Double tap to evade also makes jumping puzzles very frustrating. Can't count how many times I evaded forward when I was on a ledge and fell to my death. Snap Ground target to current target is also annoying for putting down siege. For example when you have a gate targeted and you want to put down siege, it will put the ram right in the middle of the gate. It's also interesting that they added more visibility to the mouse cursor (though it takes some getting used to), but I feel it's treating the symptoms rather than the cause, at least for me. The reason I lose track of my mouse cursor is when you move your camera holding down the right mouse button, the cursor actually disappears. So when you get done turning it reappears but might be hard to find back again. This is reduced by right clicking on your characater, so effectively at the centre of the pivoting but most of the time you'll have the mouse cursor somewhere to the right of your character. When you then stop pivoting you're eyes are either focused on your character, an enemy you've engaged or some flashy fashion wars stuff that has entered your view. I wish that the cursor just wouldn't disappear when pivoting.
Thanks for doing this video Mighty Teapot! Most players don't realize how important it is to optimize their settings, until after they have played for hundreds of hours, and developed bad habits and then have to go through the difficult task of retraining their muscle memory to learn different settings that are more efficient, so they can more easily accomplish the hard end game group content. I remember how hard it was for me right after changing only a few settings, but what a huge difference it made in my game play. I hope that most new players in GW2 find this video and take the time to adjust their own settings. I'll certainly be referring every new player that I come in contact with to this video.
This might be one of the better video ideas you've had teapot I think this is going to be really helpful for everyone old players and new players alike
Cursor contrast is I think something that ArenaNet needs to address. I'm partially blind and I lost track of the mouse SUPER easy, but the problem is that when I turn on the Low or High contrast mode the cursor fidelity is no longer the same. That is, the actual spot you need to be in for a click to register as hitting a given button is not *quite* the same as when you have it on Normal. They need to take another swing at that one, and have people who are visually impaired do playtesting on it to make sure it is actually helpful before releasing it. It's like those library stairs that have become a meme for wheelchair-using people - really aesthetically pleasing and great for able-bodied folks to use, but an absolute nightmare to use if you're actually in a wheelchair because of how it's designed.
Yeah, when seeing the Low option demonstrated here, I thought I would much prefer that over Normal, but it feels off for this very reason. Your mouse "tip" can appear to be quite far into a button before the effective mouse tip is actually touching it. I think it'd feel a lot better if they just moved the effective mouse tip to the edge of what we visually see as the mouse tip, rather than the thick outline just being a deceptive glow surrounding the real mouse.
That idea sounds absolutely horrifying. The settings are extremely overloaded. It would be a complete hell to have to keep them manually in sync between every character. I mean look at this video. It's embarrassing that the GW2 settings are so overcomplicated the video explaining them is nearly an hour long.
@@itvictor A setting in arcdps that lets you set keybindings per character, or even per elite specialization??? That's fantastic, and I'll have to check it out right away. I can only imagine setting up all of my 26 characters with keybindings that allow me to always put my stun break skill on the same key press, or to group CC weapon attacks and skills to the same group of keys for every character, just as two examples. This will make game play easier for me, instead of trying to memorize all 27 elite specializations, plus dozens of core professions. Thanks for letting us know about this feature in arcdps!

You actually want the "right click to interact". There are times when the downed player is right beside a portal or a conjured weapon that just pressing F will make you take the portal or something else rather than rezzing the player. I learned that from Helseth. :)
Just target the player first before pressing interact. Cause sometimes when you right click to turn camera with that setting on, your character performs finisher because you just accidently right click on a downed person who you dont want to finish off. Thats so annoying when it happens.
well about the autotarget thing. you can setup a key that disables autotargeting while pressed, allowing you to move without taking a target and jumping on it
You can notice the mount camera roll when you mount up on the skimmer. If you have it on the camera will "roll" with the skimmer, if you have it off the camera will just go up to adjust for the mount height.
YESSSSS we need videos like this, GW2 is so confusing with settings. I remember back in the day when I just started, trying to figure it all out. Great work, keep the guides going, really improves the accesability for the entire community!
Good video, I've been playing for a long time but took a few years break and this helped catch me up with a lot of stuff, and caught me on some obvious mistakes from the old days. Didn't know boosting was frowned upon by some, but I guess I kinda get it. If you've got hours though, who could even care? I used one my second time around with Engineer, and I'm glad I did. Some classes don't feel too unique until you level up and get access to the good stuff - that's when you really get to see and feel what sets each class apart. When I was able to plan a proper build and not worry about survivability so much I had a lot more fun and stuck with it. No reason to grind everything, all the time. Treat yourself.
