    The RC Aircraft guy was correct to a point.
    What you're looking for is Venturi Effect cooling through the entire bay. The bike was originally designed for combination cooling of a radiator AND air cooling over the entire engine assembly, so even if all the cowling is totally removed, if the engine assembly is sitting in a static air pocket, cooling is diminished. The outflow needs to be increased and the overall engine bay airflow needs to be upped.
    You might look at the feasibility of fabricating an underbelly airscoop to increase frontal bay flow, not just radiator airflow. Then look at a pair of small rads, such as Sportster or Spyder RT units with the intakes fully ducted and mounted directly at the body side air intakes so as to remove the flow obstruction at the front of the engine assembly.
    As for my experience, I've been a biker for over 60 years and was a National Bureau of Standards Lab Rat who worked in the Physical Dimensional Laboratory, doing a lot of work with Fluid Dynamics, which puts this in my Ball Park.
    I really want to see you guys succeed with this beast, and I look forward to seeing you get all the bugs worked out of it.

      I have done a lot of R/C flying since I was a kid and the rule of thumb was the exit should be double the intake.

      @@craigwright5585 That's true, but from my experience in the Lab, the flow path is just as important. You have to look at the cumulative flow rate and path, not just the intake and exhaust volumes. I'd love to get into your rig with a few temp sensors and flow gages to see what the interior flow rates and point temps run at around the drive train.

      @@WilliamEades_Frostbite Agreed!! It never seemed to be overly crucial when it came to R/C, but the odd time baffles would need to be added to direct the airflow, not unlike full size aircraft.

      He's right. I expected the fan to do nothing. It isn't helping much if at all because it has no place to draw cool air from. The intake side is blocked.

      @@craigwright5585 My point exactly. I spent a good bit of time last night thinking about the bike's design. If you look at the bike as an aircraft fuselage and think about the planar flow paths, what came to mind was that since cooling becomes less efficient as speeds increase, you're looking at flow stall along the sides of the bike. Where the intakes sit are very likely ending up in a low pressure zone created by the stalled air zone rising up off the side wheel sponsons wing root as your speed rises.
      I came up with 2 possible options. Both involve glass work at the wing root leading edge.
      One is an intake scoop above the root, and if you want to keep the overall design of the bike intact, place the scoop below the root like on an F111.
      To test the theory, you could use inexpensive AC or Dryer ducts taped and zip tied in place so their openings are right at the root leading edge.
      You could use the old "Tape and Yarn" trick with someone driving beside you videoing the bike as you increase speed to see exactly what the airflow does and work from there.

    I owned a Pulse for about 3 years. I installed a Kawasaki 750 zx 7 motor. Plenty of power. I mounted the original radiator up in the under side of the nose with a scoop. Never over heated. Every Pulse I saw with the Gold wing engine had the radiator mounted outside on the side of the body in a housing. They never overheated. I never saw a vehicle that attracted so much attention. People would follow me home just to see what it was. I sold it because it wasn't really a practical vehicle for everyday use.

      ​@@BikesandBeardsMy Kandi go-kart has a small radiator with a fan that turns on by a thermostat when temps get high enough. I noticed the newer Go-karts they're producing no longer even have a radiator at all, but an OIL COOLER! Does the job well enough to omit the radiator!! Something to think about and consider maybe for extra cooking. I put a pretty chrome tubular V shape oil cooler on the front of the down tubes of my Harley Davidson frame and it works great. The V shape is stylish and fits with the flow of the bike.. It might look right at home on your deathtrap machine. 🤣🤷🤷

      I think I'd just make sure that the air was blowing through the radiator. Possibly with a thermostatically controlled fan to help from time to time.

    I think the bicycle guy was right. A bigger air outlet than the inlet would create a vacuum, making a suction effect and thereby increased airflow.

      Nothing to doo with vacuum. Hot air expands, you need a bigger outlet to flow as much mass out as is flowing in. If your inlet and outlet are the same area, your inlet is too big, which is very important in air-cooled aircraft engines, where a smaller intake means less drag.

      I don't think having a larger air exhaust would create a vacuum. it would need something forcing the air out to do that and the only thing creating pressure would be the intake. The smaller exhaust would limit the air flow though.

    I am one of the grandsons of James Bede, the creator. He always talked about redesigning the chassis and using a higher hp motorcycle engine. He has passed, but would have loved to see this! I have been around many of these and also love this idea!
    I am sure you know, but the Pulse owners get together over Labor Day weekend in Indiana

      I had a friend that bought one BD5 kit, but never finished, he sold it to a Swiss gentleman who also owned a Rutan Very EZ, don't know if he finished the 5.

