- Black Clover has one of my favorite deep casts in all of shounen, but I actually think it's one of its more visible characters that's truly underappreciated. Yuno in many ways is set up as another mainstay alongside Asta, but I feel as if no one really treats him like an important part of the story.
If anything it's mostly complaints and laments that sum up what I call the "Yuno Problem." That he's unlikable and not a compelling rival because he often powers up off-screen. Personally, I think Yuno is perfect for Black Clover's story and that's why I want to set the record straight about him right now.
This video's a bit more outside my usual wheelhouse, but hopefuilly it can help you learn to love Yuno as well.
EDIT: It's also VERY funny that the Black Clover Manga decided to go all-in on Yuno stuff as soon as I uploaded this video. Maybe it's a sign.

I totally agree with the fact that tabata could have gone the easy route with Yuno and made him and edgy jerk but instead made him a supportive friend. I really appreciate how he is always competing with Asta and even defending him when others insult him and saying, “don’t underestimate asta, he is my rival”
Yuno’s aloof and cool badass personality is partially a mask, just like how asta’s smiling and screaming confidence sometimes hides depression and despair. I’m not saying that their personalities are inauthentic, but that they’re both clearly trying to be what they want to be instead of what others imagine them as (Asta, weak and despairing over his powerlessness) or what they formerly were (Yuno, a crybaby)

I disagree about Asta surpassing Yuno in the start of the Spade arc, because if He hasn't the black bulls with him He would have died in the first attack of Dante (literally the first attack, He only got alive because of Rouge). So the result of Dante's fight was because of the team work, not because of Asta himself.
This is fair! I guess I was more or less coming at it from his power after making the arm trade off with Liebe, but you are not wrong! I think there's probably a compelling argument to make that a healthy Vangeance and Yuno could have given Zenon a run for his money if they weren't trying to protect everyone.

Why do people act like Yuno doesn’t train, when he honestly trains as much as asta just cuz u can’t see it doesn’t mean he’s not training and doesn’t deserve his powers. People say yuno’s powers are all aspull yet Asta got a grimoire out of nowhere which should be impossible cuz he has no magic at all yet when Yuno gets a spell or power up it’s an aspull, like how?

Yuno is my favorite fictional character of all time, and the reason for that is how much I relate to his personality. Going from a crybaby kid to an aloof adolescent with major goals is just something that I personally identity with, which is why the hate he gets for "lacking personality" has always bothered me. I believe he is a well written parallel to Asta and like you said, although they take different paths towards their goal...both Asta and Yuno are similar in their drive and equally worthy of respect.

I want to see more of Yuno - he is badass...Asta has not surpassed him, Asta would not have done so well in the last battle without Yami and the Black Bull gang. Yuno is caring. However I like your balanced commentary. Yuno is my favourite and feel we could do with seeing Asta less and developing Yuno's role in the series more.
Yuno the more I think about it, is not really a badass - he is just reflective, quiet and measured.

It is hilarious but as character 10% screen time Yuno in Spade arc ->>>>90% screen time Asta in whole manga. He simple has a loses or сhalenges in the story (family, his country, place, guild + he will obvious have personality crisis coz he Spade prince but was educated in Clover and etc) when Asta in the same as stone like the same character from chapter 1-3 (he only become more stronger but as character he has 0 progression)

You know what’s the problem of Black Clover after I finished watching it? It’s not the “bad” animation that most people say . It’s most people of the fandom of Black Clover is commenting or replying their thoughts or opinions in a bad, rude way. Sure everyone has their opinion, but I think most of them take it too far, they doesn’t respect each other … well most of them. Most of them -> are pointing good things of their favorite characters or the characters they like and keep pointing bad things of the characters they don’t like in a rude way , to let the characters they like to shine ( or to change ) or to show other people who doesn’t have the same opinions as them that they’re right -> in a disrespectful, bad and rude way🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️. That’s the only problem I see from Black Clover 😞.
This video was too early because the manga did an AMAZING job with Yuno as a character. I truly didn't give a shit about Yuno but after the last few chapter, damn he grown in me, I like him very much now. I hope he won't be sidelined in the future because he is truly a great character now.
The problem With Yuno is that Tabata made him an obstacle that Asta needs to overcome, not a person With flaws and strenghts, at least at The begining(we only saw him show emotion in The flashbacks), we dont see him train, we dont really know what he thinks outside being wizard king, we dont see much how he behaves With his squad unlike Asta, and he doesnt have enough screen time, even The freaking black bulls have more screentime than The deuteragonist who is supposed to be Yuno, Tabata needs to let Asta rest for a while and focus on Yuno only, get him and Arc, or a movie in which he learns more about himself and goes to the spade kingdom, we see way too much of Asta and too little of Yuno, thats the problem. Unlike Sasuke who has as much screen time as Naruto, or Todoroki who got a whole Arc about his family which explains the way he acts and thinks and his calm and confident personality balances Deku's pretty well, also Yuno being in a diferent team than asta makes it more dificult
Asta can't overcome Yuno on his own.
Asta need to this a lots of crutches (Light book, Light swords , OP devil that brake balance of BC world, tons of mentors, plot armor of Mc an etc) + Yuno only relies on himself , lol ( 0 help from others).
In reality Yuno is a person that better that you in everything (you can't equate people between whom there is no equality.It's like equating a sick cripple and a healthy person - an athlete)
Some people say he was supposedly going to be killed off in the beginning.
So maybe that would explain his lack of development for a while.

