Why The Nikon D7200 is Still a Great Camera

  • The D7200 is an APS-C sensor camera that came out in 2015. I bought one in 2018, since it was considerably less expensive than the more modern version, the Nikon D7500. Additionally, the 7200 has dual card slots and is higher resolution.
I have to say that even though this camera is now 4 years old, I am extremely happy with its performance, even to this day. The resolution is as much as I need, the controls are great, and the dynamic range is class-leading.
Its video capabilities aren't great, or rather, they are difficult to use. So, I pretty much never use it for that, but I love it for taking photographs.

I am a full time professional photographer. This is my primary camera. I love it, and there is nothing on the market that will beat it's price / performance. It was the most underrated camera that Nikon ever made. I spend my money on quality lenses, and no one has been able to tell that I wasn't using a full frame camera.

jl sc what're your thoughts on the d7500? I have a Nikon d3200 and have had it for a good few years now and I do shoot video and photo. To me the video capabilities of the new model are way better (still far from perfect but it'd suit me nicely I think)

@@vaughnsigal4560 Well, I'm not a videographer, so I don't look at that side. To me there's not enough improvements to warrant the change for me. I would like the flip screen, but I have a snorkel attachment I use if I want to get the camera lower. The main drawback to me is the 20 mgpix sensor as opposed to the 24 on the D7200. As much as people say it doesn't make a difference, I'm a pixel peeper on my work, a stickler for detail, so it really does.

I just got a great deal on a used D7200 with less than 800 clicks and the 18-200mm lens. $575. Mirrorless cameras have sacrificed everything on the alter of small. I have big hands too and the ergonomics of mirrorless cameras SUCK! The D7200 is very future proof. It will always take amazing photos. It is built like a tank. All magnesium weather resistant sealed body. There is a ton of high quality used lenses available going all the way back to the 70's that work on it. Dynamic range is amazing as is overall image quality. It more than holds it's own with cameras like the Fuji X-T2 and leaves the Canon "equivalents" in the dust. If photography is your passion or profession you cannot go wrong with the D7200.

I got tired of the horrible dynamic range on my 7D mkii and when it quit working I decided to transition over to the D7200. I was able to sell off most of the Canon glass and invest in Nikon. Granted the burst rate is slower on the D7200 but there is a lot more to like about it than 10 frames a second. Anyway.....No regrets what so ever buying an older body. I went to the local store and I couldn't decide between a D610 for €800 or a D7200 with 18-105mm lens for €800.
I went for the D7200. I think there is no need for full frame and the D7200 has all, maybe more features than the D610 or the newer full frame cameras.
In my opinion one of the best reasons to go for DX is that you have more capatible lenses.
The Full Frame cameras will only work well with FX lenses while DX cameras can use both DX and FX lenses. This is good because you have so much more choice of lenses.
There are some lenses that are insanely good for the price and are only DX:
    - Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 ART ($800)
    - Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 ($350)
    - Sigma 30mm f1.4 ART ($450)

I'm actually amazed at the longevity of Nikon machines. I just got a D200 not too long ago and have dubbed it "the battleship"
Built like a tank and takes great shots. I use older cameras and this one rocks. My next acquisition will soon be a D7X series machine. I found out that the saying is true. Change the body but marry the glass. My lenses are taking much sharper pictures than they ever did on the D60 or the D70. I want to get one with a CMOS sensor so that I can compare performance.

The rear and front wheels, assigned as Shutter and Aperture adjustments, respectfully, have become one of my favorite things. I shoot manual, always, and being able to change those two settings so quickly without menu digging is amazing. Yes, I know about the customizable menu. Of course, the two user customizable positions are great, especially when one is set for Jpeg and the other Raw. I took my first d7200 body back to the store because it slung oil on the sensor. The replacement body does the same. A couple youtube reviewers mentioned the problem and another one talked down to us as if we're stupid. We should expect that level of mechanical device to have the problem. I wanted to see if oil is leaking in his brain. I digress. It is not feasible to clean the sensor after every session. I find that sometimes I'm cleaning the image instead. The crop sensor is nice in that it, effectively, improves telephoto. The d7200 is better than the 7100. (I like my d750.)

This is such a great and honest review that really makes sense. I have a question, I currently have the D300s, i take food photography shots, I also take random street photography and once in a blue moon portrait shots which I usually use my D600 for.
Now for someone like myself who doesn't do sports photography, or birds and other fast moving shots. I do a lot of street, food, black and white, is it worth spending the money to upgrade from the D300s? Thanks 👍

I have never used the d300, but seems like the only thing that might be useful is the increase in resolution. But you already have a d600. So, I'd say you are good to go. All that really matters is that you enjoy shooting with the camera. Pick the one that moves you.

It took me a while to realize the meter only works in M...A and S are basically automatic with No meter control except for the Plus Minus.
The histogram is basically showing you exposure over or under exposed nothing more???
I also sometimes have to shut it off and turn it back on. The meter lags or get stuck. I do this and it starts working fine again.

I completely agree, for the money I think you get the best image quality with this camera plus Nikon's huge selection of lenses and reliability. A lot of hardcore photographers love this camera. However, one camera to also seriously consider is the Fujifilm X-T20 for the same price. You get a smaller 24mp mirrorless body, stills up to 14fps, video at 4k@30fps and 1080p@120fps. The image quality is oustanding too, may not beat the Nikon in dinamic range but they're pretty close overall imo. I would choose the Nikon over the Fuji for a serious photo shoot. The ergonomics and battery life are way better, and Nikon has the biggest selection of lenses in the world. I would choose the Fuji over Nikon for more video options and lightweight travel. Happy shooting everyone! :)

This Camera is still unbeatable on Dx, Not even the D500 reach its "sensor features" in terms of performance. I am glad actually see people starting to.move from FF to aps-c like fuji cause it shows how much there has been talked about the differences between two sensor and now finally we are in a kind of common ground where price does bot justify the results. Only thing to complain.. camera grip is uncomfortable compared with D7500 (I compare with Nikon not with other brands) It is not deep at all and with 70-200mm I really hate bump my knocks in the barrel all the time especially if you go shooting with gloves you barely have the place to move your finger. Nikon did a better great job in the new series for the grip. this is my only consideration. I use this mostly on the tripod for Landscape and in that no complains at all though. Always Excelent results