      Jim was a visionary. I was a teenager, bought a used BD-5 kit and built it back in the 80's. After going for a "check ride" with a CFI to see how I liked flying, I realized I didn't, and couldn't. Sold the BD-5 to a restaurant owner who wanted to hang it up inside. Now this Pulse.... that would be just my style. a GROUND based BD-5 lol 👍👍

    its a water cooled engine so get the radiator working out in the fresh cool air, its clearly blocked by the seats etc and just sitting in a stale air bubble.

    The guy on the bicycle was absolutely right about the outlet! However the best solution would to ditch that radiator and go with 2 separate slightly smaller radiators mounted right at the opening of those air inlets. In addition to this you could add a small oil cooler anywhere it would get airflow. The other option is to mount a radiator on the undercarriage with a small airdam feeding it. Although the twin radiators on the inlets would be easiest along with small electric fans.

      put another radiator in the nose where you can feed air directly through it. The one in there can handle idle engine, so just need one for higher revs.
      Also OIL Cooler. Remove extra heat through the oil. Got out of a ticket driving on the shoulder. Told cop I was overheating, and bike was pinging, hissing, and groaning for me.

    So the vent in question on the side is a variant of a NACA duct, designed to create a low pressure zone forcing higher ambient air into a volume. Having the radiator at least at an oblique angle would serve you better than a glancing blow, but more importantly (or as important), routing the air out the bottom behind the rad into the airstream between vehicle and road will help create more airflow 'ramming' in. Two smaller rads you can place in the airstream would be the ideal situation.
    Add: Almost forgot, the duct you guys added on the side more hindered the function of the NACA duct than helped, as it doesn't work like a scoop. It is totally reliant on air passing over it and the shape of the inlet.

    Stop trying to manage the airflow inside - reposition the radiator to where the air is already freely flowing. Out to the side or in the front, but leave the new scoops and direct that airflow over the engine. And redesign the exit holes and the vent slats. Motorcycles position the radiator so it gets a lot of airflow, but this vehicle hid the radiator and cut undersized and ill-positioned side vents, and was guided by aesthetics in designing the exit holes.

    I'm an RC pilot; the guy was right. Outflow vents needs to be larger. Otherwise the Electronic Speed Controller overheats; the battery overheats, then the battery vents with fire. However, I'd guess the radiator isn't getting airflow THROUGH it.

      Correct. It doesn't help much if the airflow goes behind the radiator, especially with a smaller outlet. If it was bigger, then it would help with pulling the air through radiator, but the wall right in front of it doesn't allow it.

      Mount a Taurus electric radiator fan on the back side of the radiator with on off switch on the dash. Two vents in front of the radiator instead of behind it would help.

    My buddy in early 80s bought a red one of these. We took it for a spin one night after church, cruising with Phil Collins' "In the air tonight" blasting over the screaming Yamaha engine behind my seat. Sketchy ride, but an exhilarating and surreal moment.

    I would love to see you fabricate two big scoops similar to the harrier jump jet for the cooling system. The position of your air intake is your biggest problem it needs to be nearly a foot further forward. Delete the rear seat and move the firewall forward as it is your biggest obstruction of your airflow, move the intake scoops forward, swap out the radiator for something bigger rotate it so it runs linear with the bike and duct the scoops so they aim in toward it.

    IMHO, the cooling issue is caused by the radiator not being in the airflow. It appears to be located in the same spot as a stock GSXR and has the hot exhaust underneath. That’s fine when the only obstruction is normally the front wheel and fender (which actually works as an airfoil directing cooling air into the radiator) but when it is now behind the firewall of the rear seat, you have no airflow. Your solutions need to be to either direct air onto the radiator by either pulling it in with more complex ducting and fans or the easier solution is to make a split radiator system with one on either side of the engine (think Honda VTR / RC51 / or VFR800) and place those radiators into the airflow you already have with the ducting you modified already. You’re going to need some good sized radiators as it’s a big engine but it’s totally doable and would give you something you can use even in daily traffic. If you really want to get crazy, put the radiators in the wing roots or in the nose (with appropriate openings cut) where there is good high pressure zones to force the airflow through them. Anyway, it looks like a ton of fun!

