After the death of his wife from cancer, Herbert retired from music, and most thought this is the end. Then some years later he came back with this song in which he talks about his love, his loss and about going on. It's deeply personal and its all about the wonderful lyrics that make me cry every time.
Herbert is one of the most famous singer in Germany. Since his fifth studio album "Bochum" from 1984 all of his albums were on place 1 in the german charts until 2018! He also played a role in the internationaly well known anti war movie "Das Boot" (the boat) from 1981. Greetings from Berlin 😎
Everyone in Germany knew his story and when it was announced that he was coming back with a new album, so many pre-orders were received that the album reached diamond status long before its release.
The concerts of this tour, with the songs from that album, were the most profound I ever had. I watched him two times on that tour and one of them was open air at the Waldbühne (=Forest Stage) in Berlin, an amphitheatre-style venue surrounded by woods which seats 22k people. Sitting there on a warm summer evening with so many people, singing and feeling his sons, was marvelous.
It's the attempt to comprehend the pain he went through that made him writing this song that makes us crying, we feel with him every time we listen to his song
Grönemeyer dedicated the song to his wife, who died as a result of breast cancer. He sings about shared experiences and that he will live on and always think of her
It is the total sadness and the beauty, like pain and joy, dark and blue, right now and endless, the unfairness of love, its the birth and the death, the realness of a persons life. Herbert Grönemeyer is one of the goods

Herbert Grönemeyer is a german national treasure. Herbert wrote this song for his wife who died of breast cancer. This song was released one year after i've lost my mum to breat cancer. Means a lot to me ❤✌
If ever there ever has been a love song, that‘s it. I remember still the Moment I heardt it first, some morning in 2003, on my way to work, can‘t stop crying… it‘s about his wife, died 1998 because of cancer,
Origin and background After the death of his brother on November 1, 1998 and his wife, Anna Henkel-Grönemeyer, on November 5, 1998 within a few days of each other, Grönemeyer took a longer break. During this time out, he wrote his eleventh album, which he himself describes as helping him to come to terms with his grief. He dedicated the single Der Weg to his wife, who died as a result of breast cancer.[1] Grönemeyer wrote the song himself and it was produced by Grönemeyer and the music producer Alex Silva. Music and lyrics Artist Herbert Grönemeyer (2014) The song is about his deceased wife, whom Grönemeyer describes with metaphors, reminiscing about old memories and looking back on her and their life together. He also addresses his own experiences of coming to terms with grief, such as the possibility of giving up. But the song is also a tribute to hope. In the last lines in particular, "I'm not going away, I've extended my deadline, new time travel, open world," he describes looking ahead and starting a new chapter in his life. The song is a ballad and is played with the instruments piano, cello and violin. The lyrics are written entirely in German. 🎶💖☯☮
Love also his song "Mensch" (human) and the version, where he sings the song in a duet with Jose carreras, one of the three tenors, the greatest tenors of all time (carreras, Pavarotti, Domingo)!
Oh yes, but please live. This Song is the most beautyful when several thousands of people sing. But I agree, it is one of the most beautyful love Songs ever
The relatively simple and repetitive melody of the song creates space for emotional and atmospheric gradations over the course of the song and allows these to stand out. The path begins with the reduced sound that is characteristic of Grönemeyer and increases from the third verse, when strings and background vocals join in and give the choruses an emotional feel. The lyrics are much more complex. With their multi-layered metaphors and numerous wordplays they express very personal and intimate feelings - but they do this in Grönemeyer's quite concise manner. This expression is further supported by his peculiar way of singing, which swallows and mumbles some things, suddenly highlights others and gives the whole thing a very unique expression that lends the personal content of the song additional authenticity. Some points that were perhaps not given enough attention in the translation: The conflict with the outside world: The fact that the two created their own world, which was often at odds with the normal world. The metaphor (we) "bent the rain" makes it clear: The couple fought together against constraints and adversities in the real world and they privately withdrew into their own world, in which they could achieve everything together that was denied to them in normal life. The loss of the shared world: The loss of his wife is not only the loss of the person, but also the loss of the shared world away from the harsh reality. Duran Duran might have called this the "ordinary world". This double grief should be expressed in a translation, because not only does his love no longer have a living object, but inspiration and passion also dry up. The only reconciliatory thing that Grönemeyer feels - besides gratitude for the community with his wife - is that she never stoped following her own idea of happiness - goals that she saw as not sufficiently realized in reality - and was always ready to adress and change resistance or reactionary opinions.

Thank you for showing this video of "Der Weg". As much as I can understand that you want to listen to songs without having any information about it, in this case it would have helped to know that it was dedicated to his wife who had passed. That way you would have understood the reactions of the audience and also how hard it was for Herbert, to perform the song. So your interpretation wasn't getting the whole dimension.
For me it seems funny that he is far more famous than his brother Dietrich, a surgeon, who inveted super small micro invasive instruments to operate on people and got several prices for that. He actually changed the lives of thousands of people for the better with that. Not to diss Herbert, though, his music is great. I just don't get the difference in public perception.
I do understand what you mean. Someone that 'saves lives' should be more prominent it would seem. Maybe its a matter of people chose feeling good musically, over dismal talks about hospitals. 🤷🏽♂️ Thanks for commenting, Angie. ~ Tazzz ~

Hello there. Hope you check out another German music reaction I just uploaded from, Helene Fischer. Have a good one. 😏 ~ Tazzz ~

Thanks for commenting, Angie.

Hey Germans. Be happy that you get both brothers that in each of their choosen field is a gigant. It's not often the lightning strikes twice at the same spot.
from my own experience I can say that music can be a lifesaver as well
