I worked at a manufacturing plant, years ago. One week, I took a 3-day weekend, and when I came back on Monday to work, the gates were locked. I asked the guard what happened, and he said to me, "were'nt you here last Friday? Management came in during lunch break escorted by security, and told everyone they were moving operations out of state. Employees were layed off and had to leave the premises immediately". While people were literally chewing their food. There is no point in being loyal to any of these companies anymore, look at how they treat you.

This is what happens when you start a trade war. Tariffs increase the cost of doing business in the U.S. These are the first casualties of the 2nd Trump tariff war. After the first Trump Tariff war in 2018, fully one third of income for U.S. farms was funded by tax payers in the form of a bailout and most of that went to multi-national agri-corps. Ever hear of the Smoot-Hawley tariffs?
[After passing of the Smoot-Hawley tariff Act] U.S. imports from Europe declined from a 1929 high of $1,334 million to just $390 million in 1932, while U.S. exports to Europe fell from $2,341 million in 1929 to $784 million in 1932. Overall, world trade declined by some 66% between 1929 and 1934.
Smoot-Hawley marked the end of the line for high tariffs in 20th century American trade policy. Thereafter, beginning with the 1934 Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act, the United States generally sought trade liberalization through bilateral or multilateral tariff reductions. To this day, the phrase “Smoot-Hawley” remains a watchword for the perils of protectionism.

@@marcreynolds4473Companies run on profits, yeah? So they have people involved in watching politics, pushing for legislation that favors them, influencing taxes, and also watching the prices of their materials, right?
So a tariff is a targeted fee on imports. For example, the US was fighting with France because France had a tariff on aircraft that protected their own aircraft industry, keeping their planes cheaper than Boeing aircraft. Boeing could not compete with the lower cost.
So by promising to put a tariff on almost all imports, Trump has every company examining what will happen when the costs of their imported materials goes up.
You seem to be unaware that almost every item is made with some amount of imported goods. From dog food to clothing, from tires to aircraft, from your veggies to your medications, there is import involved.
A tariff is meant to protect an established industry from competition. We have very very few products that 100% made in the US from materials that originated in the US. It takes time to build a factory, time to find collect or mine raw materials and then process them into useable forms, and you have to have the infrastructure in place to do it. We don’t. We are not self sufficient, so all a tariff will do is increase prices for the things you and your family need.
An estimate is that you will spend $3,000 a year more for the goods you buy now.
And companies are looking at if they can stay profitable if their goods rely upon imports.
Congratulations on electing a man who bankrupted his companies six times, and is in underwater in debt. Yup. Clearly, an economic genius. Well done.

My friends and coworkers accused me of knowing that was going to happen, but it was not true. What I am trying to convey is that some of these closures are nothing more than business decisions owners and senior management make but for many reasons don't share with their loyal workers. Since then, I always assume that my place of work may have a lock and a chain on the entrance at any time without notice. Because of that, I learned to keep taps with the job market, remain relevant to secondary careers, and save enough to go at it without a job for at least an entire year. It sucks but that is a reality that may have nothing to do with the political temperature of the nation and economic challenges affecting the entire world.
