    And there are university faculty members taking students' work as their own without consent.
    Not published, not plagiarism, hard to prove.

      Did you know that once you submit a paper to a university it belongs to them. You are no longer considered the owner. So if you resubmit to another class or another school, and you get caught, it's plagiarism.

    • @lizlawley2416
      @lizlawley2416 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jenifercasey3700 That's not true--at least not at most universities. You own the copyright to your own work unless you've explicitly relinquished it. So the university would need to have an official intellectual property policy that gave them ownership to your work.
      Also, copyright (who owns it) is different from plagiarism (including content from another source without acknowledging it). The first is legal, the second is ethical. Even scholars are expected to cite themselves when using material from past papers.

    I remember in school I learned about plagiarism, one teacher named Miss Mary told us that all we had to do was reword something, then it is entirely Ok, and if we wanted to completely copy a sentence or paragraph then we need to paraphrase using quotations. Cue one year later we have a different teacher and we write an essay. We ALL reworded the sentences and paragraphs of all the sources we used. And then we had a lecture about plagiarism, I asked" isn't it OK to reword something?" But then the teacher said "no that's plagiarism too" we were all totally confused, because based off of what the teacher said, making it in our own words or rewording is STILL plagiarism. Based off of that logic, we are constantly plagiarizing SOMETHING without realizing it. I'm plagiarizing the frickin dictionary right now writing this. But now, thanks to this video, I now sort of understand plagiarism a bit better.

    I used to be a musician for years and I always did my own material I didn't think it was being creative where I was designed to do other people's work so I rarely did covers other than if the band really wanted one. But as an artist I would be riding some refs on the guitar and I would realize that it sounded similar to something I had heard years ago or maybe months ago from another band so unconsciously people can repeat things that aren't even their own in other words a lot of people really are living their own lives or just copies of other people's lives like their parents are others if you want to take it to a deeper level. I guess I was lucky that I was born creative and able to create my own material. But I don't look down at others that aren't able to but I do just respect people that steal other people's work and say it's their own.

    I just got found guilty of academic misconduct for plagiarism on my essay and I cited the main source I used throughout the paper. Was a literature review paper I used as main source. I kept the authors sections but included citations. I used a few direct quotes and cited but didn't include quotation marks. For some parts I recombined fragments of authors ideas in my own way and still put in-text citations. I kept authors headings but still cited. I added my own ideas mostly in intro and conclusion. I added citation in reference page. Have I been wrongly found guilty?

      @@GCFLearnFree I think you used not enough sources. If you focus on borrowing on one source with too many quotes, paraphrases or summaries on a single source, even if you don't do any black-bag writing tricks that are plagiarizing--that can still be plagiarism. Hope this helps. Next time, use more than a few sources in your research writing so that way you are not red-flagged for excessive borrowing from only one source.

    So I wrote a eight page MLA format research paper about Cristiano Ronaldo. I found this really helpful book and I used it to write my research paper. Obviously when I found a very helpful sentence I quoted it with the authors name. I also cited a lot of sources on my works cited page. I also had to have a cover page with my name, class, teachers name, and also the title. In total I had 11 pages on my research paper. I used the book a lot and I used details and I put it into my own words. After my class and I submitted our research papers, my teacher graded all of them in a couple weeks. Now a month and a half later, she says she hasn’t officially submitted our grades because a lot of us did bad and plagiarized. Also, I am in the honors English class, but the other students in my class only did 1 page or maybe two. Only like seven people in our class did at-least seven which was the requirement. Back to the grading, my teacher said that she has this app which she could put our research people and see a certain percent. She said that one student had 94% plagiarized. I am worried that I had like 50% plagiarized without even knowing. I put all the work into my own words, cited my sources, and put “” marks on the best quotes. Do you think I will be okay or I will have plagiarized work.

    Why are there very severe penalties for passing off someone else's work as one's own?
    The severest consequence in academia for plagiarism - a kick-out (expulsion, heave ho, ejection, dismissal) from the college/university, or even worse, not being allowed in any other college or university after being kicked out. Indefinitely or even worse - forever!
    The severest consequence in professional circles - jail time/fines, a homeless-producing lawsuit/litigation, or even worse, lifetime scrutiny of any future writing, or being fired from a contracted, paid, or freelance research writing job. Another similar worst consequences - you can say goodbye to any research careers for life if you are caught and punished for intellectual fraud due to professional plagiarism. :( :(

    So as long as you site your sources and changing the words it isn’t plagiarism? I’m writing a book over depression and anxiety and I am not a trained therapist but I have gotten it looked over by multiple phycologists. But I also used many sources to make sure my material was helpful and I did not want to get in legal trouble.

    • @GCFLearnFree
      @GCFLearnFree  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To avoid plagiarism, you have to cite your sources and always quote the source´s EXACT words. When inserting a quote into your work, place quotation marks around it, and be sure to include the author´s name in the same sentence. To go deep on this matter, we recommend you check the copyright law in: www.copyright.gov/title17/. We wish you the best of luck with your book!

    The thing is that all concepts and ideas come from somewhere. When we are in school, unfortunately, we have to write a lot about things we couldn't care less about. How can we possibly write original content about things we don't care too much about, or are even into.

  • @user-tq1rh7bl5p
    @user-tq1rh7bl5p ปีที่แล้ว

    According to the footage captured on film. I am aware of how important it is for students to be able to understand how to create original work without utilizing the words or ideas of another person without first obtaining permission to do so. Plagiarism may sometimes be the result of premeditated actions; but, in most cases, it results from carelessness or forgetfulness on the part of the writer. It is possible that you will avoid being accused of plagiarism if you properly cite these sources and incorporate them into your work. You are obligated to provide appropriate credit once again to the primary source from which you obtained the aforementioned information. In addition, plagiarism may be avoided with the use of quotations. This makes a reference to exactly reproducing a section of text word for word. You are required to preface the material that has been paraphrased with some of your own words, enclose it in quotation marks, and give credit to the original author.

      Well, In my opinion, I doubt it would be plagiarism because it's of your knowledge, and perhaps at the end of the paper make a statement of you doing this out of the top of your head and any part of my work is proven to be plagiarism, is purely coincidental( I'm not really a professional, but this is just my opinion and advice)

  • @theloniouscoltrane3778

    But isn't it that this presentation is also plagiarism
    since you merely summarized or paraphrased other
    presentations on plagiarism? Note that plagiarism
    includes "slightly rewriting and re-arranging the words that
    you have read or heard from others?" So this could also
    include slightly re-arranging someone else's presentation?
    Plagiarism is so confusing.
    Crazy.
