I was heartbroken when the Jam split, mainly because they hadn't been to Australia,I was in my last year of school and was a massive fan, they got me into the whole mod thing,I just loved them .I saw the style council ,Weller solo and from the Jam,but saddly never saw the Jam.

OOh, I get a pang in my heart thinking about those albums, buying them (first All Mod Cons and quickly after ITC and TMW) from Boots in the Whitgift centre Croydon. rushing home to play them and learning all the songs off by heart (lyrics in any case). They were everything I identified with, the best 3 piece band ever. When you saw them live, they created a fourth element and I never wanted it to end. I feel lucky to have been born in early 66 and was alive when they were happening. Thanks guys.

I remember when I first put in All Mod Cons, it blew my little mind! Then setting sons. I must have listened to Wasteland a million times as a kid!

"Saturdays kids live in council houses in their v- neck shirts and baggy trousers....think of Edward still at college receiving letter he doesn't acknowledge...we are Up on the Hill playing little boy soldiers...we're no longer as thick as thieves. I still listen 👂 to the Jam often, my older brother turned me onto them back in around 1979 when he came back from England doing submarine training in pompy, where we are from, he was in the Australian navy, I immediately related to them as I’m a huge Beatles fan, along with the Kinks and the Who, they were exo! Just what I needed musically! So it was an honour to return the favour to him to be able to treat him to the show! I always looked up to my older brother even though, to him I was the spoiled annoying baby brother ! I still do. I hope they do get back together for an album and tour! I don’t think it would ruin there legacy if done properly! I know Weller never looks back! So if done correctly, it doesn’t need to be a backwards thing! More a celebration of their past with a knew forwards sounding album! Come on Paul Weller, before it’s too late! Do it for You, Bruce and Rick, and us! If done properly, it would be huge! Ps, and bring the show to Australia! You all have a big following here! I think you might be pleasantly surprised! I know I would be. What a great group! Thanks lads. 😎😊👍🎶👋🙏🎵
Could never understand why everyone dissed that album, it's got some great tracks on there, The Combine, The Weekend Starts Here, Life from a Window, Tonight at Noon. Brilliant LP. Out of their 2 albums in 1977, TITMW is my favourite of the two. Not as aggressive as the debut but better structured songs.
The power and drive these three guys generated was just incredible. Imagine if Weller was to join Bruce and Rick on stage for one last Jam gig. Their impact of a whole generation of people cannot be underestimated. Anyone around at the time remembers The Jam....

Hardly surprising really, the interviewer was none other than Gary Crowley. Gary has been pretty much intimate with The Jam, from around 1978/79 onwards, also has a fair bit of inside knowledge of them through being around them all those years, right up until their demise in 1982/83. They all know him well anyways and, it's well documented that he use to be a very close friend of Paul Weller especially.

I’m so over the moon to have seen this in the TH-cam list. Bruce is a great name, it’s not my first name but it’s the nickname I picked to use from teens because of Bruce Foxton, my son’s middle name is Paul, and my brother’s name is Rick, yep Jam fans supreme in our family and rightly so - what a brilliant band from start and now too. Going Underground is and will always remain one of my top 5 favourite songs. I love to shout it out especially when the government messes up, yeah you got it, daily. Down in the Tube Station - Bruce on "lead bass" which made the song what it was, one of the Jam's best ever tracks.. reminds me of Entwistle's contribution to The Who. All great bands need great musicians, and the Who had them, as did the Jam, so why did Weller split the Jam ? Why didnt Townshend or Daltrey split the Who, why didnt Bono split U2, why DID Morrissey split the Smiths.. who knows ?? some people are just born competitive and arrogant and want to do it all by themselves, others appreciate collaboration and collective and productive mobilisation of skills. It is a shame that after all this time, Bruce is still having a pop at Yes and ELO. Music styles turn on a penny, you get your three or four years as New and your old hat, whoever you are. Growing up in the 70s and 80s - we were blessed to have such a great turnover of music - form Glam, Rock, Punk, New Wave, Ska, New Romantic and 80s pop. Love it all
Don’t think anything Weller did subsequently can be compared and don’t think he ever wanted to. The Jam were of their time, had a different vibe, speaking to so many of the youth of Britain etc. My very first gig was at Wembley for the farewell tour. Style Council and Weller’s solo career was a great period. Beautiful lyrics, melodies, humour and soul and experimenting. I’ve loved all Paul Weller’s eras and so glad I can remember The Jam as they were. He remains one of the finest songwriters of the 20th and 21st century. He’s not ‘good’, he’s brilliant.

