  • Finding puddles of urine around the house is no fun, especially if it stained that new carpet you just bought. And although we can easily get very upset and sometimes even angry with our dogs, we first need to try and understand why it is that our dog is urinating inappropriately.
So in this video, I will explain exactly what the clinical signs, causes, diagnosis, treatment and prevention methods for urinary incontinence in dogs are so that you can have a better idea of why it is that your dog is leaking all the time.
Dealing with a dog that has urinary incontinence can become quite frustrating when you need to continuously clean up the dog pee in the house and this can often result in misplaced anger towards your pet.
But in general, many dogs do respond really well to therapy and often enjoy a good quality of life. Some of the meds may need to be given lifelong to your dog and because of this, it is important to take your dog back to the vet for follow-ups to see if the dose remains effective.
Let me know if your dog ever suffered from urinary incontinence and what you and your vet did to help him?

19:04 in Scotland. Baie bly ek't jou video raakgeloop!

Our puppy went in for a neuter, he had a cryptorchid testicle, and could not control his urinary or bowl movements for a little over two weeks. Our vet said this was pain related and over time has shown very little improvement, it's been almost a month now and he still isn't normal. He can control most of his urinary movements and pee outside although he doesn't posture and is constantly constipated resulting in even more pain trying to pass bowl movements. Can we expect this to improve over the long term or did our vet seriously mess up our puppy? He is a 1 year old shetland sheepdog.

She still has good movement with medication but she was doing this before as well.

Hi Doctor, My dog (Bruno) met with an accident 2 years back when he was just 6 months old. He was limping and lost his control on bladder and excretion process due to nerve damage. today he is able to walk but still lost his control over his excretion process (Incontinence), can he ever recover ? We took Bruno to several vet's but couldn't get a proper answer from any vet. Can you please guide ?

My 14 year old female dog has been leaking and has been mainly when she’s sleeping or relaxed. So recently it’s been really strong smelling and had her urine checked- no infection but very diluted and high protein. Diluted wasn’t a surprise because she is drinking a lot more water. Normal for initial Cushing’s test but she’s been getting into the trash for food and she’s never done that until the past couple months. She recently went totally blind too. Zero response to light or anything right up to her eyes. I feel bad because I’m always stopping her to wipe her fur on her backside and the smell is just so strong like when she’s had uti in the past so I think she has uti but u/a shows not uti. I’m just super frustrated.

    • @DogtorPete
      @DogtorPete  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hey Julie. Did your vet test her kidney function and glucose? Diluted urine with high protein and an increase in drinking and urination are all signs of potential kidney disease. Diabetes is also something to rule out, especially if she has a very good appetite but still losing muscle mass. Cataracts can also develop with Diabetes, so maybe just take her to the vet to run some blood tests to make sure. :)

My puppy is 4 months old and started having accidents a week ago. He doesn’t realize he starts leaking urine and when he realizes he tries to run to the pad but almost always doesn’t get there on time and all you see is a path of urine he leaves. He also started with excessive thirst. His vet said his urine analysis came back clean and he does not know what it could be. He was not doing this before, he was good with urinating on the pad and drinking water just when he needed to. 😔

    • @doradora5547

Could it be the food he's eating? Maybe there are additives that make the dog thirsty.
You could try something plain for a week like boiled chicken and see if that helps

I just discovered that my female German Shepherd has a hooded Vulva. That’s why she is leaking. I never heard that dogs can be born this way before. Surgery is the best way but I can’t afford it. Her surgery would have been $4,200. Some can go up to $5,000.00. It’s considered plastic surgery. It was the second time around at the Vet and a different Vet that discovered her hooded valve. It had gotten ulcerated, infected and painful. It was awful. Now ai try my best to keep it dry so she won’t lick. Licking is what causes the ulceration plus then urine sitting in the area probably has acid adding to the issue. Vet gave me pain meds, incontinence meds. I had the surgery aspect but then my job ended so decided I will try this way and possibly get her surgery later if it can’t be kept under control. Breeders need to tell adopters about this. I adopted my pure bred pup from a regular pet rescue place but now I’m thinking the reason the breeder dumped her might be because of her hooded Vulva. ❤

Same here. It’s so pungent but she’s had blood work and urinalysis and no uti showed. I’m not sure what else to do but I think it’s uti. She is drinking so much more than she used to so her urine is diluted which I wonder if it affects the urine tests.

My little Yorkie is sitting right next to me...dying. She has been leaking urine on our bed. Waterproof pads and cloth velcro diapers helped a lot but when we went to the vet for flea meds, I brought up the leaking problem...I was prescribed Proin. The smallest mg tablet was 18 mg. That is for 10 - 20 lb dogs. I was told to cut the pills (even though the package said not to cut the pills). The pills are all single dosage for whatever the weight class. The vet tech said to cut it in half and give my Yorkie half in the morning and a half at night. Uh Hellooo, that means I am giving my 7 lb Yorkie a full 18 mg a day. I wish I had not mentioned the leaking. I would much rather change sheets and waterproof pads and cloth diapers every day instead of having to constantly check her breathing and heartbeat while waiting for her to pass.
My heart is broken, and I will forever blame myself for instigating a medication for my baby...just so I did not have to change linens constantly.
