  • Alabama Football under Kalen DeBoer is a marquee we're still not used to, but a new era is underway in Tuscaloosa. On Late Kick Live Ep 527 Josh Pate discussed the biggest question in the room for Alabama: how much will a new offensive staff improve Jalen Milroe and the QB play overall? Could we see the passing game taken to the next level in a way similar to what we saw from Michael Penix at Washington? The thing that hurt Milroe last season was his center. Time after time after time, Milroe was having to pick the ball up off the ground which killed his timing and his ability to quickly read the defenses.

      No man what hurt Jalen Milroe last year was Jalen Milroe. He doesn't see the whole field. The center didn't tell him to stare down Burton, who was being double covered, while getting the shit blizted out of him. Before Alabama kicked their last FG against Michigan. He had two options, niblack wide open across the middle. A natural QB, knows where his hot routes are when he knows the blitz is coming. He didn't. A natural qb knows their limitations and strengths. When Michigan blitzed him on that play, with the kind of athlete Milroe is, as soon as that ball hit his hands, take off around the left side. All Alabama need to get was 9 yards and they win that game and the national championship. He picks that blitz up and committs to that run, no one catches him. The game wouldn't have had to go too overtime. When a woman is a walking red flag, you'd dont think they are curtains and ignore them. It's the old fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me

    Milroe is going to have a major advantage this year with Center consistency. Last year he had to keep guessing where the ball was going to be snapped?!
    If Brailsford is consistent, Milroe can focus on his own performance, instead of keeping his head down, guessing where the ball is going to be?!

      Huge Bama Fan here, i'm just as interested, if not more is how does the overall weight reduction, and protection/ running screens factor into offence rhythm.
      Getting the ball out of an inexperienced QB's hands and into the playmakers like you do with a talented offence
      I thought they could do this at some point last year, and there was little chance and only solid progression at the very end of the year
      Imagine needing a miracle 4th down play to beat a bad Auburn team, good thing they came to play vs Georgia
      I would like to hear from a Crazy Alabama fan who has tracked runs vs passes for the last 3-4 OC's
      and tell us how many times Bama passed right after a good/great run and never really trying to get a consistent/ dominant rushing attack before going to a pass, run, pass, pass offense
      I love Milroe and his great attitude, I do not think he is as dominant runner as some do, he seems pop out of bounds instead of getting maximum yards
      If the offense does what it should, he will be fine, and we can live with short/medium QB runs that occur when defense is out of position, and a few of his great ad-libs.
      Amazing to think if our OC had just told Jalen to pickup most loose snaps, look up and run or toss out of bounds as needed. We have a National Title I think.
      Jalen had no one even 10-20 feet from him when he fell on the ball....think he was doing what they told him to do

    Good call Josh. I agree. There are many in the "Milroe isn't the guy" camp that ignore his stats last year w a subpar Bama WR depth chart, and a lesser quality OC, ...that still barely lost to Michigan in OT...and they remain unconvinced. Many of whomst were also in the "Tua can't do it" and "Hurts isnt good enough" camp. Bless their hearts.

      @michaelbaker8633 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I'm not in the "Milroe can't do it" camp, and his numbers weren't mediocre, especially his passing efficiency. But there are some glaring holes in his game that he needs to improve on. His intermediate accuracy is not good, as he only completed just over 50% on throws in the 10-19 yard range. That has to get better. He also needs to be more decisive in the pocket whether that's getting the ball out, or taking off running sooner. The O line was not up to par last year by any stretch, but quite a few of the sacks they gave up were on Milroe. That being said....I think he will improve and end up in New York as a Heisman finalist

He did suffer from bad o line play but he needs to improve his awareness and short to mid passing game. If he does that, He will win the Heisman Trophy and Alabama will have a big year. If DeBoer Sheridan and all those camps make him into a qb (seeing rb, hitting guys in route 5-15 yards, hitting guys wide open, or fitting it in tight spots and hitting receivers) nobody will be able to touch the offense. Cause people would have to pick what they are scared of. Not just run game or deep pass. Offense will upgrade tremendously if Milroe learns to do everything he should have done last year everyone will be scared. If not hopefully DeBoer pulls the trigger and puts Simpson in. Simpson can definitely get it done.

    I get that bama has a ton of talent, but why does it seem that everyone is assuming they're not going to skip a beat this year and will keep the train rolling? As if losing arguably the goat in saban and replacing him with an outside hire and completely new system and staff won't matter or cause any growing pains?
    I think deboer is one of the best coaches in the country, but it's rare for any new outside coach to come in and find immediate success, especially at the level people are assuming they'll be at this year.

