I was reading an autobiography by someone who had dinner with him once and he said it was just extraordinary. He would have a sip port, then a mouthful of food, then a sip of champagne, a puff on his cigar, more food, then more champagne, he never seemed to stop. But what he also noted was that Churchill never seemed to stop talking as well. He was baffled how he managed to achieve it.

Churchill was a sly alcy. Those "little" eye-openers in the morning we're probably to stave off withdrawal, but seemed innocent enough because they were just a tipple. Progressively drank more throughout the day, nap mid day because you know you can't drink the whole day and stay up until midnight without other substances or a nap.
Definitely a functional alcoholic. That he lived as long as he did wasn't because he didn't drink a lot. Just lucky. For every Churchill there's a Christopher Hitchens who actually does get the cancer or liver damage or heart attack/stroke.

you can’t drink like Churchill unless you eat like him too. You’re besotted by lunch - but to a trained alcoholic on a 4kcal+ daily diet, this is a light day of drinking.
Essentially like… what, 8-10 drinks? Usually bad if done everyday like Churchy, but in general, 8-10 drinks over 14 hours should be an almost imperceptible level of intoxication.
Church probably just rode a steady low buzz for his entire life, and that’s how he stayed comparatively/relatively stress free and lived to 90.

I don't know if the story is apocryphal, but I read somewhere that one pint champagne bottles were made exclusively for the British market, but French producers continued bottling some of their output in this size throughout the occupation as a sign of defiance (and presumably as a vote of confidence that the market would return in due course). Churchill expressed his preference for one pint bottles based on his judgement that a standard 70 cl bottle is too much for one person to have with lunch, but not enough for two (which is a good call IMO).

    • @MrHrman12

@@MrHrman12 I'm teetotal now, but back in my drinking days I certainly found 1/2 bottle each to be a bit parsimonious. You'll only get around four decent sized flutes from a 70 cl bottle, which means only two proper glasses each - enough to slake a thirst, but not quite enough to satisfy! So when you go to top up your glass, you find the bottle is empty, which is rather sad and inhospitable (especially if you're entertaining a lovely woman). However, opening a second bottle at this stage might result in your getting more tipsy that frisky, if you know what I mean 🙂

This might be just me, but I’d imagine maybe Churchill started off weaker in the very start of the morning with what’s basically just whisky flavoured soda water but then got progressively more neat as he went on. Or perhaps he just drank it extremely weak all day because he knew he was going to get pissed all the same anyway on a variety of all the drinks he was having, and maybe drinking it as essentially just watered down whisky flavoured soda water was his version of drinking water. I mean we know water wasn’t as great back then and people weren’t as healthy when it came to regular hydration so my theory would be that he wasn’t keen on tap water and instead like to drink his water carbonated with a whisky twang and that’s why he drank so many of those ‘whisky sodas’ as just his go to refreshment.

Well 2 things. 1, Churchill was a big man. Having extra weight helps reduce the effects of alcohol and helps you metabolize it faster. You seem like a fairly average sized guy so I would say Churchill probably had 50 or more pounds on you easily. 2. He was a long time drinker. As with everything the more you do it the better we get at it. At the point in his life you are referencing he had been a heavy drinker for years and years. This is an assumption but I am doubtful you drink even one drink daily.

based off what he says in this video, assuming he had a couple of double brandies or so after the evening champagne, and that 3 whisky mouthwashes = one 25ml shot of whisky, i worked out that churchill had around 23-25 UK alcohol units over the day..

For the very small amount of drinks in the morning, the body should be able to more than easily process that if you keep it at a drink per hour. Afterwards the other bigger drinks might be a bit of a problem but tolerance does get built up over time. I will say, he probably was not acting sloshed like this guy is by 6pm.

If I had to guess, all of the drinking of champagne and soda water was a method to treat indigestion that he probably had for being overweight. He probably suffered from Gerd or acid reflux and back then they didn’t know what it was but he had found out as I did years ago that drinking something like a Coke or a Pepsi or in his case just soda water helps the digestion tremendously. He just like to put a little bit of scotch in there because it made it like a cocktail rather than just bland soda water is my guess. And Champagne is probably a lot more enjoyable to drink with dinner then plain soda water.
It was very common back then to have an apéritif before dinner and a cognac afterward so that doesn’t surprise me that he would follow those traditions nor would it have surprised me that he would have a glass of wine or whatever during meals.
He was also a noted cigar smoker which also gives you bad indigestion in a lot of cases. I used to work for two different people that smoked a lot who both ate baking soda right from the box with a spoon to treat their indigestion and heartburn. So again he may not have realized exactly why this diet of soda water was helping him but I do think he was using it because it made him feel better.
These are the explanations that best make sense to me anyway.

    • @dlxmarks
      @dlxmarks 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

The Unseen As you may already know, worldwide demand for Scotch grew immensely after WWII especially in North America and the big blenders adjusted usually by adding more grain whisky because ramping up single malt production is a long and expensive process. As a result, most blends probably don't have as much character as they had pre-war. That said, I agree that some blends are quite good especially from the smaller craft blenders because they don't skimp on the single malts.

Interesting note from the Churchill Project at Hillsdale College, Michigan winstonchurchill.hillsdale.edu/whisky-or-bourbon/
"Most biographers name Johnny Walker Red as the Churchill standard (well diluted with water, which is why he seemed to drink so much with no apparent effect). He did use Johnny Walker Black on occasion, and we have owned a copy of Churchill’s book Into Battle inscribed to Sir Alexander Walker, with compliments on his “national brew.” In the 1950s an appraiser for Hatch Mansfield, Churchill’s wine and liquor agent, was sent to assess the Chartwell wine cellar. He pronounced it a “shambles,”except for cases of Pol Roger champagne, vintage Hine brandy and Johnny Walker Red."

If he's mixing it then it doesn't matter what it is. However when I have tried vintage whiskies, even cheap blended ones it is obvious they used to be higher quality.

If we could know how many of the “socially successful” people get a chemical boost (not considering caffeine or tobacco) , our entire scale of moral values regarding drugs would shake badly. Alcohol, Marihuana, benzos, antidepressants, stimulants (from cocaine to all sorts of amphetamine-like derivatives).
