After playing LoL for 5 years, I got emotional when I asked for help in map chat bout stuff and 5 players answered me, one whispered me. And 2 mailed me items without me asking. It’s amazing after being bullied everyday in a game like LoL to see a community like this. Proud to be a member.
THIS i also came from league played it since 2012 quit a few months ago. And about random acts of kindness, once i went to buy the Jackal with my 20g but somehow it was now 30g. I asked the map and turns out it is more expensive if you havent completed the renown heart that day. And then i got 2 mails giving me 10gold, which I denied and proceeded to filling the yellow heart again :)
I've never had a negative experience in GW2. But one thing that will always remind me that it has one of the best communities out there, was when I purchased a guild hall expedition. None of my friends play it, and I dont really have any in-game, so actually claiming the guild hall was virtually impossible for me to do solo. I was a little embarrased that I bought a guild hall even though I had no active players in my guild so it took me a long time to ask for help. As soon as I did, the leader of a large guild whispered me and asked what time I was avaliable, and shortly after we had arranged a time for myself and a group of his own guild members to claim it. We got it on our first try and everyone was wonderful to play with. I tipped them afterwards even though they never asked for any kind of compensation, and its stuck with me ever since that all these random people would take time out of their day to help someone that they might never even see again, just because they wanted to.
Mostly the same. I was in a larger guild that was super helpful (running raids and tutorials for new members) and two friends joined. I started a separate guild and as soon as I mentioned it my first guild had members that jumped in and donated the gold and asked if we needed help winning the raid to unlock our guild hall. no "how dare you have your own guild" or any bs like that and at this point both guilds will do events and runs together.
gw 2 was the game i thought i would never like, but after 1 day of trying it out, it's just fits 100% what u want from a mmo. hard to explain it just feels better.
Its criminal how other mmo players talk about the game. As a wow fanboy of many years I understand loving a game you invest YEARS into and don't wanna hear "this other things great!" I guess that's why wow & ff14 fans trash talk gw2 so much, but the fact is gw2 kinda dose alot of stuff better then both and in 2021 might just be the best mmo on the market.
@@markezc7932 i don't see a lot of ff14 players bashing gw2, mostly just bashing wow. Then again I don't use novice chat so that's probably where it is.
@@GayLPer This tbh. There's a lot of co-mingling between FF14 and GW2 players honestly, I've met a lot of players in FF14 in the past few years who were either are playing GW2 on the side or migrated over due to the perception that the game was on a backburner (I myself being one of them). I think it's partly because neither game demands a severe time sink for vertical progression, unlike WoW or Black Desert. You can cap out pretty rapidly on vertical progression in FF14 due to weekly limits, and then the rest of the time you can spend however you like, including grinding other activities in the game or simply playing other games, while GW2 has purely horizontal progression so it's much more chill.
Guild Wars 2 is the mmo, where you can come back after year and you still feels like you are coming home. Quality goes up, story goes on, people aren't toxic (only a bit in pvp) and you will find something to do at least for few months again. Just details like character birth days rewards are nice touch.
I absolutely adore GW1 and 2 but unless it comes to console/seriesX/ps5 ..... I won't be playing. I love both GW and ESO, I play exclusively ESO because it's perfect on Series X.
@@fwabbleThat's never, ever going to happen. But what I think is feasible from cost-effectiveness point of view is controller support for PC. I'm sure it's already possible through manual button mapping and integrating this into the game itself can't be hard. GW2 runs on any sort of vegetable PC nowadays so those few who REALLY want a console style experience can plug their laptop into their PC and that's close enough.
"the reports of GW2's death of have been greatly exaggerated" I believe you meant to say "The rumours of GW2's immortality have been drastically... *understated* "
Same here, but I struggled to "re-enter" the game so I basically started from scratch with a new character. I really hope that after reaching level 80 the content will be more accessible than when I played in the past. Back in the day it did not feel welcoming to start endgame content due to too high expections of skill, which is not really a too big problem for me, but rather the high bar for having the right/perfect gear. How is that today? I was never really sure what to do or where to start. Fractals, Raids, Dungeons, WvW, PvP, it all seems relevant, but I do not feel like committing to one of those. A good mix keeps up the fun of the game for me.
@@Jembaited so I give you one hella cool advice I think. First of start path of fire and get mounts, its on a new level and much better afterwards(Hot can be explored much faster). Then go lvl 80 and elite specialization, cuz you will need it and it can change gameplay drastically. Then farm some gold and go to market and buy exotic gear for your build(please be smart and filter gear by stats that you need then by price and pick cheapest with stats similar to high priced ones, saves you tonn of gold) then you are ready to anything. Exotic, ascended\legendary diff in stats for 5% for weapon, jew, and armor so total 15% power in legendary and ascended comapared to exotic. Then just do what you want, go explore and farm cooler gear or mounts or story or gold or pvp\wvw. Have fun explore the game, after those steps you will have much less struggle!
Person with 3k hours logged in primarily doing Fractals & Raids: "wow this game has no content & no endgame, what the fuck are new players supposed to do? also it's way too easy" Person with 3k hours spent just running around & doing meta events, exploring, collecting: "im not sure i can clear T3 fractals but let's try? i can heal if it helps" My experience with the game is that for every person that can farm T4/CM dailies, there are 5000 that still struggle to time dodges properly and shouldn't be using Zerker gear. The game is far from easy; we've just played its hard content too much.
Bare in mind that dodging as an integral game mechanic is heavily reliant on player latency and no amount of timing on the players behalf will mean dick, its just the sad reality of MMO gaming and unless you live in one of the two dominant countries where those types of games are made like America or China your totally screwed because you will always be in access of 200+ms.
@@eestaga9318 You know there are countries outside EU and NA right ? I also mentioned China as a generalization with respect to MMO's outrightly and not just specifically GW2 thus your not making any constructive point here with your response other than to laugh at something you obviously don't understand.
@@Drascylla I feel this as a SEA player lmao my ping is average 250 which is completely fine in most PvE but can be an absolute nightmare in WvW. When it comes to high-skill group fights, I just can't dodge past AoE bombs consistently as I tend to get hit before seeing the damage circles.
@@Ultraelectromagnetic Exactly! I to am a SEA player and with GW2 I average 300ms minimum, thus I guess my underlying point from my original comment is that simply put skilled play in terms of timely dodges and the likes are meaningless to players like us because of those horrendous levels of latency and this is primarily in response to Noxious comment quoted here "My experience with the game is that for every person that can farm T4/CM dailies, there are 5000 that still struggle to time dodges properly and shouldn't be using Zerker gear. The game is far from easy; we've just played its hard content too much"
To this day I can't believe how many people refuse to try gw2. It's hands down the best feeling combat mmo I've ever experienced. FF14 has a longstanding franchise behind it so it makes sense that it is so popular, but I think more people that would like a game that is a better middle ground between that and WoW would love gw2. It's so good, can't wait for the new expansion!
A friend of mine thinks neverwinter is a masterpiece of mmo , and calls gw2 trash besides never informing himself about the game. Yes hes a stubborn son of a bitch
@@JesusmagPonys I say let him be stubborn. And I don't mean this in a malicious way either. I could be considered stubborn, because I don't want to have go at final fantasy 14. A friend of mine told some stuff about how the game just wasn't worth it for them, so now I'm put off the game. In other words I could be counted as one of those stubborn players. Also, one odd thing I noticed is that being stubborn can actually be enjoyable/fun. As odd as that sounds. In fact I still have a sense of pride over my continued boycot over EA games. Haven't bought anything off them in years. However, I understand if you are getting sick of your friend constantly trashing guild wars 2 in front of you. I feel like its fair to ask him to tone down his negative statements about the game. At least when you are around.
I feel this. I have a lot of friends who are longtime WoW players that stopped playing recently due to their drama and lack of good content in Shadowlands. I tried FFXIV with one, and it just seemed so... basic. No depth to the jobs, gameplay was very lackluster. And yet, no matter how much I tell them how good of a game GW2 is, they just wanna believe it's trash without actually trying it out. Anet needs to push their marketing for EoD, that's def been a shortcoming of theirs.
been trying to get some WoW players to come join me in GW2, but they are either content with going down the burning ship, or they prefer FFIV (not to blame them, FFIV is a pretty cool game...i just can't afford the monthly sub). hell, i consider it an accomplishment that my dad started playing GW2. it's not all the time, but boy does he love engineer! (as i knew he would!)
I've just started playing this game and i love the fact that you are free to choose if you want to give up your life for it or not, and you can fully enjoy the game both ways! It has the potential to appeal to so many different people and you can clearly see it by the number of players you find at any time. Plus the community has been great so far. I truly believe it is a fantastic game and this is demonstrated by the fact that it is very well populated without having great marketing exposure: the game markets itself.