Agree I want to see more of Yuno and how he develops in the team to get people's respect. Yeah the Black Bulls are funny but Yuno is a Badass and he does not get enough time. Also I hated the stupid little stories they put in - such as the Charmy mushroom dream stuff - they could have focussed on Yuno.

Yuno is my favorite character and Luck is a close second. Yuno is a very unique side character and although I would love to see more of Yuno's strength building I understand that this isn't the Yuno show it's the Asta show and even still Yuno is shown a lot in the story, also I know that this video is old and a lot of info that we have gotten wasn't known a year ago but Yuno isn't "naturally talented" Yuno has been practicing and training using magic that isn't even his (wind magic) but is someone else's magic ever since he was a young child, his magic is actually star magic which he is still learning how to master and he's also still learning how to master wind magic as well. Putting out an updated version of this video would be great.
I feel like the whole royal thing is a set up so in the end both Asta and Yuno can be Wizard Kings of their own respective countries but thats just a thought i've had

Yuno is supposed to be this kind of character that is gifted with pretty much everything. The entire series is building up a fight between Asta and Yuno for the wizard king position from the very beginning. I hope it will be a epic fight like Naruto and Sasuke's final confrontation. Though it will be Asta who'll eventually stand on top, not just because he's the protagonist but also because he is the narrative of the story . It will be the most satisfying victory Asta will have. Asta will have an awesome comeback that'll overshadow everything. Yuno just gets power up after the other but I was never emotionally invested in him because he never really struggles with anything while the entire Black bulls have character arcs that tie in with the story and remain important even later on. Yuno's character itself though has nothing to offer as he is written to be Asta's exact opposite. He's made up to be something special but he just makes look Asta look better. Right now he doesn't even has a solid reason to fight Lucius since there's no build up between the characters. Even from the standpoint of Julius Novachrono who had far more interaction with the black bulls in general. In the Spade saga you had clear set ups and could actually root for him. The fight with Zenon was great and I'm pumped to see it in the anime but it was pretty much his only notable obstacle to overcome in the series . We have never seen his relationship to William or anything that makes us feel for the golden dawn in general. His teammates Klaus and Mimosa are far more intrigued by Asta than they are with him. The idea of Yuno being the prince of Spade is interesting but Tabata never cared for Yuno enough as a character to give him more of a characterisation besides wanting to become the wizard king just for the sake of it. His royal background only made sense in terms of his immense mana and next power up but character-wise it added nothing to him. The original spade people are selfishly putting him into a role he doesn't even care about and the reappearance of his mother again didn't give his character anything. Of course he wouldn't feel anything for the people of spade kingdom. His relationship with Sylph is just so bland since she liked Yuno from the get go while Asta and Noelle had to earn the respect of Liebe and Undine. In closing there's nothing wrong with liking this character but as I re-read the whole series I noticed that Yuno as a character serves a specific purpose with his healthier rivalry with Asta but he doesn't stand for the narrative and massage of black clover.
I honestly really like Yuno, at first I was eh about him but after reading the manga from start to finish (well up to date), I've enjoyed him a lot more. Definitely in my top 15 BC characters
The second most nuanced character in black clover with the best thematic fight in the series, William is nthe most nuanced imo, Yuno is just misunderstood.

i love black clover but ngl yuno is a pretty bad character on a normal basis. As a normal character he's pretty underdeveloped and is a living embodiment of Marty Stue. He's no Sasuke (no matter how much of derivative he is of sasuke) he lacks emotional complexity and his entire goal is a result of something that didnt even com from him, he just took his goal from asta.

And his emotions were shown throughout the series. But less screen time is the reason people don't understand it

He's plot convenient he was given elf mana amplification so that he can save asta from Kalus and Hammond attacks in ep 100
He's plot convenient that he got Spirit of Zepher , so that he could carry asta to Zagred so that Zagred could be killed.
He's plot convenient that Zenon attacked golden dawn (folded him and killed half his squad). Something like this doesn't happen with black bulls because of plot Armour.

