What language did the Spanish speak before the Italians forced them to learn Latin , would he better of learning that language if it still spoken
This episode has been a good reminder for me that even if a language is spoken by fewer people compared to others it is still worth learning because it will still be an enriching experience as there is so much history and culture behind every language.

Andreu tiene razÃģn.Soy alemÃĄn y hablo ambas lenguas y siempre cuando se dan cuenta que soy extranjero me hablan en castellano. Cuando insisto en hablar catalÃĄn se sorprenden mucho de que alguien hable catalÃĄn tan bien.
Tengo planeado mudarme a Barcelona dentro de un aÃąo. Mi novio naciÃģ y aÚn vive allÃ, y es bilingÞe como su hermana. Sus padres se mudaron a Barcelona desde otras comunidades autÃģnomas, sin embargo solo hablan castellano. Yo llevo casi dos aÃąos aprendiendo castellano, y soy capaz de entender el catalÃĄn bastante bien (mi lengua materna es el italiano, esto tambiÃĐn ayuda). Creo que irÃĐ aprendiendo el catalÃĄn con la exposiciÃģn a diario.
Siendo italiana y aprendiendo castellano el catalan te serÃĄ mucho mÃĄs fÃĄcil.
@@angyliv8040 tienes suerte! Italiano y Catalan son las lenguas romances que mÃĄs vocabulario comparten entre ellas (>80% segun Ethnologue), algunas palabras usadas por una lengua se consideran arcaÃsmos o sinÃģnimos en desuso en la otra lengua.
Creo que si la estudias podrÃas llegar al nivel C en 1 aÃąo, supongo que deberÃas seguir un plan de estudio hecho para hispanohablantes te irÃa bien (porquÃĐ dudo que haya uno para hablantes de italiano, si lo hubiera seria mejor) .
como ucraniano, me gustarÃa decir que deberÃas aprender el idioma del lugar donde vives. Para mà es fÃĄcil entender el problema del idioma catalÃĄn, porque el ucraniano tiene un problema similar, a pesar de que la poblaciÃģn de mi paÃs es muy grande para Europa. Pero ahora las situaciones con mi idioma estÃĄn mejorando.
Exacto. El ucraniano tiene muchos hablantes pero en las zonas donde hay poblaciÃģn rusa se usa mas el ruso. Yo creo que se ve el ruso cÃģmo una lingua franca en la que la mayoria de la gente se entiende pero esto significa que el ucraniano se use menos en segun que ocasiones
"plegar" existe definitivamente en castellano tambiÃĐn. Ãnicamente que significa otra cosa: doblar, por ejemplo una hoja de papel. Y no "acabar" como en catalÃĄn. Pero en catalÃĄn tambiÃĐn puede significar "doblar", asà que tiene doble significado.

Cuando vivÃĐ en Girona hablÃĐ castellano porque no puede hablar catalÃĄn. Pero siempre usÃĐ muchos palabras en catalÃĄn como Bon dÃa, Adeu, merci y etc.

I know some people from an English town twinned with a Catalonian town - they meet at a lady's house weekly and are trying to learn Catalonian from books without a dedicated teacher.

No entendo catalan si le oyo, pero es mas facil cuando le veo escribido. Es en la "mitad del camino" entre espanol (castillano) y frances. Entendo 80/90% del catalan escribido...

When I was in Barcelona everyone spoke Spanish. At least the people a tourist will come into contact with.
Thatâs true, and I donât think Andreu argues otherwise. But, for example, the same applies in the Netherlands or Scandinavia - everyone you come into contact with as a tourist will speak English. However, if you want to *enrich* your experience, it can help at least to know some basics in the local language.
@@Parso77 Itâs not the same thing as speaking English. Spanish is the local language as much as Catalan - maybe even more so. You really do not need to know Catalan to speak to a local. Unless you plan on traveling to a small village away from the city and coastal towns.

