Imagine being the King's son, newly ascended to the throne of a crumbling nation, fraught with grief for your father and the sure disappointment you will bring to his name in the coming end to this war, when all of a sudden, you see that out of a dust storm on the Red Sea, you sight the billowing flag of the Portuguese Navy as dozens of great warships sail into harbor. Offloading hundreds of soldiers and thousands of muskets, their captain comes up to you, pauses, and offers you his hand, saying: "Olá meus irmãos. Ouvimos sua ligação e agora estamos aqui para ajudar." :)
u exaggerated it. first, there were at best hundreds of soldiers and only 400 musketeers the rest were made in Ethiopia, the warship weren't used in that battle nor were that many, not even close.
To understand the "yo wanna fight me bro" you must understand Portuguese culture and our overwhelming desire to piss people off, it's in our DNA can't help it.

The conquest and or construction of forts, garrisons, and the establishment of treaties served the interest of snatch the Indian trade from our rivals - namely the Ottomans and Venice. Colonialism came precisely after the disastrous Iberian Union, where we lost the monopoly of India, and then turned to further exploit the territories of Brasil. The moment when the few remaining Portuguese trained the Ethiopians with using the musket reminded me of the film "last samurai", where the Japanese were trained with using modern firing equipment.
Guess what, the portuguese are credited with the introduction of firearms "arquebus or Tanegashima" to Japan in 1543 absolutely altering the course of Japanese history, it was during the Sengoku period that Samurai based warfare declined with the increasing deployment of large numbers of Ashigaru in battle not exactly in the Meiji restoration period as shown in the movie, still it's a great Tom Cruise performance don´t get me wrong even tho misleading about history.from 🇵🇹
@@brunopimenta8204 the Japanese kicked most westerners and banned firearms when the Sengoku period ended and went back to sword fighting. The Last Samurai is mostly accurate, as far as Hollywood movies go.
The Last samurai... That movie where the north americans introduce firearms in japan and helped in unification off all japan like 200 years before exist north america?
Well,...if I remember well, the chronicles over here in Portugal doesn't say quite that (the ~50 remaining training their allies in the use of the musket) otherwise this would make a lot of sense right when they landed from the Armada heading to the Red Sea. Indeed there was a big cache of material, some heavy, that had been buried because it was not feasible to move it around, and in some extent the training could have happened but it doesn't look to have been written by the writer which accompanied the expedition. What it is written is that a complete change of tactics took place for the final engagement with the Portuguese contingent taking care (aim) solely against the Ottomans while the Ethiopian Cavalry and other forces doing as much as possible to cover them. Eventually one good aimed shot made the difference. It is also not commented that the Ethiopian Royalty weren't impressed at first with the number or ability of the Portuguese that came in their help. Cristovão da Gama was aware of that and in one of the early skirmishes when the Ethiopian allies advised to simply go around an enemy high ground stronghold they classified as too difficult to take, he took a chance to single handed with his men take it out without help of their allies. The description of the events is interesting. For some days the Portuguese would probe the walls with small groups. On a safe distance, hidden, the Artillery commanders were observing where the reaction was showing in the walls and doing their maths. When finally the day of the assault come, they divided the group and storm the fort from 3(?) sides. Already knowing where the defenders would gather, the artillery showed up and fired simultaneously for the 1st time with repeated precise hits, creating havoc in the structure & defences. Casualties among the Portuguese were very low. At the distance it is said the Royalty was witnessing the events astonished and from that point onwards they would comply with whatever the course of action the Portuguese suggest.
Not a lot of people know this but Ottomans helped Somalis to fight back Portuguese and their African allies of Ethiopians, that Friendship between Somalis and Turks still strong.

