WOW, she's gorgeous!! Nice going Matt, your hard work has certainly paid off!!! So nice that Rob had an extra Tug laying around for you to play with!! LOL 😎

Ya, life moves so fast! I've been doing as much as I can in my life...a lot more than most people...but that takes money also, so no retirement for me, can't afford it but that's fine. I'll keep on doing what I do til I die! Thanks Man!
Great to see the progress. Must say my 'inner Safety Sally' is horrified with the exposed flywheel! If that thing grabs a loose shirt or jacket it won't be pretty.... Please be careful.
The Lister is a really cool old Engine but it's under powered at only 36hp, so Matt will be putting in an engine with more HP this spring. He's keeping the Lister in storage though. Thanks Kevin!
@@TugboatMatt Hi. I am sure there are Gardner's here, they used them in Tugs and Ferries. Here is one on TH-cam Type in BC Ferry MV Mill Bay Engine Room Tour . Not for Sale LOL.
As a little side note for everyone, my grandfather who was wearing the blue jacket use to run these boats when he was about 18 to bundle logs into a boom for larger tugs to tow
Nice to see it out of your yard and in the water. Some of those old diesels can burn a variety or combination of fuels. You might be able to save on fuel costs. Well done and good luck with that
Thanks Victor! We now have a bigger one in the yard, done a couple of videos on it! LOL! Another project to play with! Thanks for checking the vid out!
My uncle worked for Russel Brothers during the Second World War, then after returning from the RCN worked for them till his retirement. He is in his 90's now.
thumbs up, i like building repairing old stuff :) Remember too have a look at the generator/alternator the meter show no charge at 0 should be 15 amp +_ , maybe was low idle ?
No the old generator was removed as it did not work. I was going to install a alternator but the engine is removed and being replaced with a new engine
So just subscribed Did any old-timers show up and say damn there's Russell going down the river? Live in the blue ridge really want to hit the big blue or water now on a tug! 🤠
Thanks Mark! Haven't had it up the river yet...maybe this year he will! I'm sure the old times would love to see her or take a ride in her...I know a few old loggers that used to run them!
tom L hi. Yes, you could subscribe to me if you would like to. I am currently building a new cabin for the boat and maybe installing a new engine also. Last summer I had it in the water for 2 months with no cabin just so I could enjoy it.
cooey84 I’m coming over to subscribe also Matt!! Love what you have done with the tug and want to follow what you do to her. Wish I could find a similar tug, I love those things!! They are so simple, yet strong. Good job Matt, I’m proud of you buddy!!
Russel Brothers built many of these type of boats and they were used everywhere. I've seen some photos of Lowbush logging, wish I would've been around in those times. Thanks Elmer!
It’s been awhile since a saw the sleeping giant in Thunder Bay and the deer that come down to the terminals to eat the grain that spills on the tracks that comes in mostly from the prairies to be shipped via Great Lakes
Yeah, he's building up the pilothouse so it's isolated and sitting higher than the engine...it'll be much quieter then I'm sure! When I owned it, I was going to build a wall right in front of the engine. Thanks for watching Chris!
Thanks Chris! It was awesome to see my old Tug hit the water and then be able to drive it around a bit! We picked up another bigger Tug this year...needs lots of TLC but hopefully in a few years she'll be in the water! Thanks for tuning in!
Now that she's not doing hard labour any more surely she deserves a propeller with higher pitch to up the knots just a dash or two . Would make her a wonderful cruiser at low Rpm.
Outdoor Rob they made it work, just like all of the guys that built this country. No complaining, no osha, if it wasn’t just right from the factory then they just rolled up their sleeves and either conformed to it or modified it to suit their need and they got to work. They didn’t pussyfoot around back then like most men do today and spend more energy giving excuses of why they can’t do their job than it would take to just do their job flawlessly!!! Good video Matt & Robb, I appreciate it very much guys!! Keep the tugs alive boys!!!
Flat bottom boat meant for small rivers and lakes, not very seaworthy on Superior in the open! Great for cruising around the Harbour and up the Kam River, will very cool to see her on the Kam...hopefully this year! Thanks for watching!
I recall when tugs rafted logs to Abitibi and then smaller ones would shove logs to groundwood . Guys i worked with for awhile called the smaller ones gators . Do you remember that , gators ? Maybe it was just a nickname not commonly used . Long time ago .
Yeah, it was a nickmane they picked up cause they could winch themselves overland, looked like an alligator crawling along! Very cool boats and very tough!
Mr Tundranutz my grandpa, wearing the blue jacket, use to operate these boats and other bigger ones back when he was a teen and in his early 20's I believe he said. It brought back lots of memories for him to see mine in the water. As Rob mentioned they referred to them as gators based on how they can "crawl" across land and strait back in by them self.
I only worked at Abitibi for a short time but thought i remembered the term gator and now you and Rob have confirmed it so i wasn't dreaming after all . Looks like a great boat . Thanks for the reply .
This is the same small tug that I owned and sold to Matt...I have a vid of it being moved off the property that I have yet to post...just posted the vids out of order.
TrulyUnfortunate ya. I am decking it over with a hatch over the engine, and having a separate wheelhouse ahead of where the engine compartment is with a insulated bulkhead between

Definitely nice to see some old stuff saved...it's our history.
AWESOME job on the tug . Very happy to see you give it a new life !!

Steel dory, a floating engine. Design simplicity to do the job of moving logs in a mill pond.
Yep, she worked the small lakes and rivers pushing and pulling logs. Built specifically for the logging industry at the time!

I would think such a small tug "would imply" absolutely great 360 visibility for tight manouvering, but that does not seem to be the case LOL.
