I thought that 144hz monitors were overrated and that they couldnt be that much better than 60hz so i bought one and when i started using it, i told myself "damn theres not much difference at all" and then someday after a couple of weeks of use i randomly surfed through some settings and i came across "monitor resfresh rate" and it was set at 60..
So i used a 144hz monitor set at 60hz for a couple of weeks lmfao. when i turned it to 144 the difference is like a night and day, i couldnt go back to 60hz, no way

Geometrican the thing is we don't play in slow motion any videogame, so the benefits are non existent in more than 60hz
*EDIT* : you guys are correct no need to reply to this comment,i did not know
Also what i meant to say is that 240hz versus for example 120 or 144hz wont make much of a big deal if you dont have both monitors next to each other to notice the difference,of course.
Thats all have a nice day =D.

Jhin a blooming Flower you can definitely tell the difference between different displays when youre playing, after 144hz we dont see so much difference clearly, and bigger than 240hz would probably be pointless, mayby it doesnt affect to league of legends so much but to other games like fps it will make a huge difference

It cant, that doesnt mean 60 fps onscreen means 60 frames the eye comprehends, that means a fraction of that is intersection, of 60 frames you probably perceive like 30, so with 60 frames refresh rate you should normally be at your max, 60+ is only glorification. you can show ppl 100 fps and 200 fps videos and 30% of them will even recognize a difference after close looking.

    Full hz breakdown:
I will denote something I am coining 'frames per reaction', which is the number of frames you will see before you process and execute a given action assuming an average reaction time of 250 ms (as studies show this to be the average reaction time of a human, and some online testing shows that average gamers are anywhere from 190 to 300 ms per reaction). The different hz rates will also be listed in accordance with this.
Note: I omitted 75 hz because very few games and gamers use it at all; however, 75 hz would be the cut-off point for most gaming because that's about how long it takes the human brain to process an entire image according to MIT testing (13.3 milliseconds). This is most likely where the myth came from that the human brain is capped at 60 hz (hence why 60 hz has been the standard for decades). In theory, that means you cannot actively use post-75 hz, though post-75 hz is still useful because video games deal in real-time rendering of many continuous frames/images, not just one image (I will mention the upper-limit of this, as well). (165 hz also exists, and Sony spoke of running some games at 90 at 4k on PS5 for smoother gameplay compared to 120.)
30 hz = 33.3 milliseconds for frame-generation (playable for typical gaming at non-pro level, but bad for pros/first-person shooters, and not ideal for simracing). 7.5 frames per reaction.
60 hz = 16.6 ms (good for all gaming, other than pros/first-person shooters). 15 frames per reaction.
120 hz = 8.3 ms (cut-off point for pro-gaming and simracing, etc.). 30 frames per reaction.
144 hz = 6.9 ms (slightly better than 120 hz). 36 frames per reaction.
240 hz = 4.1 ms (max pro-level first-person shooter gaming, and not much improvement for other gaming -- and massive cost/hardware drain). 61 frames per reaction.
360 hz = 2.7 ms (cutting-edge monitor hz as of 2021, but not really playable yet. Only slightly better than 240 hz, and not worth it for non-pros or normal games). 92 frames per reaction.
720 hz = 1.3 ms (may exist by 2024 or so, as we will already see 480 hz monitors by 2022-2023). 192 frames per reaction.
1000 hz = 1 ms (may be the upper-limit. I saw a report claiming that 1000 hz monitors will exist by 2025). 250 frames per reaction (perfect 1:1 mapping of frames per millisecond of reaction time, with post-1000 hz being sub-1 ms frame-generation, which is most likely useless, since the brain cannot process faster than 1 ms at all). (I will also add the upper-limit of the brain is 1000 FPS (since this is the limit at which your myelinated nerves can fire), but subjects can really only process to 200 FPS, which is akin to real-life motion, according to some experts.)

