  • I was fortunate enough to spend a week solo hunting mountain goats in the mountains of northwestern BC. I tried to capture the story as best I could. I hope you enjoy it. As always, if you have any questions or comments please don't hesitate to get in touch or drop them below.
    I also recorded a semi-live podcast during the trip that tells a different perspective of the same story.

    In hindsight...would you consider taking a hot tent next time?

      This is likely the most common question I get asked and the answer is no. There is no reliable wood and as a solo guy the system is just too heavy and the footprint too large for that topography. I know several groups that have done it and changed their minds after the first year.

    Crazy hard hunt, congrats on your effort, dont think I have what it takes to tackle a similar hunt. Thanks for sharing, this is so far outside what most folks have tackled so quiet entertaining and educational

    Looks like an extremely challenging hunt. Maximum effort was a good title choice. Most people could not make on a trip like this, I hope you found satisfaction in your completion of a solo adventure in the winter. Thanks for sharing.

    I really enjoyed the video man. Way to grind it out. I like you shared the psychological mind struggle that we all go through. Most wouldn’t have had the cahonas to put the chips in and do something that tough, me included.

    Man this was a hardcore hunt! Such a great job capturing the difficulty and struggles of a winter goat hunt. Not sure I'll ever be comfortable to do one solo but you've intrigued me enough to want to try a winter goat hunt one day. Kudos!

    At 65 I am so thankful I was able to get my one only goat I will ever kill behind me while I was still able to do so.. I am happy you are young and fit and can not only endure but also enjoy this type of hunt. Very few folks have that fortitude. I enjoyed watching through your trials and tribulations. Hope your sheep hunt goes off as planned.

    the real question...did MSR send you some new snow shoes or what

    • @MindfulHunter
      @MindfulHunter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They actually did. But asked me not to warranty any more as I exceeded the suggested weight limits lol. I thought that was fair.

    Good on ya for talking about the avalanche danger, shit's no joke. Looks like you were there for a couple avalanche cycles too. You hear any roaring down to the valley bottom? Looks like straight up winter mountaineering country. It's always insane to me to see where goats live - what an amazing animal. Idea: pull a sled if there's enough snow instead of carrying a pack and use trekking skis instead of snowshoes. Heavy trip!

    • @MindfulHunter
      @MindfulHunter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely heard avalanches lol. And thanks for the tips, I'll keep them in mind.

    Enjoyed both the podcast version and the youtube film. So now that the hunt is over and you have had time to reflect....do you think the megatarp and stove combo might have provided more comfort with the ability to have a fire each night and dry off a bit? Secondly, would carrying your gear on a sled have provided you the ability to cover more ground you think? And in closure...I had something come to mind Jay. You talk to the camera at normal volume, and maybe even a little loud at times. I was up shed hutning last weekend in the mtns, and its amazing how much voices carry when I was up on a bluff and listening down into a canyon. Do you feel that maybe game gets spooked because they can hear your voice carrying uphill? Just a thought to consider. Look forward to more info on your sleeping pad too...im SERIOUSLY considering the exped Winterlite as my next sleep pad.

    • @MindfulHunter
      @MindfulHunter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      All good questions. For starters there was zero dry firewood so unless you wanted to go up into the hills for wood every night the tarp/stove combo is a no go. A sled would never work in there. Way to much broken terrain. The voice question is interesting. I do tend to have a loud voice. I normally talk quietly if I’m in a sensitive situation. I also process the audio once I’m home and it makes it sound much louder. It’s good food for thought though. I’m just in the process of recording the gear review podcasts. They’ll be up this week and next. That sleeping pad is phenomenal

    If you were successful with getting a goat, was the plan to pack it out in one or more trips? Your films are legit keep up the good work.

    • @MindfulHunter
      @MindfulHunter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Excellent question and lesson learned. The plan, initially, had been to come out in one trip. However, after realizing how much weight I had to come out with due to it being a winter hunt I think you would need to do two trips. And to go one step further, I think it would be more efficient to ferry trips in 1 to 2 mile segments as walking in fresh snowshoe tracks is much easier. And treat the trek out as one long trip with many duplicated segments. And thank you for the feedback I love making these things almost as much as I love hunting.
