  • My 14-year old Murray riding lawn mower stopped working. When I turned on the key, it did not crank or click. In this video, I go into detail on how I troubleshooted the problem and got it running again.
    CORRECTION in the video:
    At 15:26, turn your ignition key all the way to the spring loaded position as if you are cranking the engine in order to check for voltage.

    I really appreciate the pace at which Chocaluvr speaks! It's a steady pace so I can understand each step she explains. Also, she doesn't "talk down" to the viewer yet doesn't take for granted I know more than I do. It really helped that she explained, from the electrical diagram provided, several ways to trace wiring to different safety switches, all of which may need to be tested for their continuity. From the start of this video, Chocaluvr has a disclaimer about not being a professional electrician or engineer, but she is an excellent teacher and knows her stuff!

    You are my favorite person today. I have (an older version of) the same mower and the same continuity tester. I too had a bad solenoid.
    Luckily, Murray doesn’t seem to change things up much, so everything was in the same place in my mower. They only store manuals online for about 20 years, so if your Murray is older than that, you can’t get the manual on their official website.
    Thanks again.

    This helped me narrow down the issue on my mower to the safety switches. Not sure exactly which is the issue. To avoid having to actually fix it, I jumped the connection from the large terminal with the positive lead from the battery to the small terminal that energizes the solenoid (orange wire), coming from the safety switches. Since this means bypassing the safety switches, just be smart and make sure the blades are disengaged, you're not in gear, and the clutch/brake is pressed.Turn the key first, then jump the connection. If the solenoid works, this will energize the solenoid and the engine will start.
    I'll note that I jumped the connection with pliers. Don't leave them permanently connected.

      Yeah, thank you. I am not sure what is my problem with ridder because I don't have the testing tool yet, but I am sure it will be one of the ones you mentioned. I did however, got bew battery, with no chance at all.
      It was working, I did few runs but I had to go inside to check on my grandson, when I came out it didn't want to start! So, it could be either stater, or ... !
      Anyway, thank you so much for the info. Very very helpful. I will try to get stuff tomorrow, and see.

    Orange wire only gets power when the key is in the start (spring loaded) position.. It activates the magnet that moves the bar inside the solenoid that makes the connection of the two large post to pass the 12 volts to the starter (same as putting a screwdriver across the two post)..

    • @Chocaluvr
      @Chocaluvr  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right, I went back and re-checked the solenoid and the Orange wire with the ignition key in the spring loaded position and it still did not show any voltage. I edited the video explaining that but I guess I didn’t do a good job of explaining. It’s a pain editing and adding into an already recorded video, and once you publish the video, you can’t add to it if you want to make corrections. I made a note of this in the description.

      The SAFETY switches will prevent you from getting 12 volts to your solenoid, If you are not sitting in the seat or you are not pressing on the brake pedal or the key switch is not in the START position or your mower blade is in the engaged position or you do not have your drive lever in the neutral position, you will NOT get 12 volts TO the solenoid terminal that is directly connected FROM the battery. Once all of these conditions are satisfied, you will get 12 volts to the solenoid terminal directly connected from the battery, than you turn the switch to the START position, you will get 12 volts FROM the solenoid terminal directly connected to the starter motor. The engine will start and you will RELEASE the key from the spring loaded start position and it will automatically return to the run position.

    • @Chocaluvr
      @Chocaluvr  ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you remember to kill the power to your mower by disconnecting both battery wires? OL (overloaded) or a 1 when checking your ground wire could mean there’s a breakage in your ground wire. Check your ground wire for any damage or if there’s rust or corrosion in the area where it’s connected.

    I have the exact same mower, my issue is whenever the mower is running and I let off the clutch/brake, engage the pto, or let off the clutch/brake with it in gear, the mower dies. Thanks to this video I have narrowed it down to what I believe the problem to be there is no reverse safety switch. I haven’t yet been able to fix this because the wiring is confusing me. The seat switch is still there but no reverse safety switch. Any input to help?

    • @Chocaluvr
      @Chocaluvr  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Safety switches will cut off the engine if there’s a brake in the wiring or the safety switch is bad.
      I looked at my diagram and the reverse sensor/safety switch on my mower is at the back under the battery almost next to the seat safety switch. It should be to your right if you’re standing at the back of your mower facing towards the front.
      I would start with the seat safety switch first, which is most likely the problem. Look to see if there any breaks in the wiring, or if the harness came loose. If a visual inspection seems OK, then you’ll need to test that safety switch the way I showed on my video with a multimeter and check for resistance.
      If the seat safety switch checks out OK, try to locate the reverse safety switch and if I remember correctly, I also showed it on my video where it’s located. Once you find the reverse safety switch, do the same as you did with the seat safety switch with a visual inspection and lastly with a multimeter.
      Keep checking those safety switches one by one until you find the culprit. If you’re still not finding the problem, then inspect any breaks in the wires that leads to the ignition key. I hope this helps.

    I have a mower just like yours. I don’t have the manual anymore. Would you know what the spark plug gap is? I have googled but I am not getting the precise answer. Is it .02 or .03 inch? Please help.

    • @Chocaluvr
      @Chocaluvr  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If your motor is a Briggs & Stratton models 210000, 280000, or 310000, then you spark plug gap is 0.030. You can download you manuals online by typing the model numbers of your mower or motor which should be located on your mower.

      Thank you so much! Now, the mower won’t start. I have serviced it: changed oil and spark plug. It made a little sound and now it’s dead. My mower looks exactly like yours. I watched your other video to take the blades out and changed out to new blades too. You’re too incredible to know this much! Now I am just at a lost… and our yard is a corner yard, big size, I am so stressed out that after all this work I did to it, it won’t start. Btw, my model number doesn’t have the alpha letter at the end, I tried checking all their manuals to look for spark plug gap and it’s nowhere to be found. Thank you for letting me know it’s .030.

      Update: For anyone looking for help, I got the lawn mower going by changing the battery. I couldn’t believe that was what the problem was. Very pleased that none of the work went into waste. I’m surprised this Murray ride on lawn mower is this good. We have had it over 10 years and perhaps there was one oil change and one blade sharpening in this entire decade and it’s still working! Now that I know how to do these maintenance, thanks to amazing woman here, I will do them once every 2 years.