I completely agree! I play the game occasionally and honestly just don't WANT to spend more time using my computer. But every time I play GW2, it's always fun and I don't feel like I'm falling behind, also, my guild still supports me after all these years of just playing once a month or so. It's a great community, it's fun for people like me. I mean, I've played GW1 as well and got GW2 immediately after its release, but I just don't spend much time on gaming in general, but I still thoroughly enjoy it every time I get to play it.
One additional note regarding the Black Lion Chests: there is something of a mercy system in place. You get BL statuettes with every chest. Save up enough and you can eventually trade them to a BL merchant for the item from the chests you want when it comes up in the rotation. It still sucks but not as bad as most other lootbox systems.
Yeah. The keys can be farmed and they are rewarded in the story. You can even get them from random foes in the open world. So just save up the keys for when you really want something from the chests. But you must also be ready for the possibility that even if you have 30 keys you might not get that rare thing you had your eyes on. Then you have to wait a couple months for it to show up at the statuette vendor.
@@ThakrulllThe keys cannot be farmed in an adequate way, one per week and having to delete the character afterwards is stupid. 30 keys aren't even close to being enough to get ANY rare Black Lion Chest drop, never mind getting a specific one. Look at people opening hundreds of chests for thousands of dollars and how many actually rare drops they get. It's a scam.
@@Nitidusroundbreaking take with “lootboxes are a scam” hard to believe anyone could be so aware that random chance might not yield the 1 thing you’re looking for. Am I really supposed to have sympathy for someone who bought 100s of lootboxes? It’s called a rare drop for a reason. The point being made here is that at the least there is a statuette shop that you can use a guranteed chest drop to buy something you want if you don’t get it. Among every other lootbox system that is non existent. Maybe when you get out of the first grade you’ll find something else to whine about
The marketing of the game is pretty much non existent. This is why people haven't heard about the game, and if they have they think its dead because they've stopped hearing about it years ago.
Sites like MassivelyOP write about GW2 all the time and it's on most "best MMORPGs to play now" lists I've ever seen on TH-cam and even IGN or PC Gamer post news about GW2 from time to time so at least PR guys at ANet do some promotion. And to think of it have I ever seen a banner ad on Internet for WoW Classic (or vanilla) for example? As far as I remember I haven't.
Dead silence from Anet honestly might be better than their early attempts at marketing GW2. Those horribly edgy "we're not like those other MMOs, we're COOL" ads from GW2's early days still make me cringe with second-hand embarrassment.
Need more word of mouth, btw all I see on New world comments is GW2 and FF14, so GW2 is out there a lot! which is great, lot of people are talking about it!
MightTeapot, I heard you saying in a stream that if you play the game for the rewards then you truly don't like the game. I play GW2 because of the combat loop, environments, and cool events. Rewards are 2nd for me. Slowly working towards my 3rd legendary and working on PvP legendary trinket and backpiece. SOOO MUCH TO DO. It's crazy and I love it. I recently fell in love with PvP after not playing it since 2015. Been a player since beta (took a break here and there) and also played GW1. WvW is next on my list to dive deep into... Guardian is my main for PvE and fractals. DPS and healbrand builds.
I've said something like this before, and its easy to say that the reward for doing an activity in a game should be intrinsic, but that's easier said than done. Its nearly impossible in an MMO due to how content works, and even in sandbox MMOs like EVE Online, people create extrinsic rewards to things like PvP via killboards. It actually often a combination of the two. Combat feels smooth and it feeling great to properly execute an opener in a fight, or dodge an ability, etc. are examples of intrinsic rewards. But people need reasons to go through the effort of organizing players, and some people really do need that carrot on a stick to motivate them. Its why some people can enjoy playing Poker with 0 stakes while others need something to be on the line.
I've only started actively playing about a week or two ago and I'm honestly loving it. Some of these preconceptions and general lack of advertising made it hard for me to pick it up again. But I'm very glad I did. Exploration and world bosses have always been one of my favourite parts in MMOs and GW2 nails that part. I seriously hope they start advertising more/better with the coming expansion because I think that GW2 deserves a much better treatment in that area.
same for me. started some days ago. my accoutn was created 2013, but I remember other games kept me away in that time. today I realized, this game has everything I am looking for.I like to grind and farm, many achievements, working marketsystem, unique items/skins you can earn by playing, not paying and much more I didn't figure out now :). Active playerbase rising, upcoming add-on will bring players back, too and it is announced on steam ( which will bring a lot new players). I only met helpful players, explaining me smth when I got stuck.
I just started 2 weeks ago. I’ve never played GW2 before. I’m a veteran of Wow playing off and on since vanilla 2005, hardcore raider back then. I’ve played ff14 off and on for about 3 years. I main a reaper and do some savage content. That being said. I play berserker in GW2. Warrior felt like, well… a warrior. Having a great sword is exactly what I wanted. I’ve enjoyed the mounts not all just being skins, but actual functionality. All the different mounts have different physics you feel when riding, and that is just so cool. I’ve done some fractals - really love how the actual “instance” as I’ll call it is a giant puzzle. Unlike the before mentioned MMO’s where the dungeons are linear, trash pull, trash pull, boss, trash pull, trash pull, boss. GW2 really added something amazing by making puzzles inside the fractal. So fun to solve. Last night I did my first hero train in HoT. It was a lot of fun running through each map with 40 people on all different kind of mounts, portalling all around for us newbs, hopping in people’s 2 seated turtle mounts to keep up, and just obliterating some of the elites in each zone. It actually reminded me of chest runs in New World, which early on was some fun content. All and all, I really enjoy the game so far. World bosses spawning in my newb zone when I was level 12, and me being able to help although I died 5-6 times, but still got loot was a massive hook for me in this game.
I swear this man has such aggressive-positive energy and i love it, plus its one of the reasons i came back to the game a few months ago. Keep up the great work!
I think you skipped over probably the most important part about the "not an mmo" is that there is no server gating. Barring continents, whichever servers you join you are always going to play with your friends. Something the vast majority of mmo's are still struggling with today. For me games that lock you into one server are not really mmo's since there is nothing massive about them.
@@vee1766 have thine hands ever played the fine song of a warrior called "hulk uses chainsaw"? And I promise thee, every class plays just as finely. You probably messed GW up with RSL
Gw2 best mmo, started January this year and today I'm making my first legendary pieces, I have 1k+ hours and it's the best game I've played in my life (coming out of steam where I have 500+ games and 5k plus hours there)
I think you did a great job with this video. I was expecting it to be good, but this surpasses those expectations. Ive always had a hard time explaining the idea of p2w in gw2, but I think how you have formatted it is exceptional.
Thanks for championing the exposure of our game and community Mighty! On another note, grabbed the X-Pac with your link. Hope it worked, didn't see any notification so I did it a second time to be sure o clicked the right link :)
I remember my first time playing [I'm 4 years in deep lol] and i was confused as to why people were thanking others, and that it was weird to see people so helpful! But I love it and especially encourage rezzing in my squads too.
Videos like these really point out how many of the gw2 exclusive features I've taken for granted as standard mmo features. Like does wow and ff really not have collections, achievements and world bosses?
FF has achievements, and a very tiny amount of "collections", but definitely no world bosses that's the same scale as GW2. Most maps are completely dead 1-2 months, so even if they have riveting content, you won't find many players to play them after initial release.
Should be mentioned that every "skin", wether it be for weapon, armor or mounts. Can be dyed with an insane amount of different dyes, you get from in-game
@@simonjay9758 You can't dye weapons due to some engine/coding limitations. But they have started releasing more and more weapon variants. Like in wow when you can get the same gearset skin but in different colors and/or with more flame effects depending on what difficulty you do the raids/dungeons on. They have the same in Guild Wars 2 with Fractals, WvW and story weapons for example.
As a basically full time minion master. Playing groups is for chumps. I love when new players come over and think I'm like an entire group running around lmao
My fave mmorpg by far. Took me ages to realise this. Having levelled without boosting or anything and having multiple L80s as a casual-ish player. The content is there. It’s fun. No need to gem-shop anything at all. It’s different to other mmorpg formats. Where I feel the game shines most is being part of an active community focused guild. I feel you’ll learn a lot about the game and have more fun than most other mmorpgs can offer. I feel that you can’t out level or out gear something and you always get rewards of some sort for whatever you do. This is huge. Especially when composited with so much of what you do on one character being available or unlocked on other characters too.
