    Thank you for a most excellent episode. What an extraordinary woman! I had no idea of the depth and breadth of her acting career, and the details of her personal life. Hamilton's perfect portrayal of the Wicked Witch terrified me as a kid, but I think if I were to ever watch The Wizard of Oz again, my only thoughts would be what a kindhearted, gentle woman.

    Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch is the main reason I continue to watch the "Wizard of Oz"...even at age 75! Her timeless, excellent portrayal of the Witch and those terrifying Flying Monkeys!! YIKES...

    • @missanne2908
      @missanne2908 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +12

      It might help you to realize that the Flying Monkeys were not evil, only mischievous. A sorceress cursed the FMs so that anyone who puts on a certain gold cap could force the monkeys to do three things. In one scene a FM is holding the gold cap, but otherwise the film doesn't go into the origin story of the FMs, unlike the book. In the book, Dorothy gets hold of the gold cap at one point and then when she was done she passed it onto Glinda. Glinda also used the gold cap, but in the end she breaks the curse and sets the FMs free.

      @SparkeysMum Guess what. She is the reason I got into Wicca to disprove this sexist propaganda vilifying witches that she is truly responsible for as an Aunt Sally. The Threefold Law(Rule of Three) affected here in return. Today, nobody cares or remembers this Hamilton.
      But many, however, accept and respect Laurie Cabot, Z Budapest, Starhawk, and Phyllis Currot(all genuine witches) who will always be respected and remembered.
      Phyllis here was the next step to Wicca. Also want to mention and credit Candia Ridley McCormack(female Gothic witch) of the band Inkubus Sukkubus(Gothic Rock) for keeping me going.

      And bear this in mind: Judy was producer Mervyn LeRoy's only choice for the role, and he wouldn't hear of anyone else. Part of the reason he made the movie in the first place was to showcase her talents.
      His personal choice for the Wicked Witch, on the other hand, was Gale Sondergaard.

In fact, she was the only one who really befriended Judy Garland while filming “The Wizard of Oz” and even let her stay with her and her son for a week in their home! I have always found Margaret Hamilton's face fascinating. In the late 1970s, I found myself in a Chinese restaurant on Irving Place in Manhattan, a few blocks from Gramercy Park. Seated at the next table was Margaret Hamilton, thoroughly enjoying her meal and being left alone by the other diners who obviously knew who she was. As a scared 6 or 7 yr old, when watching Oz the first time, my mom chimed in with all the details you just spoke of and how Margaret Hamilton was a very kind sweet person in reality. My mom was the who's who of everyone famous, weather it was a King or Queen of a foreign country, or Michael Nesbitt's mother! RIP Mom!

    She was also the commercial spokesperson for Maxwell House Coffee, back in the '70's. Not until I was older, did I wonder why it was aired on Thanksgiving day. Whilst watching this video, I asked Google.... Evidently, is also aired on easter. Also; Google said that the Oz, book series, would come out during christmas..... Interesting... I won't watch it anymore; but when I did watch it, as a child, the flying monkeys were always the most scary!!

    Interesting story! Margaret Hamilton was such a compelling figure both on and off the screen. I’ve also seen her guest appearance on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, where she explained the role of the Wicked Witch and helped demystify it for children-such a thoughtful thing to do!
    I wonder if any of her children or descendants are still alive. Her son, Hamilton Wadsworth Meserve, has spoken about her legacy in the past, so perhaps he could provide more insights.
    The details surrounding the on-set accident are fascinating. Although she didn’t sue after being burned during the pyrotechnic mishap, I wonder how MGM handled her recovery. Did they continue paying her regular salary and provide extra compensation as a gesture of goodwill for her injuries? It would be interesting to know how studios of that era supported actors in such situations, especially considering the risks many of them faced while filming.
    Beyond The Wizard of Oz, I’d love to learn more about her other work, like her dedication to children's education, which she prioritized later in life. Her impact went far beyond the silver screen!

    I loved this narration of the true Margaret Hamilton. I had heard from other sources before that she was, indeed, a kind and gentle person. I just am saddened, though, that during those days they didn't have some of today's more gentle "cosmetics" and so had to suffer so badly. But that she was a great lady, there is no doubt and thank you for sharing this.

    Thanks, an extraordinary woman indeed! What most people also don't know is that the iconic classic "The Wizard of Oz" was first shown at the famous Cape Cinema next door to the equally famous Cape Playhouse in Dennis, MA on Cape Cod! That was because at the time, the late great Margaret Hamiliton was starring in a play at the playhouse where other notable stars had performed and she was instrumental in getting it shown at the Cape Cinema! I went to the 60th anniversary of the showing there, but it didn't take up the whole screen, it was a small picture shown in it's original size before they enlarged it. Other famous people who have starred at the playhouse have been the late greats Gregory Peck, Henry Fonda and a young Jane Fonda as well as others, and it was the late great Bette Davis's first job there, as an usher before she acted on stage there and became a big major movie star like the others here. . The playhouse, an old church converted into a barn like theater in 1928 was one of the first summer stock theaters in the country.

      Yes... same here. Back "in-the-day" before t.v. videos, etc. you could only see a show when the t.v. station deemed to show it on their t.v. programming. The Wizard Of Oz on t.v. only once a year... so it was a very big deal to see it on t.v.

      There's a Mr. Rodgers reboot now about the children of the characters in the original show. The main character's parents have another baby (to teach kids about what life is like after a new sibling is born). They name the baby "Margret". I always wondered if it was a tribute to Margret Hamilton.
