    Some fish are shy of the braid and we have to go to an invisible connection...others, like tarpon would go right through the braid because of their rough mouth. I use a leader for redfish because it is easy to handle the fish without cutting my hands on the braid and it doesnt get tangled in spinnerbaits.

      You said a j hook unless your fishing in the gulf can you explain? Why not a circle hook?

    For anyone who is cheap like me and doesn’t want to use swivels you can just tie your leader section to the wire with an Albright special. However, leave a little tag end on the wire like a 1/4-1/2 inch. If you break off the wire tag like you do with the hook end it will cut the knot under heavy tension. But with a little tag end on the wire it is a very reliable connection. You could also just barrel wrap the tag end a few times then break off the tag. If not, then be careful to not handle the wire at all when leadering your fish, grab the mono or fluorocarbon section.

    Tom ties the "haywire" very well.

    There are some problems with this rig, your bite leader and hook being the biggest. 60 pound single strand will not hold up, anything bigger than a bonnet head will bite right through it or snap is when it shakes its head. Single strand can get broken incredibly easy. This is why when its used, its doubled up and twisted around the other strand. its also why it's typically used in 274 pound test. 49 strand is flexible and very twist resistant and much less likely to simply break when a shark starts to shake his or her head or when they start rolling themselves up in your line. Sharks can chew through multistrand but it often lasts longer. Also, circle hooks are best used for sharks. They won't get gut hooked which means they'll survive upon release and they can be released faster.

      tdwpfanboy1994 I disagree. This rig has worked for 1000's of sharks. The sharks I fish for go right through multistrand wire. This rig works for most of the guides in the Florida Keys, but if you dont like it...use whatever works for you

      Never had problems with single strand, never once had it break. I’ve used tooth proof and mostly malin since I can find it cheaper. The only sharks capable of biting through it are very large tiger sharks and that isn’t common either, the wire has to lay on their teeth a certain way, and with a circle hook the shark will likely be biting down on only the hook most of the fight once the hook slides through the mouth and is set. The head shakes don’t kink it sharply enough to break it in fact I’ve caught dozens of big sharks on the same strand of wire and re-bending it back straight. Never even tried doubling two strands of it before. Some people who target strictly large tiger sharks do and then again there’s also many who don’t double it and just use a single strand of #18.

    This rig isn't bad, just switch the regular j hook to a circle hook.

    ***** just a question why the fluro leader if you are using braid? thanks

    • @SaltwaterExperience
      @SaltwaterExperience  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      mike walker We use Fluoro for 2 reasons. 1. It is less visible and more abrasion resistant that braid2. It is much easier to handle a fish with a leader rather than braid. Braid is so thin that it often cuts my hands