@@arnaul_de_lapras5853 Travelers to Spain should learn Spanish. Not Catalan. A version of Spanish is spoken in over twenty countries in the world. It is a powerful tool. Catalan is a local language not very useful at all - even in Catalunya.

I moved to Barcelona and I'd say this:
Learn Spanish first cause it's overall more useful. My academy told me to use Catalan with students, but guess what? Most students were from Latin America and knew less Catalan than me. If you plan on living outside of Barcelona I would say pick up some Catalan, but unless you have a plan to stay in CataluÃąa long term or have some personal reason to learn Catalan please prioritize Castellano since it is far more useful internationally. I've been around the world and find far more situations where I get to use Castellano. Even with people from the Catalonia region of Spain! Happy learning!
Yes Barcelona is not the best place to learn spanish because if you dont have a good enough evel to differenciate them you'll allways be confused, so you'll learn spanish but you'll probably pick up many catalan words and mix them with spanish and you'll end up being in latin america talking with some words that they'll not understand and you'll not even know it's catalan's words.
I'm french i knew spanish but when i wanted to moove to Barcelona i've searched the jobs offers and seen that they almost always ask for catalan so as the unemployment situation was quite bad at this period i preffer to not had an other difficulty with the language and went to Madrid and worked 2 years in spanish. Now i'm back in France but still want to go in Barcelona and now my spanish is good enough, i have experience working in Spain so i'll have not much problem working in Barcelona and i'll probably learn catalan very quick since it's pretty much spanish mixed with french. But it's not a language that sound nice so i'm not motivated at all to learn it.
@@frederic6998in Barcelona we speak perfect Spanish. We know which words are from one or another language. Maybe we mix in a colloquial area but we know which words we are using.
As a Catalan national and as a Catalan speaker, I not only disagree with you, but I find your view to be totally egoist and disrespectful to the Catalan language, to the Catalan culture and most and overall to the Catalan-speaking people. In the world, everyone loves its own mother tongue and every language must be respected in its own territory of origin. Go to Quebec and tell a French-speaking family that English is more useful, so you will learn English better than French. Totally egoist and disrespectful. If you think that way, I am pretty sure French-speaking families would not welcome you in Quebec and Catalan-speaking families will not welcome you in Catalonia. We have enough of these wanting to ignore our language and treat it as a "less" important than Spanish. Come on! Go to visit Madrid if you love so much Spanish language. And by the way, the Catalan language is the Spanish language which is spoken in Catalonia. So Catalan is Spanish too and by learning Catalan you are learning Spanish too. The Spanish language that belongs to Catalonia.

@@bernatboschfolch this is not disrespectful at all, you are wrong, he simply says that IT IS more useful to learn Spanish cuz its the language of over 450 million people in over 20 countries while Catalan is spoken by a few million people, that's not to ignore Catalan culture simply is to be practical, besides learning a language takes time so learning 2 languages at an adult age (like most people here) is just not possible....its like telling someone who is going to Wales in the UK to learn Welsh instead of English! haha that doesn't make any sense

Llevo 30 aÃąos en EspaÃąa, en la provincia de Valencia en concreto. Mi pueblo es valencianoparlante. Asà que, habiÃĐndolo aprendido, tambiÃĐn me puedo comunicar en catalÃĄn. Lo que sà me ayudÃģ era el hecho que ya dominaba el castellano cuando lleguÃĐ (no como ahora pero sÃ). Para mi es importante sentirme integrado y por eso, me siento incÃģmodo si la gente cambia de idioma por mi, hablando valenciano entre ellos. Aquà no hay mucha presiÃģn por tener que aprenderlo, pero, sÃ, te hace sentir mucho mÃĄs integrado si hablas los dos idiomas.