I've been only playing pvp and WvW for the last few years, just this month I started playing the pve story and I'm in love with it and its given me so much more to do
Iv played a fair few MMOs. I swear about 90% of the ones Iv played Iv heard "GaMe Is DeAd" in chat atleast once. While in the middle of a bustling city hub to XD. IDK, my idea of a dead game is one were the servers have been shut down (shrug). GW2 happens to be on of the more active MMOs Iv played. It even 'felt' more active than WoW when I played a few years ago, as an example. I always see fair few people running around on every map in GW2. WoWs areas felt mostly empty and it was a pleasant surprise to see someone around. (May also have been the server I was on to). Also GW2s community is by far one of least toxic I have come across. I think GW2 is one of the more underestimated/underrated MMOs Iv played and in my opinion arguably the best mount system Iv come across.
I feel the same way, every once in a while I go back to WoW and I rarely see other players outside the city hubs, raids, or dungeons. When I first played WoW over 10+ years ago, people were everywhere, but now I rarely see anyone actually engaging with the various map contents. Need help with a fight, well unless you have guildies or friends online then you're on your own cuz there's no one around in your time of need. With GW2 other players can be found everywhere at any given time you'll see people running around doing their story, hunting down hero points, world bosses, hearts, vistas, mastery points, conquering jump puzzles, and mini-dungeons. Someone other than your own character is always nearby. Need a rez? No worries another player is nearby to help you out. Got a particularly tough veteran monster to take down? Oh, look there's a player over there ask in chat and help you shall receive. For a supposedly "dead" game there's a lot of people everywhere. Unlike WoW that is supposedly an "alive" game where you can't find anyone unless you go into town. I have come across a situation many time of ask for help in WoW and get roasted for needing help. Also, I think the buy the game (WoW, Elder Scrolls, etc.) and then have to pay a second time in order to play the game you just bought is highway robbery.
I think in other MMOs, and especially WoW, the focus on raids, dungeons and maybe PvP as sole endgame content leads to making the open world so irrelevant that you barely see anyone having finished the questing going there. And I don't get that design choice, as there are beutiful open world areas in these games as well. But maybe this also has to do with vertical vs. horizontal progression, because once you progress further vertically (rise level cap for new expansion) the older maps still get irrelevant and open world content designed for groups of players become unbeatable alone. So Anet has made some good design choices so that the open world and therefore the game feels very alive. I really don't know where the "dead game" originates from. All I can assume is either because of some phases of content draught or because the one time Anet had some massive lay offs.
Wow starter areas were always dead whenever i played it a long time ago.. literal ghost towns… Theres always people in queensdale and the other starter areas in gw2… always…
I've been playing New World, but I keep thinking about GW2. So far in about 4 hours of New World's starter zone, I got an aggro train of wolves dumped on me, I had another player jump in and skin an animal I just killed before I could skin it, and I've had to compete over resource nodes (iron). Those incidents and the horrid cesspool that New World global chat really make me want to be in Tyria. And the names selections also tell you a lot about the player base.
"The base difficutly of the story is so easy that some of it absolutely unfaillable" good to know considering that once I started the very 1st exp I went from feeling strong to wet tissue paper and I still do in all the expansion zones.... >.>
The expansions are definitely harder. He kinda glosses over that big time. A new player isn't likely to beat the last HoT mission without a repair canister or spare set of gear in their inventory.
@@guardiangibbs2663 I needed help my first time on the last HoT mission. Now I'm the help that clutches while the other new players down or die. It's a learning curve that gets easily overcome once one begins to understand raids or strikes.
I feel that lol I think each time I hardcore had my butt kicked I took a break from the expansion map in HoT, then when I was less salty I made a new plan and retackled it XD Getting progress in the masteries also helped so things like those stupid invisible enemies could still be hit and getting rid of chak goop also helped my life expectancy. I did appreciate though that each unlocked mastery seemed to further help me unlock more points for 'em as time went on.
As a long time player the learning curve is probably my biggest criticism since it goes from so forgiving that people don't learn basic mechanics like dodging and setting up a good build, to expecting those things and punishing those who don't without very clear tutorialization in-between. I was pleasantly surprised to see they finally implemented more clear instructions and tutorials in End of Dragons. There also seems to be more of a push toward using the same consistent mechanics rather than reinventing the wheel as often as the rest of the game has. My recommendation for anyone struggling is to ask for help in a starter map or put up a message in lfg. If you're trying to learn from scratch in endgame content, people who just want to farm and not teach may be pretty impatient with you. There are however tons of veteran players eager to help people and hold your hand through the learning curve.
I'm not the biggest fan of your streams, but I enjoy all your videos of this format, great explanation and clarification of gw2 state, great video overall
I started this recently after trying to find a MMO to get into. I played and played until finally.....I remembered this gem. I am so glad to be back. This is the best MMO on the market for me!
As a WoW veteran my self for 17 years, i bought the game and every expansion every since but didn't touch it that much. Like i made a class went into the game got to level 2 and just stopped, idk why i did that but my mind was still on a WoW tunnel vision for so long. After what we see now happening at blizzard itself and the game for me it was enough i wanted to try other mmo's for once and stopped my sub with all the shit we saw at blizzard the game isn't fun anymore. So yeah i'm currently in a much happier state than i was before! Also the community is very welcoming in game as well!
A Fluid combat system, amazing lore,Fashion wars, jumping puzzles, ability to convert in-game gold to gems,Palawa Joko and not to mention the collections and legendaries speaks volumes about GW2 as a great game with so much things to do!
GW2 is highly underrated. I admit quitting 2 years in, only to come back on the 6th year of the game though. Back then, there was just something that was missing, and a big portion of the player population shared the same sentiment. I was surprised that it felt completely different when I came back. Now, 9 years in, a lot of changes have happened, and it's now more enjoyable than ever. I do, however, feel like the game can be confused as to what it really wants to be. It can be all over the place at times, a bit chaotic (I do like the underlying chaos though). I guess they want to appeal to a big audience, and they want the game to market itself (We all know how terrible they marketed this game). But, best believe that this is such a valuable game with limitless possibilities. And what makes it better is the fact that it's sooooo easy to get into. I highly recommend GW2 to everyone. It really is a gem. Nevermind the shitty advertising. Just play it already!
base gw2 was missing a lot of stuff, yeah. it was the best experience getting to max level i ever had in any mmo, but endgame didnt have much to do. there was little reason to go to most maps after clearing them. few achievements to grind. farming gold through orr meta trains, dungeons or fractals was boring af. fractals were so basic back then... and even if you grinded gold, there was not much you could buy with it. like... bag/bank slots and legendaries. it felt like there was no purpose playing the game. this started to change with the addition of dry tops and got better and better after HoT launched. now the stuff that we can do is >>>> the time we have. the best thing is, that old content doesnt become useless. in most mmos you farm for better and better gear, so all old dungeons/raids become a joke. if only anet learned proper advertising. this game could be huge.
@@hairypotter5402 I agree. This is one of the rare cases wherein I admit something needs proper advertising. The game desperately needs one. It's such a shame it doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
Easily one of the most engaging MMO's Out there.. I've played everything from WoW to SWOTOR and played MUD's way back when. GW2 has one of the best blends of actions, difficulty, story, progression of any game let alone MMO. If it wasn't for titles like the Witcher and playing games with my son ( like Minecraft ) and nerdy endeavours (like KSP) It would be only game I play outside of race sims.
Gw2 is easy mode if you want to be mediocre and actually pretty hard if you actually want to be good. And compared to WoW as that's what i played before, Gw2 requires more skill because you actually need to pay attention.
Its one of the reasons why I hate whats happened to WoW over the years with add ons. They just do too much. You spend more time watching timers for boss abilties, having Weak Auras still icons over people's heads to tell them where they need to go and when, its just a huge mess.
really? i cant speak for wow, but i play gw2 since release and all ive been doing these days is clearing raids, fracs and all their cms. i think gw2 has a pretty high barrier to overcome bc of the combat system, but after that... its just easy and boring. maybe i played it too much, but i wouldnt say gw2 requires a ton of skill to be good at. i think most ppl who say gw2 is hard, are ppl who still didnt overcome that somehwat steep learning curve that gw2 has. after that its just kind braindead.
@@user-xo2og8kv1o It's not that you've played too much, it's that you are looking to get too little out of the game vs all that it offers. If you only play 2-3 types of content are you surprised that those categories are seeming stale? Why don't you try out other game modes like PvP or WvW? You could also engage in the more social aspects of the MMO through open world events and Guilds? Play around in open world with newer players, or go achievement hunting for certain rewards that seem pretty neat? Honestly the game offers a lot more than what you seem to have exclusively focused on based on what you're saying. Then again I could be totally misreading what you're saying so correct me if I'm wrong.
@@Vidiri i did try pvp, wvw and open world event farms. they are just bad... like, really fucking bad. might help to fall asleep at night tho, so thats one positive.
