How July 4th in Japan is celebrated at USA Military Bases

  • I have never celebrated Independence Day on July 4th, especially not in Japan, so my friends took me to the USA Camp Zama in Kanagawa. This event is to say thanks and to give back to the Japanese locals who allow the military to be in their area. American food and snacks, free music and fireworks were some of the things that the Americans offered the Japanese locals to say thanks for their hospitality.

This reminds me of when my dad was in the Marine Corps and we lived on Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, Ca. They often had huge public appreciation events and activities hosted on base, such as mud runs and marathons. I miss those days. 😢
Sidenote: Popeyes biscuits are the BEST biscuits!😄

Yummy biscuits. After watching that I've been thinking about how to describe the taste. I think the closest I can get is that it's a little like a croissant but a bit denser, with a lighter crust, saltier and maybe a little more chewy. Also, tastes great with chicken. Or you can put sausage, eggs and cheese on them. Ok, maybe it's not a great explanation. I should have stuck with yummy biscuits.
And I think I can understand Cathy's little bit of confusion because they do look like scones and IIRC what we call cookies in the US are what they call biscuits in much of the rest of the English speaking world.

Thanks for the love!! We love our country and this particular day is proof of it. Our flag flies every where and everything is red, white, and blue today. We love to eat, swim, play games, and shoot big fireworks. When my husband was stationed at Camp Lejeune, they went all out as well. We are hanging out with our military family today and we enjoyed all of the above and will have drinks later to too off the day. Much love from the USA!! 😘🇺🇸⭐🎇🎉🌭🍉🤗

Earlier, I enjoyed a BBQ dinner with family and then music and fireworks at a local park with my community too. I’m glad you enjoyed the celebrations so much! (Bri was awesome! • @quintrankid8045
      @quintrankid8045 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

PongoXBongo, No, I'm from the North East. German traditions are strong in the US. I think more Americans claim German descent than from any other ethnicity. I'm more of a knockwurst kind of guy than brats. There was a company here that used to make weisswurst with veal and turkey. That made a fine substitute for franks every once in a while. For me, it's just not the Fourth without franks, although, to be honest, this year I did mine a little early.

This is very different when I was growing up in Japan.
Back then the bases did not have fast food franchises.
And the 4th of July was a cultural Exchange event. We had a Japanese style Podium erected and we did obon traditional dancing in the day time.
Then in the evening we would have the American Events such as the band and the food booths were run by the various sections on the base as fundraisers.
We would also have Japanese concessionaires running their food booths also.
We would have to pay the Japanese concessionaires in yen and the American booths in dollars.
    Natsukashi!

How funny this is?!!! This video is so nostalgic for me from the time I lived and served on a militarybase in Germany, spangdahlem in the Eifel region. I guess this was an army base but the BX and its food is about the same. Antony’s pizza made me laugh. It was so good as I remembered but then again that’s all we had to choose from. And Popeyes is KFC’s competition here in the states. Great biscuits and red beans and rice. Mmmmmm, so good. Chuße!!!

I've never been to an american base in Japan...but i've been to a few in Germany.... and it's kinda similar, least how they are open to allowing the Locals to join in with Festivals and stuff like that, October fests were VERY big things there. They always had Fests all the time, and German people were allowed on all the time, though i think back then everyone was still checked, despite it.... It was back before the 2000s.

Having lived on military bases in Japan, both in the south at Itazuke for a year (in Fukuoka when it was an Air Force base) and then at Yakota Air Base I do miss it. Would love to move back there.
And as far as thanking the locals for letting us protect them welllll....if we left China would be at their shores in no time. Just my not so humble opinion. There were riots after the Occupation ended and mortar attacks by locals on this base...so it's kind of them to let us stay there and help protect them.

You should see the bases in the States, where there's more land to work with. Fort Bragg, in North Carolina, has stables with riding horses. (I never got on one. It would be just my luck that I'd survive four years of parachute duty without a scratch, but I'd fall off a horse and bust my rear end.)