Using castellano as a lingua franca is more than enough to get by with in Barcelona. But if you learn some catalÃĄn you will certainly please the real locals. (But that's true about anywhere one travels). All I ever learned during multiple visits to Catalunya were things like 'benvenguts' (welcome) and 'bon dia'. However, if you can read French and Spanish, which I can, you'll be able to read catalÃĄn pretty much without sweat. But well, as for taking in what people say around you, forget about it...
Soy de Brasil por lo tanto no hablÃģ nada en catalÃĄn. El portuguÃĐs es hablado por solo 269 millones de hablantes (Ethnologue 2023.) Entonces sÃģlo el francÃĐs y castellano estÃĄn arriba de ÃĐl como lengua neolatina. Estudiar otras lenguas es importante. Pero se quieres hacer comunicaciÃģn. InglÃĐs, francÃĐs o otras globales. Mientras se iba a vivir en CataluÃąa es importante hablar catalÃĄn. Pero a mi me gusta las lenguas globales como inglÃĐs, francÃĐs y otras. Hay cientos palabras catalanas que han sido adoptadas por el castellano desde hace siglos: forastero, aÃąorar, burdel, borraja, cantimplora, cascabel, chuleta, cohete, correo, dÃĄtil, escarola, fango, frazada, guante, linaje, lonja, manjar, molde, muelle, naipe, nÃĄcar, novel, orgullo, pantalla, retal, salitre, viaje...

In Spain, there is a complex with all the "Spanish" things, including the language. In certain areas of the country, like Catalonia, the Spanish language is discriminated and people in those areas try to erase the use of this language.

Plegar= terminar el trabajo o la jornada laboral, tambiÃĐn se dice de doblar una hoja de tela o papel pero el mas famoso es el de terminar el trabajo, tambiÃĐn estÃĄ el ,Engegar = poner en marcha..un motor por ejemplo o empezar a trabajar o iniciar una tarea,en castellano tampoco existe una palabra para eso.
11:22 es mas frances que italiano o portugues. Es como una mescla entre Frances y castellano, soy frances y a veces cuando veo cosas escritas en catalan en las calle me parece que quicieron escribir en frances pero que lo han escrito mal.
En AragÃģn tambiÃĐn se dice plegar.
En AlmudÃĐvar (Huesca) en la vida se ha dicho "plegar" usado como en catalÃĄn... SerÃĄ en la zona oriental porque lo que es en el resto de AragÃģn...

SÃ, es mejor llamarlo euskera o vasco. "Vascuense" es una forma despectiva usada durante el franquismo.
El valenciano y el mallorquÃn (asà como el menorquÃn, el ibicenco y el formenterano) son variantes de la misma lengua, que es el catalÃĄn. En Valencia lo llaman "valenciano", pero digamos que no hay debate acadÃĐmico sobre el hecho de que sean una misma lengua con diferentes dialectos, es mÃĄs bien un debate polÃtico que sacan a relucir algunos partidos cada X tiempo.

I had to be so careful when I lived in Mallorca and was trying to learn Castillano, because the grammar is different to CatalÃĄn, and I was learning an incorrect version of both languages.

Bueno para vivir en Barcelona la decision es facÃl. La ciudad es multicultural y todos hablan Castellano pero no todos hablan el Catalan. Pero vivir fuera de Barcelona en CataluÃąa sà mejor el Catalan, y aÚn con eso....todos tambiÃĐn hablan Castellano. Sà la decision es aprender el Castellano o el CatalÃĄn serÃĄ mÃĄs util el Castellano en el resto del territorio EspaÃąol y paÃses hispanofÃģnos.

No, son lenguas diferentes pertenecientes a familias lingÞÃsticas diferentes. El catalÃĄn es galo-romance (como el francÃĐs), y el castellano ibero-romance (como el portuguÃĐs).
El catalÃĄn es mÃĄs cercano al italiano lexicamente que al castellano, y en todos los demÃĄs aspectos al francÃĐs.

It gets easier. Hang in there. I can understand him well in this video yet still can't understand my wife's family half of the time. There are levels, and, believe it or not, this is still the "easy" level.