      I don't know much about motorcycles, but couldn't this be a thermostat not opening or a dead water pump? Or even air pockets? It sounds to me like perhaps the coolant isn't moving... So it doesn't matter how much air you put over the radiator.

    The person that said the air out has to be bigger than air in is 100% correct otherwise as you ram air in it pressurizes the space instead of flowing through creating A "Dead air space" that prevents even new air from coming into the engine space due to the pressure. For an example take a 1l bottle poke a 1/2 inch hole in the bottom and blow as hard as you want through the top and see how much flow you have and how much pressure you have. (Flow good for cooling pressure bad) even on that 1l bottle a 1-1 inlet to outlet hole size will build up pressure as you blow into it. There is much much more to the subject but that is the simple example.

    Notwithstanding any issues with airflow direction inside the engine bay, or the radiator location itself, one key reason to make the cooling exit area greater than the intake is that when air picks up heat it expands, so the volume leaving the enclosure is greater than the volume entering it.
    Cool project, completely barking mad but still a cool project.

    Attach radiators to both sides and equip them with fans. Similar to the Honda VTR 1000 Superhawk. BTW: If your support wheels fall off on the highway, nothing will happen at first. Then a motorcycle WITH support wheels becomes a motorcycle WITHOUT support wheels. The gyroscopic forces of the two wheels on the vehicle's axle provide the same stabilization as any other motorcycle. You only fall over when you stop.

    Bike guy was absolutely right. Exit vent has to be much bigger than the inlet. If not the air intake backs up and the air can't go through the what ever.

    Worked on one of these in Elgin, IL when I was a bike mechanic during college. They are the hardest thing to work on, and good luck finding parts. They are fun and eye catching though. As for the radiator issues, use the R1250GS radiators and put them in the vent positions themselves.

    The Pulse was built in Owosso, Michigan and name changed to Owosso Motor Car Co. The original Pulse had Yamaha's air cooled engines but had cooling problems and switched to water cooled engines.. The Pulse was it one of the Back to the Future movie..

    I would suggest wrapping the exhaust pipe with titanium exhaust wrap. Will keep the heat down in the enclosed engine bay A LOT. I don't know if it will help the overheating issues but it will definitely help a whole heck of a lot.
    You might also be able to get a small electric fan and mount it in front of the radiator, blowing air through it.

    This might sound crazy, but relocating the radiator into one of the side-wings might be the way to do it. (Look at how some WWIII aircraft did wing-mounted radiators.) And then the main body can be cleaned up again for aero.

    The guy on the bike may have been talking about airplane baffle design where you want a certain pressure difference across the cooling fins to ensure you get the proper airflow across the fins to cool the engine. Some have cowl flaps that opens the aft section where the air exits the plane to increase airflow through the cooling fins during high power low speed operations such as takeoff and climb. The system in your bike is setup different and it sounds like the air from the NACA ducts isn’t even going to the radiator at all and the air path isn’t sealed so all of the air must pass through the radiator.

    That vehicle answers a question I would have NEVER asked. That said, why in the world would anyone design and the build a vehicle like that one without at least looking into engine temp issues, clutch issues, and fuel mileage compromise due to using a ridiculous badass Suzuki engine?
    That is a vehicle that someone else owns, you take a picture and be happy you don't own it.

    If your air exhaust opening is larger than the inlet, you create a low-pressure area in the rear that will increase airflow through the space, actually sucking air through it, in the same an exhaust augmenter works on an airplane engine exhaust system.

    My dad owned the 24th Pulse autocycle ever made. In fact, when my dad bought it, it wasn't called a "Pulse" yet. It was called the "Invader 2000", but the creator had legal issues with that name because Honda owned it, so it became "Pulse". His was white also, but after a funny incident where a Japanese tourist looked in his rear view mirror and thought a jet landed behind him, and slammed on his brakes (because of course you should slam the brakes if a plane lands behind you (sarcasm)) causing the nosecone to need replacement, my dad had it painted burgundy. I was curious to locate it and see if I could buy my dad's Pulse and fix it up for myself. I found it on a Pulse registry. It's still the same color with the same custom leather interior my dad had installed, but the frame, engine, and body are too far gone to be salvaged without just rebuilding the whole thing from scratch unfortunately.
    *Edit* While watching the video, I'm having flashbacks of the overheating issues it had. We had to modify the air vents on the sides over the engine to have scoops rather than vents, and we also installed vents on the body on top of the engine as well. It helped, but it would still get hot. They originally had a Yamaha 400cc engine. That fuel switch on the exterior was added by someone, and wasn't OEM. Ours also didn't have a clutch issue like that one, but ours also didn't have a reverse, and you had to be mindful of where you were parking it, or else you were going to be pushing it backwards. I drove this in high school, and I called it my "p***y mobile" because all of the girls wanted to date me. We got pulled over by cops just because they wanted to check it out. People took pics of us from their cars, and our Pulse was in the local newspaper (for the funny accident story) as well as The Dallas Morning News as we had the first Pulse in the DFW area. It turned a lot of heads.

