  • This road is notorious for driving to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, but has become a headache for some, as there is an alternative tarred road via Upington. The road is definitely not one of the best maintained, but it does provide a slower and more scenic drive to the park.
The road from Kuruman is well maintained, until you turn left towards Van Zylsrus. Here the road becomes narrow, and has some potholes. The road is tarred to Van Zylsrus, where you turn left on the gravel road towards Askham. The gravel is not as bad as other roads we have travelled and with reduced tire pressures and lowering your travel speed, it is actually a lovely road. It does have some serious corrugations from time to time, and after it has been graded, the road does become slippery due to loose sand. After Askham the road is tarred again to the Park. It is a slow travelling narrow road with a lot of sharp turns to look out for.
0:00 - Kuruman to Van ZylsRus turn (73km)
    3:23 - Travel to Van ZylsRus (96km)
    7:48 - Van Zylsrus town
8:03 - Start of Gravel Road to Askham (148km)
16:25 - Right Turn on Main Upington Road (13km)
17:05 - Road to Twee Rivieren Rest Camp (60km)
19:56 - Arrive at the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Hi, we would recommend it. Also towing a Conqueror Companion, and never had issues. Close to Van Zylsrus there is a beautiful Campsite called Leeu Pan Guest Farm, and Askham also has a Caravan Park. If you need a stopover in Kuruman(close to Kuruman) then have a look at Red Sands Country Lodge. August has nice warm days, but still gets very cold at night. Very nice time to be in the Park.
