Leaky Rusted Vintage Floor Jack Restoration (Snap-on)

- Welcome to my restoration channel! This is a restoration video of a Snap-on Floor Jack (YA 700 2 1/2 Ton) I purchased this from a guy off of Facebook Marketplace for $120 USD. The person I bought it from said it had a slow leak. Let me know if you like this jack restoration!
THE RESTORATION PROCESS
After getting this jack into the shop, I dismantled it and began cleaning the parts. After tearing the jack apart, I sand blasted a lot of the parts and also used paint remover. The jack frame was too large to fit into our small sand blasting cabinet, so I used wire wheels and wire brushes to clean the metal before priming. The hydraulic cylinder was torn apart and rebuilt before priming or paint due to the way they are put together. It appeared to me that these jacks were painted after some or all assembly. I was able to replace the seals in the hydraulic unit as it appeared to have a leak. The u-cup was brittle and stuck in the cylinder below the nylon ring. The rebuild kit was purchased online as well as the new caster wheels and handle accessories. During the tear down, I accidentally broke the pin housing on the yoke. It was quite the process to repair due to being cast. We heated the part before welding, then we heated it after welding and placed in some sand/media to cool the part down slowly to prevent further cracking. I was able to get a steel tube from a local shop to fab the handle.
Overall I am happy how the jack restoration turned out. The jack works great as shown at the end of the restoration video. It is smooth and can be lowered with slow control which is what I want in a good floor jack. It is almost too pretty to use, but…we will be using it.

Thanks for checking out this Snap-on jack restoration! I bought this for $120 off of Fb Marketplace. With the jack, parts, paint, and jack oil, I have about $383 or so into this. Was it worth it? I really like the way it turned out. Let me know what you think! Thanks for watching. I do appreciate it!
If you haven't seen my Ingersoll Rand 231 Model A restoration, here it is: th-cam.com/video/YPdNFjYANjE/w-d-xo.html
Youre not counting labor. Vintage snap on is around 700 maybe
It was worth it for me, I enjoyed watching your great restoration
@@tunwellengineering733 thanks! Glad you enjoyed
@@scissrface2182 labor is cheap when doing it yourself! 😁
How are you doing the stickers?
Beauty. Nicely done. Makes me smile how many of your tools are from Harbor Freight doing the work on this Snap-On jack.
Thank you very much! I’m cheap but they work!
Awesome restoration! I'm a retired mechanic who now restores old farm tractors. There's something about restoring equipment. We live in a disposable society where its easier to throw away and buy new. The trouble is that probably 2/3s of folks would have thrown this jack away and got a new one. This jack is just as good as new and you got the satisfaction of restoring it. Great job!
Very true! I appreciate the comment! We have some old tractors (8N) to redo at some point. Thanks for watching!
I agree. I'm a packrat. I have an old Ford 860, 961, and 3 old ford F-100s to restore.
It was already working so I would've bought it just for that honestly
Not to mentioned the quality of things has gotten even worse after 2020. Also amazing to see skilled people work.
Yes some times a thankless task
I had no idea that there were so many parts to that thing! Great job, I'm impressed.
Thank you! It’s interesting how these things are put together and how they work! Takes a lot of moving parts!
Neither had I. Here Italy.
That is the first video over 15 mins long that I’ve watched at normal speed in two years. Excellent work.
Thank you very much! Appreciate that! Have a great day!
I bought the same jack from the dealer for $200 used. It lasted me 39 years before taking a shit. The hydraulic unit was called a "power unit" to the tune of 600 bucks! Went to the local rubber and gasket company and spent $56 for seals and made the nylon pump seal. Works like a charm.
Awesome. Hopefully this one will live for another 39 years +. And that is quite pricey for a new unit! Thanks for the info! 👍
His perfectly clean and organized tools alone make me want to watch more. And live in his workshop.
Lol live there? 😂 thanks for the comment!
Um, live there? Not until he restores a mouse trap.
You can smell the paint whilst watching. Great touch not ruining this extraordinarily good video with music, your work is the soundtrack.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed. 👍
nice to see Mr. Pittsburgh helping out his competition 😉
Lol I have to use what I have 🤷♂️
Absolutely the best floor jack restoration I have ever seen!...and I've seen a LOT of them! I've even done a few myself!
