      They could almost certainly get back down on the Starliner and be completely fine. It is WAY safer than any of the Apollo missions ever were. The issue is that NASA has raised their safety standards immensely since the 70s and now the probability of loss of crew needs to be less than 1 in ~300. If they needed to leave due to an issue with the ISS they could fly home on Starliner and be fine. The RCS has plenty of redundant thrusters.

      Apollo 13 wasn’t this kind of rescue. The spacecraft was returning to earth either way within a week. The only question was if anyone would still be alive or survive re entry.
      This requires a new spacecraft to come get them. That wasn’t an option for Apollo13, they had no such craft that could rendezvous with them to bring them home. They wouldn’t have survived, hell they could still be orbiting out there somewhere today if that was their only chance.

    Brett, It isn't a matter of asking for help. There are no open docking ports for new transport crafts.
    The space station has 8 docking ports. 4 for the USA, and 4 for Russia. Russian ports have a different design than ours, and 2 of the US ports are designed for cargo modules only. That means there are only 2 ports that can receive the SpaceX transport. Unfortunately, both of those ports are already ocuupied by crafts. One is filled with the broken boeing pod, and the other is from SpaceX for the current US astronaughts that will be leaving in the fall.

      So I was wrong but it makes Brett's video even more blatantly disingenuous. The possible idea (which is supposed to be decided on fully this month) is to bring them on a scheduled "taxi" ride via spaceX which is scheduled for September. SpaceX would just have to leave 2 of their astronauts out of the incoming flight.
      So no, Noone is keeping SpaceX out of it...they were just still deciding with spaceX being one of the leading solutions.

    It is important to note that the astronauts are in no danger right now. The astronauts signed on to a 1/270 chance of a problem happening, and Boeing can’t guarantee that (maybe 1/200 or something). If they needed to come home they would just hop on and go and most likely nothing would happen. There is a slight concern that the thrusters will fail and the starliner would hit the space station on a subsequent orbit, but it is slight. It is still ridiculous as this has started to affect NASA’s schedule, but some of it is overplayed. Also, these astronauts have spent many months in space, so this is not hard too hard for them to deal with.

  • @MightyDrakeC
    @MightyDrakeC 27 วันที่ผ่านมา +36

    I'm not an expert, just a space and tech nerd. The situation is a little more complicated than Brett realizes.
    First, the Boeing space division and the Boeing aircraft division have essentially no overlap. They're completely separate divisions. The highest levels of management are the same, and yes, that does have an influence on the space division. But, what happens in one is pretty well separated from the other. For practical purposes, you can think of them as different companies.
    Next, yes, Boeing is having problems with their brand new spacecraft. That happens with most new designs. Many people are forgetting that a SpaceX Crew Dragon, IOW, the one that was designed to carry people, blew up during a test on the ground in 2019, only five years ago. This was the same vehicle that had flown the first unmanned test to the ISS. This was before SpaceX had launched their first manned mission, and therefore has passed from most peoples' notice. I'm pretty sure, no company is perfect.
    Some people will point out that Boeing was given much more money for their share of the Commercial Crew Program than SpaceX. While, we never want to waste money, having a viable second vehicle certified for operation to the ISS is worth some extra money. Just recently, SpaceX had a second stage fail while launching a satellite. That had the potential of disrupting crewed flights by SpaceX. In this case, they were able to track down the cause quickly, and it will not affect the next crewed launch. But, something could happen to another upcoming flight that will cause problems.
    Finally, the Boeing Starliner spacecraft currently at the station is not completely useless. If there were an emergency aboard the ISS, Wilmore and Williams would use the Starliner for an evacuation and landing. The issues with the Starliner are important. They have a higher risk than NASA is comfortable with. But, it is not a certain death trap. It's very likely that it would land safely.
    But, outside of an emergency, since there are viable alternatives to risking the astronauts on the Starliner, NASA is exercising an abundance of caution.
    There are three scenarios they're considering:
    1) Launch the next SpaceX Crew Dragon with only two astronauts, leaving two seats open for Wilmore and Williams. That's the scenario that will get them down in Feb.
    2) Put padding on the "floor" of a Crew Dragon and bring them down with a four-person SpaceX crew. It's not as crazy as it sounds. They would be just as safe there as the other passengers, outside of some really wild malfunction. They could do this with the SpaceX Crew Dragon that is currently docked at the station and get them down with the current SpaceX crew, in a month or so. Or, wait and do that with the next flight, again coming back in Feb.
    3) The Crew Dragon was designed to accommodate up to seven seats. Potentially, they could add two seats to the next flight, so that they could bring up the four who are planned, and still have room to bring the two back. I haven't heard why this is considered the least likely scenario. Apparently, it can technically hold seven, but isn't really expected to actually do that. At least not in the near term. To me, this sounds like a great idea. There must be some reason why they're probably not going to do that.
    On top of these technical issues, there's also a lot of politics involved. Boeing is a huge supplier to the government, with military systems. And, there's the lobbying done by their aircraft division. They have a lot of pull, due to being one of the largest aircraft manufacturers in the world. Boeing has a presence in a lot of Congressional districts, which gives them a lot of political leverage. There's a lot of political pressure to help Boeing look good. That does have an effect on NASA.
    But, my impression is that NASA is mostly wanting to help Boeing succeed for mostly good technical reasons. They really would like a second system to service the station. They really would like an actual real competitor to SpaceX, for the good of the space industry as a whole. I could be wrong, but that's how I see it, as a layman.

