The composer's of the song were unsure, whether John could do it justice; after they recorded the song, all their worries were blown into oblivion. Now, no one can sing the song, the way John does; any covers will be inferior. I hope you caught that John tossed the microphone stand into the air, before catching and throwing it across the stage; John foot pick up of the stand is also classic.

"You're The Voice" was composed by British songwriters Chris Thompson, Andy Qunta and Maggie Ryder in response to an anti-nuclear demonstration in London's Hyde Park in 1985. John released the song in September 1986, it took off, it has become Australian's "other "national anthem.

Do you know if the writers ever performed the song themselves?

John didn't write this, however he did add a lot of different elements like 'The Bagpipe' and also changed the key it was sung in....He went to Germany where the crowd of over 100 thousand refused to let him off stage. If you can find that video you will see the absolute love and appreciation on John's face.... I think it went to number one in at least 5 different countries world wide. So many more awesome performances from this concert....you should check out...one I'd also recommend from this concert is "It's a long way to the top" an AC/DC cover...but again John makes it his own. Love your channel sir. Hi from Australia

Written as a protest song against nuclear weapons pointing from USSR to the UK etc.

It’s John’s song even that he wasn’t the songwriter John was the first artist to do a professional recording which wasn’t a demo recording.
John Farnham released You’re The Voice October 1986 just after 4 years paying his rock & roll dues in the once highly successful Australian supergroup the Little River Band ( LRB ) .
You’re The Voice recharged John’s beyond anyone’s imagination because John before You’re The Voice was regarded as a wash-up has been .
John with this song proved all his critics totally wrong .
You’re The Voice had some hurdles with John recording it . The main songwriter Chris Thompson only knew John as a novelty pop singer of the late 60’s and 70’s that wasn’t taken seriously musically . So Chris Thompson said a strong No for John recording the song concert.
John himself ended up ringing Chris Thompson to explain he will send him the finish recording and then he can make up his mind that the song should be released or not . Well Chris was blown away . Chris Thompson went on co write many other songs for John after .
You’re The Voice was massive number 1 hit in Australia for 6 weeks plus number 1 in many European countries top 10 in the UK and New Zealand top 20 in Canada but sadly wasn’t a hit in USA due to record company mismanagement .
The album which You’re The Voice is the main single on Whispering Jack 1986 become the most successful album in Australia domestically by an Australian artist . It also was first album in Australia to sell over a million copies .

This is John' signature song and where his moniker, 'The Voice' is derived. The composers wrote it as a song against nuclear armament, but it has come to be known also as a war-song against silence in the face of evil and fear, and to empower people to action. This is another of the message songs from John spreading loving and wise ideas for the greater good in the world. John's microphone and stand tricks should be watched out for. There is a book written about his career by Jane Gazzo entitled, 'John Farnham the untold story,' and a film produced about him named, 'Finding The Voice'.

I love the bit at 6:07 where the backup singers have to hold the note the same length as him, so Farnsey holds it as long as he can. He's a rascal.
    Makes me smile every time.

Another great reaction, thank you :) I always love seeing your excitement. This song was written by somebody else, but it was never recorded. When John heard a demo of it, he just had to have it and it was part of his come back after struggling for many years with trying to get radio stations to play his music and playing at small venues. The writers of the song said no to him having it because of John's "teenage pop" reputation. John recorded it regardless (in 1996) and this and the rest of the album “Whispering Jack” relaunched his career. He has always been an amazing performer. He just loves being on the stage and singing. He has the most wonderful personality. He is very humble and always acknowledges his band, back up singers, the audience and peers with love and respect.

No it's not a cover. It was written by others but John is the original artist to perform it, and made it famous around the world. It was a big hit in Europe as well as Australia. Back in those days, a lot of people wrote music but did not record it themselves and put the songs out to the industry hoping that artists would pick them to record. At first the songwriters were not keen for John to record the song as his career was going through a lul. He was known as a teen pop idol and the writers didn't think he could do the song Justice. But once they heard his recording they knew that it would be huge and it was. It is one of the most iconic song ever released .

Rewatch it again. Just before John throws away the mike stand, he has actually thrown it up in the air and caught it.
Also Celine Dion, and Coldplay have tried doing this song at their concerts

Thanks for another great reaction to our lovely John!
Definitely John's song :) Not written by him, but the lead single off his comeback album in 1986 - this is the song (and the album it's off) that made him a phenomenon in Australia after he had been struggling for so many years. It was very big in parts of Europe at the time as well. This is a song that everyone in Australia knows the words to, even now, close to 40 years after it was released!

I meant to tell you to watch his mic stand 30' high spin and catch before he threw it. Its at about 3:40. John is so well known for mic and mic stand tricks without losing a note or a beat. Before cordless mics he used to do lassoo tricks with them LOL!!
Hes a comedian too and loves having fun with everyone. Check him out in Blow by Blow in same concert playing the Maestro ❤😂🎉

The song was recorded by John Farnham in 1986. Written by three British songwriters. In the United States, the song is perhaps best known for a charting version issued in 1991 by the band Heart. It was also recorded by the Alan Parsons band, featuring Chris Thompson on vocals, and performed by them at the World Liberty Concert in the Netherlands in May 1995. It climbed the charts in Australia again in 2012 after being used in a TV advert. (Wyki)

In the same concert. Listen to johns cover of an AC/DC song “ it’s a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll’
And watch not just the band but the orchestra rock too. It was one of the last songs in the concert. Brilliant
    Love you John 💕
Also another beautiful Australian singer. Delta Goodram. Does a cover of Johns your the voice. Different and very classy.
Very worth a listen to. 🙂

I hate stupid adds too. Yes, it is John's song. He didn't write it but it was his version that you heard over the radio. It was a huge hit in many countries, particularly in European countries, the British Isles and Canada. The writers didn't want John to record it because of his pop background but he did anyway and I'm sure they are glad he did because they would have made bucket loads of money off this. There gave been quite a few covers done but IMO nothing matches John's version.
