  • Here is the last couple of minutes for the 1997 Canadian Grand Prix Qualifying Session. Jacques driving the Williams FW19 Renault (the best looking of the 90's Williams F1 car in my opinion) and Michael driving the Ferrari F310B.

      F1 fans, especially young ones don't understand just how difficult it is to win Indy CART series Indy 500 and the F1 title. Much more difficult than what Mansell did. And Mansell never won the Indy 500.

      That's not really true. They were far from dominate. This race is a good example Villnueve was a 100/th of a second behind pole, and his teammate is 9th on the grid. He was a great young driver. His heart was not into it after the first couple of years. After winning the Championship, I think he was sick of the politics of F1.

    Irvine 12th... 1.5 seconds behind Schumi....
    Irvine demonstrates how crap the 1997 ferrari was, Schumacher demonstrates how he's the best driver in formula 1 to be able to take pole in that thing.

    True F1 fans doesn't rely in only one driver. As a Senna fan myself (and brazilian), I find the early 2000s the true ending of F1's romantism. Mika Hakkinens championships were absolutely awesome to watch.

  • @vinrusso821

    I see comments that Villenuve just jumped in a unbeatable car. But it was huge when Mansell goes to the real dominate team in Newman Haus, and wins CART series.. Mansell raced Indy for 3 years, the other cars caught up. I like Mansell, but Villinueve's feat was much more difficult and historic.He was a young kid, never raced on the European circuits. He learned them from video simulators.Shumacher was his rival, but so was his teammate Damon Hill.

    Hakkinen was very fast, but dont forget in 98 and 99 he has one of the fastest cars in F1 History by far better then the Ferrari. Alonso was a real opponent, but Schumi was in the end of his main career and 37 years old. even today when you compare Hamilton/Rosberg duels and the last Season of Schumi you can see that he was extreme fast even in the age of 43.A NEAR thirty years old Schumi (97-98-99) is imo by far the completest driver in F1 History, he was outstanding with rubbish Ferraris

    Hakkinen's engine blew up from 1st place in Melbourne and 1st Sao Paulo, and 2nd place USA. These races went to Schumi for free. It is true that Schumi had bad luck + mechanical, but Mika had it too. San Marino Mika drove over an object in the track before the decisive pitstops, in Monaco he had brake cables loose under pedal and dropped 6th in the pits, and in Hock Macs were leadin 30 sec when a guy came to the track and pace car closed the gap. I think Schumi was better only by a small margin.

      Well, Irvine was never a fast driver. How do I know? His grand total of zero pole positions and 1 fastest laps in 148 starts is pretty far from impressive. Irvine managed 4 front-row starts in his career. Considering that he only managed 4 front-row starts it's fair to assume he was sitting in the fastest car when he managed them.
      4 front row starts seems pretty weak compared to Jarno Trulli who managed 15 front row starts (4 of them poles) with Jordans, Renaults and Toyotas. Trulli never sat in a top car. Fisichella managed 11 front starts and he put a Benetton on pole in 1998 and a Force India on pole in 2009 in Spa. Alesi managed 10 front rows with uncompetitive Ferraris and Saubers. Old man Berger managed 32 front row starts (12 of them poles) and 21 fastest laps when he raced against Senna, Prost, Piquet and Mansell in his youth and against Schumacher, Hakkinen, Hill and Villeneuve in his mid 30's.
      Do I even have to mention other contemporaries like Barrichello, Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher and the champions?
      When somebody like Thierry Boutsen spent more laps leading than Irvine and when somebody like Nick Heidfeld both has more poles and fastest laps, then Irvine isn't somebody you would use to assess your speed against.
      While the Williams was indeed the mostly the best car in 1997 (although only the 5'th most reliable as proven by laps raced in 1997) Irvine wasn't somebody you would want to be measured against. Period.

    • @Mformularacer
      @Mformularacer 9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Theodore Mosin Irvine was pretty fast before he joined ferrari. in the jordan in 1995 especially he destroyed rubens in qualifying. in fact people in 1995 believed schumacher was going to have a tough time having irvine as his team mate. irvine was not slow, schumacher made him look slow - which is not a shame for irvine, because schumacher was only outqualified 10 times by all his team mates put together in a ten year period from 1992 to the beginning of 2002. schumacher was simply a demon in that time.

