Portraits with the Godox V1 Roundhead Speedlight (Flashpoint Zoom Li on X)

- The awesome people at Pergear sent me the Godox V1 Roundhead Speedlite (Flashpoint Zoom Li on X) to review.
I did an off camera flash portrait session with my homie from high school's daughter.
I love the fact that the head swivels 360 degrees with ease. The round head gives a more even and round spread of light. It does High Speed Sync (HSS) up to 1/8000 second, has TTL and works as a master and a slave and much more. This roundhead speedlite is great for portraits, on or off camera. It's a competitor to the much more expensive Profoto A1 Speedlite.

Thanks brotha I have the same set up and I love it ! I couldn’t find anyone on TH-cam that actually use this flash off camera with a soft box! Enjoy watching it!
BAM!!! That’s wsup man. Thank you
exactly, looked for a while until i found this.
Thanks for this great video production Derrel! Very inspiring for this old guy!
Just got mine! Excited to see what it can do! Great vid. :)
Awesome. Thanks for watching
I have the same camera and I just bought the V1 flash. I will be watching all of your videos. I subscribed to your channel. I'm an amateur photographer and there's so much to learn just on the camera itself.
Great shoot, great demonstration. Thanks!
Love this light! Only flash I will bring with me to Vegas!
Very compact.
@@DerrelHoShingPhotography Sure is! Im traveling from the other side of the world. Cant get all my 600's with me then..hehe
That was dope Derrel. Thank you for sharing.
thank you for watching bro
Derrel....Your BTS videos are awesome dude. Love to watch how you work.
sean solina thanks bro
Great behind the scenes shots and samples. Thanks so much!!
Thank you
I think it would have been better to use an ND filter to get the shutter speed below the camera’s high speed sync. Then you wouldn’t have to work the speedlight so hard, it would speed up your work flow as you wouldn’t have as much recycle time.
That bag holding the light down tactic though💰
Awesome tips man 🤙🏼 just subscribed
Great shots, lovely model too
Thanks bro
Shots were amazing
Thank you
He’s back! 🙌🏼. Glad to see you back on here my bro. I know the wedding life and client work are keeping you busy, but I’m hoping to collab with you in the near future 🙏🏼
You know it. I wish I had more time to do videos. But yeah a collab would be dope in the future
Beautiful ! Thank you for sharing your photoshoot
Brilliant video. I am looking to purchase this flash and you have just convinced me 100% to get it. Fantastic results from your images you my friend have amazing talent and model is beautiful. Subscribed.
Thanks dude. Much appreciated
Inspiring and informative video. Thanks for this.
thank you. glad you liked
Great work. Thanks for sharing.
Great work!
Great captures! Also nice informative video. Just picked up the V1S this past weekend so I'm learning to use a flash slowly but surely
Nice. It’s a decent flash
Geeeeeez mans got some crazy shots, eh? Your setup was proper!
Got hype when I saw STC in the background as well. Subscribed!
Dun know
this was fire my man!
the model, the lighting, everything was top notch!
Just when I was thinking Derrel hasn't posted in the while... Very good video!!! Might grab this flash... Or a second AD200 Pro.
Ha I’m back baby
Nice shots and model did good. 👍
Thank you
Dude those shots are on fire. Your highschool bud has himself a natural model on his hands. Awesome video man, keep them comming. Cheers
Thank you. And yes he does 👊🏾
Great model and shoot and usually I’m not keen on the music but I was totally digging it.
Thank you. My homie Okito did the music.
That’s why your one of my favorite photographer👍🏽
MY MAN 🙌🏾
When using HSS or high speed sync, the speedlight is putting out a bunch of light pulses which draws a lot of power and creates heat. A HSS 11 second recycle time can be expected. 1/1 in HSS can overheat and cook the flash. Lesser manual settings are easier on it.
That’s the downside of this flash.
sick shots. I'm surprised how much I liked the look of the light even bare. that model is incredible, too.
Great job man, thanks. Really appreciate discussing your thoughts during the shoot and overlaying the settings!
Excellent video.
Thanks brotha
Cool video! Why exactly did you choose to use 1/40 shutter handheld? You didn't find some of the shots were a little blurry? Also, why f/1.8 as the focus point is so small...just curious...
Nice work
Thank you
Dope shoot. Great work! Keep it up 🔥
I see that you too had issues with the Godox V1 during your session. I have a Godox V1 and I'm having an issue with it not firing "sometimes" when I boost it up to 1/32, 1/16, or 1/8 intermittently. In order for it to work again, after I've taken a few shots and I've realized that it has not fired, I then have to hit the button with the flash symbol on the V1 in order to get it to fire again.
So I was wondering if this is a "well known issue" with these affordably priced V1c, or just isolated situation that I'm having with mine?