    You need tons of vents at the rear for the hot air to escape.. you have trapped all the hot air inside the structure.. Think about how a motorcycle works..its open everywhere.. air is rushing by and taking away the heat.. you have stopped all the air from flowing past and taking away heat.. and there is nowhere for the now hot air to escape.. Looks like you got the clutch going.. I saw you were addressing it but I must ,have missed the part where you say if the repairs worked. very cool action. cant wait to see the ride home.

    The cooling is maybe simpler than you think. You can move the radiator itself to another place. Yes, remove the fluid, length the hoses, refill. But then you have severa options for it. Use 2 smaller radiators, one on each intake hole. or move the radiator "under" the floor, so it will get straight wind.
    Or make a new hole in the underbody with a 3rd scoop, and put a funnel-hose straight to the rad, and let the side ones cool the rest of the engine.
    IF you have to do another Motorcycle swap for that GSX, try to use an old Honda Goldwing. These have reverse gears and a nice flat 4 / 6, depending on the year of build.

    Craig, if something goes into your ear, the worst thing you can do is jam your finger into your ear to possibly push it down farther. Just push into your ear from the outside. That's your safest bet

    I built a Pulse from the last "kit" that Owasso Motors sold, as they were going out of business. I used my 1200 Goldwing which is water cooled, and still there wasn't enough cooling. The glass windshield is irreplaceable, and the canopy slides break easily. Yours is the first iteration with the 1100 air cooled, and a tail fin. Later versions used water cooled bikes and lost the rear fin.... as shown in Back To The Future. The most dangerous part is that the side trailer tires don't ride on the ground. At highway speed turns, those tires must go from 0 to high speed, which throws the whole thing off balance. I lowered my side wheels, but it wasn't the same fun after that.

    I always think of it as air being like water, it flows where ever it isn't stopped(high pressure flows to low pressure)... so the engine bay gets full high pressure air, and it doesn't flow out fast enough out the back/bottom, then it will go out the front, and you get almost no change in air flow at all, even as your speed and outside airflow/air-pressure does increase...
    It's like a cup with a hole in the bottom, no matter how much or how hard you push water in the top, it will mostly overflow out the top (unless it's a sealed system that can be pressurized).
    Honestly, with the airports where they are, I think you'd almost be better served flipping your scoop to create a low pressure vent to draw air out through them, instead of trying to use it as a ram... because it seems like it may be creating an air dam instead after a certain speed...
    But what do I know... just some dude on the internet. lol

    I remember seeing one in the mid 80's. With the original drivetrain, it was supposed to get 70 mpg. It also cost more than a car. So you get no A/C or reverse. That killed it.

    Just wanted to say - I know lubrication is required for drilling metal, but I figured it was some fancy specially formulated oil. I never knew what to use so I've used PB Blaster, 3-in-1, or WD-40.
    Glad to see I wasn't totally wrong, the "pros" use PB too!

    If the diagram is accurate, then the intake air is coming in behind the radiator. So either build a box around the radiator to force air through it in the correct way, OR, replace that radiator with two smaller ones mounted across the intakes.

      Dirt bike radiators might do the trick. Designed to be effective even at low speeds despite their small size. My buddy used the ones off his blown YZ450f for extra cooling on his drift car that runs methanol. He just mounted them horizontally underneath the car and put two 140mm PC fans on each of them, no more low speed overheating issues but it did take some redneck engineering.

It brought back memories to me that Volkswagen van I had purchased from a friend and never driven a four-speed before and I was terrified on the first Hill.     AKA the "Pulse Lightstar". Designed by Jim Bede. I have 2 aircraft designed by Jim. A BD-5 and a Grumman Yankee. Jim passed a few yrs ago, but his family still tinkers with them around Akron, Ohio. I visited them a couple yrs ago.
    Btw,..the bicycle riding guy was correct about the exhaust air size. Ideally it needs to be able to exit as much, if more than, what comes in. But cooling has been a recurring problem with Bede designs.
