A true artist comforts the disturbed and disturbs the comfortable... this Aldous Harding certainly does remarkably well....may she never become to too disturbed to comfort for her raw genius is certainly not too comfortable to disturb... at times it feels as if she is singing directly into Van Gogh's Left ear....

She's completely committed to the zone when she's performing, like an actor who doesn't break character, amazing!

She has some of the most intense facial expressions and movements I've seen of any singer. It's weirdly fascinating to watch her perform.

Artists like Aldous Harding are the heart and soul of the music industry. They must continue to have an avenue to be able to make music, a platform to perform it and a way to monetise their recorded material.
I fear that as we enter a post capitalist age it's getting harder and harder to do that. With the greatest respect to the big pop performers that are pumped through the media, that's the commercial end, like processed food. Aldous Harding and her peers put veg on the table. If we enter a future where similar artists coming up behind them can't get to the table then we all miss out.

I'm always intrigued at AH's originality when she plays solo. Lately with the band, the music is pleasant, if a bit simple, a bit garage-band sounding to me.
I'm ambivalent about AH's face pulling, hunching, and staring. It's disquieting and unfathomable but I guess it's supposed to be.
I enjoy the utilitarian clothing as a counterpoint to over-sexualised performances elsewhere in the media. I appreciate AH's originality and her (and the band's) musical sensitivity. I love the videos that accompany the music online, that celebrate the theatre of music.
I'm just here to point out that in my years as a working musician I would've gotten opprobrium from my bandmates and employers pretty swiftly for pulling such schtick. It must be a niche audience and these must be niche venues to accommodate this sort of vibe.

I see what you are saying, but she's not going for mainstream appeal. Is it schtick? Or just what works for her? The ambiguity makes it interesting. Her songs, as odd as they are, seem to me to come from a space of sincerity and seriousness. How do we square that with the crazy faces? I'm not so sure. But I don't mind it either way. I really enjoy her music and the vibe. Compare this to Taylor Swift or Beyonce. We're talking about entirely different musical universes. I prefer Aldous's.

It’s a shame when freedom of expression is seen as schtick, I think one would have to know her personally to define what’s going on with her stage persona. The ‘Garage’ band sound seems to me to be part of her musical philosophy of keeping things loose and not tightly reined in, probably her idea of keeping it real. Who knows! What one can’t deny is the original and extremely clever - albeit seemingly simple - songwriting. And she certainly reaches into the heart and soul of her niche audience. For me quite simply a fantastic artist:)

Cartoonish rendition. Not saying it's wrong though.
