So, my favorite thing about the canopy breach is that it shows you why you have sounds in space... or, rather, that you don't actually have sound in space, but your cockpit simulates sound for situational awareness. When that canopy breach happens, the cockpit can't simulate sound anymore. As such, the only sounds you're left with are the sounds that result from things in direct contact with your ship. This makes sense, as sound can still travel through the ship itself into you. Better, is that they make sure to have what sounds you can still hear appropriately dampened as a result.
The whole game is filled with this kind of attention to detail and forethought. What's a mark of how well they do this is that people actually complain the game has no depth, simply because all of the game's various subsystems are so well integrated together that you legitimately don't notice how much work has gone into them. The canopy breach is one such system, but my personal favorite is how the way your ship handles heat affects how easy you are to scan and target which naturally leads to a stealth mechanic that not enough players even know about.
Example, I do smuggling runs from time to time. The way I do this is by dropping out of FSD (warp, basically) far away from the station then turning off everything on my ship but the thrusters and life support. Then I get into position, aimed towards the opening of the station, turn off flight assist and burn in the direction of the station. Once I hit about 100 m/s, I turn the thrusters off entirely and just let my ship coast toward the station. My ship's heat drops so that even if someone saw my ship they still wouldn't be able to target it let alone scan my cargo. Once I get within 3km of the station, I turn on my sensors and quickly request docking permission. Once I have that, I quickly turn on my thrusters and turn off my radiators (as the heat from the thrusters will cause the radiators to glow almost immediately) and maneuver into the station and to my docking pad.

    • @suspectedcrab
      @suspectedcrab 4 ปีที่แล้ว +91

The cockpit is still simulating sounds even when the canopy is breached. But like all other sounds, it is severely dulled due to only having the medium of your ship and your body (including helmet filled with oxygen) to travel through. You can hear the ship's voice the loudest for obvious reasons.

@@bobthestringbuilder7861 I'm referencing the ship's simulation of sounds which is a separate system.., not objects intersecting with the ship, or the sound of the drive already in the ship which would pass through the ship and into you. Windows serve an important purpose, even if you don't want to accept that. Sensors can be faulty, destroyed or give wrong readings. Windows offer a backup solution. They would only be used in times of emergency and could be very small and in an akward place, but they are still there.
It's the same reason a military vessel on earth always has a set of paper maps of the operations area, a set of sextants and analoge navigation equipment and a crew that can use those. In case you loose your navigation systems and need to rely on the stars and paper maps, it's important to have these.

One of the biggest problems in flying those is that the canopy has the highest chance of failure during combat than any other ship. It's not a matter of if, but WHEN they'll break. I got so used to it happening that I pretty much expected it and timed every engagement accordingly to the mercy of the ship's allowable life support system duration.

So like i said solution is just to SRV and relog. For the most part from a game mechanics stand point there is no need to use anything more than a E rating. Unless your minmaxing your weight and power, at which point you just disable it and only turn it on to refresh the timer. If you're just running combat in the bubble, 5 mins and a synth or two is more than enough to make it to a station.

'a small tank of backup oxygen'
My friend. 26 ml is 0.8 fluid ounces. That is not a 'tank'. That is the little paper cup you dip your french fries into at McDonalds when you want some ketchup.
The Life Support modules in ED have always been the more absurd silly things in the entire game. Doubling the tonnage for every tier up, with the only difference being the emergency O2 supply goes from five minutes, to fifteen minutes, to thirty minutes.
26 ml is what the average human body consumes in five minutes. 156 ml would be what it would consume in thirty. A little over 5 ounces. Anyone really want to tell me you need an additional sixty tons of life support equipment to store a fist full of ketchup packets?
This is one of those things where Frontier Dev decided to just ignore reality for the sake of gameplay balance and put almost zero thought into it. Your cockpit canopy breaks, and the countdown timer starts. Doesn't matter if you could stash 48 hours of backpack oxygen in a canister bolted to the back of your chair. Life support couldn't have more interesting features, like keeping the cockpit from baking while the rest of your ship cooks when overheating, or the canopy acting as a radiation shield. I mean, how good a day do you think you'd have if your canopy busted in combat near a nav beacon two light-seconds off the surface of a G-type star while you're pointed at it? I don't think you'd really have time to ruminate on your O2 timer with how instantly flash-baked you'd be. Somehow, the canopy is transparent while being able to keep you from being incinerated.
Thus, I laugh at the absurdity of the life support module feature. It's a lead weight with a plastic cup's worth of O2 stored in it.

      The same happened to me
I was able to eventually find a button that allowed to cannibalize my other systems to get my trusters working it was more desperate as I saw a enemy ship slowly getting closer and closer to me as I was out of ammo and had no shields

one time my canopy got breached in a conflict zone, so i hopped back to the nearest station to repair. when i got there, i tried to request docking, but it wouldn't work - i think another system got damaged, sensors maybe?. so i was sat outside this station with my oxygen ticking down, unable to go inside. eventually i went inside anyway without docking clearance so that i wouldn't asphyxiate, then i got blasted by station defences. rebuy cost wasn't too big at least.

I think it's possible it was a bug or maybe the station didn't have any pads big enough for your ship when you were requesting.

Having a canopy break while the only closest Outpost lading port is occupied feels like going to the ER for a collapsed lung and having to wait because someone "kinda felt off" and took the only spot

literally that what happened to me, but i going to the worning station in the first and turn to other station in another system to fix that was very dramatic.

What i don't understand why some Players don't swap their E class Life support for a D class,
it's better in every way is by far ALLWAYS the lightest + it has a emergency O² supply of 7:30 minutes.

Had this happen in my Anaconda last night, if I hadn't D rated my life support I wouldve been dead and over 10 mil poorer, but that extra 2 or so minutes saved me.

While it gives something to do in the game. That you'd have an oxygen limit never made sense. If the life support systems can replenish the cabin air indefinitely then it could supply a pilots pressure suit indefinitely through a connection instead of a finite amount of time.

You get the oxygen reserves when your life support fails. You can manually turn off your life support in the modules screen and you’ll go on emergency oxygen

When I just started I decided to go to a combat zone in my brand new cobra. After a minute my canopy ceased to exist(along with most of my hull integrity) and I went to a nearest station where I was denied access. With 3 minutes to spare I was in panic. Went to the other station where I managed to land and repair with literally 2 seconds left. After that the first thing I always buy for a new ship is a life support)