    • @MightyDrakeC
      @MightyDrakeC 27 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I researched it, and apparently, after the initial design was debuted, with seven seats, NASA aired concerns about the G forces during landing. NASA asked that SpaceX change the angle of the seats, to reduce risk to the occupants. That change meant that there wasn't room for more than four seats.
      So, it turns out they can't add extra seats.

      @@nogames8982 Politics is certainly a factor. The stated goal was to have _two_ commercial crew transport providers, and they are _almost there._ So there is a lot of pressure to make Starliner work well enough. Money, time and prestige have been sunk into it. Any credible third bidder would need a _looong_ lead time to deliver and test a new crew vehicle. Asking the Russians is a non-starter these days.
      Finally, this situation is not an urgent emergency. This is not Apollo 13. It's more of an embarrassing inconvenience for now.

    There is even more to this story then given in this video. There is only 2 International Docking System Standard ports for The SpaceX Dragon or Boeing Starliner to dock to. Right now both are in use and they cant just jetison the Starliner because they did not install the starliner autonomous return software (no Astronauts on the ship to control it), despite having used it on a previous mission. So now they have to install the software which Boeing have said will take weeks. They can't return the crew on the Dragon currently attached because then there is no emergency ship for the other astronauts currently on the ISS. This is a big stuff up by Boeing, and has now had an ongoing effect on future mission launch dates.
    To summarise, even if Elon Musk wants to return these Astronauts, he can't until they jetison the Starliner by autonomous return.

    Getting pretty tired of the dump on Boeing routine. It's not like they are stranded out in the wilderness with nothing, they don't need "rescuing." It's not like they are lost in Antarctica and are gonna die if they don't get help. Just reading about what is actually wrong with the Starliner capsule, there is nothing indicating that it couldn't make it back in its current state. The thrusters that failed are only 6 out of 28 maneuvering thrusters, these are not used for de-orbiting. They are likely keeping the Astronauts there out of an abundance of caution. Also, I keep seeing everyone calling for SpaceX to "rescue" them, however, SpaceX has been having issues with their rockets recently as well, but they aren't Boeing so people don't care. Boeing certainly has problems, don't get me wrong, but it is being way overblown because of a couple high profile blunders on the commercial side. Every time a plane runs off the runway or loses a tire on the landing gear etc. The media uses that to dunk on Boeing even though 9/10 times Boeing had nothing to do with it, and Airbus planes have the same things happen just as frequently, but it doesn't get reported because they aren't Boeing. People also ignore the military side of Boeing completely, where these issues don't exist. Boeing has a leadership problem at the moment, Calhoun was never qualified to be CEO, and there isn't really anyone on the board that is competent enough to do the job either. I don't know how good the new guy will be, but just from looking at his background he does seem like he'd be better than Calhoun.

      Yeah, at least not openly.
      Then again, astronauts are considered envoys of humanity. In a dire situation (not quite yet...) any citizen on Earth has a duty to render aid to astronauts in distress. On-site physical aid, that is, if and when the opportunity arises.

      Why would they? US has the ability to do the same thing for less money with SpaceX, if it comes to that.