For the ground target snap to target its great when you remember to switch targets. So many times would be doing metas and see someone with low hp id go to heal them but go to the boss instead lol that's the main reason I have mine off. As for the ergonomic part of keybinds, wish we had that in gw1 for mapping lol, scrapping those edges and constantly holding down wasd for hours is what killed my wrist lol
44:27 Why tf is it so convoluted to control the character in tab target mode, when in action camera mode you simply move with the same speed no matter what direction you're going? I got so pissed with this the first time I tried the game I just uninstalled it, giving a second chance now but that still bothers me a lot
This is a really helpful guide, thank you for uploading, just recently got in to Guild Wars 2 and I'm pretty sad that I judged it for all this time, started with WoW and that was a bit of a mistake lmao.
I have over 2000 hours in the game and until recently I didnt know there was action camera. Yesterday I figured out by accident that you can double click a waypoint to teleport to it. And also I didnt know about this instant cast skill retargeting... O_o
Thank you for this! I hate wikiing the entirety of the settings list so this helps me be able to get a decent grip that will make the game easier long term. Right now these settings are frustrating that's learning curve. I'm already without a lot of the frustrating mechanics.
Hey Teapot, can you do a complete camera/character control video? Like slow down and explain how to do the about face trick, click by click, and how to manipulate the character/keypresses to turn and move at will like that? I know the basic about face but comments here clearly don't understand how you've done it, and I'm nowhere near able to do the more advanced stuff you're doing here. In addition, is there another setting affecting your ability to cast skills behind you? My Renegade freaks the fuck out when I try aiming a single pixel too far behind me and nothing works ever (this being separate from the "can't find pathing" on the warband which is also annoying).
The boost thing is what I did at level 28 with warrior. I already have played some MMOs so was familiar with combat and then got bored of core warrior and boosted to farm PoF maps for HP to get Bladesworn, then returned to doing the main story to get through and learn the world. The wiki gets most of the info I need anyway and there's lotsa builds online to template from, more so with some time reading what each ability does. I'd say you're correct with "unable to screw yourself over" too in the sense that builds are usually pretty self building and it'd be horrendously difficult to make a crippled build.
Keybinds is the big big one here. For a very very long time as a new player, you won't experience "the real combat." That is with Quickness and Alacrity, which literally makes it so you have to do your rotation twice as fast, inputs-wise. If any of these keybinds turns out to be a button you press a lot on one of your builds, and it's awkward to press quickly, it's really gonna make the rotation learning process quite difficult. For example: Me, F keys are a big no-no. Some classes don't have super active uses for these, but Elementalist, Revenant, Engineer, Ranger, for example, some of their elites have you press a whole lotta F keys.
Cursor contrast is not precise. The pointer's location is not where the graphics for it draw it if you select any option other than none. Do not recommend this if you value precise mouse pointing. Use third party mod for this.
Collision sensitivity is a bit unintuitive, the higher you set it the more stuff it allows to be between the camera and your character before snapping closer
So I think they need to make the lvl 80 level up reward give you everything you get in the lvl 80 booster the celestial gear and weapons is a good baseline for newbies
You seem like the most knowledgeable in this game. I have a question. All of a sudden today I'm not able to select barrage with left mouse and drag and release skill at desired range. Now I have to left click skill get off button hold right mouse to drag to range then click back to left to fire skill. Is this a new patch that came out of is there a setting that got messed up. Any help would bring back joy to this game for me
so i tried the action for the camera and i can't get it to stay behind my character and have what his face is be forward; it only goes by what is in front of the camera and about face doesn't change just the model but the whole on my end as well. Was wondering if anyone else is having that issue. The only way i can get something close to his effect is activating the toggle for action camera, while its checked, which needs to be bound to a key; hold another button that is bound to look backwards and then if i want to aim anywhere other then max angle my camera as close to straight down to the ground which for stuff like WvW is mostly a death sentence.
Just downloaded the game like a week ago and i think guild wars might have new default settings because a lot of things that weren't checked for you i had enabled like a LOT.
If you didn't tell me to turn off auto target I wouldn't have known bc I did find it immensely odd that my character kept trying to fight targets nearby that I was trying to run from...
is it possible to get a mount without buying a boost or one of the expansions? ? I guess I could google it but I'm not sure if you ever address that question. good video. look forward to seeing more. New player here so a lot of valuable information for a noob such as myself.
i play hammer catalyst,i dont realy have a movement leap that i want to not hit enemies with,as my only leap is a big heal only if i hit a target, and i use lightning flash teleport to run away,i also use action camera so i just turn my camera and teleport,my question is can autotargeting help vs a stealth enemy in PvP,if the enemy keeps leaving combat and making me lose target, and i have autotarget on,the second he is out of stealth i just need to press any skill and it will target them right?,is it so bad that i realy shouldnt use it?
