Greetings from Southern Ontario. When I saw the info on the Tug (Russel Bros) I wondered if it might have been built in Owen Sound? I worked for a stint in the marine industry and believe I have repaired a steering system on a tug (many years ago while on a tow at the head of the lake near Kingston) that had Russel built steering gear. I look foward to seeing your work progress. Incidently I was also involved in the building of Maid of the Mist #7; among other things installing the twin Volvo's, the steering gear, etc. I am excited for your project!!
Russell Brothers tugboats were built in Owen Sound, ON and shipped via the CPR Owen Sound Subdivision all over the world. Vessels too large to be shipped by rail in one piece were built in sections - shipped to the destination point via rail car and assembled at the port they would operate out of. Radium Express (which helped bring uranium ore out of the far north to be assembled into the first atomic bombs used in WW2) was one such sectional vessel built at Russell Brothers in 1939.

It has Perkins (Westerbeke) 4 cyl diesel. Got it running and went out on the water for a couple of hours but some how the starter hung up and kept the Bendix engaged which ate up the starter. The starter/electric shop said most likely low voltage contributed to the problem. I converted everything to 12 volts (starter, alternator & gauges). Now I feel a lot more comfortable with an electrical setup that I can understand and accurately test for. I hope to see your progress posted on TH-cam.

Does she have the D343 Cat and warping winch still in her ?
George Renton.... Who are you referring the question to??.... or, if you're referring to this video, where do you see a D343 Cat?
George, she has a Cummins Diesel HMR. Yes the big winch is still in there but we will be removing it to make a Galley.
My first cousin turned one of these tugs into a sauna in his backyard.
Dynamo Joe is that the one I’ve heard of in Thunder Bay? Haven’t been able to find it
I know where it is but it's not a Russel...pretty cool none the less!
be sure to give the POOP DECK a through wiping!
LOL!
Did I see that truck drive underneath that trailer hanging from the crane?
I really hope it was just the camera angle made it look that way...
Anyway, cool tugboat! Done any work on it yet?
Just the angle of the camera...
Was this tug made in Owen Sound?
Yes, built in Owen Sound, ON in 1946
Cant believe they didn't block it off ground better and level.
Had all the blocks ready and they turned out to be rotten, so we'll block her up this summer better.
Where has this tug been all this time? Know the history?
Not much known on history...apparently worked Northern Ontario in the early years, then ended up in Manitoba and finally on Lake of the Woods where we found her in Northwestern Ontario.
How much DFE does that engine use? J/K Looks like a bit of work to be done yet, keep at it :)
Lots of work to do yet! Never ran the engine yet but that model Cummins is supposed to be good on fuel! Thanks!
Beautiful lawn ornament
Never EVER walk under a load!!! Don't you watch TH-cam videos?!? 😝
Use tag lines like they did with the trailer (which was a genius idea). Good luck on your new project. 👍🏻
I was nervous watching them take it off the trailer
Look at what speed the mad driver is going.