I am so absolutely proud and excited by the fact you're venturing into neglected and little-discussed conflicts and history such as those from our little pocket of the world, East Africa (Somalia)
Imam Ahmad is noted by the majority of scholars to be a somali. He's mostly known for leading a majority somali army that defeated the Ethiopians. The Ethiopians actually outnumbered the somalis the majority of the time actually. There's actually a battle where the Ethiopians had 200,000 footmen and 10,000 knights whereas the somalis were only 15,000. The somalis only had a single elite company of gunners.
@@ayubosman3105 Imam Ahmed Ibrahim Al Ghazi (nicknamed Gurey in somali) was a somali imam who waged a jihad against the solomonic dynasty. He fought many major battles where most he was outnumbered over 10-1. He conquered 2/3rds of the Ethiopians lands. However they asked for help from the Portuguese,, they lost some of their land, Ahmed asked the help of the ottomans and there was one final battle where he was eventually killed. In the end, everything returned back to how it was in the beginning. What Kings and General does is make it seem like an Arab-Habashi war which it isn't. The majority of Ahmed's army including himself were somali tribal warriors. Also he makes it seem like a one sided annihilation of the somalis. This is because he only uses Portuguese sources. He never bothers using the Futuh Al Habasha, it was written by one of his followers Sihab Ad-Din Ahmad. If this video was non biased he'd have used both sources and using analogy he'd use the more accurate source of the two for different parts of the story. However he biases the Habashi side and makes them look like they dominate the somalis. Its the other way around, throughout history whenever it was 1v1 between somalis and Ethiopians we'd always kick their asses. However they always run to Europeans for help.
@@ayubosman3105 Somalis are nomadic pastoralists. The only reasons somalis began writing and anything was because of Islam. Before that nobody ever bothered. It would be easier for us to find our more about somali history if it was written down but somalis know their own history and thats all that matters. Its not even just somalis, there's hundreds of groups of people who've had insane and amazing history but its transmitted orally to their descendants.
Somalis and Ethiopian learn from your history and appreciate it. Don’t fight over PS. We are all same blood in different religions. We have more in common than our differences. As a Somali I respect our common history in east africa
We are neighbours but we don't have anything in common, Somali's are Cushite, native to Africa,Amhara and Tigray are Semitic people who migrated from Arabia and mixed with local population. We can be neighbours but stay with in your borders.
Fun fact. Before the battle began 16:16 the Ottoman soldiers made a great speach to the Adal sultanate soldiers. In the past we didn't know what they said because there were no records. The fact that Africa had such empires tells us that they arent third world countries, but that they were great statesmen, merchants and warriors and not just "uneducated" and "poor" people, but more than that
@Forsaken Janissary Actually, many Africans voluntarily converted to Islam and then created large empires. Mansa Musa's wealth resulted more than from a trade in slaves. Mali's wealth derived from it being situated between lucrative trade routes connecting North Africa with lands south of the Sahara. Gold and salt were shipped through these routes. Mali's taxation of trade routes is what made Mali and its emperors exorbitantly wealthy.

@ABA Thank you so much for your honesty. I really appreciate it. Ahmed ibn ibrahim al ghazi was harari. The adal and ifat kingdoms were founded by hararis and some yemenis. Most Somalis were unaware of the battle between adal and absynnia because they were nomads that were isolated from the rest of the world. Somalis joined the conflict later on. Ahmed ibn ibrahim al ghazi uncle mahfuz was a harari as well. This was a war fought between the Ethiopian Muslims from the lowlands and the Ethiopian Christians from the highland. @@rediettadesse2828 So much hate in your heart 🤣 all he said was "my love and respect to the somali and ethiopian brothers". Somali's have always existed there they came in backwards migrations in many many millennia ago as proven by genetic sampling... Somali's are documented as people in rich city states due to indian trade you are ahistoric. Much of the somali's in the interior had nomadic lives however it is a stupid argument to call somalis nomadic themselves since they had developed cities in the middle ages and prior.

@@gustavomatias2089 this movie takes place in the 19th century.
In EU4, Ethiopia is one of my favorite nations.

