Facts. I'm mixed, part Black/White too, and appreciate Joy-el's channel so much because of her representation. I don't think my hair is 4a/b but it's coarser than many other mixed girls I've seen, and a lot of the hair products I've tried to use over the years just didn't work for me, LOL. She's pretty and fierce! Her hair is everything.

You're adorable! I'm British and mixed race too. I'm always surprised that Americans are shocked when someone mixed has 4B or 4C hair. In the UK it's more common to find mixed race people with 4b or 4c hair due to the genetic trait just straight up being direct since African Americans do tend to have more mixed genetics along the line. Not all though, some. Hence why you have light skinned full black people there and so on whereas in the UK you either have dark skinned or like mid tone / brown black people here or mixed race people. We don't have the history the USA does with black people here. A lot of mixed race people here have Jamaican grandparents, first generation Jamaican/Brit parent due to the Commonwealth after WW11 - but the newer generation are more African? So it's like straight up black genetics and no mixed ones like African Americans. Hence why our hair type here for mixed people is probably tighter. It isn't always the case though.

I think we just had a lack of quality products/knowledge to keep 4C hair healthy several years ago.
Thank God for the natural hair movement b/c without it, I don’t think we would have sooooo many quality options now!

I spotted that MCR poster. I knew I couldn't have been the only black girl who was in love with Gerard Way as a teenager 😂😂 but that was one of the only good things about having a perm back in high school. It automatically gave you that "edgey emo" look due to how damaged and split it was 😭 I use to dye mine almost every other month too. Everyone thought I looked cool but my hair was fried asf! Been natural since 2014 and don't regret it one bit lol

Yup I started getting texturizers at 6 or so as well & starting transitioning my hair to natural again after my senior year of high school. Been natural for 14 years now!

Love this vid! Sooo... it was a traumatic hair falling out experience that caused me to do my first big chop too (yes FIrSt 🤦🏾♀️) as you said, that's why they call it a journey lol. And i truly wish it was "just hair" but afro textured hair has been, and continues to be, highly politicized. It's so important for ppl to see positive promotion bc that impacts overall beauty standards - and let's be real, those standards are old AF and racist AF. Keep being beautiful Joy-el - you're helping someone see your beauty reflected in themselves ❤
Instead of falling into the pressure of wanting to relax your hair you should just do some professional silk presses every now and then. It’s a lot healthier and you’d get the best of both worlds 💁🏽♀️

Thanks for taking the time to do this. I see a lot of similarities between your journey and mine (probably a lot of black/biracial girls). I just didn't have a jerri curl long as my beautician put it on top of my relaxed hair and ALL of my hair fell out. I got hard presses for most of my elementary through high school years.
I'm definitely not proud of how I looked in high school or middle school. I didn't figure out my style until college lol.

I've been natural for a while, but it's taken me a long time to figure out what's best for my hair type.
Even after you go natural and start doing what's right, it's a bit of a struggle if you're not use to taking care of it natural.
But you're doing it well your hair looks so healthy 👌
Trust me when I say that I've been watching your videos and they're inspiring. My daughter is mixed, and I've been taking care of her natural hair so she can grow up proud of it. I kinda went through something similar and I didn't have much confidence... I don't want my daughter feeling like that so I've been natural, and styling her hair natural, and making a point of always telling her how beautiful she is and paying specific compliments on her hair. She'll go run off and show people her hair style, and she gets compliments. It's a beautiful thing to see her have such a confident smile. One I didn't always have growing up.

I appreciate you so much! Gradually, you have helped me to change my perspective on the way I view and handle my natural hair. I have learned to embrace my shrinkage. Because of you, I am still learning of ways to manipulate my hair as little as possible. Overall, I just wanted to let you know that your platform is hugely important for us Black and Black bi-racial women. Please don't ever change. A lot of us truly need your message of self love and empowerment. I read some of the comments on your mixed girl tag and I personally found a couple of the comments off putting. There were comments stating that if you were to straightened your hair, you would look better or that natural hair does not fit you. When people make such comments, they don't realize that they are in a way commenting to every single Black and Black bi-racial woman with natural hair. It truly boggles my mind that one would have the audacity to tell a race of people that possess a physical trait that God has given to them, that they are substandard because of this trait. Unfortunately, I think some of those comments were from self hating Black women who have not deprogrammed their minds from decades of racism and images portrayed in the media. The truth: if Black people were to fully embrace all the beautiful unique characteristics that make us who we are, we would be a powerful people. For example, several none Black women are now claiming themselves as part of the Natural Hair Movement. Overall, please don't ever change because a lot of us love and appreciate you so much 💚
Love this comment. You speak the truth. Those of us who are part Black and have curly/coarse hair should be confident enough to wear it whenever we please, however we please. Nothing that we were naturally born with could somehow "not fit us". That's absurdity. And sadly, I bet some of those commenters were black and mixed themselves.