I read that experts claim around 250 hz is akin to real-life motion, which tells me ALL post-240 hz will be smooth even at slow-motion. That means, all post-240 offer very MINOR improvement to gameplay, as some test subjects already report on the 360 hz gaming monitor. The frame-to-frame times prove this, as well. Of course, in reality, 120 hz is very smooth in real-time, and is more than good enough for non-pro simracing, and even non-pro first-person shooters. The cut-off point is about 120 hz as this is about 8 ms frame-to-frame, which is deemed the ideal range for response time (hence why all modern monitors and TVs are anywhere from 1 to 8 ms rt), since it's difficult for the brain to even process an image faster than this (MIT testing showed that a human brain can process an entire image in 13.3 ms (equal to 75 hz)). It also creates smoothness and removes 'ghosting'. The biggest advantage to higher hz is not time, but smoothness (though there is also a big time advantage comparing 60 to 240 hz). But, 60 to 120 hz is fairly minor, as is 144 to 240 hz. 30 to 60 hz is a larger jump, as it happens. Some testing shows that 60 to 144 hz saves 1.2 second on lap time (which equates to 9.7 ms more time frame-to-frame and 21 extra frames, which is not a massive jump, but is notable and large).
    Context:
An 8-hour test from the website, Overtake, reported that Joe (the editor) saw some minor racing improvements and saved 1.2 seconds off his lap from 60 to 144 hz (a fair difference of 9.7 milliseconds). We can roughly break that logic down (if we take Joe, the editor, as a rough gauge, and his 8-hour test as decent sampling. This was on ACC):
*Assuming around 1 millisecond saves 0.2 seconds on lap time from Joe's baseline lap. (I also added the additional frames per reaction for each comparison.) Bold show the common jumps, so you can easily compare them. Fewer extra frames at lower hz jumps makes more difference than many extra frames at higher hz jumps (even if they are larger jumps). Very much worth keeping in mind in the context of 120 to 240, and future hz.
30 to 360 hz would save 5.5 s on lap time (30.6 ms of difference). 84.5 extra FPR [additional frames per reaction at 250 ms per reaction].
30 to 240 hz would save 5.2 s on lap time (29.2 ms of difference). 53.5 extra FPR.
30 to 144 hz would save 4.7 s on lap time (26.4 ms of difference). 28.5 extra FPR.
30 to 120 hz would save 4.4 s on lap time (25 ms of difference). 22.5 extra FPR.
30 to 60 hz would save 2.8 s on lap time (16.7 ms of difference). 7.5 extra FPR.
60 to 360 hz would save 2.1 s on lap time (13.9 ms of difference). 77 extra FPR.
60 to 240 hz would save 1.8 s on lap time (12.5 ms of difference). 46 extra FPR.
*60 to 144 hz saved Joe 1.2 s on lap time (9.7 ms of difference). 21 extra FPR.
60 to 120 hz would save 1 s on lap time (8.3 ms of difference). 15 extra FPR.
120 to 360 hz would save 1.1 s on lap time (5.6 ms of difference). 62 extra FPR.
144 to 360 hz would save 0.8 s on lap time (4.2 ms of difference). 56 extra FPR.
120 to 240 hz would save 0.8 s on lap time (4.2 ms of difference). 31 extra FPR.
144 to 240 hz would save 0.5 s on lap time (2.8 ms of difference). 25 extra FPR.
240 to 360 hz would save 0.3 s on lap time (1.4 ms of difference). 31 extra FPR.
120 to 144 hz would save 0.3 s on lap time (1.4 ms of difference). 6 extra FPR.

Competitive gamers often do care. I remember playing at LAN parties in the early 2000's and fast CRTs were the thing. You could put some of them up to 150hz, but at only 1024x768. For the time, that was a good resolution, considering how slow GPUs were. Back then, there were a lot of people repeating the meme that you can't see more than X frames per second or that it was just a superficial thing, not affecting pleasure or gamer performance. Now it's no uphill battle to convince most people of the value of it. It amazed me how long it took for manufacturers to increase the refresh rate of LCDs considering the value that competitive gamers get from faster refresh rates.