@@Neraphim tell me more about this
@@ayubosman3105 Imam Ahmed Ibrahim Al Ghazi (nicknamed Gurey in somali) was a somali imam who waged a jihad against the solomonic dynasty.
@@Neraphim ye bro the only thing that angers me about our somali ancestors is that they hardly ever write down their legacy, its all just oral 😡😡😡

@Admire Kashiri sofala literally means ‘go dig’ in Somali referring to the gold deposits that were then shipped back to Somalia. Even the Swahili coast was by de facto ruled by Somalis since they were freed from Portuguese annexation by the ajuraan navy & ottoman navy.
@@vinny-xx2sj dont forget maldives
So at what point to do we talk about the history of the Wayao and the Makonde of Mozambique???? Nobody I know has ever submitted the Makonde in battle and the portuguese lost every battle with Makonde and against Vachopi.
@@vinny-xx2sj Somali history is so underrated

Amazing! Ethiopia's history is so deep, biblical, mythical, and still a big part of their culture. Would love to see more of your presentations on their stories, ie their 3000+ year old Solomonic Dynasty, etc!
Thanks Kings and Generals, as a kid in somalia oral evening stories was part of the warrior Ahmed Gurey(left handed) or you call Ahmed Grange, Somali fighter in Adelaide, Adel sultan against Portugal invasion wished to spread Christian in 1520..., the same as another somali warrior,, Sayid Mohamed, Britain call Mad Mullah, fighting against British Colonial want spread christianity, and not the last wish to know more east African, Somali warrior in south such as Ajuran sultan, good fighters. Am proud to be Somali
No Portugal and turkey are external powers both Christianity and Islamism was in Ethiopia long time ago before 4 Ad ... Learn more about Al nejashe
i have been a huge fan from Ethiopia. and now thank you for including Africa in world Histroy. there is still so much to be told!
Finally! I've been waiting for this for awhile. Awesome video! Please continue to do more like it.
I'd recommend covering the Ogaden war aswell since it's almost like a spiritual successor. The Ogaden war is a modern war that would likely have a winter war feel to it
Isn't this more of an Ethiopian-Somali war, with the Portuguese supporting the Christian side and the Ottomans supporting the Muslim side?
Unlike the ogaden war this war was not wagged in the name of somali but by that of islam evidenced by iman's divert army from oromo, somali, amarah, afar and hareri ppla
Yes you are correct - probably the only person on here with any brain cells
@DidacusAugustus
They were already fighting for nearly a century before ottomans came into the picture
First ottoman sultan Adal contacted was Selim I, clearly shows the beef was pretty long
There was even a time mamluks requested Ifaat sultanate (predecessor of adal) to raid the ethiopian highlands after the Ethiopian King threatened to flood the Nile in a dispute with mamlukes
It was in the 1400 or something shortly after tamerlanes shenanigans
@@siciidali499 I would have liked to say that the Ogaden war was a Soviet-soviet war, but most of the soviet assistance for the Somalis came before the war.
Silly me.
Somalis played an insignificant role in the adal and abyssinian conflict.
I’m excited and happy you guys move around from times and places in your videos. It really helps me get a full picture of history by way of understanding conflict. I can’t thank your channel enough for the free knowledge that has given the people both an entertaining experience and an informed view of these events. Keep up the fantastic work
am proud to be ETHIOPIAN and tnx for covering our hisory i hope u will add more about ethiopia
That is the most unusual three words together. Ottoman Portuguese war in Africa? I didn't even know that was a thing.
Avenger crossover :)
Duhhh
Favorite channel!!
Thank you for this great series, please continue the history of Ethiopia and other African nations :)
Amazing story, I had no idea of historical alliances between these two countries (Portugal and Ethiopia).
Portugal had such a impact in the world.....
Wow, I never knew the Portuguese fought alongside Ethiopians. Well done.
