I thought I had stumbled upon a workflow where I could do sound design in Live and sequencing in Renoise. Turns out I will do both in Renoise now. Thank you for this video!
One of the best sound design tutorials for Renoise around, thank you so much for going through all your tricks and techniques to make a modular synth that doesn't break. Never knew Ring Mod would be of so much use with Key Mapping. I used to hand draw all my samples, now this alternative makes it a lot easier to create base sounds. Learned a bit about Send, your use of Macros, just a whole gamut of good stuff. Please keep up the videos, it's a gem.
hand drawing all samples sounds like a REAL feat! i'd be really interested to hear your output! i'll see what i can do to put together a new video this weekend :)
Here's a drop box link of stuff I've made with Renoise. I should restate I don't make all my samples from scratch, but I've been fiddling a lot with Massive ,Serum, Drawing samples, combining them, chaining them. Your level of modulation seems optimal. Also saw in your most recent vid you used Hydra to link multiple LFOs to the cutoff on your synth lead. It's sick nasty. I feel like Renoise could potentially be a more powerful synthesizer than Serum and Massive in some cases with the right tools and chains. www.dropbox.com/sh/s1j044s81peohsk/AABCGrwBCwy8XvRwLvYYT8Ywa?dl=0 Also a lot of these songs are experiments in my first year of trying to compose chiptunes and other stuff haha. Hope it's not to wish washy for a newbie.
listened to the whole lot! sounds like there's a game soundtrack in there! beast_beat reminds me of th-cam.com/video/kLnnbKESJTc/w-d-xo.html :) i love these little minimalistic ideas you put together. strong classical influences. you mind if i play around with them a bit? make a built from these? i think it'd be fun :D my favorites -- CutOff, ghost beat, Noise, Summertime, w00_Title_02, w02_Bird_00, w3_dunes, buzz_bam
Yeah, that'd be a blast! I'm glad you liked a lot of my simple stuff! Noise and Cutoff were made with your tutorials! Summertime, Dunes, Bird are among my favorites too! Yeah lots of small ditties with potential here and there! If you want access to my Renoise files, here you go. www.dropbox.com/sh/l02xdpk71a4dfop/AADgnzc7pNw92w6-EDhzqO-Oa?dl=0 Here's the instruments I've made if you need access to them! www.dropbox.com/sh/ddnveatlpouktpq/AABg9NZiXczH8WrYEaApb1oEa?dl=0 I'm honored more than anything. I can't believe you used my music. Collaborations are what I'm all about :D. Woah, Olmec is sexy as hell. Low key a great soundtrack people overlooked on Nick. Yeah, my background comes in piano, a bit of musicianship classes, sound design classes speckled throughout my 27 year old life! My hope is this year I can get into some deep modulation and track design to make stuff like Infected Mushroom, or The Glitch Mob. Also been inspired by Red Hot Chilli Pepper's lately (Can't Stop is my earworm.) Didn't know you'd like beast beat to that level. Now it makes me wanna add some shakers and high pitched chorus voices. I think Mario 64 has some of that going on in its creepier stages (on second thought maybe not.) I digress though. Or wait were you referring to w01_Cavern? (World 1 - Cavern) Oh final goody for tonight: www.dropbox.com/sh/ggkh41tsbfo5ene/AABVZpWIerCqnmD4wmnpJEtIa?dl=0 I've linked you so much already, but I hope this isn't too much, haha!
Cool video, thanks :) The ringmod trick is very interesting, but it seems like the instrument will always be monophonic, correct? (Because there is only one signal chain per instrument, so only one ringmod / oscillator.) Using the sample editor with a single-cycle wave sample will yield basically the same result, but will also allow polyphony. It's possible that the sine wave might suffer less from aliasing issues, but I was wondering if it might actually be a lookup table under the hood anyway, in which case it would basically be identical to using a single-cycle wave sample. I'm sorry, I don't mean to undermine or criticise your very cool synthesis demonstration, it just got me thinking about what's going on behind the scenes. All the sound shaping techniques you demonstrate are great, and show the true power of Renoise for synthesis. In case you or anyone else are unaware, there's a great free library of single cycle wave samples called "AKWF Wave Samples", which I only just discovered. These are an amazing resource for using in Renoise as a starting point for subtractive synthesis. Cheers :)
I think "apply post mixer and pan" was a fantastic addition. Sending tracks to buses and being able to adjust their volume on the mixer is far easier than going into each individual send. Just simplicity for mixing imo.
This a great way to get creative with sounds in Renoise! Great tutorial, I´ve created several instruments I use on a regular basis using this technique! I´ve been tinkering a bit with the effect chains to get a polyphonic instrument going, but I´m stuck at the fact all oscillators are tracking to the latest note pressed. Does anyone know a way around this?
Hi, haven't finished watching the video so perhaps you spotted it later, but at 17:30 you didn't break anything! The sends have 'Apply post mixer volume and pan' applied, so when you brought the volume down the sends were silenced too. Cheers!
Amazing tutorial! I've been wanting renoise to be sort of my all-inclusive option. One thing that is bothering me is how I cannot figure out how to sync the phases for each RingMod. I'd like a way to be able to start them at the same time with the option of a delay or something. I know it's been 6 years since you've posted this, so I don't know if you'll see this, but were you able to figure out how to get the phases synced? Thanks for the tutorial!
Yesss... thats a nifty way of doing it, Ive been roundabouting it for too fucking long, thanks so much this. Its 500 times easier than what im usually doing, omg life is so much easier now ... and guys, make your template with oscillators that way you dont have to come back to check how its done :)
Excellent! Only a bit too quick on places 😝 For some reason the delays inserted exactly where you put them have strictly no impact on sound. And the reverb is very slight, sounding like this is inherent from the software. Same for filter = very subtle, almost inexistent.
today for the 1st time my renoise dont work as it used to.. if i keep a note pressed , the space bar or the delete button when renoise is still , the cursor wont go down the next step as it used to do up until yesterday...
I'll watch them! :) There are not many video related to sound creation in Renoise. Would be cool if you shown some tricks how to make interesting instruments with short, single cycle samples (yeah, and the synth you made in this video sounds just awesome!)
Where FM is the modulation of a frequency using another frequency RM is the modulation of volume of a frequency using another frequency It can also be a way to morph and multiply 2 pitches together But that's the quick and dirty explanation it's capable of doing a lot of things just experiment with it
Ive been dabbling with renoise for a few years now...still have the demo and can never bring my self to delete it....just wish i was smarter lol good info here though. thx!
Very clever! I'm new to Renoise so most of this was way over my head, but fascinating nonetheless. The first 11 minutes seemed like a slight waste of time since it's a redundant method, but I guess it's still interesting.
interesting, but it seems using dc offset and ringmode creates offset(the sine is above point zero), so maybe also use a dc offset to correct the offset. Edit: Just tried it, it works. If you dont do it you'll probably run into volume issues/bass problems
I think the offset is due to the dry/wet mix of the ringmod being left at the default value of 75%. If it were 100% wet, there wouldn't any offset in the ringmod's output. Multiplying an oscillator by a constant (which is how the DC offset is being used here) won't change the oscillator's offset. Look at the scopes while playing with the wetness and you'll see what I mean.
Cool stuff! Want to add that instead of automating the macros using patterncommand values in the pattern editor you can also use drawn envelopes in the automation editor instead. This for more smoothly interpolated transitions, useful for example when automating cutoff.
This tutorial is mind blowing! I hope you continue with these tutorials one day
I had no idea you could do that in renoise. That tutorial is a gem. And thank you you didn't cut the part where you broke the sound engine.
I thought I had stumbled upon a workflow where I could do sound design in Live and sequencing in Renoise. Turns out I will do both in Renoise now. Thank you for this video!
Thank you for warning me before turning up that synth, I was wearing headphones!

