  • Imagine looking through a sort of magic window, and through that window, you see another person, life-size and in three dimensions. Project Starline is a technology project from Google that combines advances in hardware and software to enable friends, families and co-workers to feel together, even when they're cities (or countries) apart. No such thing as bad machines, only bad coders. Machines are faithful to do what a coder programs them to do. So long as we don't choose to bow down and worship them or otherwise put them in a position of authority over us ourselves they shouldn't suddenly spontaneously evolve a desire to rebel against their creators and enslave us. That fear projects humanity's own issues onto machines that don't have our ability to question how we're "programmed" and set ourselves up as the coder who decides what is right and wrong, what is true and false, etc. Machines can't develop the feared level of sentience on their own; their developers would have to make them that way. That said, if ever there was a way to do it by accident, it'd likely involve uploading ourselves and marrying ourselves to machines, including a Hitler-type, but that would still be the oops of a good machine stupidly carrying out the will of a Hitler-type. :)

      It will be possible in the future, but the ethics and legality around it will be the challenge. Like, if we have an AI doppelganger, would it have any rights? An extension of our own rights perhaps? And could those rights persist after death, so the AI can legally carry out our wishes long after we're gone? There's a lot to work out even aside from the technical aspects.

    It looked like just a really good representation on 2D than a holographic image. I mean they didn't show it looking from different angles at the same time, it was only the front view i.e. 2D the entire time. So I guess it isn't what I expected with a 'holographic' display. That being said, the quality and realism seemed exceptional.

    I wonder how much of the realism is created by the mirror box projection, lighting, and proper cameras? Could you achieve something half as good for 1/10th the effort and cost? The mirror box projection adds depth, just like old standup arcades that used it. Then projecting people at life size using a large screen contributes to realism. Finally, good lighting with a 4k camera image tops off the experience. That last piece, the 3D capture and rendering, how much does it add to the experience? Is it the last 1%, .1% or is it 50% of the experience?

    • @rsilvers129
      @rsilvers129 ปีที่แล้ว

      " Could you achieve something half as good for 1/10th the effort and cost?" Possibly better, depending on what the latency is. We had video conferencing in 1990 that had no perceivable latency, so that was already likely better than this.

      @JohnGottschalk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ummm, not at all!

    • @JohnGottschalk
      @JohnGottschalk 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Holograms *should* not exist in physical space, they *should* be an overlay on reality. The goal of AR glasses (augmented reality) and the idea of holograms is you could spawn them anywhere.
      Physical cube displays for 3D images have already existed for some time, they've just gotten nicer, and they're finding consumer level applications for them.
      This is just a physical cube display in 1 single space. So, in that room you will be able to see someone / objects in 3D without needing glasses, but it won't be transferrable outside that room.
      It's just a nice fancy screen that does a little more than your current screens, except much less portable.

  • @theawesomeman4622
    @theawesomeman4622 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I have family and friends all over this globe we live on. Having something like this (like ad a dresser mirror or something) one day would make a huge difference for me and everyone I know.
    I really hope this makes it to the consumer market.
    Since it does a 3d model of you I bet it could be possible to enable it for other uses (try on new haircuts/hair colors, try on cloths and glasses and makeup looks with tutorials for girls. Or new beard styles.)
    Heck it might even be good for a doctors quick visit or enable psychiatrist to meet up with patients who have anxiety and can't leave home easily or at all.
    I can imagine so many uses for such a tech.