Thank you for finally covering some of the historical battles in the horn of Africa. However, some of the info is not correct, the number of Turkish and Arab fighters on the side of the Adel sultanate is exaggerated. Most of the Army of Adel were predominantly Somalis, Afar and small number of other locals. For more info, please check the eye witness testimony one the Yemeni soldiers book called Futuh Al-Habasha: The Conquest of Abyssinia.
Love when more obscure histories are covered!
Now this is marvellous
Legendary Portuguese age of discoveries...
Representation done right. Instead of lazily inserting africans in European culture and history, you guys actually made the effort of researching making a documentary highlighting an African empire. Much respect
Yes. I’m black and hate when they just randomly add black people into European history. It looks so stupid
there are Africans that were in european history and culture lmao and y’all literally try to lie about ancient Egypt being white or Arab so i don’t want to hear that
i have been a follower and fun of this channel and i am so happy that you have cover a great chapter in my county's history in such great detail thank you very much
Thanks for demonstrating Portuguese/Ethiopian history
It was biased history not accurate.
@@samizakariya5155 It's not a book about it, but, it's a good summary
The history of Ethiopia is incredibly fascinating. The XIV - XVI centuries are full of dramatism and great victories. P.S. What about Portuguese in XV-XVI in the Indian Ocean? They were like tigers, few but extremely dangerous.
You forgot Somalia
Woahhhh
Amazing video!
I love all your videos but these are highly educational and entertaining
I had no idea about this aspect of Portugal
Kings And Generals: likes are 100 times the dislikes. This shows your hard work
Wow! Didn’t realize Portugal was such a wrecking ball to the Ottoman empires ambitions.
Yup, before they got beat out by Spain, France, Britain and The Netherlands; Portugal dominated much of the world in some way or another
Portugal even got involved in the later years of WW I by sending 50.000 troops.
@@mehdiaridhi203 Not really, while Portugal became part of a personal union it did not lose its empire. Large parts were later conquerd by the Dutch but the battle of the three kings wasn't the direct cause of this
@@abthedragon4921 lol Portugal
@Edward Penishands Battle of Nicopolis haha
Thanks for highlighting these wars, it’s amazing how so much of this has been untold and forgotten.
A mistake in the video "900 Turkish and 2000 Arab soldiers..."
While the video shows 200 Turkish infantry and 900 Arab infantry
At first I was like, damn what you mean sizeable?? loll
A mistake also said 1524 instead of 1542 at around the 14:00 mark
That's inaccurate, there were few Turkish musketeers and few Yemeni fighters, but nothing in the ranges mentioned. Most of the Adal soldiers were predominantly Somalis, Afar and other locals, you can look up more on the eye witness of the event in a book called fatahul habesh/ opening of Abyssinia.
@@boqorbeerta8780 no there were many Turkish troops too you can see the drawings of the abyssinians there were many arabs on the adal side
Hi, great video! If you could in the near future make a video of Afonso de Albuquerque’s conquests. What he achieved in the Indian ocean is truly unbeliavable! Keep up with the excellent work!
He failed in capturing the Somali coast though as he was constantly defeated by the Ajuran empire
this channel is a gem
Great video again nice.
Finally, King and Generals never disappoints
I am guessing here but are you Ethiopian? Because your profile pic is the picture of Emperor Halislsa the last Emerpor of Ethiopia

@A venti dble chchlate chip frappucino Nah he's right. THere's only one pov being used and it's from the Portuguese side. This is a very biased video.

Well they did have guns.
Im sure one solider of today from any country with guns could easily make the difference against 100k plus armies
@@darklight8338 The opposite side had them as well, as such, that is hardly an appropriate assessment.
They were able to train and equip the native warriors.
@@SylvaHodracyrda yes the opposite side had trained gunmen too what's your point though?
@@tewekdenahom485 My point is the armies were balanced in terms of weaponry, what’s so hard to understand?