I love black clover I really do but the problem with Yuno is that the story implies that he has train but in the mid of a fight always give him some bs power ups that comes out of no where sometimes and the excuse is his royalt or his love by mana like really like for the lates fight in the manga he has two grimoire,yeah it cool but honestly is power that out of nowhere and ik you can say hey asta is the same but not really almost all the fight asta has need help from his team. Just give him more time to master the power he has now instead of always give him power that just comes out of nowhere just so we can see him win think outside the box like that fight with Magna and Dante.

No-no, bro, you really really much downplaying on Yunos blood. It freaking ruined the whole messag of the black clover: blood is not something that defines you.
For the whole anime everything and everyone puts the thought of Yuno being so powerful while being a peasant through out throats. Too much. And what do we get? He is prince. The purest blood out there. And on the contrast with Magna and Zoro, it is really apparent that blood IS matters, that where did you came from defines you, it ruins not only his character, but the black clover as a whole, as it was its defined message.
And to counterargument your opinion, I will list all the things that happened not because of the fact that Yuno tried, but because of what he was born with:
Instantly loved by everyone in the village
Got 4-leaf clover gremoir
Did not break a sweat in joining golden dawn
Was chosen by the wind spirit
Has connection to mana so strong he can pull of almost anything with his magic
Did not participate in almost any serious elf arc fights but being honored and ranked as he was carrying the entire thing on his own
Was revealed to be a prince
Got second gremoir through the power of crying
And something I didn't remember or didn't get to in the manga
I get your idea of him being a wall to Asta he has to climb but it was so so poorly executed he became a joke. It had the potential to make him a neverending goal to Asta, but he's absent 80% of the anime and not only oppose little to no challenge to Asta himself, but anime just unironically starts praising him like he did so freaking much, like tries as hard as Asta does. And also he is a total diсk to Asta, it goes beyong just jerking with a pal, he's straight up bullying him. And you also belittle his attitude. He's not only cocky, he always arrogant and overconfident to everyone period, not breaking an emotion. So when two of the real and 50 of non-existent golden dawn members die and he rages all you want to say is "you just don't deserve to live"

We literally see flash backs of yuno training with asta , yuno played a major role in defending clover Kingdome from diamond evasion of course he will get love and yuno is most loved by others in his life bc of his magic talent , yuno growth of strength makes sense has literally been stated those who have a four leaf grimore will experience great luck and power , yuno being royal blood doesn't change his character just makes him more of an antithesis to asta , yuno being royal doesn't change the fact that he spent his entire life as peasant and doesn't change the fact he built his reputation as a peasant he and doesn't change the fact that he got acknowledged not bc of his royal background but bc he achieved results , yuno being royal makes more sense than a nobody who got lucky that he was born with high magic power

Because as character he's pretty much failed, you just don't believe him when he's at loss because he got everything without almost any labor. When he lost his non-existent friends in the Golden Dawn or when he's defeated by the bone dude, you just can't be compassionate to him. He loses there because there is a force even more unbalanced than he is, not because of him being weak or unmotivated or any other reason normal hero would have in this kind of situation

when Asta almost every time risk his life trying all his best, he is the true underdog, who deserved all of the power he got. @@Akizas28 well technically his character development happened kind of, yuno always used his calm and composed demeanor to hide or suppress his feelings of inadequacy,fear of failing and his over emotional side he dealt with a child , in his rematch with zenon in spade arc he was forced to face those feelings and accept his true self thus the phrase of bell his wind spirit "it feels like I am meeting the real yuno" ,plus we haven't heard anything about his relationship with the spade kingdom , so it's likely his character arc isn't over yet

I think people got this take because of how good the black bulls are as a cast, leaving yuno in the dust.
It isn't so much that they are a great cast. Since they are team mates of the main character, Tabata has written them up as lovable, over performing misfits and given them tons of scenery to chew. Outside of some anime only episodes, Yuno and the Golden Dawn are are mostly offscreen. Fans dismiss them as weak because they were decimated by Zenon and his disciples. However, they were the top squad in number of points and seem to be sent out a lot on missions so unless people think Julius Novochromono is blind and/or stupid, I doubt they are overrated.
@BMoreBrass, agree that because Yuno is not on the same team as Asta, as was case with Naruto and Sasuke, it is hard to show more of Yuno. I never thought of it before but you probably have a point that since Yuno is talented and the Golden Dawn squad is accomplished, focusing on them more probably would have made for full story telling. On the other hand I would not have to read so many "Yuno never" or "The Golden Dawn is" comments.
The only Golden Dawn member we get to see a lot of is not Yuno but Asta groupie Mimosa.
Even though Yuno is nominally a rival of Asta, he only shows up for battles. As soon as Leo of the Crimson Lions
decided he was going to be Asta's rival, we started seeing a lot of Leo.
This is what I have always tried to tell the haters when I defended Yuno. It is why I have often said he was poorly developed. He got a very slow start in the Spade Arc. It's finally happening.