    • @skipgumphrey9579
      @skipgumphrey9579 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

      Folks are assuming that because Coach DeBoer has succeeded everywhere he’s been, he’s done it with a lot less talent, he’s got everyone there bought in to the system. Despite all of that, Coach Saban still has an office in the building and can help if needed. Put all that together and there’s at least a decent argument that the team doesn’t take much if any of a step back. They can actually be better than last season, who knows ?
      What is known so far is the new staff is definitely doing great so far. The naysayers have to keep changing the narrative about why CKD has to fail lol…

      I know he was an OT away from being in another national title after playing in another three years ago, but those past three years have been considered down/rebuilding years by many fans mainly due to underwhelming playcalling and schemes. Also something to be said for some highly rated high schoolers not developing. Point is bama was getting by on pure talent and I think a hungrier staff that’s never had that luxury will be refreshing. Plus still A LOT of top 10 to top 100 guys that woulda played a lot as underclassmen nearly anywhere else but have been sitting behind guys that play on Sundays now

    • @scottd1903
      @scottd1903 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@Thomthumbcrumb I do agree with that. I hold the very unpopular opinion that while saban is/was undoubtedly a great coach and one of the best to do it, a lot of his success was due to the talent he had. Which means he may (I stress may) have been a better recruiter than coach. But talent alone doesn't mean success (which i was i think he was still among the best). Just look at A&M who recruits highly and had arguably the best class ever a few years ago.
      Again, I think deboer is a great coach and will have success there, but the expectations for this year are far too high. Bama will be a very good team, but I don't think they have even a good chance of winning the SEC, and I wouldn't be surprised if they missed the playoffs altogether with like a 9-3 season.

And don't be surprised if Saban is at every big game this season and a text or communication device away from giving Deboer or Womack some advice if needed. He's a wishbone QB. It stuns me that people can't see it. The play before Alabama had to kick their last FG against Michigan showed me all i needed to know. You know, the one where everyone in the stadium knew they were going to blitz but Milroe? Niblack was running wide open across the middle. A Young, Tua or Mac would've stepped up into the pocket and made that play. The other option, which he had a more legit chance to do is, as soon as that ball is hiked, he sells out and goes around the left end. Alabama only needed ten yards. They get that, the game is over and essentially they are the national Champs. Nope. Miloroe stands in that pocket like it's Auburn only rushing two people. He stares down Burton, who is being double covered. It was insane. Also, during the Michigan, George and Auburn game, Alabama had wide open receivers all over the field. The Auburn game, is the only time I can remember an Alabama qb throwing that far past the line of scrimmage. Auburn could not cover Niblack. Niblack when he came to Bama was under the impression he'd have a like Byrcr or Mac throwing to him. Nope. The Georgia game should not have even been close. The offensive play calling was incredible. Rees created a massive amount of mismatches that should've led Alabama to scoring 40 to 50 points if say a Bryce Young was playing. It reminded me the Alabama vs Clemson game down in Tampa. You know the one, where Hurts had wide open receivers all night but lacked the abilty to either see them or get the ball to them. There were times when OJ Howard was so wide open, he could've played a game of pool. I'm gonna say from what I remember seeing sitting in that stadium, Alabama left a minimum of three touchdowns on thr feild that night. Hurts was 13 of 33.They had no business losing that game. Two Jalens will not get you one thing for sure, a national championship. It's not personal. its business. Know this, Alabama's head coach, needs to win right away. Teams will be bullets in the holy hell out of Jalen this fall. If he has the inability to know where is hot routes hurt to be able pick up the Blitz or see the whole field and know where all his receivers are, he will be benched. He can't afford to lose the fans the fans. Then again Alabama football fans can be pretty stupid at times. They're going to blame the offensive coordinator for Jalen throwing the ball 10 yards over someone's head the play calling sucks. I've been an Alabama fan since 1970 and I've never seen a group of fans that are so blind that the qualification for quarterback just be black. Don't put the best player out there put the quarterback out there that's black. It shouldn't even be about color, but everyone's so afraid to tell the truth. It's insane that they follow up a quarterback is fantastic and Brilliant as Bryce Young with Jalen. I'm not saying Jalen's not a good human being, he is. He loves Alabama. It's not about that, which is why some people are going to react to this post idiotic fashion . I would have loved to have seen Bryce stay one more year and had a defense like last year's team and won a national championship

    Bama fan here. I like Milroe, great kid, but the undeserved hype around Milroe has gotten more out of hand than the undeserved hate he ever got.
    Milroe last year had two good games and one great game (Georgia, Texas A&M, and LSU). He was a horrendous passer in every sense of the term. Couldn't read a defense pre or post-snap, no accuracy, no ability to layer passes, and he never used his legs to bail himself out of situations. Clearly a lot of this is on Reese being a mediocre-at-best OC, but Milroe wasn't doing himself and the offense many favors.
    I want Milroe to do great, obviously as a Bama fan, but him "taking the next step as a passer" would entail him just becoming average, not even good, let alone great. What I'd be curious to see is if we're on the timeline where Milroe gets benched for Ty Simpson, because the reaction to that will be something else to see.
