I visited one of his concerts in june. Being part of a crowd of nearly 100k people singing with him is an amazing emotional experience. Beeing not a native german speaker, there are several songs he recorded in german and english version. "Mensch", "Marie" ( he wrote this for his daughter ) are my recommendations. Also Flugzeuge im Bauch/Airplanes in my head. The english versions make it a lot easier for non germans to understand the songs, before hearing the originals.

You can see his grief at the end of the song ... We were in Munich at this tour ... almost everyone gave standing ovations, and you got tears in your eyes. The whole audience knew, what the song was about and as you could see, they all gave their respect.
You should check out Reinhard Mey and Friends - Nein, meine Söhne geb ich nicht ... do it with subtitles, they are very good.

His beloved wife Anna died from breast cancer and his brother died from leucemia - just one week apart. Imagine the unbearable grief. He withdrew from making music entirely for several years after that because he had to take care of his little children. This song was one of the songs of his first album after the forced break he had to do because of these tragedies. He lost the connection to music but music also led him back to life... It saved his life. Herbert is such a well-known, deeply appreciated and beloved artist here in Germany. His songs are always super sellers, his concerts are always sold out. Fortunately he found a new love and he got married again.
This tour was the first after his break, you can still see the sadness in his eyes. The crowd is exactly knowing what he's been through. They carry him through these concerts with so much love and appreciation. This song is a masterpiece. It has become a classic. Check out his song "Mensch". He dedicated it to his late brother Wilhelm. Herbert is an excellent classic pianist, an actor and one of the greatest composers for German pop music and ballads. His poetic lyrics are truly out of this world.

Update: This is "Mensch", make sure to watch it until the end, you'll be floored, I promise. The crowd definitely floored him with its reaction. It's beyond powerful.

Herbert Grönemeyer's song "Der Weg" is a deeply emotional reflection on the loss of his wife, Anna Henkel-Grönemeyer. The song is filled with grief and longing, but it also shows how Grönemeyer processes his pain and finds solace in the memories of their time together.
The song opens with a haunting sense of despair: “I can’t see anymore, I no longer trust my eyes.” This is a powerful metaphor for the emotional shock and confusion that comes with losing someone close. Life seems to lose its clarity, and even reality feels questionable. Grönemeyer expresses the internal numbness and struggle to regain a sense of meaning. The line “Emotions have twisted” reinforces this idea: things that once felt clear and stable are now distorted and incomprehensible.
As the song progresses, Grönemeyer portrays the internal conflict that often accompanies grief. The line “I am too weary to give up” captures the exhaustion of continuing, yet at the same time, he doesn’t have the strength to completely surrender. It’s a state of enduring pain, where moving forward feels almost impossible, but giving up isn’t an option either: “It would be too soon because there’s always something left.”
A particularly poignant part of the song is the recollection of the love and partnership that Grönemeyer and his wife shared. The line “We were sworn, would have died for each other” is a testament to their profound bond. It conveys a sense of soul connection and complete trust - a love so deep that they would have done anything for one another. This statement highlights the intensity of their relationship, making the loss all the more painful.
The comparison of life to a “wild ride” is a poetic image that speaks to the unpredictability and speed of life. A wild ride is difficult to control, symbolizing how events spiral out of control and how fate seems unstoppable. In this context, Grönemeyer emphasizes that “nothing was too late,” meaning that they had no unfulfilled dreams together, but “much was too soon” - their time was abruptly and painfully cut short. This is the most heartbreaking part of the song: the acknowledgment that death came before their journey together could be completed.
Though the song is deeply rooted in grief and sorrow, it doesn’t end in complete hopelessness. Grönemeyer leaves space for the possibility that life can continue despite the loss: “because there’s always something left.” This line suggests that despite everything, there are still ways to carry on, and that even though the person is gone, their memory and the love shared can become a source of strength.
Overall, the song strikes a balance between profound grief and the realization that memories of the loved one remain alive, helping to continue life’s journey - though it will never be the same. Grönemeyer powerfully conveys that grief is a long, enduring process, but love and memories can serve as comforting anchors in the darkest of times.

Wenn heute auch schon morgen wär'
Even if today were already tomorrow
Gehe das Glück stets neben euch her
May happiness always walk beside you
Verlässt euch an keinem noch so entlegenden Ort
Never leave you in any remote place
      Als einseliger Akkord, immerfort, immerfort
Like a lonely chord, forever, forever
      Gebt auf eure Liebe acht
      Take care of your love
Seht immer wieder im Herzen nach
      Always look into your heart
Dass kein einziges Gefühl dort still verdorrt
So that no feeling withers away silently there
      Seid einseliger Akkord, immerfort, immerfort
Be a lonely chord, forever, forever
      Seid einseliger Akkord, immerfort, immerfort
Be a lonely chord, forever, forever
Legt nach, liebt euch Tag für Tag
Continue, love each other day by day
Legt nach, liebt euch jeden Tag
Continue, love each other every day
Was immer euch die Zeit zuweht
Whatever the time brings to you
Steht zusammen, bis der Sturm sich legt
Stand together until the storm subsides
      Seid einander ein sanftester Hort
Be a gentle refuge for each other
      Seid einseliger Akkord, immerfort, immerfort
Be a lonely chord, forever, forever
Lagt nach, liebt euch Tag für Tag
Continue, love each other day by day
Legt nach, liebt euch jeden Tag
Continue, love each other every day
      Protégez bien votre amour
      Protect your love well
C'est un cadeau, chaque seul jour
It's a gift, every single day
Affrontez tous les dangers et peurs
      Face all dangers and fears
Préservez à jamais la chaleur dans vos cœurs
Preserve the warmth in your hearts forever
Préservez à jamais la chaleur dans vos cœurs
Preserve the warmth in your hearts forever

@@TNUELZ You're so welcome! Herbert is a true poet, an ambassador for the German language in my eyes. German can be so poetic, the words have so many different meanings behind them. Even this translation doesn't really show how deep those words are, how thoughtful, heartfelt he picked them. He talks about the heart, the beauty of it, the love that 2 people share and that you have to pay attention to your hearts when you have found love. Keep checking up your heart, make sure there's still love inside, love for your partner, this bond you have for each other. Immerfort is an old German word. It doesn't only mean always. It's more than that. It means constantly, it asks you to put effort into it, don't stop caring... you know what I mean? Keep reminding yourself how precious this is. The lyrics and the melody just match this feeling he wants to evoke in his audience. I love that he switches to French at the end... the language of love. It's so meaningful.

    • @Surfi2006
      @Surfi2006 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Also... be a lonely chord is not accurate in my opinion... it's more be the perfect chord, the most beautiful sounding chord, the one that makes you happy when you listen to it. It's supposed to be metaphoric.. If a loving couple would be music, he imagines them as a beautiful, one- of- a- kind sounding chord.
I love his lyrics, they never disappoint, they always make you think about situations, feelings, hidden meanings. They are never random, they are always unique in the most special way you can imagine.
Much love to you from Germany! Diana 🙂