I’d never even considered playing GW2 until twitch prime decided “psst bro you want a 50% off coupon on the standard edition plus a level 80 boost? Yeah I thought you did” and so here I am Edit: no I haven’t used the boost, it’s just sitting in my inventory until I’m confident to use it, I’m grateful for the ability to “test run” the boosted character before accepting it entirely For what little I’ve played I’m definitely enjoying it, but I know I’ve barely scratched the surface considering how many tabs upon tabs of things there are So this was a good video to see for a newcomer like me
It is good that you are saving the boost as it is really is not meant for your first character. You level fast enough as it is. You can do 1-80 in a couple of days. And there is really no reason to rush it. Unless the only thing you want to do is farm meta events or play some raids. But even then, that is not a good reason to skip to 80. The content will be there when you reach 80. Some people give the advise to play it like Skyrim. Unlock new skills, Test every weapon you can, explore the world and my favorite thing. Listen to all NPC dialog. They will talk about the world or events that are happening in the zone. And often you will hear if a dynamic event is about to start. Even long before the orange event marker shows up on the map. I really love the open world voice acting in this game :D
@@Thakrulll oh I’ve been absolutely in love with the fact that I can change my skills with a different weapon, coming off of FFXIV (as a thing to do until Endwalker) where the class is tied to a single weapon “type” And yeah I’ve been mostly messing around with the character creator and the various races to see what kind of “stories” are available, which having a voiced MC is really cool, like I’m living out a story that’s already happened
I.must have started a few weeks before you. Now I did boost... but only to get the mount. I'm actually playing non-boosted characters more frequently to just explore and learn the game. :)
while this is validating for current Gw2 players - people are stuck in their ways. They want antiquated MMO systems similar to WoW. This is why FF14 is the current trend. Its WoW with catgirls. GW2 is built different and its a game people have to discover on their own. They want to be guided and follow a treadmill. People complain about raids and gear grind, but they're addicted to it because its simple and linear progression. They don't understand that GW2 is as fun as you make it.
I feel this intensely. I see other people complain about no progression or no "prestige" for doing different content in the game but then I look at WoW where the only thing people talk about is raids or dungeons for PvE and zero serious mention of PvP. Virtually 90% of the open content in WoW is completely ignored because it's so old and dry in execution. Countless quests of just killing 15 bandits etc. with static NPCs and completely empty zones come to mind. FF14 has some of the same issues but just juiced on pain killers because of modern polish.
guild wars 2 is the only game ive consistently played and come back to everytime , its the one mmo that offers so much more then just the mmo experience
And unlike a lot of other MMOs that rely on vertical progression, I don't feel intimidated about coming back to GW2. Sure there will be a lot to learn about the new content, but all the old content I loved before is still well populated and usually just as difficult/rewarding as I remember. Don't even feel a need to play "catch up" after a break.
Good video Teapot. I would like to emphasize 2 things that you said. 1) You can not outgear or outscale hard content in gw2. If you can not beat it, you need to improve and practice more. 2) in WoW cache shop you can buy items only for real money, in GW2 you can buy them by playing the game, the difference is huge.
After Blizzard and WoW have maliciously put me through the wringer many times trying to squeeze a few more pennies out of me, I will never EVER complain about GW2's gem store. The prices are fair and Anet isn't holding my account hostage with a sub fee _just to play the game._ After finally burning the bridge with WoW recently I tallied up how much they've gotten from me over the years from expansions and sub fees to character transfers, race changes, etc and they have milked me for over $3,500 I am NEVER going to get back and that doesn't even include the cash shop like mounts and pets because any I had ever obtained were gifts. GW2 may have its own version of the cash shop but it will never bleed you like WoW did especially if you have self control to not frivolously spend. You might buy a couple mount skins, some dye, a glider or two, etc but that is all perfectly reasonable.
I’m being gated by mystic coins and clovers atm which is a way gw2 tries to get cash out of players but it’s definitely optional. Gw2 would have done better with a similar styled pay system to eso IMO. It’s not bad in gw2 but I prefer to receive awards after completing achievements, not after paying for materials and crafting it.
@@lizajansone7877 they have a fairly safe way to pay for dlc’s via gold on discord’s as well now which I got into a position to do after about 2nyears. Pity a lot of other things about eso deter me from playing more.
@@monalisa-bs4zs you can get mystic clovers and coins in various ways. :) make sure to check the wiki for information. You could also do daily fractals (zero agony runs basically.)) for 5g a day , ontop of you three regular dailies for 2g a day. Mystic coins go for like 2.5 on the market currently. So you could buy 1 a day and still make a profit. :) hope that helps.
Great video, now they might just further step up their marketing game (as in - move past the starting line...) and who knows how the game will look like in a year from now! :)
Thanks for the favorable video about GW2. The worlds most under-rated MMO. For a game that's "not in development" or "Dead" it runs smoother and feels more contemporary than almost all the other MMOs I've tried. I've tried all the majors except ESO.
I really appreciate this video primarily because its not just your own opinion you actually provided hard numbers on some of the more important questions and that is as unbias as one can ask for these days.
And don't forget that Black Lion keys can be somewhat easily gained by completing maps and playing the main storyline and sometimes even through drops. These give you Black Lion Stattuettes that you can use to unlock many of the Gemstore-only skins...
I recently came back to GW2 and surprised that were are quiet a lot of new players playing in the starting zones which was surprising to see for an old game that doesn't get talked about alot but also really nice to see.
casual player here with some hours clocked in WvW. love the different options one has at "end game". like exploring and, maybe, crafting? go for it and take in the beautiful scenery while you're at it (and world bosses)! want to do fractals/raids? there are folks that can help you learn the mechanics of each fractal and raid boss! want to beat the crap out of other players? boy, do you have options! want the best gear ever? well, have fun with that grind! (still working on parts for Aurora...) like jumping around and seeing how far you can go to get a chest of loot at the top of an area (or a clock tower during October)? jumping puzzles, my friends!
the game is still revolutionary till this day.. the dynamic open world.. the hearts, the platforming jumping puzzles.. i can't believe no other game copied it, instead all copied WOW.. i wish FFXIV had its open world system.. and yes im sick and tired of people saying the same BS about this game over and over thinking everything should be WOW.. that being said theres like a billion currencies in this game and is quite confusing to me
Truly being able to do whatever you want is what i love about gw2. There is no feeling of pressure to do dailies every day or to do end game raiding if you don't want to. I treat the game like the open world sandbox game i have been wanting to play forever. I probably spend most of my time just exploring, hunting and gathering in whatever zone i feel like that day and i don't feel like I am losing out because im not doing the meta way to make gold or obtain rare things. I can literally think of dozens of projects to work towards that could keep me playing for 10 years and I would never feel like im grinding or forced to do things other than what i want to be doing.
Nice video, with some salient points. GW2 was always the game I'd play for a while, love every minute, and then just, stop. The beauty of the game though is that it's always there waiting for you, and nothing that you've done up to that point will be invalidated. It's also a really great companion game to another mmo due to the B2P model. What's really gotten me to stick with the game though, was getting, finally, into a decent guild for WvW. The game mode is incredibly addicting, and while some of the rewards are pretty stale, the beauty of open field pvp combat is that no night is exactly the same.
It's an MMO but it's not an MMORPG. It's a MMOARPG. All classes are hybrids being able to damage, tank and heal. There are a limited amount of buttons at once on the screen and you have to play them much faster. Your skills also completely vary depending on your build and weapon so you get completely different play styles instead of a few core spells changing. Since there are no healers that need to be kept busy, the game relies on evasion of damage such as the standard running out of red circle but also evading attacks by dodging or jumping, watching the movement of enemies and using the terrain to climb on it or hide behind it.
I was just finishing up an achievement to get my precursor shield in the fractals, I decided to go T1 as I thought... had enough of T4s for a while. 1 person obviously was new but he was so scared of admitting he was new he didn't say anything. I helped him out after the run to understand how to run fractals. The importance of agony resistance for example, how to farm the infusions etc... poor guy was surprised I took the time to guide him. I'm proud to be part of the community that's welcoming to help
Well "technically" every skin and item is 100% available ingame, because of the fact that you can change ingame gold for gems. So just play your favorite gamemode until you have the gold, change it into gems and buy your heckin overpriced mount skin... That is actually my favorite thing about guild wars. If you have the time and dedication you can get absolutely everything without paying a single dollar. And i have absolutetely no idea who ever came up with the idea that the game is "pay to win" It only ever had cosmetics and such things in the gem shop since release and that never changed.
well, without paying a single dollar other than buying the expansion packs itself, and saying that they're well worth the price is a big understatement
Many of us are clearly very biased because we've been playing for 9 years, but the relevance of gw2 after all that time is remarkable. Even with the rough patches through the journey, this is the biggest, most complete game I've played in my life, and the amount of players you run into in EVERY MAP AND MODE in the game is the proof of that. Also, Teapot your videos are seriously awesome. You're a very talented content creator.