Too kind but thank you! I appreciate it. Have a great day!
You haven’t restored anything your lying. I know it.

As someone who is a mechanic and has several Snap-on tools as well as having a grandfather that’s a mechanic who has nothing but Snap-on tools, none of us have had a Snap-on jack, but I will say that jack looks beautiful
Thanks for the comment! I am happy how it turned out. Thanks for watching 👍
I have an old floor jack that I inherited when my dad passed. I would love to restore it to it’s original condition!
That would be awesome! They aren’t terrible to rebuild! Let me know if you have any questions! Thanks for watching! 👍
I have the same jack. It was shockingly expensive but it’s a workhorse and has never let me down, unless I turned the handle! Lol!! Your jack looks beautiful. Your professionalism showed when you welded the cast ear and you buried it in sand to control its cooling. Excellent job boss!
Thank you very much! The welding was definitely a learning process. Thanks for the comment and for watching
I was hypnotised for 42 min😅.
Very good job. Well done!
That jack has at least another 100 years of life left in it.
Thank you very much! Hopefully it does! 👍
@@RebuiltRestoredagreed, but what’s with the mouse 🐭 crawling across your workbench.
saw it and I was like, wait what???😳
Your videos gave me the confidence to restore an old abused craftsman radial arm saw from the 80’s and an ancient bench vise that was very well used from a mechanic shop. Both turned out great and work flawlessly.
Very very cool! Keep up the good work and have a great week!
I can honestly say, I don’t think I have ever started watching a restoration video. Thinking oh it’s just a….. and then just be more and more intrigued and engrossed as it went on, just a brilliant restoration, a great video, and a true set of knowledge and skill.

Oh wow - there are SO many varieties on the Interweb. Tool restorations, toy restorations, furniture restorations, computer restorations, sneaker restorations, etc. etc. etc. You name it, there's a multitude of restoration videos for that thing.
Just bought one at an estate sale for $30. Needs to be restored as well. Man I never realized how intricate these are!
They take some work but they are worth it! Good find and good luck on your restore! If you have questions don’t hesitate to reach out! Have a great week! 👍
One item there was a change to the oil reservoir when you put it on turn it off center of the oil release hole approximately 7 to 10 degrees. When you lower the jack, the oil will or can come out through the vent. I made this change back in approximately 1995 and applied at the factory on the new models. Well done ✅
Wow! That’s a really interesting comment. Did you work for the manufacturer then? These jacks are extremely impressive compared to the run of the mill today stuff.
@@Beenthere5409 not at the factory, but when doing warranty repairs at a store in Portsmouth, Virginia. We were a authorized repair shop. Thanks for your work, and well done 👍
i have 4 of the 642 models all different makes and i noticed the hole was not alingned i always wondere why nice story
I'd bet this jack will be around 50 years longer than the Chinese jacks, and still working great. And then it could be rebuilt again! Beautiful job on this!!
Hopefully it well! It may out last me!
this makes me want to even more restore my grandfathers jack he got from sears back in the 70's not great but i have good memories using it
You definitely should restore it! 👍👍
Deeply jealous of your tool collection. Not to mention your patience and expertise. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much!
Amazing.... can you create new videos at least once a week? your restorations are perfect!
Unfortunately I can’t get them done once a week. I am working on one now and hope to have it out ASAP! Thanks for the support!
This was the best rebuild video on a floor jack I've seen yet. Wow, that was amazing from start to finish. Beautiful work.
Thank you very much! I appreciate that
@@RebuiltRestored What years was this jack produced?
I used to repair hydraulic cylinders. But the boss always told customers no hydraulic jack repairs. Now I know why. It wouldn’t be cost effective on a per hour basis compared to a normal hydraulic cylinder. Thanks for showing how it’s done.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing and for watching! 👍
I bought that same jack new and paid $460 for it (many years ago) i bought it because the Walker jack only had lift height of 20" and Snap on jack was 25 1/2" jack still works great
Very cool! Thanks for watching!
