.
Otherwise I think this is spot on. Sukuna essentially activated a 140-m radius bomb on top of Shibuya.
Sukuna has such deep knowledge of CT and CE he can use other techniques like Jogo fire 🔥by seeing it once....He has many such techniques in his arsenal....he is not restrained to one Technique....although he can't copy some techniques like Limitless or 10 Shadow since they are extremely inclusive to their clans
To add: The narrator mentioned it wasn’t clear if Mahoraga/Makora had adapted to slicing techniques in general or Cleave specifically, but either way it was adapting to Sukunas domain and could only be killed off with a one shot powerful technique
I have two theories about Sukuna's Fire ability:
1. The fire is from a friction caused by his slice curse technique. Somehow when you rubbing your hand it becomes heat right?

10:00 Megumi understands that thing. That's why so many people talk to him about suicide. It would literally come at the cost of his life to use it because he's not strong enough to beat it alone. So his strat was to tie him and an enemy to the curse rule that he can use help to try and beat the Mahoraj. So everytime he made those fists, the enemy would jump back because the could sense the impending death for both them and Megumi. But the rule is when the people trying to subjugate the shinigami die, the shinigami instantly dissipates. So even in season one if Megumi used it, it'd kill two targets, one being Megmui, and then dissipate.
Also megumi knew exactly what it could do that’s why he almost used it on yuji in s1 because he knew Sukuna was that much of a threat. In my opinion, why they played the OP, right at the end was because from what I have heard, the OP was written from the villains perspective, so it was almost like the villains were saying we won while Yuji was mourning. Also from what I’ve heard and seen explained by jogo because it’s based on the fingers yuji consumes, if he does it one at a time yuji can adapt quicker but if he ingests multiple at once it takes him longer to regain control . Remember it’s yujis body but Sukuna is a passenger at the moment until he gets all 20 fingers and can manifest is my understanding.

Megumi's 10 shadows technique requires that he "subjugate" each shadow before he is allowed to summon it regularly, so he must beat it in a fight. He explains that he can have other people help him but it is generally pointless since it will not count for subjugating it. As Gojo explained, a previous zenin clan head killed both someone with Gojo's powers and themselves by summoning Makora for subjugation. As Ange pointed out, Megumi has attempted to summon this several times as a suicide attack, notably in the fight where he first used his domain expansion before changing his mind. This was also brought up after the baseball episode, Gojo when training Megumi says that he is handicapping himself because he believes he can solve everything with that suicide attack, instead of trying become stronger (and potentially subjugating it himself).

Sukuna was not involved in the ritual, it was ponytail bitch and megumi. The only way for mahagora/ the ritual to end would be for mahagora to be exorcised or for both megumi and ponytail bitch to die.

Also, to explain what the narrator said about Sukunas domain, basically most of the domains need to be enclosed in a barrier, even Gojos domain firstly creates an enclosed barrier which is imbued with his cursed technique. But in Sukunas case, he does it differently, and simply creates his domain in an open space without a barrier, to make it more simple it's like he draws a picture in the air without a canvas. And also because of the pact that allows others to technically "escape" his domain as it's not entrapping others in a barrier, it vastly increases it's guaranteed hit effect up to 200 meters. Sukuna is just built different what can i say😂

Megumi ALSO almost used it in episode 23 (or 24). Vs the special grade in the cave. He started to recite the sacred treasure line. (And the special grade curse freaked out)
Then he remembered a talk with Gojo about not sacriricing yourself, and instead swinging for the fences. So he did his domain instead.
