  • A place dear to my heart, as a place my Mother and I visited together. An amazing 1894, 22- room Romanesque Revival mansion, along the Ohio River, built by Edmond Howard. Edmonds father, James Howard, had came to Jeffersonville, at only 19 years old, and built a shipyard, that produced over 3,000 watercraft in its lifetime. It was the largest inland shipyard in the United States, and built some of the largest and most beautiful steamboats ever created.
What makes this mansion particularly interesting, is that craftsman were asked to walk across the street, from the Howard Shipyard, and build the mansion, making the architecture extremely unique! Then, Mr Howards wife visited the 1893 Worlds Fair, at Chicago, and purchased chandeliers, oriental rugs, and a houseful of beautiful furniture: much of it is still here! On premises are steamboat artifacts and models, from the very small to the actual paddle wheel of the Delta Queen. A remnant of the storied Robert E Lee steamboat is also here.
This is a grand time capsule that’s a delight to visit. The mansion is only a few minutes from interstate 64, and downtown Louisville, at Jeffersonville, Indiana. It’s just east of the highway and next to the Ohio River: just follow the signs!

That mansion was something! Can't believe how much they saved. Great story. Thanks

I’ve always been fascinated by these men that started with nothing, worked really hard, and ended up with an empire. Inspiring stories!

@@AdventureswithRoger yep. That's the American dream. I was watching young people talk about the American dream and they thought have kids an send them to college. I think it's to start your own business or be able to work to support your family. Buy a plot of land. College is such a waste of money. Only in my opinion.

@@chrisblack8390 That’s fair. I agree that college is a waste of money if you don’t have a way to apply it. It’s absolutely not a magic bullet and it’s not for everyone. I have a handful of family that got degrees and they’re working jobs that don’t use the things they studied. Some degrees are pretty worthless to make money. I wanted a business degree from the start, as my grandpas had businesses, and I thought it could help me and maybe my other family members. It definitely did help me have a better life than if I’d never went. 🙂

I live on Utica Pike which is very close to this beautiful home. Me and my friends love to walk downtown and we always walk past it.

Beautiful place that could’ve been torn down after a 1970’s fire: so glad they restored it! When I stand in front of it, I think about the hundreds of boats they made, right in front of it, at their shipyard. Each time I’ve visited, I can’t get over how quiet it is.

Awesome mansion. The JFD Lanier mansion at Madison and the Culbertson mansion at New Albany are also very nice. But if you have the time, drive over to Evansville and see the Reitz mansion. A guy made a fortune in the lumber industry, and built a respectable mansion a few blocks from the Ohio River. Then his three kids spent a fortune updating it after he and his wife died. I don’t think there’s an undecorated or unembellished inch in that house. Simply amazing. It’s been featured on many TV shows as one of the most impressive mansions in the nation. It’s not a huge mansion like Vanderbilt, the outside isn’t even all that impressive. But inside is where you’ll be wowed.

We live in Evansville, IN and have toured the Reitz home several times. It is AMAZING and simply over the top. Worth the drive and time to visit it.

My Great Grandmother a Ripschlager, was an adopted daughter (not legal, but she called her her daughter)of Mrs. Howard. She gave birth to my Grandmother out of wedlock. My Grandmother’s Father was Fred Bamber. My Grandmother was given to his country brother and sister-in-law to raise. My Great Grandmother is buried in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky.