    • @MsHojat
      @MsHojat 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Because real-life fluidity requires a whole lot more straightforward GPU power than to make it look prettier. That, plus for the longest time LCD tech just wasn't available to do it. The transition from CRT to LCD took a very long time. Even now CRTs have some advantages over LCD, although they've finally lost out on resolution ever since the 4k monitors came out.
I feel like if some companies kept investing in CRT we'd have some pretty awesome monitors to compete with LCDs. Problem is they're more polluting, hard to ship, and potentially more expensive.

but i doubt many people will go for 240 hz. i think 2k with 120hz >>> 1080p with 240hz (i think nearly same hardware is needed to play on these settings)
in the near future i cant imaginge there will be more 240hz monitors. perhaps when everybody has 4k monitor at home they start going for over 144/165 hz
(dunno if this will be in 5 years)
if my computer would run it i would prefer 4k with 120hz to 2k with 240hz too...
ps i think in WoW (or games like that) even a 4k 60hz will be far superior to a 1080p 240hz.
pps console nubs say 20-30 hz are more than enough :P

240Hz display also allows each frame to be rendered and showed on screen for each 4 milliseconds, while it takes 16.6 milliseconds for each frame if the refresh rate is 60Hz. Generally speaking, the images shown on a 240Hz screen will "stick to" your inputs much closer than what a 60Hz screen can achieve, which eventually means much lower input lag.

    • @HarryLin
      @HarryLin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

16ms of lag is definitely perceivable if your game is intense. I play a game called OSU(check out some videos if you've never heard of it), it's a very intense rhythm game which requires you to move your mouse non-stop and change direction like 5 times per second. We will usually unlock the fps to let it go above 1000fps so that the render time is reduced to less than 1ms. The game is not playable if you lock it to 60fps, because the cursor is not responsive enough after the 16ms lag caused by the limited frame rate.

If manufacturers would start putting in the research to make 240hz a standard, it is possible.
But instead, they wanted 4k, which is only because it's easy to market.
In a alternate reality where all monitors came standard at 240hz, then one year all of sudden they dropped it to 60 everybody and their dog would notice. I guess 60hz is so associated with that "computery feel" that people are scared to move outside that field of refresh rate.
In this alternate reality, we are still using CRT displays, which have 0ms input lag even on the absolute shittiest ones, beautiful colors, a perfect contrast ratio and theoretically, have a limitless refresh rate provided the way the technology works. Actually if flat screens were never made, 240hz would probably be a refresh rate laughed at by the PC Master Race who would be using 600hz displays at 1024x768.
As humans we have trained our brains what to expect from motion, 60 is pretty sad.

Everything is still good at 135 FPS, but as soon as it drops to 120 FPS, I immediately sense a difference - the game doesn't feel as smooth and noticeably worse. Has anyone else experienced this "issue," or is it possibly just my sensitivity? For fast-paced games like Warzone, I find 80 FPS almost unplayable. TV has high input lag. There is also high ghosting factor. So if you see continous line instead of mustiple mouse pointers, your display is ghosting a lot. Or you have stroboscopic backlight which is not good for eyes.

Those with a 4K monitor and many others at 720p/900p/1080p/1440p. 60 is great and even 48/50 is. 75/100/144/240 are great too. Thomas Edison once said that 46 frames per second was the minimum needed for the eye to perceive motion: "Anything less will strain the eye."

I don't. 144hz all the way. I realized the importance of it right away, so I just saved up a little bit longer and used my TV for a monitor until I could pick up something nice. Then I found a 60hz monitor on craigslist for $20. Now I use my TV, 60hz and 144hz off the back of my 1080 Ti and have lots of real estate for various things. If I just want to play a game like The Witcher 3, sometimes I'll just play it over 4K with an HDMI 2.0 cable at 60FPS, but if I'm playing a game that I want to compete in - that's when I'll always use my smaller 1080p 144hz xl2411. Before I knew about HDMI 2.0, I was getting only 30FPS, and it was really making me sick. That's how I found out about HDMI 2.0, because I was like, "Wow. This is crazy. I can't be the only one." did a Google search, and found some MVP that hooked me up with that knowledge. Honestly, I'd love to have a 240hz monitor, but it's hard to justify the price of some of the good ones with how much of diminishing return it is after 144hz.
