This album from start to finish is chef’s kiss. It always takes me back to the moment it was released. I was 16 at the time and had been listening to them since I was 13. But when THIS happened It evoked something in me and still does. Tool has taken me places I can’t explain with words. True fans KNOW exactly what I mean. Seeing them live in my 40’s was a life altering moment, I felt like my life had come full circle and it was like I had reconciled my damaged teen self with who I am now. And all was right in “my” world. As I said above … it’s difficult to articulate with words.

To call the song "Intimate" without even listening or knowing the lyrics, wow! That speaks volumes to Tool's music, and the song's subject matter, but also Geebz' ability to pick up on both the nuances and also pulling back constantly to not "miss the forest for the trees". Killer video! :)

I do in fact talk like this in certain conversations but only when I get deep or philosophical or I'm talking about something I'm very passionate about (eg. TOOL lol). Tool music is deeply meaningful to me I've never heard anything like it. It's the only band I can listen to every day and never get tired of. Which I think is why I like to write or speak poetically about them, because their music is so deep and profound to me. Didn't mean to give off a pretentious vibe I'm just very passionate about Tool music lol and I figured that's why everyone was here in the comments section of a tool music dissection video. I was born in '88, discovered Tool when Schism was on the radio. Graduated high school in '06 and during the senior year of high school my two best friends were BIG in to Tool. I enjoyed Schism and Lateralus but they swore I would love H. but I just couldn't get in to it. After several years I finally got in to Aenima and H became one of my favorite songs by them, and it still is. Not sure why it took me so long to love but at least I have a story to tell.
And really, while I think Lateralus is a perfect, masterpiece album, I listen to Aenima more than any of their other albums. Eulogy, H, Forty Six and 2, Jimmy...there are just so many bangers

I was abused as a child by my mother, and when I had my own kids it was so very difficult to break that cycle, since physical discipline was the only method I knew and because I have a temper. @@jakew209 thanks, I shared because that's what this song is about for me. "As the snake is drowned, there's a look in its eyes, my fear begins to fade, recalling all of the times, I could have cried then; I should have cried then." That was me killing everything inside of me that was my mother, including getting treatment for my bipolar 1, clinical depression, PTSD, and anxiety; something my mother never did because it's not our way, and something my abuela never did because, again, it's not our way. We're Chiricahua and Mestizo-- our family endured the residential schools and the abuse of having the Indian beaten out of us by the whites at the schools, and that, method of discipline got passed down generation by generation and created a chain of rage and PTSD. It's serious, what multiple concussions as a child and a persistent fight/flight response does to your brain.
"As the walls come down, and there's a look in your eyes, my fear begins to fade, recalling all of the times I have died. I will die. It's alright. I don't mind."
That's me seeing my sons look at me with love, not fear, and that I'll happily kill that part of myself a million times to see that love there, that trust, and not the fear that I harbored for my mother all day, everyday, until I was 16 and realized I was 7 inches taller and 30lbs heavier than her and I fought back for the first time.
I have my father to thank for teaching me that you could love and trust a parent, that I didn't have to fear him. He died July 25th and I miss him so, so much. I miss his voice. I miss talking to him everyday. I miss his wisdom and I miss his love. He and my husband are the reasons I became a good mother and I'm glad I told him all of this and thanked him long before he died.

This song probably means more to me than any other song I've ever heard. My father had an abusive adopted father, then also turned out abusive to children he told he never wanted. I haven't spoken to him since I was 18, and likewise he hasn't ever tried to reach out either, which I'm fine with. I was so scared to have my own children, and I carried all that hurt around and still mostly do. When my wife and I had our first, I would lie awake at night dreading how I might eventually act. Don't get me wrong, kids are stressful, but after he came along, idk I still don't get it. How can you hold that little soft frail hand in yours and despise it? I pushed for a name starting with H as my nod back to this song. I'm glad he'll never know my father.

Enough can't be said for how incredible Tool is.... Truly a band's band. So organic, creative, and purposeful. Discovering Tool back in the mid 90's was a huge turning point in my life in multiple ways. Like Geebz said, they will continue to be a precedent setting band for generations to come. I'm so grateful to have found them and to have experienced them live multiple times over the years. My mother passed away just after the release of 10,000 days in '06, and she was similar to Maynard's mother in regards to her beliefs, so Wings for Marie 1 & 2 always hit me really hard. I know that so many others share that same feeling and experience.
Geebz, thank you so much for these breakdowns and reactions. It has been absolutely amazing to hear your insight. I have truly learned a lot already, and I have really enjoyed experiencing this Maynard journey with you. I know you haven't done anything from their Undertow album yet, so I would love to hear you decompose some of those (especially the title track). Looking forward to many more to come! Awwwright!! 🤙

Picture this: You’re 15-16 years old and already a huge Tool fan. Playing Undertow on repeat.
Stinkfist bursts onto the radio seemingly out of nowhere after waiting 2-3 years for anything new.
You run to the nearest Sam Goody and buy this Aenima (Anima? Enema?) album only knowing the one song, which is first in the track list.
You eagerly rip through Eulogy which is fuckin awesome, aggressive and angry but progressed from their former sound and then this song, H drops on you like a bomb.
It’s familiar Tool but within a deeper more vulnerable landscape. Then that beautiful, flowing, almost theatrical/soundtrack-like middle section surprises you. Maynard captures you with a newer, softer voice you really haven’t heard before.
At that moment you knew your favorite band was not only incredibly unique and uber talented, but quite possibly headed towards the greatness we are all celebrating today.
This song is so hypnotic and just a gorgeous trip. Thanks for the review

I've listened to Tool for 20 years or so, and while I never skipped this song, it wasn't one that I'd skip to either. Then I had my daughter in 2018, and knowing that this one was written around the anxiety Maynard had around his past ("the snake behind me hisses...") and his commitment to his newborn child ("my blood before me begs me..."), I learned the lyrics and sang it to her every night. I still do, and she sings along now, and asks for it in the car. This has become one of my favorites, and kind of a meditation for me with my children at bedtime. Nothing crazy, nothing overly complex, but simple, beautiful, heartfelt lyrics and great as always composition.

P.S. you seem to rarely mention the guitar’s presence on the tracks ( strictly an observation, you’re awesome man ), I find that neat since it’s the guitar playing that has had the strongest impact on me. I wasn’t a guitar player when i first heard them in the early 90s, I was more interested in the drums and the bass. After hearing them at the time though it was the guitar’s presence on the tracks that hit me so hard.

I appreciate all you do man, this, of all the other Tool songs have changed meanings for me throughout the years. WHen this album came out, I just started freshman year of Highschool, and all the love/heartbreak and overall awkwardness of coming of age, at that time really resonated with me lyrically as a break-up song. "The snake behind me hisses What my damage could have been My blood before me begs me Open up my heart again" meaning to me at the time, as someone who no longer is in love, and trying to move through that, and to go through that pain, to "open my heart again" to love.
As the years progress, and having kids of my own this song has completely changed meanings, looking at your child seeing that innocent being, who depends on you, and who needs one to "open their heart again" to be there for their needs, and to show them unconditional love. In the process to completely recognize your own past childhood and what I as a kid needed, it's really a powerful song in that light - "Without the skin
    Beneath the storm
    Under these tears
    The walls came down
And the snake is drowned and
As I look in his eyes
My fear begins to fade" having a pure innocent being who 100% needs their parent to let their guard down. Children are wonderful, unconditional love beings.