I also have the exact same jack, found mine in a scrap metal pile for $3. Did spend about $200 having a hydraulic machine shop rebuild the cylinder. One mod I had to do was remove the nubs that hold the saddle side supports to the jack body, drilled out to 1/2 inch and replaced with heavy duty bolts. Bought an oem handle brand new on ebay when I found one come up. Thing is an absolute beast, easily lifts my Hondas 2 feet off the ground without sweat. I feel one restored and painted like yours is easily worth a few thousand dollars, as they are true industrial grade and last a very long time. Thank you for the video.
Very cool! Thanks for the comment! $3 is a much better deal! Great find👍👍👍
This dude is stocked with harbor freight tools fixing a snap on jack. I freaking love it. I am a mechanic that fell into snap on and own way to many snap on tools. This goes to show you don't need that junk. It's an expensive name. Good job.
Great rebuild for sure. Probably can’t yet afford Snap On tools… but keep doing videos like this and you will soon be able to afford anything!!😊
Thanks! It’s not that I don’t want nicer but the budget doesn’t always agree and these tools are doing the trick! lol
@@Beenthere5409I wish people would stop treating snap on like it’s a holy grail 🤣🤣🤣 you’ll learn eventually , I figure once you’re done paying for your tools 15 years from now . Idiot
A TH-cam channel did a comparison of the top floor jacks on the market. Including Snap-on, Harbor Freight, craftsman and several others I don't remember the name. The Yellow Daytona harbor freight floor jack tested best over all the tests that were done. I had just bought one of the worst of all the ones represented. I felt extra special when I saw that!! That aircraft paint remover is the real deal. It works great on car paint too. It works down to the bare metal in minutes!!
Thanks for the comment. Those Daytonas look pretty sweet I must say. And yes, I need to get more of that paint remover. It’s good stuff! Thanks for the comment and I appreciate the view!
I actually have one of those jacks. The best jack I ever bought
Very cool! I like this one for sure!
This was excellent. You really went all out. Love the result.
Thanks for watching! I appreciate it!
As they say, better than new. I'm amazed at your knowledge of what the numerous plugs, washers etc are called. Obviously a mechanic? I loved the way you took so much care to protect the finish when reassembling. Please, restore that vice that is crying out for a bit of TLC.
Thank you very much and yes the old vise was recently acquired. It works great but looks rough. Maybe a future project! 👍 thanks for the support! I appreciate the comment and the view!
I would be very surprised if a jack of this quality couldn't handle more than its safe working load. Easy to see the quality and robustness of the parts as you cleaned them up.
Yea you are probably correct! Thanks for the comment! 👍
I bought this exact jack,on special, From Snap-On for $500 9 years ago and still works flawlessly!
Great job and video! Well done
Awesome! Thank you for the comment! Was it new?
@@RebuiltRestored yes, normally $1000 !
You got a great floor jack now!!
In this age of disposable everything, it's nice to see things restored for continued use. :)
Thanks much! I agree
That jack was made by Lincoln Walker it will lift 10 tons even though it says 2 1/2 tons. You did a fantastic job.
Thanks for the info! Thanks for watching!!
I inherited a bunch of floor jacks and tons of tools I am tripping on all the time. This will be my next project after I finish my barn. Thanks.
That will be cool! 👍 if you have any questions during the rebuild, feel free to reach out! 👍
Your attention to detail is incredible. I thought I was particular about things..... Excellent work and I appreciate you being true to The Word.
Thank you very much! God bless! 👍
Definitely worth the rebuild. You got a bombproof jack for the price of a throwaway jack. I was going to toss my old floor jack rather than rebuild, and am glad I did not. One call to the customer line at HF convinced me: no support for parts. My fixed jack is working great..
Thank you! Glad you were able to fix your jack! I appreciate the view 👍
I personally use a hockey puck on all my jacks to protect my cars undercarriage when I jack them up. Great video!
That’s a good idea! Thanks 👍
You started with a well made hard worked piece of equipment and with a 2/12 ton of work (pun intended) brought it back to new . Well done !!
Thank you very much!
Well, using crafsman tools and accessories to restore SnapOn priceless😂 love it that you actually use the tools that you restore, they are not just for show, regards and best wishes from Scotland 🛠️🏴🇬🇧👍

I have my dads old craftsman from the 80's or earlier still and keep meaning to buy the rebuild kit. Thanks for the reminder and inspiration.