I changed my keybinds to be more ergonomic and I had to rewire my brain to the new controls. Even if I could do the rotation in golem, in combat I'll fumble and do the old keybinds. So yeah, sort your keybinds out as early as possible.
The biggest problem I have with GW2 is being able to see what the fuck is going on in combat as the game vomits particle, spell, ability effects to the point of blocking out even being able to see the boss you're fighting. The ground is covered with so many effects and circles (even using the SAME colours for positive player effects and enemy telegraphs at times - bonkers), so as to make the entire screen a smorgasbord of bullshit. I was hoping you might spend a little more time on how to optimise the graphical settings so as to make the screen space more readable in (particularly larger scale) combat.
Um.... I Always have on Autotargeting, but I'm used to what it will do too, it's been on for 5 years, so, too late to change it now. I've also Always played with Instant Targeting too, so much so that the green circle annoys me if a default setting kicks in somehow. I would like to point out, if you do ANY Guild Hall Decoration, you MUST set it back to Normal for it to work right. I have a lot of movement preferences different than you because I don't like mouse movement, but my combo of differences works well for me, the only one I think I need to now add is about/face, so thanks for that! And I've had weapon stow bound to Mouse 5 (1st button behind wheel) for ages but I didn't know it would change skill timers, so that's awesome!!
Same, always had autotargeting on and when I tried to turn it off it just messed me up. I get around the "jumping away" without having the skill target at something by swaping to action camera and kinda like manualy target the skill that way.
It's not too late to readjust to having Autotargeting off, or even to situationally turn it on or off. I played for 7 years before ever touching that setting, and even still I toggle it depending on what class I'm playing. Shortbow Renegade or Pistol Deadeye in open world? Always on, saves me so many clicks when mobs die in big events. Reaper or Dagger Ele? Always off, because the directional movement skills are so much more important. You're allowed to choose when/where you need it most, and toggle it appropriately.
@@trignich7716 Oh I can't use action cam for anything. I'm not sure how to describe how I get around it...it is just like on an instinct level I've been doing it so long, I'd have to log in and really pat attention to what I'm doing again. 😅
@@SheenaMalfoy That could be a good option. I don't play dagger ele much but Reaper is my main and yeah, the shroud gap closer would be nice to sometimes use in a different direction! 🙃😉
As someone who's played since the before times. The fact that he doesn't mention the best setting in the game the action camera is kinda personally offensive.
17:45 I'll never forget. It was the second month of the game being out, I was in WvW with some friends and we were roaming for kills. We stumbled upon a warrior and he went to run away, greatsword 5, back towards us, bulls charge, right back towards us. We let the guy get away because we were all laughing too hard.
thank you for this. i played this game for 10 years and I had just about everything turned on that you said should not be on permanantly XD hahahaha now I can have better gameplay lmao
Josh Strife Hayes sent me (from the BIG collab video). You should have 10x more subs but you can have my two. Now going through the playlists since I'm returning to GW2 after....3 years (when Living World season 4 came out)?
How much time was there between the clip at 3:50 and 4:02 lmao. He went from lvl 1 to 80 real quick XD' Edit: Ah vm I see, he used a lvl 80 boost to show stuff more clearly
I have a question! I have enabled free camera but I still cannot run towards the camera in game, even with about-face. Anytime I press the right mouse button to rotate my field of view my character turns their back to the camera.... do I need to stop using the right mouse button? Or is there another trick to this?
when I first played the game I have a hard time with controls because when I need to turn left I have to press and hold Q and same to applies with E when I NEED TO GO RIGHT. that's why uninstall the game. does anyone know how to fix this?
Amazing video. I just add my personal view. :) Camera Shake is actually ok, if you want more immersion. what you do not want is the player camera shake, this is the option that will constantly shake your camera in events with lot of players, so check the disable for that. But It is the preference thing. I like to have some response from the action. Of course for the very high end stuff you do not want any distractions. Action Camera, I love It and wish I could use It, but It simply does not work with the aoe skills/spells as you originally shown on your stream. So yeah It is cool for immersion and story stuff, but in the end It learns you bad habits, because of the aoe skill placement. If you want to see stuff in big meta events, disable player names (keep your squad or party names on of course, to know where they are moving) and area of effects rings (the important boss mechanics still have their indicators on) and most importantly have the effects lod on, otherwise the game is just a vomit of color on your screen
As a returning player after 9 years and 1200 hours in game, this guide will help a lot. Thanks.