I think the "no grinding" refers to some awesomely unique gear with extra rare stats or leveling to max level. There's insane amount of grinding if you do all the achievements and try to collect all the skins.
But those things are not grinding O.o You do the things and you get the thing. That is just playing the content. Grinding is when you are playing the same content 20-50 times in hopes that a legendary upgrade component drops so you can upgrade your gear and be allowed in raids...
My character recently celebrated her 1 year aniversary, complete with a birthday gift from the game, and i can't say enough how much i enjoy playing Guild Wars 2. I started playing it mostly because of the graphics and story and quickly fell in love with the game. I tried out all the classes by now, but stuck with the mesmer i started with, because she suits me the most. I'm really grateful my friend decided to introduce this game to me, because he's been right about me "possibly liking it" :D
As someone working toward full legendary gear so I don't have to worry about buying all new gear every time the meta changes....yeah, the grind is real.
Its insane that 10 years later everyone not playing GW2 is still using the same tired outdated arguments from 2012 for why they don't play the game. Majority are copium addicts addicted to whatever MMO they have cultish devotion to so mindlessly attack games outside of that, the rest are Twitch viewers who saw streamers play in 2012 race to max level doing mindless openworld content then quit because all there was to do was champ farm, completely ignoring all story. The endgame is completely different today with mountains of content and things to work towards, mountains of story and group content, all of it on a flat horizontal progression once you hit level 80 (the same max level from 2012). That even with WoW losing most of it's playerbase, it could still not get a huge following because everyone refused to try it despite the core game being free, just shows how deep in the hole this is holding the game back. Honestly once people have made their minds up, it's very hard to change them, even if it's outdated or fake.
I think an easy win would be them finding a way to add to your home instance characters relevant to where you are in the story and have unique dialogue to comment on where you are in the story. It would make new players so much more vested in going all of the content, I don't think there's really enough carrots to encourage people to play multiple playthroughs as different characters, and that would allow them to bypass the other route which would be far cooler, but unrealistic, which is revisiting the alignment feature that they abandoned, re-recording lots of lines to make the dialogue difference feel more like Star Wars Old Republic. They really do need to figure out a better way to reduce the barrier into crafting, that system isn't easy to adopt, specifically to reduce the barrier to endgame crafting I started playing WoW again after years of not playing any online games, got bored and ended my subscription (news stuff happened soon after). Tried Star Wars the Old Republic, The questing experience felt so good, but it scratched more of a single player game itch, came back to guild wars 2 after not playing for 7 years, and I just genuinely love the combat, build crafting, and the general openness to hop into different game modes. I went through all of the expansions in sequential order (stopped at South Sun), unlocking each mount has felt amazing and completely changed how enjoyable it is to level alts, but the outdated systems really stick out. Old broken dialogue lines that still exist in core, or getting stuck in an animation during the last leg of a quest that you need to start over. I hate achievements as quests, that interface does not make it a smooth experience. And the moment anything requires me to look up a wiki that I truly know shouldn't need one, that there should be a better cleaner in-game solution because every time you push someone out of your product they're more likely to not go back, and that's anything to do with crafting towards a big goal item. I really don't know how they could make end game crafting easier, but I do know it's not enjoyable to try to figure out. Whoever's idea it was for downstates is a genius, all that does is encourage the player base to be more thoughtful in helping out other players, and it's just reinforced with map wide meta events, and their rewards. I really believe this is a core part of reinforcing the genuine good nature of the players that I usually experience. They should also half gem store prices, I do view it as purchasing artwork, but the price scaling is not correct. Each expansion should have a decent amount of gems spread across achievements, just enough to buy a couple of cosmetic items at least. Long time that would probably drive more purchases and greater financial gain than what they have today, Gem Store is definitely a bit of a milk fest if you want the convenience benefits. PS: I deleted all the boosts I got, painstakingly writing the stupid item names in that stupid confirm delete box because I already had six characters. But it's the only way I can properly learn the classes and have fun in that process, I know for me jumping towards the end and needing to sift through all those skills and abilities at once would have made me stop playing the game pretty fast.
I tried to get into GW2 comming from other MMOs like WoW, FFXIV or SWTOR and I just couldn't- I like to play supports, classes that thrive in team based content, and there was nowhere for me to go. I tried fractals- It took forever for me to get a group and once inside it felt like my abilities did absolutely nothing. I played a Chronomancer to buff up allies and slow and stun enemies. CC with buffs and some heals but no, nothing. Everybody else was so overleved and overgeard anything I did felt like it had no impact. I tried other builds but it was essentially a "just do damage" thing. I hate PVP in all its forms so I'd stick to PVE. It also didn't help the way AoEs are portrayed. In open world content the telegraphs become a clusterfuck and you never know what hurts you or what actually hits you. Some people like chaotic fights, but after my experience in FFXIV where AoEs are so clearly defined, I just couldn't deal with GW2's system. I did like the variety of builds though. And loved the concepts for the Engineer and Mesmer classes.
I never understood the there is no endgame moaning. To me GW2 has the best endgame there is and always has had nothing feels mandatory when i get my character to 80 and after that i can do whatever the hell i want. GW2 has always felt like it respects my time.
It comes from people that are used to games that tell them what they have to do in end game and for it usually being gear farming. Because GW2 gear is easy to obtain and because the game doesn't tell you what to do some people just get lost, leave and say there's no content instead of exploring what there is in the game.
For the gem store skins: you can get them in the game, I have gotten some through random drops of keys and black lion chest where I got a guarantied wardrobe unlock.
Strikes being introduced from the start of the xpac is not evidence of the dedication on anet in that pve direction, it is evidence of anet's inability to consistently produce quality group-pve activities. Dungeons have been dead for years, fractals only got the sunqua peak (from which only the last boss on CM is enjoyable) as a teaser for asian-themed expansion, raids are considered as too heavy an investment for the production team, so they went on with itty bitty strikes (a few and hard modes of them) as an excuse so as to not be stuck with the same old no-endgame "slander". Honestly I enjoy the game and will get the xpac to be able to play with my friends, but if it wasn't for the peer pressure, I wouldn't hurry to buy it untill they released some decent instanced content. Btw MTeapot do you know if this is just the latest or the last expansion of GW2?
Just started playing last week, the community and help and guilds and QoL are freaking awesome! already mastering my second char, 1-80 is awesome experience you can do it in your own way definitely playing permanently, bought all three dlc, made the game sooo much nicer this is not WoW or FFXIV its not like other MMO its its own game! public events are epic, and you can make your character look soooo cool! also all cash store gems can be bought with in game gold
I started as playing the free game, after 2days i bought HoT. Played it day and night for a while, quit for 4 years and now yesterday i returned, recieved 6year birthday gifts and today ill be getting EoD.
WoW cost $15 x12 for a year = $180. One of my favorite things about GW2 is the gem shop. If I spend $15/month in the gem shop I get BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL mount skins or fancy QOL items. For example, you can buy this thing that will summon your friend to you, no matter where you are. I love spending money in the gem shop as a way to support the game. With WoW for $15 I get nothing
WoW costs $15 dollars. But you get raid updates throughout the expansion faster, you get a whole VARIETY of mounts you can earn in game that have INFINITELY more prestige given their selective applications on how to get them instead of the intertwined real money/gold method of gw2, and pretty much all the armour is earned through game play, whether its dull of flashy. I can earn 10 mount skins in a month in WoW with a whole variety of applications on how to earn them, while in gw2 I can pay the same price for ONE SKIN with no prestige because they're no distinction between me and the kid with his parents credit card playing IMVU
Nah that's not the point, the problem with cash shop cosmetics is that they mean absolutely nothing in the context of the game. They are totally disconnected from the game, if you get a rare skin or prestige skin in wow there is no buying it, only playing will get you there - that is not the case in GW2 for most items and all but one mount skin. This is the core criticism of the reward structure of GW2. Not liking a sub fee is 100% fair, but I think you have to call out the downsides of the system even if they don't directly affect you. For example the downsides in GW2 don't affect me either, I really don't care about rewards whatsoever but that doesn't mean I can't be objective about the systemic design and empathize with the large amount of players who do care for rewards.
@@BisonAffinity can't you buy wow tokens? Your whole argument falls flat when you can use money to get in game currency. And let's not pretend that even if the game itself doesn't allow you to buy in game currency you can't just go to a "shady" website or discord and just pay someone to farm in-game gold for you. There's always a kid with a credit card that is going to get things that you had to grind for, players just like the illusion that that's not the case and like it when this rich kids aren't the big portion of the players.
