England 1-2 Scotland, International 1977 (Wembley pitch invasion)

  • The deciding match of the 1977 British Home Championship. If Scotland were to win at Wembley for the first time in 10 years, they would take the title outright. But it would be shared between England and Wales if the home team triumphed. What followed was a famous game and an even more famous celebration. John Motson is the commentator.

I was eleven in 1977 and MAD on football (grew out of it around 1986-87 when I moved from the North to the South West). I realise the game is faster now, goals are amazing, defenders are better, skills are amazing, players are way way fitter.....but here I am, watching this having not been interested in modern football for at least two decades, utterly compelled again because of Motson's voice, the players' names I remember so well and the characters, the physicality of it all and how visceral it was both on and off the pitch. The occasion, the atmosphere in those days was sooo HUGE. Going to football matches and being in a crowd like that are memories to cherish.
Dare as I say, being an England fan as a child back in the day (not now, couldn't give a shit), I was GLUED to the screen when this was on BBC1 that day....but the only thing I can remember is the crossbar snapping. Ha ha sorry!

I was on the pitch in 1975 after
      we lost 5 - 1.!
But it was all good natured and I honestly didn't see any fights or
      violence that whole weekend.
      Even Londoners seemed to find
it all a bit of a laugh .

It seems they were playing in Scotland. It is so amazing to see how proud are the Scottish, their pure love for their beautiful land. We do not have this in Italy, Italy for centuries was prevented by Catholic Church to become a united country and now we see the result of this: an "accrocco" of different counties with nothing to share but indifference when not hate. So impressive is to see the pride of Scottish as well as English, Irish, Welsh people. When they are in a stadium, it is fantastic to see and listen to them. Greetings from Rome Italy. March 2020

The reaction to the tackle by McQueen on Channon shows just how much times have changed. If that happened today, the players would be all over the ref, clamouring for a red card. As it was, only a foul given and Channon just walking away as if it was just part and parcel of the game then- which it was.

Saturday 4 June 1977 was the start of the long Spring Bank (put back by 1 week in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and put back by 5 weeks in Scotland too all in 1977) Holiday and Silver Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend combined when the England v Scotland home international at Wembley was played, this with John Motson the commentator here for the BBC which i remember very well watching this on BBC1, with my two older brothers cheering on England, while me and my late dad (who has Scottish ancestry) cheering on Scotland. I remember me (then 8 years old) and my dad having a good laugh after full time when Scotland won, and the Scottish fans celebrated victory by invading the pitch, digging up the Wembley turf and breaking the crossbar on one side of the pitch as it happens. My two older brothers were not pleased that England lost, but me (the youngest of three brothers and all three siblings altogether, no sisters) and my dad were pleased and happy that Scotland won on that day itself !

Glad to see the game again. Thanks for posting. My recollection watching it in my Manchester University days in the television room (!)was that it was pretty awful but condensed to a few minutes always makes things look better. Scotland much the better side but in modern parlance, Don Revie had clearly lost the dressing room. Certainly I regretted not joining my dad at the cricketing Old Trafford to see Colin Croft bowl Boycott all ends up for a duck. The resident policeman danced a jig shouting “ I’ve waited all my life for this”. Sorry for the cricket digression.
Every first division (Premier League for younger viewers) manager used to be there in those days at that fixture except the best of them, Bob Paisley who used to go to the races at Haydock Park.

One of the big internal gates was locked.
These 2 guys were working at Wembley, so they consulted the police and got their welding stuff from nearby and cut the hinges from the gates.
In next to no time we were all in safely and peacefully.
I always remember this because when I got back into London that evening I experienced my 1st £1 pint! When I questioned this I was informed it was due to the late Queen’s Silver Jubilee.