Spanish is a fast language, especially in Spain. Pau is speaking extra slow to the point that it really stands out as "Spanish for beginners," whereas the people on Easy French are only speaking a bit clearer than what you'd hear in the "real world."
Lo de que el catalÃĄn se enseÃąa en las escuelas, no siempre es verdad. En primer lugar, el espaÃąol, si se enseÃąa, son sÃģlo cuatro horas a la semana, mientras que el resto es sÃģlo en catalÃĄn (o inglÃĐs). Pero tambiÃĐn hay casos se numerosos institutos donde se pretende erradicar el espaÃąol. No sÃģlo no dando clases de dicho idioma, sino que a veces hasta prohibiÃĐndola en los patios.
Curiosamente, en mi experiencia, la mejor lengua para comunicar con los catalanes es inglÃĐs, porque la mayorÃa de los que he hablado solo utilizan inglÃĐs y me dijeron que no les gustaba el espaÃąol.

I speak far better English than Spanish and far better Spanish than Catalan, but I have learned enough Catalan (and shown enough interest in the language), for example, to be invited to events I would not otherwise have been invited to. This is an example of post colonialism studies. Catalan is the original language, and Spanish was forced into population by banning Catalan. Now,both languages are official, but it is Catalans the language disappearing. You can check what happened in Alicante/Alacant. It was a city 100% catalan speaker before the spanish civil warin 1936, where nowadays ins 90% Spanish speaker.
Woww I don't know if colonialism is a term used for the situation of the Catalan language in Spain. The context is clear that is that of a nation-state with its dominant nationalism triying to homogenize and erase the different languages and nations inside its state borders. Colonialism refers to a more unequal and exploitative relation from my view. But again nowadays post colonialism studies have focused a lot on the experience of Russia with its national minorities...so idk. Maybe you're rigth in an way.

It's a stupid question. Why would someone go to the effort of learning a regional language which doesn't actually allow you to openly communicate with the rest of Spain, or LATAM?
Because you want to enrich your cultural experiences in Catalan-speaking areas.
Ultimately, why would anyone learn a language other than English? In the end itâs about a deeper cultural understanding and maximising opportunity.
Of course, if youâre not going to the Catalan-speaking area, you are free not to learn it; in the same way you probably wouldnât bother with Dutch if you werenât going to the Netherlands or Belgium.

AdemÃĄs, hablando catalÃĄn puedes conocer a la parte de la poblaciÃģn con mÃĄs raÃces en CataluÃąa, con mÃĄs poder adquisitivo y por ende por lo general con mÃĄs nivel cultural. Hay una parte importante del paÃs que vivimos en su nacionalidad catalana y para nada del mundo vamos a renunciar a ella. There is no waste in learning a language or a culture. It's all for choice or preference. My British English teacher lived in Barcelona for nearly 30 years but still did not learn Spanish or Catalan. I know some Americans who have Catalan partners and they just want to learn it to communicate with their family in law. If you want it then you learn Catalan, if you don't want it then don't learn it, that's all.

Por eso hay millones de personas en CataluÃąa que quieren dejar EspaÃąa: mientras no seamos un paÃs independiente, ni podremos decidir la cantidad o la calidad de la inmigraciÃģn, ni la procedencia, ni podremos evitar que los inmigrantes crean que tienen derecho a vivir en CataluÃąa sin utilizar la lengua catalana, con la consiguiente sustituciÃģn lingÞÃstica y cultural galopante que se produce. Digamos las cosas como son: no gusta a ninguna persona que su lengua sea sustituida por otra en su propio territorio. Ni a los catalanohablantes de CataluÃąa ni a los castellanohablantes de Madrid ni a los castellanohablantes que viven en Chile. Pero a muchos inmigrantes esto no les importa, porque no les importa si la poblaciÃģn del territorio al que van a vivir sufre alguna consecuencia negativa en su vida. La mayorÃa solo piensa desde su perspectiva, y, ademÃĄs, la mayorÃa viven en entornos sociales donde la poblaciÃģn no es poblaciÃģn autÃģctona de CataluÃąa, sino que tambiÃĐn es poblaciÃģn inmigrante, hijos de inmigrantes o nietos de inmigrantes.