@@manuelsilva6244 It would be an argument that falls flat on its face.... if the mounts weren''t still rare in WoW. Despite this option existing very few people actually do it given how expensive it is and its clear by how few end raid boss mount, gladiator mounts, archaeology mounts you actually see in-game. Plus this is entirely dependent on arena nets implementation of the mount skin collection isn't it? If there was an achievement mode living world, not only would I actually play living world again but I would be solely contingent on earning the mount.
@@BisonAffinity for wow players mount skins = prestige rewards. Thats just not the case with this game. Mount skins are cosmetics in gw2 hence there is no prestige attached to it.
30:16 "the important part to me is that you won't have any less fun if you don't spend any money" Yet you HAVE TO SPEND some money to get expansion because without it you CANNOT: Whisper to player in another map Chat in map (limited communation) Trade with another players (send stuffs and golds via mails) Sell any item in trading post (auction/market) to earn golds, limited by item selected list Join raids Etc. etc. etc.
I don't have most of the QOL items that you list purchased from the gem store and honestly, I think my QOL is fine. Sure, things could be a bit more convenient but I never find anything overly inconvenient, iykwim. So just to say, that you can get away with spending a lot less that $120 on QOL items and still have a great time and not really miss them. I wouldn't want the idea that if you don't spend $120 then the game will be annoyingly inconvenient to play, to put ppl off playing the game, cause I don't believe that is the case. Also, you can often get those QOL items on sale if you are patient, so you can amass them over time for less than $120
The only Quality of Life items I am willing to pay for and have paid for are the account wide stuff. Bank expansions, shared inventory slots(where you store your salvage o matics) maybe some build storage, ect. That would be my recommendation to anyone whos serious about the game. Its almost $10 for a shared inventory slot, but sticking a salvage o matic in it is sooo worth it.
i will say that when u hit level 80 (and you have done the basic pve in expansions) it does feel like a fractals or nothing since legendaries arent that obvious how to get and raids seem like a jump. Even in fractals ive never been sure when i need agony resistance or how much and i know i could google this but it puts me off. After discovering more about the achievement system only now do i realise there are other things you can do but i think gw2 is the least user friendly mmo at end game and loses a lot of people there. Saying that i love the game! I love the living story especially season 4 and heart of thorns stuff and getting the griffon and skyscale will be an experience that feels very special to me just wish things were a bit more obvious
Well done!! Finely crafted, I can see the level of work put into this and I appreciate it, we need to leech all those disgruntled FF & WoW players over here for a more .... Gruntled experience! :)
Literally the ONLY pet peeve I have with GW2 is that mounts are locked behind a pay wall. Was at least hoping for f2p players to get a basic horse or something like other MMOs. Sure you can fast travel to places you've been, but that does nothing when you're initially exploring the world.
15:00 in Black Desert Online there are 1v1 and 3v3 tournaments organized by the devs and if you win the best in class, you get rewarded with a costume (not obtainable anywhere else), it's the only one that has moving components in it, it's very cool to see those rewards in mmos :D
Imagine having friends in the game to do the endgame stuff. =/ As an introvert it's really hard to open up and re-learn to trust people after so many let downs. Not to mention sometimes even reaching the end game just feels like a steep hill that I just look up and wave at the people there, because I get pummeled by simple everyday mobs in the overworld. Getting better gear is an option, but after spending just about everything I had to get the Griffin in PoF I mentally just gave up trying to keep up. With no one to chat with or to read idle-chatter it's a very lonesome game.
it's also honestly a great game to take a break from. I very often stop playing for 6 months at a time, come back and my gear and what I've worked towards so far is all still 100% valid, so it never feels like I'm missing out on anything. On top of that, like teapot said, endgame is whatever you make it to be, sometimes I do fractals, sometimes for months on end I just do open world events. Although I will say that the raids seem a bit "gatekeep-y" by the community and I wish it was a bit easier to get into without committing to a raiding guild. They have been out for so long that seems you either have to subject to bad groups or have people ask for hundreds of proof of kill of a certain boss
Not to forget the seasonal events like Halloween, Xmas, Adventure Box etc. Plus all those special events that randomly come up like the player designed weapons quest, the shinny weapons events - in a way if you are casual you're really gonna have to manage your time effectively. Like crafting (yep you need to go online and use GW2efficientcy.) Cost effective levelling for tailoring & weapon smith look it up online, getting the most from the forge (AKA toilet) Also finding out where to get recipes - also what events are up using the ingame typed in at prompt /wiki ET. Yep GW2 has a MASSIVE learning curve when you look at it from a beginners stand point, actually even after playing for a long time you'll still find those (I never knew that moments.) And yep all those special items that will transport you to a specific place or give once daily items and home instances and what to put in them - yep lots and lots and lots.
As a GW2 player since launch and having this game as my favorite MMO i have to disagree with most of it. GW2 doesn't have vertical progression but also doesn't have horizontal progression, GRINDING SKINS IS NOT PROGRESSION, and grinding for solutions for made-up problems like inventory management is worse than progression. And i like how you didn't mentioned masteries, its an amazing system but can't call that a progression system either, since after HoT you max out everything in 2 weeks. They really cut the XP and mastery points requirement by 3/4. Having Healer is not a good thing, the thing healer does for the game is that you can overheal 90% of damaging mechanics in group content, basically in most bosses you don't need to move out of attacks or dodge, you stack stand still and press buttons in a specific order (the so called rotation), i came to GW2 for a mobile action fast combat and ended up standing still using skills like in Perfect World, i don't think a healer having multiple skills that can fully heal the entire party full health in a game where you can dodge frequently gaining frames of immunity and have a self heal skill is healthy for the gameplay, high healing power scaling must be nerfed, this will allow for some DPS/HEALER builds to become viable GW2 is for casuals, the main game is open world and story, having 2 types of instanced content for hardcore players is cool but is really really really boring, raids have unnecessarily complex mechanics while the combat both in raids and in fractals is stack stand still take all attacks healer heal then use skills in specific order like a bot, HoT did an awsome job in making the open world hardcore, everything hit kills you and the map had to coordinate to succeed, but died there, recent map's champs die in 10 seconds and the meta events can't possibly fail with enough people auto-attacking.
I would say the gem investment you mention is super inflated for way more convenience than you need. You can easily cut several thousand out of that. 1 You get a shared inventory slot with each expansion. 2 You can get up to 160 bag slots without ever buying bag expanders, let alone 4 of them. 3 you definitely don't need a vip pass since you can TP to any main city at any time, especially now with Arborstone and Wizard's Tower TP scrolls (and main cities work just fine. Rata Sum is super convenient as well). Hell I only have two because they were gifted and I very rarely use them. 4 Salvage o matics are convenient, but far from even strongly recommended imo. I played for like 8 years before I ever got one and never felt a need. I'd agree on really only the material storage and a couple bank tabs, maybe not even 4. The gathering tools are really only good for the glyphs imo. And then they add the inconvenience of having to swap them from characters. They've never felt necessary since tools are cheap and everywhere. Same with salvage kits. I'd say almost every player would be happy spending about 2k-3k of that 12k list. Great video though!
I wish my friends gave GW2 a try but they don't want to "learn" this game because it's been out for so long already and veteran players have huge advantage over newbies.
This is not entirely true. Yeah you will need to learn the game and the class you are playing but simply playing alongside players, doing world boss trains and especially playing through your personal story, there shouldn't be any reason you can't also be as good as the 9yr old veteran player. Some 'vetrans' are still bad at the game 9yrs later. GW2 is a skill based game which anyone can get good at.
Aside from people getting better at the game over the years there is no advantage veteran has over new players. But the advantage from skill could be much higher than some mmo player's ego can take.
I think its worth noting on the obtainability of items, is that you can get the items to unlock random cosmetics from the black lion chests, which you can quasi farm. 1 a week for little effort, more with a more significant time investment.