Utter bollocks - 'struggle against oppression'. Weller wrote great protest lyrics sure but they earned him millions of £££ and still do to this day. Billy Bragg the same (although not as rich as Weller). It's easy to be a working class hero when you are filthy rich.
Good interview, but more questions about the personal breach with Weller would have been interesting. There's something that went on there that hasn't ever really been explained.
I suspect money was the main issue. Weller doing most of the writing etc. Weller is the one who could probably explain it best and most honestly but hasn't /doesn't want to.

I remember his dad, the band's manager when it broke up, a few years back in an interview carping ill temperedly about how his boy was doing "all the work" & the other 2 were freeloading off his work. I'm not sure that was true, Buckler has recently come out & said it wasn't & that he & Foxton were more creatively involved with the act's song-writing than people have been led to believe. I suspect that Weller - possibly at the behest of his dad - "did a Morrissey", i.e. got too big-headed, thinking he was bigger than the band, & got greedy over dividing up the money, & wrecked the act as a result. If that's the case it explains why he's so vague in explaining it, as it's not something that you'd really want to admit to is it.
@@Horizon344 Weller is a great songwriter but he was never a great musician... all those bass lines and drums could not have been written by Weller alone. His guitar skills are up to par compared to Bruce and Rick's skills.
Is this interview after Rick left FTJ? I believe there was a fallout due to Bruce playing on a Weller record. If this is 4 years ago as it alludes then it would appear they are good again which is how we would want it to be. Alternatively this could be from when Rick was still in FTJ it’s hard to tell looking at them as Bruce never alters.
Shame Paul Weller has such disdain for his former bandmates. If you were lucky enough to see them live, I envy you. Paul has made it clear he will never play with them again.

The Jam were the best and don't dismiss the beauty of the Style Council. I gather the guys went to Woking High and I tried to enrol there for that reason (and I was kicked out of home in Welwyn Garden). Paul has an exquisite voice like Elvis Costello. They are brilliant singers

I still find it strange how Weller still really dislikes Rick ..... Rick seems a lovely bloke and everybody speaks very highly of him....the total opposite of Paul. Nobody ever mentions what the heck went on between them.
It's probably because Paul blindsided the other two by ending the band at the peak of their success. This must be an old video. Bruce and Rick had a falling out when the latter left From The Jam.

Would've been the BEST move if Paul had reunited every few years with Bruce and Rick to make a new JAM album and tour. Then Paul does a couple solo albums and tours. Then another JAM album and tour. Etc. Etc. Keep the LEGACY of THE JAM going. THAT should've been Paul's move. Unfortunately, Paul had other ideas.

They had a falling-out which, sadly, exists to this day. On Foxton's part, not Buckler's.

I remember his dad, the band's manager when it broke up, a few years back in an interview carping ill temperedly about how his boy was doing "all the work" & the other 2 were freeloading off his work. I'm not sure that was true, Buckler has recently come out & said it wasn't & that he & Foxton were more creatively involved with the act's song-writing than people have been led to believe. I suspect that Weller - possibly at the behest of his dad - "did a Morrissey", i.e. got too big-headed, thinking he was bigger than the band, & got greedy over dividing up the money, & wrecked the act as a result. If that's the case it explains why he's so vague in explaining it, as it's not something that you'd really want to admit to is it.
@@Horizon344 Weller is a great songwriter but he was never a great musician... all those bass lines and drums could not have been written by Weller alone. His guitar skills are up to par compared to Bruce and Rick's skills.

Is this interview after Rick left FTJ? I believe there was a fallout due to Bruce playing on a Weller record. If this is 4 years ago as it alludes then it would appear they are good again which is how we would want it to be. Alternatively this could be from when Rick was still in FTJ it’s hard to tell looking at them as Bruce never alters.
Shame Paul Weller has such disdain for his former bandmates. If you were lucky enough to see them live, I envy you. Paul has made it clear he will never play with them again.

The Jam were the best and don't dismiss the beauty of the Style Council. I gather the guys went to Woking High and I tried to enrol there for that reason (and I was kicked out of home in Welwyn Garden). Paul has an exquisite voice like Elvis Costello. They are brilliant singers

I still find it strange how Weller still really dislikes Rick ..... Rick seems a lovely bloke and everybody speaks very highly of him....the total opposite of Paul. Nobody ever mentions what the heck went on between them.
It's probably because Paul blindsided the other two by ending the band at the peak of their success.

Weller should bury the hatchet. Theses guys are sharp. Honestly, apart from two or three songs Weller’ body of work after TheJam were monumental. Style Council, was derivative pop.

You can make a bigger list of Stones songs 64-69 to at least equal that list (8 number 1 singles). I love the Jam (saw them 5 times) but needs to be said.
Would've been the BEST move if Paul had reunited every few years with Bruce and Rick to make a new JAM album and tour. Then Paul does a couple solo albums and tours. Then another JAM album and tour. Etc. Etc. Keep the LEGACY of THE JAM going. THAT should've been Paul's move. Unfortunately, Paul had other ideas.