Very cool! Hope your rebuild goes good! Thanks for the comment!
What a great project! We’re you able to get a rebuild kit from Snap On?
Thanks you. And no, I found this rebuild kit on eBay. Thanks for the comment! 👍
Really cool restoration! The red color itself has a beautiful tint! With white letters on it it looks even more cute!
Thanks! I am happy with how it turned out. Thanks for watching and for the comment!
Very impressive that you knew how to take that thing apart bit by bit. Even the small pieces. That’s crazy. And remembering how it went back together. Or watching the video on how you took it apart lol. My favorite is the John 3:16 in the back ground. 👏👏🙌
Thank you very much! Yes it is handy to be able to watch the film back if I forget lol Thanks for watching! I appreciate it! And the sign was a gift. Have a great week!
Beautiful work. I'll add to the chorus by saying I too have never seen one of these floor jacks restored before. So many pieces & parts. The old workhorse definitely deserved this spa week. 🧡
I’m definitely going to hang on to it now! 👍
Great Job!!! You are a gifted artist! Love watching things be restored!
This is outstanding. But on a side note, did anyone else notice the rat? 😂 I found it absolutely hilarious. Right at 21:59 🤣
Thanks! Rat???? 😉
Une très belle restauration d'un outil encore fabriqué aux USA car malheureusement tout vient maintenant de Chine avec la qualité qu'on connait. 😢😢. Merci pour votre travail.

I saw you used the impact driver you restored in a different video. Super cool
Thanks much and good eye👍
I tried doing this with an old Larin Jack, never worked the same after taking apart and re-assembled with rebuild kit.. I gave up and junked it. This is very cool.
Man that’s too bad! Thanks for watching! 👍
I see why the forbidden part is like that now most would definitely not be able to put those tiny pieces back in order 😂
Yeah it is something I had to pay attention too.
Excellent job! I can tell you have experience welding castings from the little "tips" you gave. Well done!
Thanks! That was a learning experience for us.
That was a LOT of work but the final outcome is awesome. Great job !!!
It took some time! Thank you! I am happy with it.
If everything was rebuilt that thoroughly and carefully, I would never spend the extra money on new. Great job!!
Thank you very much!
Stunning restoration job. You can’t beat snap-on either. Looks amazing!
Thanks much and yes, snap on is quality 👍
I just rebuilt a YA700. Thank you for showing how it should look. Very helpful 👍
Great! Glad to hear it! Thanks for the comment!
When you first started draining the oil I thought to myself “it’s really not that bad” then all the crap came out! Lol
Lol needed an oil change!
Wow. Hand made with love on each piece. Probably better made than at the factory.
Thanks much! I appreciate that!
Wow! Fantastic job! A very enjoyable project to watch. Thanks for bringing us along.
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed! Have a great day 👍
Finding all those little parts seems so daunting to me about a project like this. Very nice job!
There are quite a few small pieces! And thank you!
Beautifully done! No one goes that far looking at the budget. A budget rebuild would've just been new seals and a simple cleaning! Great job!
Thank you very much! 👍
And that would’ve been all that was needed.
Dude for some reason I found this video mesmerizing and I rarely use that term of wording when replying to a video on You Tube . I bet you have at least 50 hours or more into it WOW! GREAT JOB LOVE IT ! Years ago I had and old school Walker American made floor jack I ordered the seal kit but for some reason nothing went right with it I couldn't do the job and I chucked it and went to scrap I cant remember now what it was but something broke when trying to rebuild it . I kick myself in the ass now you cant buy American Made jacks like this anymore
Thanks for the compliment! And probably all of us through stuff away that we should have kept. You will have to look for another used one. I was able to find this particular one on Facebook marketplace. Thanks for reaching out!
looks so good, almost afraid to get it dirty
Lol I know what you are saying 😂
Nice Job! I doubt you'd find a comparable new one for what you put into yours.
Yeah. I’d like to try out one of the better Harbor Freight jacks at some point.
wow, the thoroughness is what makes this really cool. down to every last nut and bolt
Thanks much! I appreciate it 👍
