  • Back with another banger! Sorry it's slightly late, not the greatest connection on the water... In this week's video we are installing the new bow thruster, re stepping the mast, doing a full paint job, meeting with old friends from Below Deck, making progress on the engine rebuild and repairing the gel coat in the cockpit as we look forward to launching the boat back into the water soon. Thank y'all so much for watching and supporting. We are loving the comments by the way and appreciate the advice on our thumbnails. We are having a lot of fun making these videos, especially when we look at the bloopers at the end of the video. Peace, Love, Fiberglass

    The bow thruster install was neat to watch. Ironically, I’ve always thought about narrowing one of my sawz all blades to do curves, I was going to see if they sold them but I’m assuming since your guy made his own that they don’t.

    Have to say, no leisure boat needs a bow thruster. In fact, not many commercial ones do either.Dynamic positioning vessels yes. Big passenger vessels going into ports without tugs, maybe. Turning large yachts in restricted waters is very straightforward (and a lot cheaper) just using prop and rudder properly.

    • @ChasingGrace21

      Need? probably not. But I wanted one. Maneuvering in marinas is just so much more comfortable with it and I'm no master yachtsman yet

    The guys did an AMAZING job on the topsides paint! Of course, it always look better from 5' - 10' away, but it has a very nice shine and the hull looks pretty fair. I am not wild about the color as it will show fading more readily than white, but I am sure you know that. I can't wait to see what you do for the bottom! Good idea to replace the running rigging while the mast is down. I got to charter one of these Beneteau 50's many years ago, and they are very nice sailing boats, and have a ton of room. It's a lot of boat for one guy, though!

    • @ChasingGrace21
      @ChasingGrace21  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! They really smashed it with the paint that's for sure. What artists!? Replacing the running rigging and everything else on the mast while it was down save SO many hours. Maybe you spent time on this boat! Do you remember the name of it? Mine was chartered for many years before I found her. And don't worry it won't just be me. We're gonna fill her up with people and dogs

    • @mikemendes7598
      @mikemendes7598 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChasingGrace21 I doubt it's the same. I couldn't find the name, it was a LONG time ago. We were on a 50, and I think yours is a 2nd or 3rd gen. I do remember an epic sail from Anegada back to Virgin Gorda in 15 - 20 cruising along at 9 - 11 knots on a beautiful beam reach. And that was with 6 people, food and cruising crap.

    As for reducing humidity in the hull have you thought of adding more heat…u know you are in Florida but maybe heating mats on the worse affected part of the hull, otherwise it’s just going to take time
    Getting the heavy stuff done by pros is a good idea it’s a big boat you have there

    • @ChasingGrace21
      @ChasingGrace21  ปีที่แล้ว

      We actually added heat lamps and small space heaters we kept running under the hull all day

    looks good what is gel coat?

    • @mikemendes7598
      @mikemendes7598 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gel coat is the factory finish over fiberglass boats. It typically is applied as part of the male mold process to create the hull. The the builder makes a female mold, then applies gel coat for the exterior finish, then builds up the fiberglass layers to create the hull. When the hull is extracted from the mold, the exterior finish is already there, and usually just needs some finish sanding and a polish. Gel coat is a very hard, long lasting finish. It holds up better than paint, but is more difficult to repair.

    I just discovered your channel (yesterday) and immediately subscribed. Also, I've watched several of your videos and am enjoying each and every one. I am curious as to what was used for a new boot around the base of the mast where it passes through the deck? The one on my Beneteau 42s7 is starting to show its age and I would like to replace it this year. Any suggestions?

    • @ChasingGrace21
      @ChasingGrace21  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Amazing thank you! West marine literally sells a mast boot tape that we wrapped around to create the weather seal. We just cleaned up the old collar, wedged it in with rubber wedges then wrapped it with that mast boot tape. Worked like a charm!

  • @bendaves77

    Why did you buy an old charter boat?? You can easily find one that hasn't lived that hard life.. also you should wrap the bottom of the boat in heavy plastic and run a dehumidifier all day and night until the moisture is sucked out of the hull.. you run one in a basement and it sucks the moisture from the concrete and keeps it from smelling like a basement

    • @mikemendes7598

      Old Charter boat = cheaper.

    • @bendaves77
      @bendaves77 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mikemendes7598 cheaper asking price doesn't mean that they are actually cheaper in the long run unless you are capable of doing 90% of the work yourself

    • @ChasingGrace21
      @ChasingGrace21  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great question. I wasn't looking for an old charter boat but I was looking for a big boat with a lot of cabins that I could customize and keep in my price range. I looked at a lot of different boats in person and countless online and when I found a 51 ft boat with five cabins for $80,000 it definitely turned my head. You see I want to share this experience with LOTS of family, friends, and strangers alike...so I need a lot of room. Plus I'm trying to make it a floating film studio so space/storage is critical. When I toured the boat I could immediately envision everything I wanted to do to make her my own and it just felt right.
      Also, easier and cheaper would've been great, believe me, but there's something to be said about that feeling of bringing something old, beat up, and neglected back to life. I've done it with old cars and old houses and it's only fitting to do it with my boat.

      @@ChasingGrace21 It's the ultimate recycling! Too many boats end up chopped up because no one wants to put in the time and $$ to bring them back. I've done it a couple fo times (On a MUCH smaller Scale) and always felt great about it. And you could have ended up with all of these same issues with a privately owned boat that was not carefully maintained.