Thanks a lot for taking time to do that. Renoise needs more of these…
This is insanely awesome!!! Thank you so much for showing this!! This literally CHANGES EVERYTHING and makes Renoise infinitely better!!!! Thanks!!!

thanks for mentioning AKWF! that's just what I needed :)
YES. This is what I couldn't figure out! Thank you for addressing this and for pointing to the AKWF sample library.
Cool song and cool Nicole.
!that was awesome man!
I was going to go to bed after watching this.
Now I have to go fuck around in Renoise all night.

Learned lots here, keep up the great work! HAHAH, just noticed I've been here before!
Thanks for sharing, really neat stuff :)

you are SO correct -- I should've gone in and fixed that in post.

This is the best Renoise tutorial I've ever seen
When you added the signal follower to the gain my jaw dropped

Awesome video. I'm on 3.4.2 and I can't get the click out with the ADSR in the sample modulator. Any tips there?
really cool. someone in the forums once posted a demo of an additive synth he made with sines. With your ring mod technique, it would be sick.
interesting approach
Great video ! Thanks to you, I made things I've never made before with Renoise ! Thumbs Up !!
Now, I suffer common modular madness :)
KICKASS!!!
Thank tou so much! Superuseful.

@@CerealKiller thanks for that..
i got it sorted 2 or 3 weeks ago..
it was as you suggested though
Very interesting intro, but I'm gonna mark 11:30 here so I know whenever I come back.
very nice, thnx❤
This kinda sounds like background music from the game Boson X. So distant and atmospheric.
Thank you for the inspiring performance.
Great tutorial thanks!
Great video, waiting for more! Maybe some stream with song from scratch to finished piece? :)
thanks :) i'm glad someone is interested! i used to do live streams of the advent trax, but haven't since dec 2016. perhaps i'll start up again :)))))

I'm still confused as to what exactly RingMod does. The wiki is not particularly elucidative either.
Where FM is the modulation of a frequency using another frequency
RM is the modulation of volume of a frequency using another frequency
It can also be a way to morph and multiply 2 pitches together
But that's the quick and dirty explanation it's capable of doing a lot of things just experiment with it
Creates Darlek voices. Or something.
It's literally just multiplication.
Ive been dabbling with renoise for a few years now...still have the demo and can never bring my self to delete it....just wish i was smarter lol good info here though. thx!
thanks, great tips!

Edit: Just tried it, it works. If you dont do it you'll probably run into volume issues/bass problems
Don't forget to use another offset, to offset the offsetting of your offsets.
There's a reason why the word 'infinite' is in the title ;)
I think the offset is due to the dry/wet mix of the ringmod being left at the default value of 75%. If it were 100% wet, there wouldn't any offset in the ringmod's output. Multiplying an oscillator by a constant (which is how the DC offset is being used here) won't change the oscillator's offset. I found only few video about this subject.
Is it mono??
Absolutly working as hell'" ; )P
woah cool
That was amazing. Thank you!
BRILLIANT! KEEP IT UP!
Great video! Moar pleez!

~10 min - To get rid of high freq content from the transient you need a low pass filter, not a high pass.
Thanks! This help
Amazing! Thank you so much. Big up ;)