You kind of sound like me wit relaxed hair. My hair grew at first. Waited to get a retouch. Hair broke off. For my hair to grow with relaxer I had to get it done ever so often . They were too expensive for me. Yes I did the short hair cut. I first got it layered. It took awhile for my hair to grow out of layers. It was so thick when I had my first son then layer it did grow longer but my hair would break off and then I would get it cut in a style and so forth. Did my own relaxer at times to save money etc. Now that it is natural it growing more as long as I keep it moisturized and take care of it right. Your tutorials and information about your hair journey is very helpful!
I grew up with my mixed “cousin” who is the same skin tone as you with the same hair texture as you so it’s funny to me when people think light skinned people can’t have kinky curly long/big hair. ❤️❤️❤️

Great video. I went through the same with my hair growing up. Permed it for the first time I think in 5th grade. Then through out middle school my hair fell out like crazy because my mom never really properly took care of my hair. So I had a lot burn patches and uneven straight hair. 🙄 I had box braids for my entire HS because of that and then I permed it after 4 years of braids. Big mistake, because I also didn’t take good care of my hair. Then I cut it and had dreads lox for college which I decided to bleach blonde because, dreads could take anything. Which I feel now wasn’t a good idea. Then in 2012 got rid of my dreads and I had a fro again. Then I started wearing wigs like crazy because I didn’t know what to do with my natural hair. In 2016 I decided to stop wearing wigs and bleach my natural hair again 🤦🏽♀️ My hair started breaking literally every month. I went from a huge fro to a small one. So November 2016 I did a big chop of my natural bleached hair. Then I decided from then on, not to touch my hair and just let it grow.

I was called cotton head when I wore my fluffy fro. Being 1 of only a few Black kids in elementary and middle school, my friends just never saw anyone with natural curly kinky hair. It’s hilarious how many of us had the same styles growing up, no matter the generation. 😂

Your really short twa cut with your Pepsi tea was ADORABLE!!! Went with your face, great! I know we all have such hair journeys 😃So I don’t know if you should call them mistakes, just moments within your journey: learning yourself, loving yourself, growing! As a side note: if anyone decides to color their hair (which I never suggest one uses a box dye, EVER 😕) make sure to give yourself a protein treatment that same month! If you notice breakage and/or shedding earlier than the month, go ahead and do one (either at your salon OR Aphogee 2- Step Keratin Treatment is my favorite for hair that NEEEEDS protein ASAP like yesterday! It’s a packet and you can get easily at Sally’s! )
She has the eyeshape and hair to dress up as 70's characters ... her hair is beautiful. Sometimees people with 4c hair tend to forget that they have the best hair downpat for Braids..Twists...Loc.. etc and it tends to be low frizz ....

The ending of this was absolutely perfect, and something I really needed to hear right now. I've had a rough 6 months so I stopped taking care of my hair during that period and had a HUGE setback. And though, ugh, what's the point? But decided to trim my hair, detangle it, deep condition and start again [ish]. It looks a lot better now, and has reminded me to take care of myself when things get bad.
Relaxed to natural and everything in between. It is DEFINITELY a journey. And for those of us who are born with highly textured tresses it is a BIG deal. I have been watching your videos for a short time. But i definitely see your growth. You have glowed up during your journey.
My hair is tpye 4 as well and your hair journey is so similar to mine. The highs and the lows, the jheri curl and having to chop off all of hair due to damage and chemicals. I went natural in 2011 and my hair is the healthiest and longest its ever been in my entire life.

Wow. Your story is truly inspiring. I had my hair straightened by several of my mom friends when I was 10 and my mom gave up on the pigtails with knockers. I spent the next 7 years getting my hair straightened every 2 weeks. I didn't know how to wash my own hair until I was nearly out of high school. I honestly didn't learn how to wash it RIGHT until I hit 20/21. It has definitely been a journey, and not always a fun one but I do love my natural curls/kinks/ and poofs. I am so happy for the growth and health of your hair!

😱 6 is so young. My mom and aunts didnt let us girls do chemicals but they used the straightening comb like crazy 😏 when were teens we all were rebellious and did relaxers (out the box🤦♀️) against their wishes.

Joy-el YOU ARE VERY BEAUTIFUL. It makes me so ANGRY when black mom's don't know how to take care of their daughters hair and then won't even take them to a hair salon to get it done properly. All she had to do was wash and braid your hair in plats and leave it that way for a few weeks at a time instead of putting chemicals in it. It's that simple!!! You should have had long hair all your life--from looking at the pic of you with your mom and dad. Wow!!! My mom did the same thing to my hair put a relaxer and it was down hill from there with my hair. Today, my hair is kind of long and strong and I wear it natural. BTW you can call yourself whatever you want mixed or biracial, I too am biracial. You don't have to call yourself black (due to pressure of society who can't be pleased) if you don't want to simply because of your hair type and not your skin color. When they first relaxed my hair at 9, the next year most of it fell out. So they cut out the damage and put a Jheri Curl in which I wore for about 2-3 years. The kids called my Jheri Curl Juice Janice 😭. Middle school was mean. So once it was long enough to put into a bun I wore my Jheri Curl in bun only. Then by 8th grade I went back to a relaxer until 2012. But that was back in 1992!! I didn’t know Jheri Curls we’re still around.

I had a curl too! Ours looked so natural, though. I was giving you Tia and Tamara before the blow out years. I was living it. Then it started break off at the crown of my head, so I did a chop, switched to a perm.... started breaking off more. So I was like, ENOUGH. Obviously chemicals are not for me. And I have been natural ever since. Only problem I have these days is split ends. 🤷 But at least it's not falling out, or breaking off.

No more creamy crack for me, ever! I’ll continue to shampoo + condition my natural hair healthy and wear protective styles. Now I’m in transition from cutting (what I didn’t want) my locs back to my thick, coarse 4C hair because I love (have loved) my beautiful + quirky self. Keep pulling back the layers and letting go of what doesn’t serve any purpose for you anymore. You’re on the right path!