As a Gw2 4k hour veteran, i do agree with most of your points while strongly disagree/would add myself. 1.) The skins in cash shop vs in game-yes, the number is 70ish% in favor of in game BUT, as you have mentioned, most of them suck in comparison to the cash shop ones so it feels a bit disingenuous "praising" the game for it. 2.) Grind gold for gems-this one is double edged sword. On one hand it is definitely super cool that the game lets you buy premium currency with in-game currency, however for most of the players who are not TP barons/don't enjoy mindless grinding won't really take any advantage of this. There is a lot of gold sinks and a lot of important stuff you need to get for your character that actually matters and if you just go and buy gems then it would be as buying super cool looking wallet while having no money to put in said wallet. In summary cool feature, but overhyped. 3.) Mount and glider skins-this one ties a bit to my previous point. Yes, you can grind for them, but most people will then have no gold for stuff that actually matters. The issue here is the default mount skins just suuuuuuuuuuck in comparison to the cash shop ones. Yes, you don't need the skins, but the game indirectly pushes you towards wanting them cuz MMOs r supposed to be played for many many hours. While playing for those hours, you will encounter many people with those super cool skins and most, not all, will just bite the bullet and spend cash cuz if you spend so much time playing the game you want to enjoy looking at it and not be frustrated by how sucky your mount looks. With gliders this isn't that bad cuz of the legendary skins which are actually pretty cool and better than most of the cash shop ones. 4.) Horizontal progression-yes, it is cool but as a PvEer myself, i sometimes hate it. I don't wanna PvP, i don't wanna do WvW, just wanna do fractals/raids. The issue here for me is that in order for you to become full purple(legendary) you have to play the other modes. Amulet-they are now fixing it with the open world free one, but i had to suffer and not enjoy my time in PvP and those 120ranked matches wins...and the only way how to obtain 2nd legendary ring is through wvw. I am quiet annoyed by the fact that WvWers can get two legendary rings while playing their game mode of choice(two confluxes), while us raiders can get only one coalescence. PvPers have it even worse cuz they can get only amulet through their mode of choice so i would really appreciate if ANet added a way how to obtain all purple stuff in every game mode and not push people who want leggy stuff into something that they would not otherwise do. 5.) Weekly cap and how fast you get game mode specific currency-in raids, you can full clear with pugs in just over 3 hours every encounter and get your 25LI+150Gaeting crystals+150Magnetite shards. In WvW however, with low rank, you would have to spend 30hours to get all your skirmish claim tickets and even with the higher ranks you would still have to play for over 10hours. This one ties to my previous point-I as a raider can get all rewards from "my" game mode in 3 hours, but would have to spend 3-10times as much in game mode that i despise and activly don't wanna participate in. Would appreciate if ANet changed the way how you obtain those ticket, or added some way how to convert end game currencies like Shards into WvW tickets with some crazy loss ratio, but still would rather pay 100shards/1WvW ticket than playing WvW. Not claiming my opinions are the right ones and maybe some of them go against the spirit of the game, but this is how i feel about the stuff i mentioned here.
"PvPers have it even worse cuz they can get only amulet through their mode of choice" - on the other hand: PvPers don't have any use for legendaries except of the skin. So I don't get why legendary gear is gated behind pvp at all.
I don't think you disagree with me, everything you said here except the timegate/multi game mode stuff was actually part of the video haha. I think I went pretty hard on the cash shop tbh even though I don't have a big problem with it myself because I'm not really driven by rewards.
About the cash shop Every year there's two big instances: March sales, and August Anniversary sales. If you play smart and trade gold to gems in advance, you can get the most critical QoL items at discounted prices.
I find it a tad funny that this video capitalizes on improvements on the game released within the last year but lacked for the last 7 or so years. The game lacking these until recently is probably also another contributing factor as to why it might not have caught on as well, or at least even SPAWNED the sentiments from a frustrated and unsatisfied playerbase. Equipment Templates and Legendary Armory come to mind in particular, and it fails to mention that these are only things we RECENTLY enjoy after so long of not having. Competitive modes like PvP and WvW in particular had no helpful improvements for a long time that a whole slew of players left GW2 for greener pastures. They were outright neglecting those modes, late at implementing helpful stuff for half a year at a time, not devoting resources to it (just a yes from designers and not actually playtesting their stuff for competitive) or accidentally destroying those modes (warclaw). There was even a time on the announcement of Icebrood Saga that they joked about what features were being brought to competitive, and the interviewed devs remained silent. That was a time my guild leader and so many of their friends pretty much left, never looked back and never regretted leaving. But then again, this video not mentioning that might not necessarily be a bad thing. With the fall of Blizzard and WoW in particular, the new players suddenly flooding into all other MMOs or even regular multiplayer games have not experienced the lack of features we used to suffer from. So we take it all as a now, with older players simply having a bad story to tell the new, or returning, generation. Anet better net let these new players go like how they neglected their old, leaving players. Otherwise IT WILL be a dead game. I don't envy the backlogs though, but I guess that's just a great reason to play to clear them. ;)
In EVE Online, even 10 years ago, there was the concept of "the bitter vet", the player who's been around for a long time and are just unhappy. I think its common in every game nowadays as players simply expect too much from games. They want a game that can keep their attention 15-20 hours a week for years on end. And often like old couples, they just find things to bicker about constantly. Hell, its even been shown in WoW which has an unbelievable amount of player complaints that most people do leave that game due to real life situations such as not having enough freetime or changing priorities. Me personally, I left because of changing life priorities back in 2013 (finishing up college) and I was unhappy about them canceling SAB development (after they laid off the dude who was working on it). But I'd also just played the game way too much.
@@Jaigarful i get what you mean and, i do agree with you. what i think is part of the problem on anet's side is they might not have enough people to actually address all game modes at the same time while keeping up their LW updates. in that context, yeah, the playerbase might be expecting too much from a small-ish(?) team. relatively speaking. i have no idea bout anet's offices, how many of them are there and how they work. but like mighty teapot said, better late than never.
You have a fair point, but MightyTeapot mentioned the neglect of certain areas and lack of communication that had its place in the past. Do not forget that this video is oriented for people doubting to try out GW2 because of misconceptions or rumours - they will experience a game built over time unlike veteran players that saw all kinds of ups and lows.
Honestly, I like the decision to hard-lock certain cosmetics, and QOL improvements behind gems and to allow players to buy gold with gems. MMO's are extremely expensive to maintain and without some sort of incentive to buy gems the funding for this game would die. Like you said, it's nothing that affects the core gameplay and as long as that remains I'm supportive of any cosmetic or new toy they lock behind the BLTC.
After playing LoL for 5 years, I got emotional when I asked for help in map chat bout stuff and 5 players answered me, one whispered me. And 2 mailed me items without me asking. It’s amazing after being bullied everyday in a game like LoL to see a community like this. Proud to be a member.
Same. Washed out top laner being junglediffed often ;) now I play scrapper and I couldn't be happier about scratching the itch :)
Don't be fooled.
Welcome bro. Friendships are the reason i stayed in gw2, i just felt the need to become good player and return the favor to new players. :)
omg as a LoL player about to download guild wars i felt this
I've never had a negative experience in GW2.
Believe me, i've heard this more times then i would expect, and i feel the same way too.
I only do dailies now to wait for expansion, but it is a place where I come to enjoy and recover by sanity and avoid toxic from other games...
"the reports of GW2's death of have been greatly exaggerated"
I believe you meant to say "The rumours of GW2's immortality have been drastically... *understated* "

I purchased the game at released but didn't play much. Recently I started playing and omg it's one of the best MMORPG out there.
same here, glad to back and having a blast!
@@oleksiikartamyshev3919 thank you for taking the time to write this, I really appreciate it and will definitely go for your advice. Have a great day!
I just realized the same about 3 weeks ago, 200h in since and a griffon richer lol.
Person with 3k hours logged in primarily doing Fractals & Raids: "wow this game has no content & no endgame, what the fuck are new players supposed to do? also it's way too easy"
Person with 3k hours spent just running around & doing meta events, exploring, collecting: "im not sure i can clear T3 fractals but let's try? i can heal if it helps"
My experience with the game is that for every person that can farm T4/CM dailies, there are 5000 that still struggle to time dodges properly and shouldn't be using Zerker gear.
@@Drascylla EU OMEGALUL QUESTION MARK

Totally agree, FF14 is massivley played because of brand recognition, but as a MMO is really mediocre.
been trying to get some WoW players to come join me in GW2, but they are either content with going down the burning ship, or they prefer FFIV (not to blame them, FFIV is a pretty cool game...i just can't afford the monthly sub).
hell, i consider it an accomplishment that my dad started playing GW2. it's not all the time, but boy does he love engineer!
Also save your wardrobe unlocks till you get most of the skins and dyes available in game.
Mostly skin. So it's not punishing for casual player
@@AntonMochalin its on those list cause its actually at those positions. Anet dont do shit to be there.
true
I love to see it
I've said something like this before, and its easy to say that the reward for doing an activity in a game should be intrinsic, but that's easier said than done.

Playing other MMO's made me realise how much i love Guild Wars 2 just for not punching me in the Shlong for trying to have fun.
If your idea of fun is to watch your character auto-play for dozens of hours then i feel kinda bad for you.

Great video, I really hope that Gw2 gets more exposure with the expac. Has so much potential.