    • @RowhiderRCRacing
      @RowhiderRCRacing 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Theodore Mosin Irvine was far better know for its bad facts in race and outer the circuit than for its speed. Just a number 2, nothing more

    • @Mformularacer
      @Mformularacer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      ***** it's not like salo was a rookie who hopped into the car and was immediately faster than his more established team mate. salo himself was rated a very good driver who never had the car to show for it.
      yes at hockenheim salo helped irvine win the race but in austria irvine beat coulthard in a straight fight in a significantly slower car.
      look i'm not saying irvine was world class but he was clearly a fast driver who lacked commitment. barichello was also utterly useless against schumacher in 2000 and 2001 whereas the avg gap between all team mates shrunk from 2002-onwards. irvine was very good pre-1996 and did well in the jaguar from 2000. the only time he looked ridiculously slow in his entire career was when his team mate was arguably the best of all time.

    • @speeddurango2662
      @speeddurango2662 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Irvine didn't do all of the above because his tenure in Ferrari when that team was not the fastest, it doesn't take a brain to work out that a mediocre driver doesn't take poles and set fast laps.
      Those who constantly mentioned Salo team order conviniently forgets that in all races they both competed in, Irvine had the upper hand. Shows how much brains they have again.
      Benetton was as competitive as Alesi, Berger, Johnny Herbert, and the likes, it only takes a brilliant driver to outdrive its potential. Design a car around one driver to win championships. I guess you are too smart the F1 teams hadn't figured out that part yet, otherwise these 10 or so teams should be winning driver championships each of them every year, while they just decided somehow, let's not do that, let Ferrari do that, these cheating scu*s they have number 1 drivers, we treat our drivers equals, we race our high grounds, so even if we're having a good car we're not going to favor a more competitive driver, that just to act in the good sportsmanship.
      You're good.
      And to say that Irvine was inferior to de La Rosa just shows not only are you running out of brains, you are full of s***. Irvine had 2 podiums while Pedro had none. Irvine scored 4 times more points than Pedro, and in qualifying Irvine also had the upper hand.
      You are just another one trying to say something to undermine another great driver, while saying lies, and illogical judgement and I mean, can you just resort to attacking drivers for their dirty acts, because these stats they just proved again and again a story completely otherwise.
      And one final note, What did Irvine ever do with a Jaguar for three seasons? Not only 2 podiums for an underdog team. Irvine was very impressive in Monaco.

    I know. My point wast that F1 is still very intense sport. It's not easy. And there are quite many number of good drivers. Regulations and rules have change'd a bit but still it is the King-class Automotorsport.

    • @felipetartas5434
      @felipetartas5434 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are wrong. Mika was a very talented driver on qualify. On the final of 1993 season, he took the Mclaren and qualify better than Senna on one track. Senna just couldnt believe this fact and check the telemetry to be sure about Hakkinen lap because Senna was very sure about his lap time. He just didnt made any mistake, the real true is, Mika Hakkinen, beat him this day. And why? because he was very fast to this. Schumacher have a big number of victories and too many records, but, when you look to poles, to a man that won 7 champioships is a small number. You cant say Mika was slower than Schumacher when Mika drove just another car. But for me is enough when Mika can equal Senna on qualifies, the best on this challenge. Mika Hakkinen was just a unlucky guy, many years on Mclaren real not competitive cars.

    Well in the first 3 races. Mclaren was faster, taking pole in all 3 and locking out the front row twice by relatively comfortable margins. In Britain Rubens barely took pole, and all he did was hold the mclarens up all race before eventually retiring. Schumi could have won in spain, if not for the pitstop + tyre problems.
    Rubens did not win a single gp in 2000 until he struck gold in hockenheim. In almost every race he finished half a minute behind the mclarens but Schumi was always with them.

    @Mformularacer 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    As I said Mclaren still had a faster overall car in 2000. Rubens always finished 30 seconds behind the mclarens but Schumacher always stayed with them.
    Also in 1998 Mclarens locked out the front row almost every race and finished almost every race they won 30-40 seconds ahead of the next non-mclaren. Yet Schumacher still took the title down to the last round when he and Mika had almost the exact same amount of mechanical failures.. I think Schumi in the 98 mclaren would have been like 2002.

    • @Deniz1923
      @Deniz1923 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If not for the incident with Coulthard @ Spa, MS would've won the title in '98. In '99 too surely, if not for his injury. I think those two were his best seasons, him manhandling those Ferrari's were something to behold. This coming from someone who doesn't like MS.

    Murray Walker sempre foi um tremendo fanboy do Schumacher, de torcer pelo alemão mesmo. Não que a volta não tenha sido incrível mesmo, mas em outros tempos, quando o Senna destruía os rivais colocando mais de 1s de vantagem, este mesmo narrador parecia ficar em clima de velório. Não sei o motivo dessa mágoa, talvez pelo Senna ter vetado o Warwick na Lotus, ou talvez pelo brasileiro ter batido o Mansell tantas vezes.