I am new to flash so I am guessing that it is me, but logically, it doesn't make sense to me when timewise, it is usually "longer than" the 1.5 seconds flash recycle time. I wonder if it is my settings.
NOTE: I shoot in Manaul flash mode in case this matters.
How do you get so much in focus at f1.8? that's sick!
welcome back brothergetting those sick shots.
Gracias Hermano
Nice video bro! Keep them pumping out!
Thanks fam
Dope d her hair made those shots pop!!
Thanks bro. I agree
Another great vid. Excuse my ignorance, but I'm surprised that something so small was able to overpower the sun like that. Impressive
Thank you. It was at sunset so the ambient light wasn’t as strong and I had the flash rather close to the subject
@@DerrelHoShingPhotography oh ok. Thanks for the reply
Damn y’all count fast. HAA. 6:25 that was about 6-1/2 seconds. Great work and surprisingly good results with it bare.
Damn. I do count fast lol. It was 8 secs lol ha
Derrel Ho-Shing Photography HAA. keep it flowing, my man.
Thank you bro for the awesome and visual BTS. Which softbox did you use? And how to mount V1 inside the softbox?
I usually use S-type bracket for my rectangular flashlight, V1 can’t fit in into those bracket..
Yes I meant to mention this in the video and forgot. I used an umbrella softbox and attached the plastic stand that comes with the flash to the light stand
@@DerrelHoShingPhotography Thanks Derrel. I didn't know that product existed.. hahaha Many thanksss.
Loved this!!!
Well Well Well......dope video bro.
Thanks my man. How you been?
Welcome back!!!
haha what's up?
Derrel Ho-Shing Photography I’m good bro! Just glad your back. That video is 🔥🔥🔥 btw.
@@shevydee1 thanks my dude. trying to get back in the groove.
Nice shots, looking forward to getting my A7iii in a few days, think I'll go for this flash as well.
Dope work sir..
Howard Pritchett thanks man

Naw real talk LOVE your vids and these images did satisfy!!...I saw a shot you did that I'm gonna try to reproduce...GREAT WORK as Always!!
Cant wait till you do a Wedding Workshop....Let me know, I'm there!
LOVE the model Red Dreads!!
Haha I got busy and lazy lol but thanks man. Let me see what you produce
Yea I need to double up, if you ever do a studio style shoot could you post the results?
Yes i will do a studio shoot with this.
That is crazy
The Profoto A1X is pricey but the recycle time is under a second even at full power.
In the last set you set flash to TTL? How does the sensor read information if its covered with the softbox? Great teamwork 🙌😎📸
Yo. loving the stalk a sensi blowing in the breeze inna yard. /// bless up!!!
Hahaha respect breddrin.
DUDE THANK YOU FOR YOU PHOTO INFO CARDS OMG!
More fire for your headtop
Hahahahahahahhaha
Dope video, my friend.
Regards from Portugal.
Thanks my friend. I’m going to contact you when we come out to Portugal. Would love to do a tutorial out there
I’m using the flash on manual for some reason I can’t go over 1/250 on my shutter speed?
Make sure your camera and trigger are set to HSS
@@DerrelHoShingPhotography thank you sir
Thanks for this video!!!
You’re welcome
Чувак ты крут! Модель красавица!
Great vid, I love the shots and your style of shooting, I have the v1 and have used it full power canon my timeframes were closer to spec.
Thank you bro
I got two from Adorama and both failed. Have you used yours much?
really? failed how? they got a new firmware update. perhaps that may help. Adorama has good cust service tho
Last November I set up a Flashpoint flash after a high school team won a championship. The flash failed I grabbed a canon speed light and got my shot.
That was the last time I used flashpoint
I switched to profoto and never looked back.
Mine would not fire because it was cold out like 28 degrees
Wow
Thanks
Very cool shots with the Good V1...... would like to know the distance of the flash
Thanks. The video showed the distance 🤷🏾♂️
Does the flash need a bracket when using the soft box? I am so interested in getting this setup!!
Yes it does. The S2 bracket
Dope video sir and at STC! Love it!
Thank you sir. STC represent
@@DerrelHoShingPhotography on another note I enjoy listening to you describe the equipment and the industry. I have no clue what most of it means but listening to you I feel like I'll become more knowledgeable. Keep makin them hits!
Haaaaa thanks Kev
These pics look great but you were testing an on-camera flash. Therefore, I was hoping to see how it performs with the flash actually on the camera.