When opening map, you can still move, but you can not use mouse turning. So I use arrow keys for forward/backward and turn.
Well if you hold "right click" on mouse before opening map, you can actually turn with mouse.
send gold to this dude getting stressted about a default's adventure, ilove this community haha
that interacting with someone trying to help hasnt happened to me yet after 4 months in the game outside of a rez during world bosses.
so incredibly helpful, tysm
i am always asking myself, why the local time, you know your local time. maybe server time or tyrian time? what is the purpose of them?
They need to add "remove player spell effects" on certain open world bosses you cent see a thing.
that would be the effect LOD option :)
"Hardest thing in this game is character movement."
Me, who likes fighting games: Ahhh shiet, here we go again.
If you didn't tell me to turn off auto target I wouldn't have known bc I did find it immensely odd that my character kept trying to fight targets nearby that I was trying to run from...
Thank you for that yolo mouse
is it possible to get a mount without buying a boost or one of the expansions? ? I guess I could google it but I'm not sure if you ever address that question. good video. look forward to seeing more. New player here so a lot of valuable information for a noob such as myself.
No you can not if you didn't buy expansions, however when you reach level 10 they give you the raptor mount for 12 hours to try
LMBO on 'Teapot's Little Helper'. He's practicing for the Steam launch 'ay? lol
i play hammer catalyst,i dont realy have a movement leap that i want to not hit enemies with,as my only leap is a big heal only if i hit a target, and i use lightning flash teleport to run away,i also use action camera so i just turn my camera and teleport,my question is can autotargeting help vs a stealth enemy in PvP,if the enemy keeps leaving combat and making me lose target, and i have autotarget on,the second he is out of stealth i just need to press any skill and it will target them right?,is it so bad that i realy shouldnt use it?
Thank for the vid and huge help you provide, bless you
Super useful. thank you
I changed my keybinds to be more ergonomic and I had to rewire my brain to the new controls.
I was hoping you might spend a little more time on how to optimise the graphical settings so as to make the screen space more readable in (particularly larger scale) combat.
how to make the minimap go up ?
Nice vídeo!
My camera looks absolutely nothing like this. Regaredless of how I set it, it feels like it's swinging like crazy with even the most minute movements.
Useful, thanks!
Already had Motion Blur at zero, but now I’ll move that slider and set it to zero again in memory of TB.
How do you put your map on top right? Mine is bottom right and I would prefer it at the top.
first person camera is good for precise jumping puzzles
Josh Strife Hayes sent me (from the BIG collab video). You should have 10x more subs but you can have my two. Now going through the playlists since I'm returning to GW2 after....3 years (when Living World season 4 came out)?
I found that I needed to remap the auto run key because I would accidentally hit it when using the interaction "f" key.
I was getting anxiety that you weren't answering, thinking that this poor lass was left on read for the last year.
Is there a way to turn off the camera from reset while on a mount? Even with free camera, it doesn’t apply to mounts
Unfortunately not!
How much time was there between the clip at 3:50 and 4:02 lmao. He went from lvl 1 to 80 real quick XD'
Edit: Ah vm I see, he used a lvl 80 boost to show stuff more clearly
I enjoy your content. TY
Is there a printed version of this guide please ? Your videos are great, but there's a lot of information to take in.
FOV is personal preference. I can't play with it maxxed. Gives me a massive headache for some reason.
I have a question! I have enabled free camera but I still cannot run towards the camera in game, even with about-face. Anytime I press the right mouse button to rotate my field of view my character turns their back to the camera.... do I need to stop using the right mouse button? Or is there another trick to this?
Oh, it actually seems to be pressing the right mouse button instead... THAT will take some getting used to....
when I first played the game I have a hard time with controls because when I need to turn left I have to press and hold Q and same to applies with E when I NEED TO GO RIGHT. that's why uninstall the game. does anyone know how to fix this?
most important video! What a waiste to play 700h before seeing this ^^
People used to meme on TB for taking 5-10 mins talking about options in a WTF is video.
An hour!?
Thanks for this video. But honestly, this was way too long.
I was expecting a more structured explanation of the settings.
Amazing video. I just add my personal view. :)
Camera Shake is actually ok, if you want more immersion. what you do not want is the player camera shake, this is the option that will constantly shake your camera in events with lot of players, so check the disable for that.
Can i turn off the instructions when i get into pvp maps?
