  • Having trouble with those late takeoffs?! LETS FIX THAT!
    Before we get started, know that this is a VERY IN DEPTH look into taking off on hollow barreling waves. This isn't something you can learn in 5minutes, or even the 26min in this video, so I dove into as much as i could explaining everything you need to know, to improve your take offs, and get more barreled. It works for me, and I hope it can help you too!

      @@brettbarley Hey Brett, Im 6'5 and even though ive been surfing shortboards and in general for a few years now, I still struggle to pop up without using my knee a tad when surfing a shortboard, which is a massive hinderance. I can however do it on my big thick longboard, do you have any tips between making that transition? I find it hard to unfold my lanky legs haha

    • @brettbarley
      @brettbarley  5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@sambowden890 It's just a matter of practice and repetition. Once you do something enough, you're bound to improve. Try riding a shorter board in smaller waves first... compared to a longboard, you have to be super quick on your feet to get up and ride the wave with speed. So even though it may not be as fun as longboarding small waves, it'll force you to learn to pop up quicker.

    Brett - thank you so much for making this video tutorial! As I was watching this I can’t tell you how many times I had that “ah ha!” moment. So helpful and informative. I cant thank you enough for your time and advice. Keep posting these man we really appreciate it!

    Agree with everyone here in that this was one of the most useful tutorials I've seen but what made it even better was showing some of the take offs not made. I hate not making take offs so often I will choose the safer option, which means missing out on possibly the best waves. Seeing that even the best take a fall is actually encouraging and has fired me up to take more risks on the take off. Great work.

    Brett... I can't begin to explain how much this video has helped! I realize now how I've been approaching most barreling waves from the wrong angle.. figuratively and literally! I've never seen it explained like this before and I've watched a lot of how to vids on barrel riding. Can't wait to hit my local break tomorrow with this newfound insight. Thanks dude! You have my sub :)

    I watched this video and had the best day in a big Dominical swell. I got a late drop with a short barrel. I let go of the rail and got worked. When I came back to watch it again, Brett said do not let go of the rail. Thanks! I will try again. This was a game changer for beach breaks for me.

    Legendary tutorial. Something I notice I do on really critical sections is lean forward and force my nose down hard to initiate the drop more quickly before weighting the tail with my back toes to knife.... Loved you mentioning about not leaning forward into the foamball so you can climb over it. I think that definitely still gets me sometimes. Precise explanations and mental barrels. Thank You!

    I'M SO IMPRESSED WITH EVERYTHING YOU DO. I've been surfing for a while now and this tutorial helped me understand why I do some of the things I do, and how to improve my overall surfing. This tutorial is better than anything else I've watched. Thanks for taking the time to put this together for all of us. If you're looking for another topic to cover, I'd love to know more about bailing in a closeout and overall bailing. I don't know how I bail half the time, I just do what feels right. But I'd love to have more clarity on how to bail safety. If you don't cover that, NBD! I'll just keep sucking in water until I figure out what works. Haha. Thanks again for this video!

    Thanks for this video I learned alot. As a new surfer it felt natural to grab my rail on backside to make my turn and it was interesting to hear you say the same thing. My dream since I was a kid was to get inside a barrel. 8ft foamy last year now a 6'6" swallow tail. Got my first 6 foot wave during the most recent NC Hurricane Larry.

    This is such a great video. I was down at Rodanthe on Saturday morning and the only reason I made the left was this video. That grab-the-rail technique for backside steep drops is a game changer. It has totally transformed my confidence on taking lefts on heavier days. Thanks for posting this!

    One about types of waves (peaks, lines) and how it affects the take off would be great.