It’s not just an on camera flash. It works off camera as well. I’ve done a video on on camera flash already. I didn’t find much difference with it on camera vs canon or nikon speedlites
Bellas fotos!!!! Felicitaciones 💪🏻
Gracias
Butta! Bro!
thanks g
super tuto ! just ordered a V1+X2 for my d750. i didn't know we could make such beautiful pictures with bare bulb.
i was previously intersted with the westcot rapidbox 66cm. It is quite expensive. your godox one looks nice and cheap. Did you use a grid to be as low as 1/40sec ? it looses lot of IL apparently.
isn't 80cm too big on field ? i found 66cm a nice size
Good stuff bro!
Dwight Smalls thanks my man
Just got a Godox X2T looking for inspiration, awesome images.
Its refreshing to see a youtube photographer who actually takes great photos. SUBSCRIBED!
Hey, the I’ve seen that EXIF data layout before, how are you doing it? Is it an app? 🙏
Thanks. It’s an app called Photo Summary
Congrats Bro on being a WPPI speaker! Welcome back!
Thanks man. Hope to see you there
Derrel, thanks for the video. Would the recycle times at full power be shorter if you weren't shooting HHS?
I’m gonna say yes, because HSS does drain you battery quicker. I should try it and show y’all. Thanks for the tip
Derrel Ho-Shing Photography thanks for your reply Darrel.
Nice Nice Nice Pictures👍🏼
Thank you
Fire 🔥
I dont know if I missed it but did you have the v1 in the softbox?
Great video! By the way, u remind me of M'baku.
HAHAHAHAHA that’s hilarious
@Derrel Ho-Shing Photography LMAO..
Keep up the good work, peace.
Peace
I hope this means we back
Oh we back
Thanks for the video, hows the V1 working out after all these years? I'm on the fence between this and the AD200 pro.
To be honest, haven’t used it much since using the Westcott brand. They got the FJ80 speedlite which I’ll be doing a video on shortly
Where did you get the cross body camera strap? Looking for one that's reliable... Thanks in advance.
Very nice! The picture you took at 10:37. How did you get the color so blue and dark in the background? Was this done in editing? You shot raw?
Thanks. This was all my settings. Not editing. It was darker out than seen in the video
Missed seeing your vids.
Thanks man. I’m back
Hey were can i buy the stand and the softbox
Nice work! Keep it up. Lots of fringing with this lens though (8:15 when you zoom in). Do you shoot on TTL mode?
Yeah the fringe you can fix in post. Nothing your client will notice. And I was on TTL for that shot
Damn your work always dope. I have the same issue with recycle time even at 1/16-1/32 power. Did recycle time slow down more than 5-10 seconds for you for you at the lower power settings?
I’ll have to experiment more with this flash. At 1/16 th it was fine. I’m going to play around more with it at full power
@@DerrelHoShingPhotography thanks for the reply brotha!
HSS will def chew more power and longer recycle times.
Indeed
Hey Derrel please. what kind of license do I need to to shoot outdoor with a modifier without getting in trouble with the law????
The law that says shoot til asked to leave. Most places as long as you are not on places you can shoot. If you shoot in parks, most times you have to pay a $150 fee. If you are shooting just one Speedlight you should be good. Now when you shoot 2-3 flashes it can be trickier if you don't have a lot of people with you. The other thing is not to shoot if there is clear well know landmarks then 5.0 might run up on you and ask for a permit. Oh one more thing you will have to watch for cops if you do abandon places that have signs to not trespass. Most times they will ask you to just leave after they check your id.
Please could tell me how you set your camera shutter speed higher than 1/250?
I have a Nikon d5300 and a Godox V1.
Dope vid. Love the shots at the end with patterned wall. When you were shooting 1/16 flash power what was your ss? 1/160? You mentioned ttl at that point.
Also, same problem, not compatible with the bowens type s bracket for my softbox but i was able to use macgyver one
Hey I don’t recall off hand, I’ll have to double check. Probably 1/160
I was just contemplating on getting this flash. Dope shots as usual!!! Thanks for the info in the video. Did you test out any other modifiers besides the softbox?
thanks. No haven't tried any other modifier as yet.
hi brother i test the v1 at full power output.....it recycle at 1.5 sec - 2.0sec maybe ur battery is not enough power ? i used the flash for wedding yesterday the battery life is good
I think maybe it overheated?
1/40 shutter speed ? I thought that was too slow and can probably contribute to camera shake? just asking
The flash freezes the subject
hello, you are the specialist but I think that in sunlight, at 1/40sec your camera is sensitive enough to see any motion of the girl. it would freeze it if background without flash was black, like 1/2000sec or with a ND filter.
Hi, are the picture edited after shot?
Hi there!! Thanks for the video 👍🏼
How do you set the v1 to high speed sinc when it’s in slave mode please?
I was gonna ask same question. Please let me know if you have any information
Dope D!
Thanks bro
Where can I get this umbrella?
Darrel, I want to shoot in HSS but in manual mode (not TTL). How to setup my X2T trigger and V1?
