I'm an old fart, my fires long since spent, but I'm a happy man again just knowing she exists out there some where. Don't need to know no more than that. :D
New Year’s Day, 2024. Just heard Khruangbin for the first time this past Saturday while sitting in a bookstore. Khruangbin every day for 2024 and beyond.
I think the coolest thing about this band is that people say "Oh DJ is so rock solid on the timing" but he and the band are speeding up and slowing down but staying locked in with each other. I just used a metronome counter on the last song and when he starts by himself, he's at 90. But later in the song it ends up way down at 85 bpm. Nerdy thing as a drummer, but that coolest thing about locking into a groove is that it ebbs and flows, but the band stays together. That's such a lost art. They speed up and slow down with one another but they are never off kilter which is the sign of a truly great live band. That's a lost art in an age where everyone is recording by themselves in a computer program. The chemistry that comes with staying locked with each other through Mark's insane guitar playing and what not is truly awesome. The music is alive and it feels very real. It's not tied to a perfect machine. It's imperfect and human and I think that's why they're blowing up. Huge huge fan of these guys and I hope they continue to do great things.
@@Pouriya787 Because it's good music? I was simply saying that any band in a live setting tend to veer off tempo and it is the drummer's job to keep everyone else in tempo. Therefore, "you can basically say the same thing about and band. it's not that deep." Or maybe you're implying that having a robust tempo makes people attracted to your music? Ofc not. People are attracted to this music because they think it sounds good.
If you guys are wondering what makes this band sound so crazy and unique, I believe it is the non-traditional guitar style of Mark Speer. He plays in the rhythmically dominated style of many West African and Saharan guitarists of today which haven't become mainstream in the west yet. It is really fantastic and unlike anything really made before in the guitar scene, and I hope they keep pushing the envelope
I know this is an old comment, but I think you’re correct. Mdou Moctar has the same type of hammer on and off rhythm style. Or…somewhat similar. Mark seems like a hybrid of funk, Anatolian rock, and desert blues, all wrapped up in a ball of awesomeness
this. Srsly, i'm just frkin obsessed. I just found them about 2 wks ago & iv'e not stopped digging for and re-watching every live set and interview on yt..wondering where TF i've been...jeesh. The juice is real in these three...same basic set 8 times all over the world & the guitarist plays 'em all just a little different and never boring or rote...and the bass and drums are rock solid holding it down.. just brilliant. Now .. of course im thinkin'..."what else is out there i'm missing?" ... time to dig.
First heard them playing a song with Leon Bridges and I was like who is playing GUITAR ??? Damn !! And that’s what started my Khruangbinge and didn’t look back 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶❤️👍🏼🤠
good ear! i was here before Leon, and i remember getting so worried that having an actual singer would drown out the wonder that is Khru! Glad to see they’re still getting noticed even with Leon (who is amazing)
I saw them live at Otis and in Brooklyn for their first NYC show. I remember pausing and looking at the faces of the fans. All different ages group hypnotized by the rift of the guitar
Been to a million shows since the 90s when I was a kid. Khruangbin is not only one of the best live shows I’ve seen I felt like I was on another planet watching them live. Life changing experience!! I LOVE KHRUANGBIN 💜💚
I just discovered this group 2 days ago. Now I'm addicted. I'm a bass player, and Laura is quickly becoming my inspiration. Such awesome, clean, grooving basslines, I just can't get enough.
Allegedly, Mark gave her a copy of Scientist Wins the World Cup and she says that's where her style started. There's a lot of dub in her bass playing. Have fun!
Love you Khruangbin... Just on a Wednesday morning tear through all the videos I can find... Music you think will make you sleepy but instead you’re energized, songs you think will get repetitive but then you can’t stop listening. The Universe Smiles Upon You!
Honestly, I love their music and it's the _main_ reason I watch this. However, I can't deny that Laura Lee hopping and bouncing in the wind with a smile keeps me hooked.
this is incredible. music needs space to be digestible and enjoyable. Mark is playing a LOT of guitar, all the time, but he makes it real tasty. this is the way. pure virtuosity. the whole band is magnificent
Even though it's clear that the PA guy was taking a break during the recording of this video and the mic levels are politely said just slightly off, this after the NPR Tiny Desk Concert is by far one the best live captations of Khruangpin's music which I could find from TH-cam. These people stretch the notion I have about Rock Music in to whole new levels. The entire band is also very sexy. The way Laura Lee dips her hips on some Bass notes, the way how Speer just casually makes his Stratocaster echo and the way how DJ places his timing just rubs my brain in all of the right possible ways.
I just love the synergy you all have in the first song. The sound just hops and rolls along. Watching Laura Lee sashay to the hip beat of her bass, while wearing the colorful outfit swaying so lively just brings joy to my heart. DJ on drums rocks such a steady beat, someone once said he had a metronome in front of him but another said, "He is a metronome"! Love the wigs. I think it allows you to be the alter egos you want to be, with nothing hindering your freedom to create. You guys are just so stinking hip!
And extend the love of World Music -- People Everywhere (Still Alive) has a strong West African / Desert Blues feel to it, as it should being a cover of Tinariwen from Mali / Algeria / Azawad
I just stumbled upon this band a little more than a week ago. I can't get enough of them. They are so entertaining and so damn good. And the guitar player is just amazing!

Unbelievable great music. Usually I don't like instrumental music, but in this case I love it. She is so beauty like the quality of the music :-) And the drummer is a machine, great too. Cool. And the guitar work I so groovy. And I learned today, that especially the first song here "People Everywhere" keeps you awake, when you have to do boring work like fill in long spreadsheets. Perfect. Cool music and getting work done. Thank you, Khruangbin