Yes! I hope that ANet starts focusing more on improving their advertising practices and get the game out there more.

I love the game and GW2 community. They are so kind and you will see “thankyou” word everywhere you go.
Like does wow and ff really not have collections, achievements and world bosses?
wow has these things
FF has achievements, and a very tiny amount of "collections", but definitely no world bosses that's the same scale as GW2. Most maps are completely dead 1-2 months, so even if they have riveting content, you won't find many players to play them after initial release.
Should be mentioned that every "skin", wether it be for weapon, armor or mounts. Can be dyed with an insane amount of different dyes, you get from in-game
Apart from the weapons?
The game keeps all maps alive. There is always events/achievs/collections occuring on all maps.
The key is to not roll engineer, I've found.
Welcome to the community. :)
@@ghostapi874 Thank you!! :D
why do I read the same comment over and over ist this the same guy?
Welcome on your new home bro
A Fluid combat system, amazing lore,Fashion wars, jumping puzzles, ability to convert in-game gold to gems,Palawa Joko and not to mention the collections and legendaries speaks volumes about GW2 as a great game with so much things to do!
Praise Joko!
31:40 Man, I had totally forgot that message! Great stuff! Nuanced and fair dissection, great video as always!
This is a very well made and helpful video, especially for someone who hasn't played the game since pre-HoT.
@@user-xo2og8kv1o Then try PvP or WvW can sometimes help the game not be boring as you say.
Yeah I thought you did” and so here I am
Edit: no I haven’t used the boost, it’s just sitting in my inventory until I’m confident to use it, I’m grateful for the ability to “test run” the boosted character before accepting it entirely
For what little I’ve played I’m definitely enjoying it, but I know I’ve barely scratched the surface considering how many tabs upon tabs of things there are
So this was a good video to see for a newcomer like me
It is good that you are saving the boost as it is really is not meant for your first character.
@@Thakrulll oh I’ve been absolutely in love with the fact that I can change my skills with a different weapon, coming off of FFXIV (as a thing to do until Endwalker) where the class is tied to a single weapon “type”
And yeah I’ve been mostly messing around with the character creator and the various races to see what kind of “stories” are available, which having a voiced MC is really cool, like I’m living out a story that’s already happened
"FF XIV is WoW with catgirls?"
you're insane if you think that lol.
@@valhatv8505 relax brother. It's a innocent joke
@@Vidiri aye
Good video Teapot. I would like to emphasize 2 things that you said. 1) You can not outgear or outscale hard content in gw2. If you can not beat it, you need to improve and practice more. 2) in WoW cache shop you can buy items only for real money, in GW2 you can buy them by playing the game, the difference is huge.
After Blizzard and WoW have maliciously put me through the wringer many times trying to squeeze a few more pennies out of me, I will never EVER complain about GW2's gem store. The prices are fair and Anet isn't holding my account hostage with a sub fee _just to play the game._
After finally burning the bridge with WoW recently I tallied up how much they've gotten from me over the years from expansions and sub fees to character transfers, race changes, etc and they have milked me for over $3,500 I am NEVER going to get back and that doesn't even include the cash shop like mounts and pets because any I had ever obtained were gifts.
@@monalisa-bs4zs ESO optional sub system is a really neat addition to flexibility how can you be about game DLCs.
@@lizajansone7877 they have a fairly safe way to pay for dlc’s via gold on discord’s as well now which I got into a position to do after about 2nyears. Pity a lot of other things about eso deter me from playing more.

You could also do daily fractals (zero agony runs basically.)) for 5g a day , ontop of you three regular dailies for 2g a day. Mystic coins go for like 2.5 on the market currently. So you could buy 1 a day and still make a profit. :) hope that helps.
@@lunerlilly I do everything possible for mystic clovers except gamble and throw cash at the game and there is not enough.
The real endgame in Gw2 is becoming an expert at jumping puzzles.
Great video, now they might just further step up their marketing game (as in - move past the starting line...) and who knows how the game will look like in a year from now! :)
I really hope they put some effort into marketing End Of Dragons, cause I feel it's a good moment for a resurgence in players
GW2 is definitely one of the best mmos of all time. Amazing variety, amazing mechanics, amazing art and much more!
Most of the people I see calling GW2 a dead game are my teammates in WvW matchs, despite them showing up every day
"There is no grinding"
*looks at my skyscale progression*
To be fair tho there is so much stuff I tend to get distracted lol
I recently came back to GW2 and surprised that were are quiet a lot of new players playing in the starting zones which was surprising to see for an old game that doesn't get talked about alot but also really nice to see.
Very thorough video, good stuff!
casual player here with some hours clocked in WvW. love the different options one has at "end game".
like exploring and, maybe, crafting? go for it and take in the beautiful scenery while you're at it (and world bosses)! want to do fractals/raids? there are folks that can help you learn the mechanics of each fractal and raid boss! want to beat the crap out of other players? boy, do you have options! want the best gear ever? well, have fun with that grind!
The last three points were the funniest misconception of this game that I have ever seen lmao
Since there are no healers that need to be kept busy, the game relies on evasion of damage such as the standard running out of red circle but also evading attacks by dodging or jumping, watching the movement of enemies and using the terrain to climb on it or hide behind it.
there are dedicated healer roles.
This may be just for open world
I was just finishing up an achievement to get my precursor shield in the fractals, I decided to go T1 as I thought... had enough of T4s for a while.
"There is no grinding" killed me... Just the collections bruh.... The jumping puzzles bruh... The legendaries bruh!!!!!!!
Whoever said "no progression, no grinding" has no idea about Vision. lmao
They really do need to figure out a better way to reduce the barrier into crafting, that system isn't easy to adopt, specifically to reduce the barrier to endgame crafting
I started playing WoW again after years of not playing any online games, got bored and ended my subscription (news stuff happened soon after).
@@manuelsilva6244 And at the same time they moan that stuff is mandatory to do...

30:16 "the important part to me is that you won't have any less fun if you don't spend any money"
Yet you HAVE TO SPEND some money to get expansion because without it you CANNOT:
Whisper to player in another map
Chat in map (limited communation)
Trade with another players (send stuffs and golds via mails)
Sell any item in trading post (auction/market) to earn golds, limited by item selected list
Join raids
Etc. etc.
Totally agree!
This vid gave me the motivation to play again
15:00 in Black Desert Online there are 1v1 and 3v3 tournaments organized by the devs and if you win the best in class, you get rewarded with a costume (not obtainable anywhere else), it's the only one that has moving components in it, it's very cool to see those rewards in mmos :D
Wicked teapot unchained
Nothing to see here, just chiming in by for some algorithm pump!
also, 360p gang
As a GW2 player since launch and having this game as my favorite MMO i have to disagree with most of it.
GW2 doesn't have vertical progression but also doesn't have horizontal progression, GRINDING SKINS IS NOT PROGRESSION, and grinding for solutions for made-up problems like inventory management is worse than progression.
And i like how you didn't mentioned masteries, its an amazing system but can't call that a progression system either, since after HoT you max out everything in 2 weeks. They really cut the XP and mastery points requirement by 3/4.
Having Healer is not a good thing, the thing healer does for the game is that you can overheal 90% of damaging mechanics in group content, basically in most bosses you don't need to move out of attacks or dodge, you stack stand still and press buttons in a specific order (the so called rotation), i came to GW2 for a mobile action fast combat and ended up standing still using skills like in Perfect World, i don't think a healer having multiple skills that can fully heal the entire party full health in a game where you can dodge frequently gaining frames of immunity and have a self heal skill is healthy for the gameplay, high healing power scaling must be nerfed, this will allow for some DPS/HEALER builds to become viable
GW2 is for casuals, the main game is open world and story, having 2 types of instanced content for hardcore players is cool but is really really really boring, raids have unnecessarily complex mechanics while the combat both in raids and in fractals is stack stand still take all attacks healer heal then use skills in specific order like a bot, HoT did an awsome job in making the open world hardcore, everything hit kills you and the map had to coordinate to succeed, but died there, recent map's champs die in 10 seconds and the meta events can't possibly fail with enough people auto-attacking.
Quality content 😍
About the cash shop
Every year there's two big instances: March sales, and August Anniversary sales. If you play smart and trade gold to gems in advance, you can get the most critical QoL items at discounted prices.
God I hope asmongold watches this!!
Thank you, this video is really useful and honestly makes me happy. You saved a lot of time for a lot of people.
I admire you
I find it a tad funny that this video capitalizes on improvements on the game released within the last year but lacked for the last 7 or so years.
I don't envy the backlogs though, but I guess that's just a great reason to play to clear them. ;)
Better late than never lol
@@MightyTeapot yeah, well said, better late than never.
