little fish I would love it, I would really love it. Seriously, when he came to Newcastle it was like nothing else. If the clown that currently owns it has sold the club he would come back in some capacity in a heartbeat.

I think we could have done without the opening comment which runs along the lines of, "playing against a team mainly made up of Nilssons and Jensens seemed to confuse Ron Greenwood's side.". Both Allan Simonsen and Frank Arnesen were fine players. Denmark may well have won Euro 84 had Simonsen not broken his leg in the opening game of the tournament.

Our good old Jensen/Nielsen trick was forgotten until we got 2 x Laudrup and made goalkeeping a Schmeichel-dynasty :-). Many sides have lost their ways in confusion about our innovative lineup-strategy. England should not feel ashamed about that :-)

First two England goals from Brooking via free kicks taken with different feet to suit the shape of the cross and I can't believe pros of today on the money they are paid can only use one foot.

My country Scotland made the World Cup in 1978 in Argentina. We went to Argentina and we were fancied by the media at the time that we may even get to the final. In typical Scottish style we lost 3-1 to Peru and drew 1-1 with Iran, the irony being we beat Holland 3-2 and they went on to the final losing to Argentina..🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I remember it well - at the English school I was at in 78 we were all backing Scotland - most of the players we knew well from the 1st Division clubs so it felt right to support them. Against Holland they showed their class and I am still baffled about what went wrong in those first two games what a nightmare. Sadly the Scots team today cant boast a single truly international player.

The laws have recently changed so that a handball goal, even if unintended should not count, which is fairly enough because you should not be allowed to benefit from it, even if unintentional.
I think you would be hard pushed though to convince anyone that Lachford's was intended and Maradona's wasn't and the latter should even have been sent off.

  •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Keegan was the nearest thing England ever got to having a Maradona of their own. What hope do England have of winning anything now when we couldn't win anything with these great teams of the past? Instead of Keegan we now have Deli Alli.

Such a tragedy that he (and Brooking) weren't fit in '82, although they did get half chances as subs in our final goal-less encounter with the hosts Spain. I was only a nipper and I couldn't get my head 'round how England (who were excellent in the first group stage) could exit the WC w/o losing a game. The rules were fair for all, but 3 way groups are crap (games can't occur simultaneously for one thing) and I'm glad FIFA eventually shit-canned them.

@@TwoOnions275 The 1982 failure sticks..it was the zenith outcome of the failure to appoint Clough and Taylor in 1977...England might have built a younger squad for '82' with cowans, morley, hoddle and a greater role for someone like ray kennedy (though i don't know if he was ill by then)

A good reason why Clough and not Greenwood should have been the England manager in this time..Greenwood's defence was all over the shop...he should rebuilt the defensive structure...Phil Neal out would have been a start..a problem that would really hit under England under Greenwood was changing formations...Clough would have done better with a crop of real excellence that started to emerge in the England game in this period alongside the likes of Keegan/Brooking..
